Este artigo visa discutir, à luz da aprovação do Parecer n. 38/06 do Conselho Nacional de Educação que torna obrigatório o ensino de Filosofia e Sociologia no ensino médio, a pertinência do ensino de Psicologia, em particular no Estado de São Paulo, onde esta disciplina vem progressivamente perdendo espaço. Subsidia o debate, pesquisa de caráter etnográfico, composta por dois estudos de caso realizados em estabelecimentos de ensino, um público e um privado, do município de São Paulo, onde foram acompanhadas aulas de Psicologia mediante observação e analisadas questões relativas ao ensino dessa disciplina. Aspectos característicos de cada escola levaram a refletir sobre as disparidades do sistema educacional paulista, conduzindo à discussão sobre o ensino de Psicologia e sua contribuição, como ciência, nesse cenário.

O Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade tem sido evocado como justificativa corrente para o fracasso escolar de um número expressivo de crianças, atribuindo-se a elas a responsabilidade por não aprender e isentando de análise a escola e a sociedade nas quais estão inseridas. A situação se torna mais alarmante uma vez que a literatura a respeito aponta dificuldades no diagnóstico e na intervenção sobre esse tipo de transtorno, devidas à falta de clareza sobre o que é esse quadro clínico e em razão da não existência de estudos consistentes acerca das consequências futuras do uso de estimulantes nas crianças. Para discutir essas questões, a primeira parte do artigo apresenta a concepção hegemônica desse tipo de transtorno e sua compreensão do psiquismo infantil. A segunda parte aborda a maneira como a psicologia histórico-cultural analisa o desenvolvimento da atenção e o controle voluntário do comportamento humano, redimensionando a compreensão sobre o transtorno. Finalmente, são feitas algumas reflexões acerca do processo ensino-aprendizagem em crianças com desenvolvimento parcial das funções psicológicas superiores e do papel da psicologia e da pedagogia na compreensão do fenômeno para que sirvam de subsídio a medidas práticas em relação ao problema.

Impact of conduct disorder (CD) and substance use disorder (SUD) on constructive thinking skills and impulsivity was explored. 71 offending adolescents were assessed for CD and SUD. Furthermore, the constructive thinking inventory, the immediate and delayed memory tasks and the UPPS impulsive behaviour scale were administered. Results showed that youths with CD, independently from SUD, presented higher personality impulsivity (urgency) and altered constructive thinking skills (categorical thinking and personal superstitious thinking). Furthermore, trait-impulsivity explained variation in constructive thinking skills. The implications of these results were discussed.

Considerando o vínculo histórico entre psicologia e educação concernente aos processos de ensino e de aprendizagem escolar, apresentam-se dados relacionados a tal relação, nas publicações de Cadernos de Pesquisa - CP -, de 1980 a 2012. Buscou-se evidenciar como o vínculo entre essas áreas estabeleceu-se em torno do ensino de conteúdos e verificar se ele continua efetivo nas publicações de CP. A partir da análise de conteúdo de setenta artigos, encontrou-se que: nas décadas de 1980 e 1990, a teoria de Piaget foi predominante; de 2000 a 2012, diferentes correntes da psicologia dão base às discussões; nota-se decréscimo no número de artigos que articulam psicologia e educação nos processos de ensino de conteúdos. São discutidas questões referentes à atual relação entre as duas áreas.

Este trabalho é uma tentativa de compreensão dos processos de subjetivação (e seus efeitos políticos) envolvidos nos modos de conhecimento dos saberes psi. Para tal, será levantado um conjunto de definições quanto à subjetividade e a seus modos de produção. Em seguida, serão analisadas as contribuições sobre o tema por parte da teoria ator-rede. Mais adiante, serão tomadas dessa teoria algumas diretrizes para possíveis estudos sobre modos de subjetivação engendrados pelos saberes e práticas psi. De modo mais específico, serão trabalhadas as formas com que as pesquisas psi engendram mundos e sujeitos por meio de políticas ontológicas específicas, gerando formas extorsivas ou recalcitrantes de articulação. É nesse aspecto que será feita a discussão dos modos políticos dessas formas de subjetivação.

