The research activities have allowed the analysis of the driver assistance systems, called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in relation to road safety. The study is structured according to several evaluation steps, related to definite on-site tests that have been carried out with different samples of users, according to their driving experience with the ACC. The evaluation steps concern: •The testing mode and the choice of suitable instrumentation to detect the driver’s behaviour in relation to the ACC. •The analysis modes and outputs to be obtained, i.e.: - Distribution of attention and inattention; - Mental workload; - The Perception-Reaction Time (PRT), the Time To Collision (TTC) and the Time Headway (TH). The main purpose is to assess the interaction between vehicle drivers and ADAS, highlighting the inattention and variation of the workloads they induce regarding the driving task. The research project considered the use of a system for monitoring visual behavior (ASL Mobile Eye-XG - ME), a powerful GPS that allowed to record the kinematic data of the vehicle (Racelogic Video V-BOX) and a tool for reading brain activity (Electroencephalographic System - EEG). Just during the analytical phase, a second and important research objective was born: the creation of a graphical interface that would allow exceeding the frame count limit, making faster and more effective the labeling of the driver’s points of view. The results show a complete and exhaustive picture of the vehicle-driver interaction. It has been possible to highlight the main sources of criticalities related to the user and the vehicle, in order to concretely reduce the accident rate. In addition, the use of mathematical-computational methodologies for the analysis of experimental data has allowed the optimization and verification of analytical processes with neural networks that have made an effective comparison between the manual and automatic methodology.

In pursuit of aligning with the European Union's ambitious target of achieving a carbon-neutral economy by 2050, researchers, vehicle manufacturers, and original equipment manufacturers have been at the forefront of exploring cutting-edge technologies for internal combustion engines. The introduction of these technologies has significantly increased the effort required to calibrate the models implemented in the engine control units. Consequently the development of tools that reduce costs and the time required during the experimental phases, has become imperative. Additionally, to comply with ever-stricter limits on 〖"CO" 〗_"2" emissions, it is crucial to develop advanced control systems that enhance traditional engine management systems in order to reduce fuel consumption. Furthermore, the introduction of new homologation cycles, such as the real driving emissions cycle, compels manufacturers to bridge the gap between engine operation in laboratory tests and real-world conditions. Within this context, this thesis showcases the performance and cost benefits achievable through the implementation of an auto-adaptive closed-loop control system, leveraging in-cylinder pressure sensors in a heavy-duty diesel engine designed for mining applications. Additionally, the thesis explores the promising prospect of real-time self-adaptive machine learning models, particularly neural networks, to develop an automatic system, using in-cylinder pressure sensors for the precise calibration of the target combustion phase and optimal spark advance in a spark-ignition engines. To facilitate the application of these combustion process feedback-based algorithms in production applications, the thesis discusses the results obtained from the development of a cost-effective sensor for indirect cylinder pressure measurement. Finally, to ensure the quality control of the proposed affordable sensor, the thesis provides a comprehensive account of the design and validation process for a piezoelectric washer test system.

In this thesis, the problem of controlling a quadrotor UAV is considered. It is done by presenting an original control system, designed as a combination of Neural Networks and Disturbance Observer, using a composite learning approach for a system of the second order, which is a novel methodology in literature. After a brief introduction about the quadrotors, the concepts needed to understand the controller are presented, such as the main notions of advanced control, the basic structure and design of a Neural Network, the modeling of a quadrotor and its dynamics. The full simulator, developed on the MATLAB Simulink environment, used throughout the whole thesis, is also shown. For the guidance and control purposes, a Sliding Mode Controller, used as a reference, it is firstly introduced, and its theory and implementation on the simulator are illustrated. Finally the original controller is introduced, through its novel formulation, and implementation on the model. The effectiveness and robustness of the two controllers are then proven by extensive simulations in all different conditions of external disturbance and faults.

The amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex (M1) shows a large variability from trial to trial, although MEPs are evoked by the same repeated stimulus. A multitude of factors is believed to influence MEP amplitudes, such as cortical, spinal and motor excitability state. The goal of this work is to explore to which degree the variation in MEP amplitudes can be explained by the cortical state right before the stimulation. Specifically, we analyzed a dataset acquired on eleven healthy subjects comprising, for each subject, 840 single TMS pulses applied to the left M1 during acquisition of electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG). An interpretable convolutional neural network, named SincEEGNet, was utilized to discriminate between low- and high-corticospinal excitability trials, defined according to the MEP amplitude, using in input the pre-TMS EEG. This data-driven approach enabled considering multiple brain locations and frequency bands without any a priori selection. Post-hoc interpretation techniques were adopted to enhance interpretation by identifying the more relevant EEG features for the classification. Results show that individualized classifiers successfully discriminated between low and high M1 excitability states in all participants. Outcomes of the interpretation methods suggest the importance of the electrodes situated over the TMS stimulation site, as well as the relevance of the temporal samples of the input EEG closer to the stimulation time. This novel decoding method allows causal investigation of the cortical excitability state, which may be relevant for personalizing and increasing the efficacy of therapeutic brain-state dependent brain stimulation (for example in patients affected by Parkinson’s disease).

