In this paper, the implementation aspects and constraints of the simplest network coding (NC) schemes for a two-way relay channel (TWRC) composed of a user equipment (mobile terminal), an LTE relay station (RS) and an LTE base station (eNB) are considered in order to assess the usefulness of the NC in more realistic scenarios. The information exchange rate gain (IERG), the energy reduction gain (ERG) and the resource utilization gain (RUG) of the NC schemes with and without subcarrier division duplexing (SDD) are obtained by computer simulations. The usefulness of the NC schemes are evaluated for varying traffic load levels, the geographical distances between the nodes, the RS transmit powers, and the maximum numbers of retransmissions. Simulation results show that the NC schemes with and without SDD, have the throughput gains 0.5% and 25%, the ERGs 7 - 12% and 16 - 25%, and the RUGs 0.5 - 3.2%, respectively. It is found that the NC can provide performance gains also for the users at the cell edge. Furthermore, the ERGs of the NC increase with the transmit power of the relay while the ERGs of the NC remain the same even when the maximum number of retransmissions is reduced.

This paper attempts to address the effectiveness of physical-layer network coding (PNC) on the capacity improvement for multi-hop multicast in random wireless ad hoc networks (WAHNs). While it can be shown that there is a capacity gain by PNC, we can prove that the per session throughput capacity with PNC is ? (nR(n))), where n is the total number of nodes, R(n) is the communication range, and each multicast session consists of a constant number of sinks. The result implies that PNC cannot improve the capacity order of multicast in random WAHNs, which is different from the intuition that PNC may improve the capacity order as it allows simultaneous signal reception and combination. We propose a novel 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmitter based on two cascaded IQ modulators driven by four separate binary electrical signals. The proposed 16-QAM transmitter features scalable configuration and stable performance with simple bias-control. Generation of 16-QAM signals at 40 Gbaud is experimentally demonstrated for the first time and visualized with a high speed constellation analyzer. The proposed modulator is also compared to two other schemes. We investigate the modulator bandwidth requirements and tolerance to accumulated chromatic dispersion through numerical simulations, and the minimum theoretical insertion attenuation is calculated analytically.

This thesis considers sparse approximation of still images as the basis of a lossy compression system. The Matching Pursuit (MP) algorithm is presented as a method particularly suited for application in lossy scalable image coding. Its multichannel extension, capable of exploiting inter-channel correlations, is found to be an efficient way to represent colour data in RGB colour space. Known problems with MP, high computational complexity of encoding and dictionary design, are tackled by finding an appropriate partitioning of an image. The idea of performing MP in the spatio-frequency domain after transform such as Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is explored. The main challenge, though, is to encode the image representation obtained after MP into a bit-stream. Novel approaches for encoding the atomic decomposition of a signal and colour amplitudes quantisation are proposed and evaluated. The image codec that has been built is capable of competing with scalable coders such as JPEG 2000 and SPIHT in terms of compression ratio.

We experimentally demonstrate an all-optical binary counter composed of four semiconductor optical amplifier based all-optical switching gates. The time-of-flight optical circuit operates with bit-differential delays between the exclusive-OR gate used for modulo-2 binary addition and the AND gate used for binary carry detection. A movie of the counter operating in real time is presented.

We present information-theory analysis of the tradeoff between bit-error rate improvement and the data-rate loss using skewed channel coding to suppress pattern-dependent errors in digital communications. Without loss of generality, we apply developed general theory to the particular example of a high-speed fiber communication system with a strong patterning effect. © 2007 IEEE.

Distributed source coding (DSC) has recently been considered as an efficient approach to data compression in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Using this coding method multiple sensor nodes compress their correlated observations without inter-node communications. Therefore energy and bandwidth can be efficiently saved. In this paper, we investigate a randombinning based DSC scheme for remote source estimation in WSN and its performance of estimated signal to distortion ratio (SDR). With the introduction of a detailed power consumption model for wireless sensor communications, we quantitatively analyze the overall network energy consumption of the DSC scheme. We further propose a novel energy-aware transmission protocol for the DSC scheme, which flexibly optimizes the DSC performance in terms of either SDR or energy consumption, by adapting the source coding and transmission parameters to the network conditions. Simulations validate the energy efficiency of the proposed adaptive transmission protocol. © 2007 IEEE.

In this work, we determine the coset weight spectra of all binary cyclic codes of lengths up to 33, ternary cyclic and negacyclic codes of lengths up to 20 and of some binary linear codes of lengths up to 33 which are distance-optimal, by using some of the algebraic properties of the codes and a computer assisted search. Having these weight spectra the monotony of the function of the undetected error probability after t-error correction P(t)ue (C,p) could be checked with any precision for a linear time. We have used a programm written in Maple to check the monotony of P(t)ue (C,p) for the investigated codes for a finite set of points of p € [0, p/(q-1)] and in this way to determine which of them are not proper.

The problem of efficient computing of the affine vector operations (addition of two vectors and multiplication of a vector by a scalar over GF (q)), and also the weight of a given vector, is important for many problems in coding theory, cryptography, VLSI technology etc. In this paper we propose a new way of representing vectors over GF (3) and GF (4) and we describe an efficient performance of these affine operations. Computing weights of binary vectors is also discussed.
