This paper describes the application of artificial neural nets as an alternative and efficient method for the classification of botanical taxa based on chemical data (chemosystematics). A total of 28,000 botanical occurrences of chemical compounds isolated from the Asteraceae family were chosen from the literature, and grouped by chemical class for each species. Four tests were carried out to differentiate and classify different botanical taxa. The qualifying capacity of the artificial neural nets was dichotomically tested at different hierarchical levels of the family, such as subfamilies and groups of Heliantheae subtribes. Furthermore, two specific subtribes of the Heliantheae and two genera of one of these subtribes were also tested. In general, the artificial neural net gave rise to good results, with multiple-correlation values R > 0.90. Hence, it was possible to differentiate the dichotomic character of the botanical taxa studied.

Thermal decomposition kinetics of solid rocket propellants based on hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene-HTPB binder was studied by applying the Arrhenius and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa's methods. The thermal decomposition data of the propellant samples were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG) at different heating rates in the temperature range of 300-1200 K. TG curves showed that the thermal degradation occurred in three main stages regardless of the plasticizer (DOA) raw material, the partial HTPB/IPDI binder and the total ammonium perchlorate decompositions. The kinetic parameters E-a (activation energy) and A (pre-exponential factor) and the compensation parameter (S-p) were determined. The apparent activation energies obtained from different methods showed a very good agreement.

Curauá fiber processing characterization has been performed throughout the different processing steps. Unsaturated polyester has been used as matrix in the production of curauá reinforced composite samples. Compression molding process has been used to prepare the samples. Tensile strength, impact resistance, flexural strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break have been accessed for curauá composites in comparison with fiberglass composites. Mechanical properties were found not to attend the company's internal standards specification. However, the work has shown some alternatives to solve these problems such as the modification of equipment characteristics and resin formulation, the necessity of incorporation of a higher content of fiber and the possibility of using a new type of filler. The electrochemical behavior of polystyrene modified with gold nanoparticle (Au NPs) was investigated in terms of pH-responsive polymer brush. A pH-responsive of modified polymer brush from tethered polystyrene was prepared and used for selective gating transport of anions andcations across the thin-film. An ITO-coated glass electrode was used as substrate and applied to study the switchable permeability of the polymer brush triggered by changes in pH of the aqueous environment. The pH-sensitive behavior of the polymer brush interface has been demonstrated by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR). CV experiments showed at ph values of 4 and 8 induces swelling and shrinking of the grafted polymer brushes, respectively, and this behavior is fast and reversible. LSPR measurements showed a blue shift of 33 nm in the surface resonance band changes by local pH. The paper brings an easy methodology to fabrication a variety of nanosensors based on the polymer brushes-nanoparticle assemblies. © 2013 by ESG.

In this article, the authors aim to present a critical review of recent MRI studies addressing white matter (WM) abnormalities in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), by searching PubMed and reviewing MRI studies evaluating subjects with AD or MCI using WM volumetric methods, diffusion tensor imaging and assessment of WM hyperintensities. Studies have found that, compared with healthy controls, AD and MCI samples display WM volumetric reductions and diffusion tensor imaging findings suggestive of reduced WM integrity. These changes affect complex networks relevant to episodic memory and other cognitive processes, including fiber connections that directly link medial temporal structures and the corpus callosum. Abnormalities in cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical WM interconnections are associated with an increased risk of progression from MCI to dementia. It can be concluded that WM abnormalities are detectable in early stages of AD and MCI. Degeneration of WM networks causes disconnection among neural cells and the degree of such changes is related to cognitive decline. © 2013 2013 Expert Reviews Ltd.

The use of wireless local area networks, called WLANs, as well as the proliferation of the use of multimedia applications have grown rapidly in recent years. Some factors affect the quality of service (QoS) received by the user and interference is one of them. This work presents strategies for planning and performance evaluation through an empirical study of the QoS parameters of a voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) application in an interference network, as well as the relevance in the design of wireless networks to determine the coverage area of an access point, taking into account several parameters such as power, jitter, packet loss, delay, and PMOS. Another strategy is based on a hybrid approach that considers measuring and Bayesian inference applied to wireless networks, taking into consideration QoS parameters. The models take into account a cross layer vision of networks, correlating aspects of the physical environment, on the signal propagation (power or distance) with aspects of VoIP applications (e.g., jitter and packet loss). Case studies were carried out for two indoor environments and two outdoor environments, one of them displaying main characteristics of the Amazon region (e.g., densely arboreous environments). This last test bed was carried out in a real system because the Government of the State of Pará has a digital inclusion program called NAVEGAPARÁ.