Il machine learning negli ultimi anni ha acquisito una crescente popolarità nell’ambito della ricerca scientifica e delle sue applicazioni. Lo scopo di questa tesi è stato quello di studiare il machine learning nei suoi aspetti generali e applicarlo a problemi di computer vision. La tesi ha affrontato le difficoltà del dover spiegare dal punto di vista teorico gli algoritmi alla base delle reti neurali convoluzionali e ha successivamente trattato due problemi concreti di riconoscimento immagini: il dataset MNIST (immagini di cifre scritte a mano) e un dataset che sarà chiamato ”MELANOMA dataset” (immagini di melanomi e nevi sani). Utilizzando le tecniche spiegate nella sezione teorica si sono riusciti ad ottenere risultati soddifacenti per entrambi i dataset ottenendo una precisione del 98% per il MNIST e del 76.8% per il MELANOMA dataset

Pervasive and distributed Internet of Things (IoT) devices demand ubiquitous coverage beyond No-man’s land. To satisfy plethora of IoT devices with resilient connectivity, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) will be pivotal to assist and complement terrestrial systems. In a massiveMTC scenario over NTN, characterized by sporadic uplink data reports, all the terminals within a satellite beam shall be served during the short visibility window of the flying platform, thus generating congestion due to simultaneous access attempts of IoT devices on the same radio resource. The more terminals collide, the more average-time it takes to complete an access which is due to the decreased number of successful attempts caused by Back-off commands of legacy methods. A possible countermeasure is represented by Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access scheme, which requires the knowledge of the number of superimposed NPRACH preambles. This work addresses this problem by proposing a Neural Network (NN) algorithm to cope with the uncoordinated random access performed by a prodigious number of Narrowband-IoT devices. Our proposed method classifies the number of colliding users, and for each estimates the Time of Arrival (ToA). The performance assessment, under Line of Sight (LoS) and Non-LoS conditions in sub-urban environments with two different satellite configurations, shows significant benefits of the proposed NN algorithm with respect to traditional methods for the ToA estimation.

This thesis contributes to the ArgMining 2021 shared task on Key Point Analysis. Key Point Analysis entails extracting and calculating the prevalence of a concise list of the most prominent talking points, from an input corpus. These talking points are usually referred to as key points. Key point analysis is divided into two subtasks: Key Point Matching, which involves assigning a matching score to each key point/argument pair, and Key Point Generation, which consists of the generation of key points. The task of Key Point Matching was approached using different models: a pretrained Sentence Transformers model and a tree-constrained Graph Neural Network were tested. The best model was the fine-tuned Sentence Transformers, which achieved a mean Average Precision score of 0.75, ranking 12 compared to other participating teams. The model was then used for the subtask of Key Point Generation using the extractive method in the selection of key point candidates and the model developed for the previous subtask to evaluate them.

The arterial partial pressure (P CO2) of carbon dioxide is virtually constant because of the close match between the metabolic production of this gas and its excretion via breathing. Blood gas homeostasis does not rely solely on changes in lung ventilation, but also to a considerable extent on circulatory adjustments that regulate the transport of CO2 from its sites of production to the lungs. The neural mechanisms that coordinate circulatory and ventilatory changes to achieve blood gas homeostasis are the subject of this review. Emphasis will be placed on the control of sympathetic outflow by central chemoreceptors. High levels of CO2 exert an excitatory effect on sympathetic outflow that is mediated by specialized chemoreceptors such as the neurons located in the retrotrapezoid region. In addition, high CO2 causes an aversive awareness in conscious animals, activating wake-promoting pathways such as the noradrenergic neurons. These neuronal groups, which may also be directly activated by brain acidification, have projections that contribute to the CO2-induced rise in breathing and sympathetic outflow. However, since the level of activity of the retrotrapezoid nucleus is regulated by converging inputs from wake-promoting systems, behavior-specific inputs from higher centers and by chemical drive, the main focus of the present manuscript is to review the contribution of central chemoreceptors to the control of autonomic and respiratory mechanisms.

This work clarifies the relation between network circuit (topology) and behaviour (information transmission and synchronization) in active networks, e.g. neural networks. As an application, we show how one can find network topologies that are able to transmit a large amount of information, possess a large number of communication channels, and are robust under large variations of the network coupling configuration. This theoretical approach is general and does not depend on the particular dynamic of the elements forming the network, since the network topology can be determined by finding a Laplacian matrix (the matrix that describes the connections and the coupling strengths among the elements) whose eigenvalues satisfy some special conditions. To illustrate our ideas and theoretical approaches, we use neural networks of electrically connected chaotic Hindmarsh-Rose neurons.

