This article aims to analyze the work The flagellates East Wind (1959), Cape Verdean writer Manuel Lopes, highlighting their contribution to the development of Cape Verde literature, from a regionalist perspective. In this work, Manuel Lopes introduces the reader to the hard reality that the panel are subjected the inhabitants of St. Anthony, victims of insular confinement and natural phenomena that afflict the region. Thus, this analysis understand regionalism as a timeless current, as Ligia Chiappini (1995), which does not exclude the universalism of the work and seek to identify the specifics of the landscape, the structure and organization of the Cape Verdean society, customs, cuisine, music, way of speaking as a translation for the construction of national identity. Therefore, we will use as theorists subsidies Manuel Ferreira (1997), Daniel Spínola (1998), Simone Caputo Gomes (2008) (2015), João Paulo Madeira (2014), Maria Aparecida Santilli (1985), Maria Nazareth Soares Fonseca e Terezinha Taborna Moreira (2014), among others.

O presente ensaio nasce com o objetivo de travar uma discussão entre o surgimento da literatura infantil em terras brasileiras e persistência da censura no que tange o referido sistema literário, posto que infelizmente, ainda hoje, para muitos, a literatura infantil e a juvenil deve ter a função de ensinar de acordo com a “moral” de alguns grupos sociais. Ademais, nos interessa trazer a leitura de três obras literárias que possuem como elo a queima a livros em diferentes contextos históricos e sociais, sendo elas: O mágico de verdade(2008) de Gustavo Bernardo, Beto, o analfabeto(2008), de Drummond Amorin e Assassinato na Biblioteca(2009) de Helena Gomes, argumentamos que as queimas de livros ficcionais dialogam veementemente com a dificuldade de acesso a obras literárias em escolas públicas brasileiras e o descaso de governantes a fim de alimentarem políticas de Estados que assegurem que os alunos cadastrados em escolas públicas brasileiras tenham acesso a obra de qualidade estética. Para tanto, nos apoiaremos em trabalhos pioneiros acerca da história do livro, tais como Uma história da leitura (1997), Alberto Manguel e História da Leitura (2006), Steven R. Fischer, a fim de validarmos que queimar livros sempre foi uma prática dos detentores do poder.

The influence of different instructional constraints on movement organisation and performance outcomes of the penalty kick (PK) was investigated according to participant age. Sixty penalty takers and twelve goalkeepers from two age groups (under 15 and under 17) performed 300 PKs under five different task conditions, including: no explicit instructional constraints provided (Control); instructional constraints on immobility (IMMOBILE) and mobility (MOBILE) of goalkeepers; and, use of keeper-dependent (DEP) and independent (INDEP) strategies by penalty takers. Every trial was video recorded and digitised using motion analysis techniques. Dependent variables (DVs) were: movement speed of penalty takers and the angles between the goalkeeper's position and the goal line (i.e., diving angle), and between the penalty taker and a line crossing the penalty spot and the centre of the goal (i.e., run up angle). Instructions significantly influenced the way that goalkeepers (higher values in MOBILE relative to Control) and penalty takers (higher values in Control than in DEP) used movement speed during performance, as well as the goalkeepers' movements and diving angle (less pronounced dives in the MOBILE condition compared with INDEP). Results showed how different instructions constrained participant movements during performance, although players' performance efficacy remained constant, reflecting their adaptive variability.