During adolescence numerous of important social abilities are acquired within interactions with peers. Severe psychiatric disorders interfere with the acquisition of these social skills. For example, due to excessive shyness, adolescents with psychiatric disorders may not experiment positive social interactions. Social skills training (SKT) may help adolescents to remediate to these diffi culties. This exploratory study aims to assess the SKT's effect on assertivity, in a population of adolescents presenting psychiatric disorder and attending a day care unit for adolescents. The SKT, delivered in group, deals with different themes such as contact, conversation, problem solving, confl ict, fail, success, learning, effort, separation, breakdown, and project. In this context, 38 adolescents (19 suffering from anxiety / mood disorder and 19 suffering from psychotic disorder) rate their level of assertivity before and after a SKT with the Rathus assertivity scale. This scale allows to differentiate between inhibited, assertive and assertiveaggressive adolescents. Results showed a general improvement on assertivity after the SKT. More specifi cally, adolescents suffering from anxiety disorder and the 'inhibited' adolescents showed the higher benefi t from the SKT. Thus, two hours per week of SKT seems to enhance social abilities in a population with severe psychiatric disorders. More specifi - cally, adolescents with anxiety / mood disorders reported more benefi ts of the SKT on their assertivity. Nevertheless, adolescents with psychotic disorders did not report strong benefi ts from the SKT despite the improvement observed at a clinical level. This observation raises questions about the usefulness of self-reported questionnaire to measure such benefi t for adolescents with psychosis.

The use of multiple legal and illegal substances by adolescents is a growing concern in all countries, but since no consensus about a taxonomy did emerge yet, it is difficult to understand the different patterns of consumption and to implement tailored prevention and treatment programs directed towards specific subgroups of the adolescent population. Using data from a Swiss survey on adolescent health, we analyzed the age at which ten legal and illegal substances were consumed for the first time ever by applying a method combining the strength of both automatic clustering and use of substance experts. Results were then compared to 30 socio-economic factors to establish the usefulness of and to validate our taxonomy. We also analyzed the succession of substance first use for each group. The final taxonomy consists of eight groups ranging from non-consumers to heavy drug addicts. All but four socio-economic factors were significantly associated with the taxonomy, the strongest associations being observed with health, behavior, and sexuality factors. Numerous factors influence adolescents in their decision to first try substances or to use them on a regular basis, and no factor alone can be considered as an absolute marker of problematic behavior regarding substance use. Different processes of experimentation with substances are associated with different behaviors, therefore focusing on only one substance or only one factor is not efficient. Prevention and treatment programs can then be tailored to address specific issues related to different youth subgroups.

PURPOSE: To ascertain the prevalence of piercing among a nationally representative sample of adolescents; to assess whether having a piercing is a marker for risk behaviors; and to determine whether having more than one piercing is a cumulative marker for risk behaviors. METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey of a nationally representative sample of adolescents aged 16 to 20 years (N=7548). Controlling for background variables, pierced and non-pierced youth were compared on risk behaviors related to drug use, sexual behavior, and suicide. In a second step, adolescents having one piercing were compared with those having more than one. In both cases, statistically significant variables in the bivariate analysis were included in a logistic regression. Analyses were conducted separately by gender. RESULTS: Overall, 20.2% of our sample had a piercing (excluding earlobes), and it was significantly more prevalent among females than among males (33.8% vs. 7.4%; P<.001). In the bivariate analysis, all risk behaviors were significantly associated with having a piercing, and most of them remained significant in the multivariate analysis. One third of pierced subjects had more than one piercing, with no gender difference in prevalence. In the multivariate analysis, females with more than one piercing were more likely to have had multiple partners and to use cannabis, while no differences were noted for males. CONCLUSIONS: Body piercing is becoming popular among Swiss adolescents, especially females. Having a body piercing seems to be a risk marker for risk behaviors. Moreover, having multiple piercings is a cumulative risk marker for females.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the socio-demographic as well as the health and psychiatric profiles of adolescents hospitalised for suicide attempt or overwhelming suicide ideation and to assess repetition of suicide attempt over a period of 18 months. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between April 2000 and September 2001, all patients aged 16 to 21 years admitted to the University Hospitals of Geneva and Lausanne for suicide attempt or ideation were included in the study. At this time (T0) semi-structured face to face interviews were conducted to identify socio-demographic data, mental health and antecedents regarding suicidal conducts. Current psychiatric status was assessed with the MINI (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Instrument). At T1 and T2, reassessments included psychiatric status (MINI) as well as lifestyles, socio-professional situation and suicidal behaviours. RESULTS: At T0, 269 subjects met the study criteria, among whom 83 subjects (56 girls and 27 boys) left the hospital too quickly to be involved or refused to participate in the study (final sample at T0: 149 girls; 37 boys). The participation rate at T1 and T2 was respectively 66% and 62% of the original sample. The percentage of adolescents meeting the criteria for psychiatric diagnoses (91%) was high: affective disorder (78%); anxiety disorder (64%); substance use disorder (39%); eating disorder (9%); psychotic disorder (11%); antisocial personality (7%) with most subjects (85%) having more than one disorder. Around 90% of the subjects interviewed at T1, and/or T2, had received follow-up care after their hospitalisation, either by a primary care physician or a psychotherapist or both. Two subjects died of violent death and 18% made a further suicide attempt. CONCLUSION: Most adolescents hospitalised for suicidal episodes suffer from psychiatric problems which should be addressed by a careful psychiatric assessment, followed up if needed by a structured after care plan.

