Investing in Global Relationships: Ireland’s International Education Strategy 2010 – 2015 was published in September 2010. Significant progress has been made in implementing this strategy, to complement and support the work undertaken at institutional level: - A strong national brand is now in place: Education in Ireland, managed by Enterprise Ireland. - There is much closer alignment between education and immigration policies. - A new Government of Ireland Scholarship has been established, managed by the Higher Education Authority. - An International Education Marketing Fund has been developed which allows institutions to collaborate in Enterprise Ireland- led national marketing initiatives. - Promotional efforts are taking place in the priority markets of the USA, Brazil, China, India, SE Asia and the Gulf. Ministers have visited each of the priority markets in the last two years. - Ireland is participating at national level in major international scholarship schemes such as Science Without Borders (Brazil) and the King Abdullah Scholarship Programme (Saudi Arabia). - Statutory provision is now in place for an international education mark and code of practice, which will be rolled out in 2014 by Qualifications and Quality Assurance Ireland (QQI). - International student numbers have risen in priority sectors: 14% growth in the English language sector and 9% growth in higher education since 2010. - Ireland’s international education offering has also diversified, including with increasingly significant levels of cross- border provision. However, global demand for education continues to change rapidly. There continues to be a massive expansion in demand for education around the world, particularly in emerging markets with growing middle classes.

Ireland has a strong reputation for delivery of high-quality education services both to our own citizens and those who come here from abroad. A degree from an Irish university, Institute of Technology or high-quality private sector provider is an indicator of significant educational achievement, highly valued by our students and employers alike. Ireland is also a specialist in high-quality English Language tuition. Many thousands of students from the EU and around the world come to Ireland for full-time or short-term programmes.

The role of Propionibacterium acnes in acne and in a wide range of inflammatory diseases is well established. However, P. acnes is also responsible for infections involving implants. Prolonged aerobic and anaerobic agar cultures for 14 days and broth cultures increase the detection rate. In this paper, we review the pathogenic role of P. acnes in implant-associated infections such as prosthetic joints, cardiac devices, breast implants, intraocular lenses, neurosurgical devices, and spine implants. The management of severe infections caused by P. acnes involves a combination of antimicrobial and surgical treatment (often removal of the device). Intravenous penicillin G and ceftriaxone are the first choice for serious infections, with vancomycin and daptomycin as alternatives, and amoxicillin, rifampicin, clindamycin, tetracycline, and levofloxacin for oral treatment. Sonication of explanted prosthetic material improves the diagnosis of implant-associated infections. Molecular methods may further increase the sensitivity of P. acnes detection. Coating of implants with antimicrobial substances could avoid or limit colonization of the surface and thereby reduce the risk of biofilm formation during severe infections. Our understanding of the role of P. acnes in human diseases will likely continue to increase as new associations and pathogenic mechanisms are discovered.

We describe an innovative use of multimedia materials to support training and advocacy within a schistosomiasis control programme. The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) at Imperial College London works with selected sub-Saharan African countries to develop schistosomiasis control programmes. Two elements of the SCI programme were supported by multimedia materials developed at the Wellcome Trust in collaboration with the SCI: (1) training of programme managers, district health officers, and those delivering practical elements of the programme; and (2) advocacy targeted at decision-makers and donors. Evaluation of the materials revealed high reported ratings for both user satisfaction and impact from use of the product. From this experience we draw out several general messages about development of multimedia materials and how these will play a growing future role in promoting training within international health.

Remyelination can be studied in aggregating rat brain cell cultures after limited demyelination. Demyelination was induced using a monoclonal antibody against myelin/oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG mAb), in the presence of complement. De- and remyelination were assessed by measuring myelin basic protein (MBP). Two days after removing the MOG mAb, MBP levels reached 50% of controls and after 7 days 93%. During this period, cell proliferation determined by [14C]thymidine incorporation was similar in remyelinating and control cultures. Hormones and growth factors were tested for possible stimulatory effect on remyelinating cultures. Bovine growth hormone (bGH), triiodothyronine (T3), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) did not improve remyelination. Only epidermal growth factor (EGF) increased the level of remyelination. PDGF increased the rate of cell proliferation in both control and remyelinating cultures. A significant proportion of oligodendrocytes entered the cell division cycle and were not available for remyelination. The results obtained with PDGF and FGF (inhibition) support the idea that a pool of progenitor cells was still present and able to proliferate and differentiate into myelinating oligodendrocytes. The levels of myelin protein mRNAs were investigated during de- and remyelination. During demyelination, myelin protein mRNA levels decreased to approximately 50% of control cultures and returned to normal during remyelination. These preliminary results indicate that normal levels of gene transcription are sufficient to meet the increased need for newly synthesized myelin proteins during remyelination.

We tested the attraction of Triatoma dimidiata and T. pallidipennis to traps baited with yeast volatiles. Two traps were simultaneously presented in opposite sides of an experimental arena. One trap presented a yeast culture in sucrose solution, while the other contained sucrose solution as control. A first experimental series was done without offering a central refuge for bugs. In a second series, one shelter where the insects could hide was offered and the traps were presented afterwards. In the first series, yeast baited traps attracted significantly more insects than control ones for both species. In the second series, T. pallidipennis was significantly attracted to yeast, whereas T. dimidiata was not attracted. The potential use of yeast baited traps for capturing these vectors of Chagas disease is discussed.