Power distribution automation and control are import-ant tools in the current restructured electricity markets. Unfortunately, due to its stochastic nature, distribution systems faults are hardly avoidable. This paper proposes a novel fault diagnosis scheme for power distribution systems, composed by three different processes: fault detection and classification, fault location, and fault section determination. The fault detection and classification technique is wavelet based. The fault-location technique is impedance based and uses local voltage and current fundamental phasors. The fault section determination method is artificial neural network based and uses the local current and voltage signals to estimate the faulted section. The proposed hybrid scheme was validated through Alternate Transient Program/Electromagentic Transients Program simulations and was implemented as embedded software. It is currently used as a fault diagnosis tool in a Southern Brazilian power distribution company.

In this work, the oxidation of the model pollutant phenol has been studied by means of the O(3), O(3)-UV, and O(3)-H(2)O(2) processes. Experiments were carried out in a fed-batch system to investigate the effects of initial dissolved organic carbon concentration, initial, ozone concentration in the gas phase, the presence or absence of UVC radiation, and initial hydrogen peroxide concentration. Experimental results were used in the modeling of the degradation processes by neural networks in order to simulate DOC-time profiles and evaluate the relative importance of process variables.

In many engineering applications, the time coordination of geographically separated events is of fundamental importance, as in digital telecommunications and integrated digital circuits. Mutually connected (MC) networks are very good candidates for some new types of application, such as wireless sensor networks. This paper presents a study on the behavior of MC networks of digital phase-locked loops (DPLLs). Analytical results are derived showing that, even for static networks without delays, different synchronous states may exist for the network. An upper bound for the number of such states is also presented. Numerical simulations are used to show the following results: (i) the synchronization precision in MC DPLLs networks; (ii) the existence of synchronous states for the network does not guarantee its achievement and (iii) different synchronous states may be achieved for different initial conditions. These results are important in the neural computation context. as in this case, each synchronous state may be associated to a different analog memory information. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The coordination of movement is governed by a coalition of constraints. The expression of these constraints ranges from the concrete—the restricted range of motion offered by the mechanical configuration of our muscles and joints; to the abstract—the difficulty that we experience in combining simple movements into complex rhythms. We seek to illustrate that the various constraints on coordination are complementary and inclusive, and the means by which their expression and interaction are mediated systematically by the integrative action of the central nervous system (CNS). Beyond identifying the general principles at the behavioural level that govern the mutual interplay of constraints, we attempt to demonstrate that these principles have as their foundation specific functional properties of the cortical motor systems. We propose that regions of the brain upstream of the motor cortex may play a significant role in mediating interactions between the functional representations of muscles engaged in sensorimotor coordination tasks. We also argue that activity in these ldquosupramotorrdquo regions may mediate the stabilising role of augmented sensory feedback.

Although it has long been supposed that resistance training causes adaptive changes in the CNS, the sites and nature of these adaptations have not previously been identified. In order to determine whether the neural adaptations to resistance training occur to a greater extent at cortical or subcortical sites in the CNS, we compared the effects of resistance training on the electromyographic (EMG) responses to transcranial magnetic (TMS) and electrical (TES) stimulation. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle of 16 individuals before and after 4 weeks of resistance training for the index finger abductors (n = 8), or training involving finger abduction-adduction without external resistance (n = 8). TMS was delivered at rest at intensities from 5 % below the passive threshold to the maximal output of the stimulator. TMS and TES were also delivered at the active threshold intensity while the participants exerted torques ranging from 5 to 60 % of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) torque. The average latency of MEPs elicited by TES was significantly shorter than that of TMS MEPs (TES latency = 21.5 ± 1.4 ms; TMS latency = 23.4 ± 1.4 ms; P < 0.05), which indicates that the site of activation differed between the two forms of stimulation. Training resulted in a significant increase in MVC torque for the resistance-training group, but not the control group. There were no statistically significant changes in the corticospinal properties measured at rest for either group. For the active trials involving both TMS and TES, however, the slope of the relationship between MEP size and the torque exerted was significantly lower after training for the resistance-training group (P < 0.05). Thus, for a specific level of muscle activity, the magnitude of the EMG responses to both forms of transcranial stimulation were smaller following resistance training. These results suggest that resistance training changes the functional properties of spinal cord circuitry in humans, but does not substantially affect the organisation of the motor cortex.

The reconstruction of power industries has brought fundamental changes to both power system operation and planning. This paper presents a new planning method using multi-objective optimization (MOOP) technique, as well as human knowledge, to expand the transmission network in open access schemes. The method starts with a candidate pool of feasible expansion plans. Consequent selection of the best candidates is carried out through a MOOP approach, of which multiple objectives are tackled simultaneously, aiming at integrating the market operation and planning as one unified process in context of deregulated system. Human knowledge has been applied in both stages to ensure the selection with practical engineering and management concerns. The expansion plan from MOOP is assessed by reliability criteria before it is finalized. The proposed method has been tested with the IEEE 14-bus system and relevant analyses and discussions have been presented.
