The present dissertation is devoted to the construction of exact and approximate analytical solutions of the problem of light propagation in highly nonlinear media. It is demonstrated that for many experimental conditions, the problem can be studied under the geometrical optics approximation with a sufficient accuracy. Based on the renormalization group symmetry analysis, exact analytical solutions of the eikonal equations with a higher order refractive index are constructed. A new analytical approach to the construction of approximate solutions is suggested. Based on it, approximate solutions for various boundary conditions, nonlinear refractive indices and dimensions are constructed. Exact analytical expressions for the nonlinear self-focusing positions are deduced. On the basis of the obtained solutions a general rule for the single filament intensity is derived; it is demonstrated that the scaling law (the functional dependence of the self-focusing position on the peak beam intensity) is defined by a form of the nonlinear refractive index but not the beam shape at the boundary. Comparisons of the obtained solutions with results of experiments and numerical simulations are discussed.

Spiro-starburst-structures with symmetric globular structures in forms of first and second generations that readily form stable amorphous glasses have been synthesized and then characterised in this work. During the synthesis of these materials, possibilities of the extension of the chains of the phenyl rings in 2,2’,7 and 7’-positions of the central core of the spirobifluorene as well as the 2’,7 and 7’-positions of the terminal spirobifluorene units of the spiro-starburst-structures have been investigated so that solubilities and morphologies of the compounds are not negatively influenced. Their morphological properties have been explored by recording their decomposition temperature and glass transition temperature. These compounds possessing two perpendicular arrangement of the two molecular halves show high glass transition temperature (Tg), which is one of the most important parameter indicating the stability of the amorphous state of the material for optoelectronic devices like organic light emitting diodes. Within the species of second generation compounds, for example, 4-spiro3 shows the highest Tg (330 °C) and the highest branching degree. When one [4B(SBF)SBF-SBF 84] or two [4SBFSBF-SBF 79] terminal spirobifluorene units are removed, the Tg decreases to 318 °C and 307 °C respectively. Photo absorption and fluorescence spectra and cyclic voltammetry measurements are taken in account to characterize the optoelectronic properties of the compounds. Spiro-starburst-structures emit radiation in the blue region of the visible spectrum. The peak maxima of absorption and emission spectra are observed to be at higher wavelength in the molecules with longer chromophore chains than in the molecules with shorter chromophore chains. Excitation spectra are monitored with their emission peak maxima. The increasing absorbing species in molecule leads to increasing molar extinction coefficient. In the case of 4B(TP)SBF-SBF 53 and 4B(SBF)SBF-SBF 84, the greater values of the molar extinction coefficients (43*104 and 44*104 L mol-1 cm-1 respectively) are the evidences of the presence of four times octiphenyl conjugation rings and eight times terminal fluorene units respectively. The optical properties of solid states of these compounds in the form of thin film indicate that the intermolecular interaction and aggregation of individual molecules in neat amorphous films are effectively hindered by their sterically demanding structures. Accordingly, in solid state, they behave like isolated molecules in highly dilute solution. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of these compounds show electrochemically reversibility and stability. Furthermore, the zeolitic nature (host-guest) of the molecular sieve of the synthesized spiro-starburst-structures has been analysed by thermogravimetric analysis method.

We derive a universal model for atom pairs interacting with non-resonant light via the polarizability anisotropy, based on the long range properties of the scattering. The corresponding dynamics can be obtained using a nodal line technique to solve the asymptotic Schrödinger equation. It consists of imposing physical boundary conditions at long range and vanishing the wavefunction at a position separating the inner zone and the asymptotic region. We show that nodal lines which depend on the intensity of the non-resonant light can satisfactorily account for the effect of the polarizability at short range. The approach allows to determine the resonance structure, energy, width, channel mixing and hybridization even for narrow resonances.

Non-resonant light interacting with diatomics via the polarizability anisotropy couples different rotational states and may lead to strong hybridization of the motion. The modification of shape resonances and low-energy scattering states due to this interaction can be fully captured by an asymptotic model, based on the long-range properties of the scattering (Crubellier et al 2015 New J. Phys. 17 045020). Remarkably, the properties of the field-dressed shape resonances in this asymptotic multi-channel description are found to be approximately linear in the field intensity up to fairly large intensity. This suggests a perturbative single-channel approach to be sufficient to study the control of such resonances by the non-resonant field. The multi-channel results furthermore indicate the dependence on field intensity to present, at least approximately, universal characteristics. Here we combine the nodal line technique to solve the asymptotic Schrödinger equation with perturbation theory. Comparing our single channel results to those obtained with the full interaction potential, we find nodal lines depending only on the field-free scattering length of the diatom to yield an approximate but universal description of the field-dressed molecule, confirming universal behavior.

This paper approaches the topic of urban/community gardening not through the lens of urban theory per se but in light of basic farming realities such as growing season and land availability. Food security comprises availability and affordability. In the context of North American and Western European societies, only food affordability normally merits public discourse. In practice, governments have little or no means to change food affordability, in view of prevailing capitalistic free-market structures. In the current wave of popular exuberance, civic politicians and others have promoted the belief that community gardening could be the pathway to produce affordable food. The formidable obstacles to this pursuit include the availability of (low-cost) land within the highly-densified city limit, insufficient ambient temperature and water supply during the growing season and the contemporary structure of society. Overcoming these fundamental hurdles carries significant negative environmental and economic consequences.

