Club drug use and unprotected anal intercourse among HIV-seronegative men who have sex with men seeking HIV/STD testing at a local STD clinic in Houston

Objective. To explore (1) the association between "club drug" use and unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) and (2) the association between binge drug use and UAI among HIV seronegative men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking HIV/STD testing at a local clinic in Houston. ^ Study design. A sub-sample of 297 HIV seronegative MSM from a cross-sectional study of drug and sexual behavior in Houston was conducted in 2006. Patients who were seeking HIV/STD testing at a local MSM-identified STD clinic were recruited for an anonymous computer-assisted interview. Analysis of identified secondary data consisted of self-reported information about demographic characteristics, use of drugs, and sexual behaviors. ^ Results. With new and casual sex partners, there was a strong and statistically significant association between use of "club drugs" and UAI. No association between binge drug use and UAI was evident. Men aware of HIV seropositivity or unaware of the HIV serostatus of their primary partner were less likely to report UAI. ^ Conclusion. These data suggest that in the Houston area, HIV-negative MSM club drug users, particularly multiple drug users, are at higher risk of UAI than comparable MSMs who do not use club drugs. Episode-level data regarding binge use of these and other drugs, and UAI should be collected in future studies to explore their relationship. The 'new partner' category should be added to sex partner types to measure sex and drug use behaviors in future studies.^ Keywords. Sediment and pore water geochemistry of sediment cores, Potter Cove, King George Island

Redox-sensitive trace metals (Mn, Fe, U, Mo, Re), nutrients and terminal metabolic products (NO3-, NH4+, PO43-, total alkalinity) were for the first time investigated in pore waters of Antarctic coastal sediments. The results of this study reveal a high spatial variability in redox conditions in surface sediments from Potter Cove, King George Island, western Antarctic Peninsula. Particularly in the shallower areas of the bay the significant correlation between sulphate depletion and total alkalinity, the inorganic product of terminal metabolism, indicates sulphate reduction to be the major pathway of organic matter mineralisation. In contrast, dissimilatory metal oxide reduction seems to be prevailing in the newly ice-free areas and the deeper troughs, where concentrations of dissolved iron of up to 700 µM were found. We suggest that the increased accumulation of fine-grained material with high amounts of reducible metal oxides in combination with the reduced availability of metabolisable organic matter and enhanced physical and biological disturbance by bottom water currents, ice scouring and burrowing organisms favours metal oxide reduction over sulphate reduction in these areas. Based on modelled iron fluxes we calculate the contribution of the Antarctic shelf to the pool of potentially bioavailable iron (Feb) to be 6.9x10**3 to 790x10**3 t/yr. Consequently, these shelf sediments would provide an Feb flux of 0.35-39.5/mg/m**2/yr (median: 3.8 mg/m**2/yr) to the Southern Ocean. This contribution is in the same order of magnitude as the flux provided by icebergs and significantly higher than the input by aeolian dust. For this reason suboxic shelf sediments form a key source of iron for the high nutrient-low chlorophyll (HNLC) areas of the Southern Ocean. This source may become even more important in the future due to rising temperatures at the WAP accompanied by enhanced glacier retreat and the accumulation of melt water derived iron-rich material on the shelf.

De lectores y prácticas lectoras : la multiplicidad de pactos de lectura en los albores del tercer milenio

En este trabajo nos proponemos analizar el fenómeno de la lectura en el actual escenario sociocultural. Para poder dar cuenta de la complejidad de la problemática encarada, trabajaremos desde un enfoque que combina básicamente dos focalizaciones: la explicación sociohistórica y la reflexión conceptual sobre la temática, proveniente de distintas tareas semióticas. La lectura es la interacción de un sujeto con un texto entendido éste en un sentido que excede lo meramente gráfico-verbal-, con el objeto de interpretarlo, elaborando una representación mental de su significación. Toda lectura presupone un pacto tácito: el contrato de lectura. Este pacto es dinámico y cambiante, por ello analizaremos las modificaciones producidas en las modalidades de lectura de los textos escritos y la vinculación de éstas con los pactos de lectura generados por los textos audiovisuales y multimediales.

