Are evaporation of graphite with Fe, Co and Ni yields two distinct types of metal nanoparticles, wrapped in graphitic layers and highly resistant to oxidation. Electron microscopy shows that the metal particles (10-40 nm) in the stub region are encapsulated in carbon onions, the particles in the soot being considerably smaller (2-15 nm). The metal particles in the soot are either ferromagnetic with lowered Curie temperatures or superparamagnetic.

This paper presents an efficient Simulated Annealing with valid solution mechanism for finding an optimum conflict-free transmission schedule for a broadcast radio network. This is known as a Broadcast Scheduling Problem (BSP) and shown as an NP-complete problem, in earlier studies. Because of this NP-complete nature, earlier studies used genetic algorithms, mean field annealing, neural networks, factor graph and sum product algorithm, and sequential vertex coloring algorithm to obtain the solution. In our study, a valid solution mechanism is included in simulated annealing. Because of this inclusion, we are able to achieve better results even for networks with 100 nodes and 300 links. The results obtained using our methodology is compared with all the other earlier solution methods.

A mathematical model has been developed for predicting the performance of rotating arcs in SF6 gas by considering the energy balance and force balance equations. The finite difference technique has been adopted for the computer simulation of the arc characteristics. This method helps in considering the spatial variation of the transport and radiative properties of the arc. All the three heat loss mechanisms-conduction, convection, and radiation-have been considered. Results obtained over a 10 ms (half cycle of 50 Hz wave) current flow period for 1.4 kA (peak) and 4.2 kA (peak), show that the proposed arc model gives the expected behavior of the arc over the range of currents studied.

We show that the problem of two anyons interacting through a simple harmonic potential or a Coulomb potential is supersymmetric. The supersymmetry operators map a theory described by statistics parameter θ to one described by π+θ. Thus fermions and bosons go into each other, while semions are supersymmetric by themselves. The simple harmonic problem has a Sp(4) symmetry for any value of θ which explains the energy degeneracies.

We build on the formulation developed in S. Sridhar and N. K. Singh J. Fluid Mech. 664, 265 (2010)] and present a theory of the shear dynamo problem for small magnetic and fluid Reynolds numbers, but for arbitrary values of the shear parameter. Specializing to the case of a mean magnetic field that is slowly varying in time, explicit expressions for the transport coefficients alpha(il) and eta(iml) are derived. We prove that when the velocity field is nonhelical, the transport coefficient alpha(il) vanishes. We then consider forced, stochastic dynamics for the incompressible velocity field at low Reynolds number. An exact, explicit solution for the velocity field is derived, and the velocity spectrum tensor is calculated in terms of the Galilean-invariant forcing statistics. We consider forcing statistics that are nonhelical, isotropic, and delta correlated in time, and specialize to the case when the mean field is a function only of the spatial coordinate X-3 and time tau; this reduction is necessary for comparison with the numerical experiments of A. Brandenburg, K. H. Radler, M. Rheinhardt, and P. J. Kapyla Astrophys. J. 676, 740 (2008)]. Explicit expressions are derived for all four components of the magnetic diffusivity tensor eta(ij) (tau). These are used to prove that the shear-current effect cannot be responsible for dynamo action at small Re and Rm, but for all values of the shear parameter.

We consider discrete-time versions of two classical problems in the optimal control of admission to a queueing system: i) optimal routing of arrivals to two parallel queues and ii) optimal acceptance/rejection of arrivals to a single queue. We extend the formulation of these problems to permit a k step delay in the observation of the queue lengths by the controller. For geometric inter-arrival times and geometric service times the problems are formulated as controlled Markov chains with expected total discounted cost as the minimization objective. For problem i) we show that when k = 1, the optimal policy is to allocate an arrival to the queue with the smaller expected queue length (JSEQ: Join the Shortest Expected Queue). We also show that for this problem, for k greater than or equal to 2, JSEQ is not optimal. For problem ii) we show that when k = 1, the optimal policy is a threshold policy. There are, however, two thresholds m(0) greater than or equal to m(1) > 0, such that mo is used when the previous action was to reject, and mi is used when the previous action was to accept.

The mechanism of reduction of iron and chromium oxide from synthetic electric are furnace stainless steelmaking slags has been studied. The activation energy for reduction of FeO depends on the FeO content of the slag and the nature of the product formed. The rate of reduction of both FeO and Cr2O3 is controlled by diffusion of ions in the slag phase. The reduction of Cr2O3 primarily takes place at the slag/Fe-C droplets interface. IS/1352b. Observations of surface flow patterns of steel and aluminum GTAW pools have been made using a pulsed laser visualization system. The weld pool convection is found to be three-dimensional with the azimuthal circulation depending on the location of the clamp with respect to the torch. Oscillation of steel pools and undulating motion in aluminum weld pools are also observed even with steady process parameters. Current axisymmetric numerical models are unable to explain such phenomena. A three-dimensional computational study is carried out in this study to explain the rotational flow in aluminum weld pools.

We discuss a many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two dimensions introduced recently by Murthy, Bhaduri and Sen. Apart from an analysis of some exact solutions in the many-body system, we analyse in detail the two-body problem which is completely solvable. We show that the solution of the two-body problem reduces to solving a known differential equation due to Heun. We show that the two-body spectrum becomes remarkably simple for large interaction strengths and the level structure resembles that of the Landau levels. We also clarify the 'ultraviolet' regularization which is needed to define an inverse-square potential properly and discuss its implications for our model.

The problem of spurious patterns in neural associative memory models is discussed, Some suggestions to solve this problem from the literature are reviewed and their inadequacies are pointed out, A solution based on the notion of neural self-interaction with a suitably chosen magnitude is presented for the Hebb learning rule. For an optimal learning rule based on linear programming, asymmetric dilution of synaptic connections is presented as another solution to the problem of spurious patterns, With varying percentages of asymmetric dilution it is demonstrated numerically that this optimal learning rule leads to near total suppression of spurious patterns. For practical usage of neural associative memory networks a combination of the two solutions with the optimal learning rule is recommended to be the best proposition.

Routing of floods is essential to control the flood flow at the flood control station such that it is within the specified safe limit. In this paper, the applicability of the extended Muskingum method is examined for routing of floods for a case study of Hirakud reservoir, Mahanadi river basin, India. The inflows to the flood control station are of two types-one controllable which comprises of reservoir releases for power and spill and the other is uncontrollable which comprises of inflow from lower tributaries and intermediate catchment between the reservoir and the flood control station. Muskingum model is improved to incorporate multiple sources of inflows and single outflow to route the flood in the reach. Instead of time lag and prismoidal flow parameters, suitable coefficients for various types of inflows were derived using Linear Programming. Presently, the decisions about operation of gates of Hirakud dam are being taken once in 12 h during floods. However, four time intervals of 24, 18, 12 and 6 h are examined to test the sensitivity of the routing time interval on the computed flood flow at the flood control station. It is observed that mean relative error decreases with decrease in routing interval both for calibration and testing phase. It is concluded that the extended Muskingum method can be explored for similar reservoir configurations such as Hirakud reservoir with suitable modifications. We consider the effect of subdividing the potential barrier along the reaction coordinate on Kramer's escape rate for a model potential, Using the known supersymmetric potential approach, we show the existence of an optimal number of subdivisions that maximizes the rate, We cast the problem as a mean first passage time problem of a biased random walker and obtain equivalent results, We briefly summarize the results of our investigation on the increase in the escape rate by placing a blow-torch in the unstable part of one of the potential wells.