L’estudi de la criminalitat és multifactorial, cal destriar en la mesura del possible els factors ambientals, d’entorn urbà, que poden jugar el paper de facilitadors de la delinqüència. Les tipologies delictives són diverses i amb motivacions "mòbils" diferenciats, el que confereix dificultats a l’estudi de la criminalitat, és per aquesta raó que es trien dues tipologies de robatoris contra el patrimoni per ser analitzats: robatoris amb força a interior de domicili (vivenda) i els furts, en un marc de ciutat petita-mitjana, com és el cas de Girona. El coneixement per part de l’autor del marc urbà n’és un part essencial per desenvolupar l’estudi. Un dels objectius finalistes és aconseguir avançar en estudis de diagnosi criminal de les ciutats; així com en el coneixement dels patrons espaials que tenen les tipologies delictives i la influència de les característiques del disseny urbà sobre la criminalitat. La metodologia que s’implementarà serà: recerca bibliogràfica, estadística descriptiva i inferencial, sistemes d’informació geogràfica, així com la deducció a partir de la visualització de la cartografia generada i un treball de camp de les zones d’alta ocurrència delictiva dels delictes esmentats. Pel que fa a les hipòtesis principals: els robatoris contra el patrimoni no es concentren en àrees degradades urbanísticament sinó ans el contrari en ambients urbans cuidats. Aquesta hipòtesi es contraposa a la teoria criminal de la "Broken Windows", que esmenta que els espais urbans degradats és on hi ha menys ocupació d’espai públic i més delinqüència. Una altra hipòtesi important és que els espais percebuts com a segurs, respecte les tipologies delictives esmentades, són els més insegurs

L’objectiu d’aquest treball és analitzar el disseny, la planificació i l’aplicació de metodologies d’aprenentatge actiu, en una determinada assignatura de la llicenciatura d’Economia, per tal d’aconseguir una major implicació de l’estudiant en el seu procés d’aprenentatge, reduint el pes de les tradicionals classes magistrals, amb la intenció d’aconseguir millorar els coneixements adquirits i assolir algunes competències, que fins ara no s’havien plantejat. Malgrat tractar-se d’una assignatura optativa per alumnes de segon cicle, i on s’analitzen les característiques dels problemes mediambientals, que acostumen a tenir per si mateixos força interès entre la gent més jove, el nivell de participació dels estudiants davant de les preguntes formulades a classe o en els intents de generar algun tipus de debat o discussió sobre alguna problemàtica concreta tenien una molt baixa resposta per part dels estudiants. Les dades de l’enquesta de valoració de l’assignatura, per part dels estudiants, reflecteixen la bona valoració per part dels estudiants del sistema de pràctiques que integren l’avaluació continuada, de la utilització del Moodle com a Entorn Virtual de Formació, de les metodologies docents aplicades a l’assignatura i de l’aportació de nous coneixements. Aquests canvis metodològics impliquen una major inversió en temps de dedicació del professor i també de l’alumne. El professor ha de realitzar més treball previ al contacte amb l’alumne a l’hora de preparar les diverses activitats, ha de dedicar més temps al seguiment del procés d’aprenentatge i a la motivació de l’alumne. És imprescindible que el professor elabori de manera adequada i detallada la planificació de les activitats a realitzar en l’assignatura. Això permetrà que l’alumne pugui distribuir correctament el seu temps i pugui assolir els objectius del curs sense fracassar

Catadioptric sensors are combinations of mirrors and lenses made in order to obtain a wide field of view. In this paper we propose a new sensor that has omnidirectional viewing ability and it also provides depth information about the nearby surrounding. The sensor is based on a conventional camera coupled with a laser emitter and two hyperbolic mirrors. Mathematical formulation and precise specifications of the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the sensor are discussed. Our approach overcomes limitations of the existing omni-directional sensors and eventually leads to reduced costs of production

Positioning a robot with respect to objects by using data provided by a camera is a well known technique called visual servoing. In order to perform a task, the object must exhibit visual features which can be extracted from different points of view. Then, visual servoing is object-dependent as it depends on the object appearance. Therefore, performing the positioning task is not possible in presence of non-textured objects or objects for which extracting visual features is too complex or too costly. This paper proposes a solution to tackle this limitation inherent to the current visual servoing techniques. Our proposal is based on the coded structured light approach as a reliable and fast way to solve the correspondence problem. In this case, a coded light pattern is projected providing robust visual features independently of the object appearance

This paper focuses on the problem of realizing a plane-to-plane virtual link between a camera attached to the end-effector of a robot and a planar object. In order to do the system independent to the object surface appearance, a structured light emitter is linked to the camera so that 4 laser pointers are projected onto the object. In a previous paper we showed that such a system has good performance and nice characteristics like partial decoupling near the desired state and robustness against misalignment of the emitter and the camera (J. Pages et al., 2004). However, no analytical results concerning the global asymptotic stability of the system were obtained due to the high complexity of the visual features utilized. In this work we present a better set of visual features which improves the properties of the features in (J. Pages et al., 2004) and for which it is possible to prove the global asymptotic stability