Internet ha supuesto un nuevo paradigma en las relaciones interpersonales, especialmente entre los más jóvenes. En este artículo analizamos la interacción de dos agentes en el fenómeno de la comunicación, los adolescentes y los fotoblogs, con una perspectiva teórico-especulativa. El fotoblog es una herramienta virtual que los jóvenes de trece a dieciséis años, aproximadamente, han adaptado a sus necesidades para expresar sus ideas, sentimientos o fantasías. Creemos que, en este entorno, los sujetos pueden comunicarse en un espacio donde exploran su yo interior a partir de las representaciones, signos y símbolos que se muestran en la interfaz. En la actualidad, el adolescente vive en un contexto eminentemente visual y, así pues, no es de extrañar que sus acciones y formas comunicativas se centren en «lo visual», donde lo lineal y previsible deja paso a la rapidez, la retroalimentación y la continuidad. Las formalizaciones que se muestran en la interfaz son códigos propios que los jóvenes han creado para mostrar características identitarias mediante la imagen. Por tanto, mantenemos que para el adolescente el fotoblog no sólo es un medio, sino también un ambiente en el que puede crear signos de identidad por medio de las conversaciones virtuales que establece con sus pares en un entorno lúdico y desinhibido, donde juega con la imagen en un proceso de socialización.

Este trabalho apresenta a segunda versão do processo de avaliação dos periódicos brasileiros da área da psicologia, conduzida pela Comissão Editorial Capes-Anpepp. As demandas para a realização deste empreendimento, que teve a sua versão inicial realizada em 1999, são as seguintes: (a) qualificar os veículos científicos nos quais publicam pesquisadores brasileiros vinculados aos programas de pós-graduação em psicologia; (b) criar mecanismos para viabilizar a manutenção dos periódicos com melhor avaliação; (c) estabelecer parâmetros para o incremento da qualidade dos periódicos da área. Foram avaliados 51 periódicos da área citados nos relatórios dos programas de pós-graduação do período 1999-2000, usando uma ficha de avaliação contendo cinco conjuntos de itens (Normalização, Publicação, Circulação, Autoria e Conteúdo e Gestão editorial), acompanhada de instruções enviadas para os editores dos periódicos. Posteriormente, as fichas foram conferidas pela Comissão, gerando uma classificação de duas entradas, de Âmbito (Nacional/Local) e Qualidade (A/B/C). Os principais resultados indicam que houve uma perceptível melhora na classificação das revistas brasileiras da área, nos seus diversos aspectos. Questões vinculadas à avaliação e desafios para as novas etapas são discutidas.