Genetic variability in the strength and precision of fear memory is hypothesised to contribute to the etiology of anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder. We generated fear-susceptible (F-S) or fear-resistant (F-R) phenotypes from an F8 advanced intercross line (AIL) of C57BL/6J and DBA/2J inbred mice by selective breeding. We identified specific traits underlying individual variability in Pavlovian conditioned fear learning and memory. Offspring of selected lines differed in the acquisition of conditioned fear. Furthermore, F-S mice showed greater cued fear memory and generalised fear in response to a novel context than F-R mice. F-S mice showed greater basal corticosterone levels and hypothalamic corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA levels than F-R mice, consistent with higher hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis drive. Hypothalamic mineralocorticoid receptor and CRH receptor 1 mRNA levels were decreased in F-S mice as compared with F-R mice. Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) was used to investigate basal levels of brain activity. MEMRI identified a pattern of increased brain activity in F-S mice that was driven primarily by the hippocampus and amygdala, indicating excessive limbic circuit activity in F-S mice as compared with F-R mice. Thus, selection pressure applied to the AIL population leads to the accumulation of heritable trait-relevant characteristics within each line, whereas non-behaviorally relevant traits remain distributed. Selected lines therefore minimise false-positive associations between behavioral phenotypes and physiology. We demonstrate that intrinsic differences in HPA axis function and limbic excitability contribute to phenotypic differences in the acquisition and consolidation of associative fear memory. Identification of system-wide traits predisposing to variability in fear memory may help in the direction of more targeted and efficacious treatments for fear-related pathology. Through short-term selection in a B6D2 advanced intercross line we created mouse populations divergent for the retention of Pavlovian fear memory. Trait distinctions in HPA-axis drive and fear network circuitry could be made between naïve animals in the two lines. These data demonstrate underlying physiological and neurological differences between Fear-Susceptible and Fear-Resistant animals in a natural population. F-S and F-R mice may therefore be relevant to a spectrum of disorders including depression, anxiety disorders and PTSD for which altered fear processing occurs.

The Brain Research Institute (BRI) uses various types of indirect measurements, including EEG and fMRI, to understand and assess brain activity and function. As well as the recovery of generic information about brain function, research also focuses on the utilisation of such data and understanding to study the initiation, dynamics, spread and suppression of epileptic seizures. To assist with the future focussing of this aspect of their research, the BRI asked the MISG 2010 participants to examine how the available EEG and fMRI data and current knowledge about epilepsy should be analysed and interpreted to yield an enhanced understanding about brain activity occurring before, at commencement of, during, and after a seizure. Though the deliberations of the study group were wide ranging in terms of the related matters considered and discussed, considerable progress was made with the following three aspects. (1) The science behind brain activity investigations depends crucially on the quality of the analysis and interpretation of, as well as the recovery of information from, EEG and fMRI measurements. A number of specific methodologies were discussed and formalised, including independent component analysis, principal component analysis, profile monitoring and change point analysis (hidden Markov modelling, time series analysis, discontinuity identification). (2) Even though EEG measurements accurately and very sensitively record the onset of an epileptic event or seizure, they are, from the perspective of understanding the internal initiation and localisation, of limited utility. They only record neuronal activity in the cortical (surface layer) neurons of the brain, which is a direct reflection of the type of electrical activity they have been designed to record. Because fMRI records, through the monitoring of blood flow activity, the location of localised brain activity within the brain, the possibility of combining fMRI measurements with EEG, as a joint inversion activity, was discussed and examined in detail. (3) A major goal for the BRI is to improve understanding about ``when'' (at what time) an epileptic seizure actually commenced before it is identified on an eeg recording, ``where'' the source of this initiation is located in the brain, and ``what'' is the initiator. Because of the general agreement in the literature that, in one way or another, epileptic events and seizures represent abnormal synchronisations of localised and/or global brain activity the modelling of synchronisations was examined in some detail. There have been different approaches to studying penalty-kick performance in association football. In this paper, the authors synthesize key findings within an ecological dynamics theoretical framework. According to this theoretical perspective, information is the cornerstone for understanding the dynamics of action regulation in penalty-kick performance. Research suggests that investigators need to identify the information sources that are most relevant to penalty-kick performance. An important task is to understand how constraints can channel (i.e. change, emphasize or mask) information sources used to regulate upcoming actions and how the influence of these constraints is expressed in players' behavioural dynamics. Due to the broad range of constraints influencing penalty-kick performance, it is recommended that future research adopts an interdisciplinary focus on performance assessment to overcome the current lack of representativeness in penalty-kick experimental designs. Such an approach would serve to capture the information-based control of action of both players as components of this dyadic system in competitive sport.