Lectores de Días como flechas

Desde la perspectiva crítica de la estética de la recepción, un repaso de las lecturas de Días como flechas (1926) permite entender su papel en el contexto de la propuesta renovadora de las vertientes vanguardistas argentinas. Por otra parte, dicho repaso muestra que la recepción fue atendida por Leopoldo Marechal, a punto tal de ser reelaborada literariamente en su Adán Buenosayres (1948). La autotextualidad de la novela, señalada reiteradamente por la crítica, no implica sólo una recuperación del propio texto, sino también de los efectos que él mismo provocó en los lectores de la época. Los comentarios del protagonista sobre la metáfora en los episodios de la glorieta de Ciro y de la visita al círculo infernal de los violentos, salen al cruce de las críticas que oportunamente se realizaran con referencia a la práctica marechaliana de la figura en Días... La lectura autocrítica desde este nuevo horizonte estético muestra que la recepción del poemario incidió también como un elemento motivador de su evolución expresiva.

Identidad y señalética Club Mendoza de Regatas

Este proyecto desarrolla la identidad del Club Mendoza de Regatas, club deportivo emblemático de la ciudad de Mendoza. Debido a la gran envergadura edilicia de esta institución, resulta muy dificultoso poder orientarse dentro del mismo, por lo que se planteó un sistema señalético que oriente al público. A través de un trabajo de investigación se renueva su identidad visual, la que ayudará a su posicionamiento e identificación por parte de los socios y pobladores de la ciudad de Mendoza.

Personajes lectores en la novela de la Organización Nacional

El trabajo se propone presentar una serie de personajes‐lectores que habitan los mundos ficcionales de un corpus de novelas argentinas producidas durante el período de la Organización Nacional, con el propósito de indagar en las representaciones del acto de leer que los escritores y escritoras proyectaron en sus obras. Pretende, a su vez, establecer puntos de articulación con una situación sociohistórica caracterizada, dados los esfuerzos emprendidos, como un tramo decisivo en la creación de las condiciones de posibilidad para la conformación de un público instruido. Dos particularidades referidas a los personajes lectores plasmados en las novelas examinadas presentan interés. Por un lado, las representaciones de las heroínas que leen aportan una versión desconocida de la lectora ficcional en la medida en que constituyen la imagen contrapuesta del cliché literario de la “mala lectora" o casos de bovarismo. Por otro, plasman dos retratos de personajes masculinos descriptos por su mal desempeño en la práctica de la lectura. Estas representaciones resultan llamativas y permiten analizar las posiciones de los autores ante la extensión de la lectura a nuevos sectores.

The vegetation of a small fjord and its adjacent open shore was documented by subaquatic video. The distribution of individual species of macroalgae and the composition of assemblages were compared with gradients of light availability, hydrography, slope inclination, substratum, and exposition to turbulence and ice. The sublittoral fringe is usually abraded by winterly ice floes and devoid of large, perennial algae. Below this zone, the upper sublittoral is dominated by Desmarestia menziesii on steep rock faces, where water movements become irregular, or by Ascoseira mirabilis and Palmaria decipiens on weakly inclined slopes with steady rolling water movements. In the central sublittoral above 15 m, where turbulence is still active, Desmarestia anceps is outcompeting all other species on solid substratum, However, the species is not able to persist on loose material under these conditions. Instead, Himantothallus grandifolius may occur. Deeper, where turbulence usually is negligible, Desmarestia anceps also covers loose material. The change of dominance to Himantothallus grandifolius in the deep sublittoral cannot completely be explained at present. Himantothallus grandifolius also prevails in a mixed assemblage under the influence of grounding icebergs. Most of the smaller algae are opportunists with different degrees of tolerance for turbulence, but some apparently need more stable microhabitats and thus are dependent from continuing suppression of competitive large phaeophytes.