BACKGROUND: In patients with Kawasaki disease, serial evaluation of the distribution and size of coronary artery aneurysms (CAA) is necessary for risk stratification and therapeutic management. Although transthoracic echocardiography is often sufficient for this purpose initially, visualization of the coronary arteries becomes progressively more difficult as children grow. We sought to prospectively compare coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and x-ray coronary angiography findings in patients with CAA caused by Kawasaki disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: Six subjects (age 10 to 25 years) with known CAA from Kawasaki disease underwent coronary MRA using a free-breathing T2-prepared 3D bright blood segmented k-space gradient echo sequence with navigator gating and tracking. All patients underwent x-ray coronary angiography within a median of 75 days (range, 1 to 359 days) of coronary MRA. There was complete agreement between MRA and x-ray angiography in the detection of CAA (n=11), coronary artery stenoses (n=2), and coronary occlusions (n=2). Excellent agreement was found between the 2 techniques for detection of CAA maximal diameter (mean difference=0.4 +/- 0.6 mm) and length (mean difference=1.4 +/- 1.6 mm). The 2 methods showed very similar results for proximal coronary artery diameter (mean difference=0.2 +/- 0.5 mm) and CAA distance from the ostia (mean difference=0.1 +/- 1.5 mm). CONCLUSION: Free-breathing 3D coronary MRA accurately defines CAA in patients with Kawasaki disease. This technique may provide a non-invasive alternative when transthoracic echocardiography image quality is insufficient, thereby reducing the need for serial x-ray coronary angiography in this patient group.

Family cohesion and adaptability, as operationalised in the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales III (FACES III), are two hypothesised dimensions of family functioning. We tested the properties of a French version of FACES III in school-children (mean age: 13 years; S.D:0.85) recruited from the general population and their parents. Separate confirmatory factor analyses were performed for adolescents and adults. The results of both analyses were compatible with a two-factor structure similar to that proposed by the authors of the original instrument. However, orthogonality between the two factors was only supported in the adult data. Internal reliability estimates were 0.78 and 0.68 in adolescents and 0.82 and 0.65 in adults, for cohesion and adaptability respectively.

BACKGROUND: The effect of the increasing prevalence of obesity on blood pressure (BP) secular trends is unclear. We analyzed BP and body mass index secular trends between 1998 and 2006 in children and adolescents of the Seychelles, a rapidly developing island state in the African region. METHODS AND RESULTS: School-based surveys were conducted annually between 1998 and 2006 among all students in 4 school grades (kindergarten and 4th, 7th, and 10th years of compulsory school). We used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria to define obesity and elevated BP. The same methods and instruments were used in all surveys. Some 25 586 children and adolescents 4 to 18 years of age contributed 43 867 observations. Although the prevalence of obesity in boys and girls increased from 5.1% and 6.0%, respectively, in 1998 to 2000 to 8.0% and 8.7% in 2004 to 2006, the prevalence of elevated BP decreased from 8.4% and 9.8% to 6.9% and 7.8%. During the interval, mean age-adjusted body mass index increased by 0.57 kg/m(2) in boys and 0.58 kg/m(2) in girls. Mean age- and height-adjusted systolic BP decreased by -3.0 mm Hg in boys and -2.8 mm Hg in girls, whereas mean diastolic BP did not change substantially in boys (-0.2 mm Hg) and increased slightly in girls (0.4 mm Hg). CONCLUSIONS: At a population level, the marked increase in the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents in the Seychelles was not associated with a commensurate secular rise in mean BP.

Viure és traçar petjades al terra mirant la plenitud de l’horitzó, fer-se present en el món i reinventar-lo, saber qui som i a on anem. La recerca de sentit existencial és un procés inherent a la condició humana, el qual és especialment significatiu a l’adolescència. En el seu compromís amb la vida: Com pot l’educació acompanyar els nois i les noies adolescents en el camí de cercar la seva identitat en un context social i cultural global, dinàmic i plurireferencial? Aprendre a crear sentit a la pròpia existència esdevé un aspecte fonamental en l’educació per al desenvolupament personal i la ciutadania. L‘aportació següent pretén destacar el paper que desenvolupen la creativitat i la corporeïtat en la consciència i expressió de la identitat des de la mirada ecosistèmica i transdisciplinar.