Advanced stage head and neck cancers (HNC) with distant metastasis, as well as prostate cancers (PC), are devastating diseases currently lacking efficient treatment options. One promising developmental approach in cancer treatment is the use of oncolytic adenoviruses, especially in combination therapy with conventional cancer therapies. The safety of the approach has been tested in many clinical trials. However, antitumor efficacy needs to be improved in order to establish oncolytic viruses as a viable treatment alternative. To be able to test in vivo the effects on anti-tumor efficiency of a multimodal combination therapy of oncolytic adenoviruses with the standard therapeutic combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and Cetuximab monoclonal antibody (mAb), a xenograft HNC tumor model was developed. This model mimics the typical clinical situation as it is initially sensitive to cetuximab, but resistance develops eventually. Surprisingly, but in agreement with recent findings for chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a higher proportion of cells positive for HNC cancer stem cell markers were found in the tumors refractory to cetuximab. In vitro as well as in vivo results found in this study support the multimodal combination therapy of oncolytic adenoviruses with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and monoclonal antibody therapy to achieve increased anti-tumor efficiency and even complete tumor eradication with lower treatment doses required. In this study, it was found that capsid modified oncolytic viruses have increased gene transfer to cancer cells as well as an increased antitumor effect. In order to elucidate the mechanism of how oncolytic viruses promote radiosensitization of tumor cells in vivo, replicative deficient viruses expressing several promising radiosensitizing viral proteins were tested. The results of this study indicated that oncolytic adenoviruses promote radiosensitization by delaying the repair of DNA double strand breaks in tumor cells. Based on the promising data of the first study, two tumor double-targeted oncolytic adenoviruses armed with the fusion suicide gene FCU1 or with a fully human mAb specific for human Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte-Associated Antigen 4 (CTLA-4) were produced. FCU1 encodes a bifunctional fusion protein that efficiently catalyzes the direct conversion of 5-FC, a relatively nontoxic antifungal agent, into the toxic metabolites 5-fluorouracil and 5-fluorouridine monophosphate, bypassing the natural resistance of certain human tumor cells to 5-fluorouracil. Anti-CTLA4 mAb promotes direct killing of tumor cells via apoptosis and most importantly immune system activation against the tumors. These armed oncolytic viruses present increased anti-tumor efficacy both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the unique tumor targeted gene transfer of oncolytic adenoviruses, functional high tumor titers but low systemic concentrations of the armed proteins were generated. In addition, supernatants of tumor cells infected with Ad5/3-24aCTLA4, which contain anti-CTLA4 mAb, were able to effectively immunomodulate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of cancer patients with advanced tumors. -- In conclusion, the results presented in this thesis suggest that genetically engineered oncolytic adenoviruses have great potential in the treatment of advanced and metastatic HNC and PC.

Malaria is an infectious disease that mainly affects children and pregnant women from tropical countries. The mortality rate of people infected with malaria per year is enormous and became a public health concern. The main factor that has contributed to the success of malaria proliferation is the increased number of drug resistant parasites. To counteract this trend, research has been done in nanotechnology and nanomedicine, for the development of new biocompatible systems capable of incorporating drugs, lowering the resistance progress, contributing for diagnosis, control and treatment of malaria by target delivery. In this review, we discussed the main problems associated with the spread of malaria and the most recent developments in nanomedicine for anti-malarial drug delivery. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. The high species richness of tropical forests has long been recognized, yet there remains substantial uncertainty regarding the actual number of tropical tree species. Using a pantropical tree inventory database from closed canopy forests, consisting of 657,630 trees belonging to 11,371 species, we use a fitted value of Fisher's alpha and an approximate pantropical stem total to estimate the minimum number of tropical forest tree species to fall between similar to 40,000 and similar to 53,000, i.e., at the high end of previous estimates. Contrary to common assumption, the Indo-Pacific region was found to be as species-rich as the Neotropics, with both regions having a minimum of similar to 19,000-25,000 tree species. Continental Africa is relatively depauperate with a minimum of similar to 4,500-6,000 tree species. Very few species are shared among the African, American, and the Indo-Pacific regions. We provide a methodological framework for estimating species richness in trees that may help refine species richness estimates of tree-dependent taxa.
