Monte Carlo method has been applied to investigate the kinetic of grafting reaction in free radical copolymerization. The simulation is quits in agreement with that of theoretical and experimental results. It proves that the Monte Carlo simulation is an effective method for investigating the grafting reaction of free radical copolymerization. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The title compound, [C12H24O6][H3PMo12O40]. 22H(2)O, was synthesized by the self-assembly of 18-crown-6 (abbreviated as C12H24O6 or 18C6) and H3PMo12O40 in the mixed solvent of CH3OH and CH3CN, and was characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and Xray diffraction for the first time. Crystal data: Triclinic, P (1) over bar, a = 13.428(3) Angstrom, b = 13.557(3)A, c = 14.642(3) Angstrom, a = 105.39(3)degrees, beta = 90.06(3)degrees, gamma = 119.56(5)degrees, V = 2207.5(8) Angstrom(3), Z = 1, R1 = 0.0719, wR2 = 0.1990. It has a disordered alpha-Keggin PMo12O403- anion, which contains the strong alternating short (mean 1.844 Angstrom) and long (mean 1.958 Angstrom) Mo-O-Mo bonds. In the unit cell, crown ethers and molybdophosphates are alternatively arranged in good order along c-axis. An oxonium ion is located at the center of a crown ether molecule., Oxonium ion interacts with 18C6 by the means of hydrogen bonds (mean 2.7771 Angstrom), which are electrostatic or resonant. Novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing a lateral methoxy group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and methoxyhydroquinone with 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene in a sulfolane solvent in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques, e.g. differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy and temperature-dependent FTIR. Thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour was observed in the copolymers containing 30-80 mol-% mexthoxyhydroquinone. Both melting (T-m) and isotropization (T-i) transitions appeared in the DSC curves. The polarized light microscopy study of the liquid crystalline copolymers suggested their ordered smectic structures. As expected, the copolymers had lower melting transitions than the biphenol-based homopoly(aryl ether ketone)s because of the copolymerization effect of the crystal-disrupting monomer methoxyhydroquinone.

The graft copolymerization of butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl alcohol) with eerie ammonium nitrate as redox initiator in a aqueous medium has been investigated. The formation of graft copolymer was confirmed by means of IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The percentage of mononer conversion and percentage of grafting varied with concentrations of initiator, nitric acid, monomer, macromolecular backbone (X-n = 1750, M = 80 000), reaction temperature and reaction time. Some inorganic salts and organic solvents have a great influence upon grafting. The reaction mechanism has been explored, and rate equations for the reaction are established. The thermooxidative degradtion of ethylene oxide and tetra-hydrofuran (EO-THF) co-polyether has been studied by electron spin resonance (ESR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The initial degradation site was found to be at the a-carbon of the ether bond. Two free radicals which derived from dehydrogenation and oxygen addition were successfully detected by spin-trapping technique which used alpha -phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone(PBN) as spin trap. Both FT-IR and NMR have been used to follow structural changes of the copolyether during degradation. Nearly 20 product fragments including formate, carbonate, methyl, alcohol, methylene-dioxy, hydroperoxide and semiformal have been characterized by D-1 and D-2 NMR. The thermooxidtion of co-polyether preferred to occur on the THF units especially at the alternating linkage of EO and THF. Antioxidant (BHT) not only retarded the thermooxidation but also modified the degradation products with less ester and methylene-dioxy groups hut more hydroxyl and methyl groups.

The binary and ternary rare-earth terbium(m) complexes were introduced into the styrene/alpha -methylacrylic acid copolymerization system, and some optical resins that possess a high transparency in visible light region were obtained. The study of the optical property showed that they have good luminescent properties such as a high luminous intensity and a long luminous lifetime, In addition, we investigated the relationship among the transparency, the luminescent property of the copolymer, and the content of the components in the polymeric system. The results indicated that the optical resins can provide a relatively stable environment for composite rare earth complexes, which is good to exhibit the luminescent properties of rare earth complexes. At the same time, the rare earth complexes can offer the transparent resin a novel function.

The chain structure, spherulite morphology, and theological property of LL-DPE-g-AA were studied by using electronspray mass spectroscopy, C-13-NMR, and rheometer. Experimental evidence proved that AA monomers grafted onto the LLDPE backbone formed multiunit AA branch chains. It was found that AA branch chains could hinder movement of the LLDPE main chain during crystallization. Spherulites of LLDPE became more anomalous because of the presence of AA branch chains. Rheological behavior showed that AA branch chains could act as an inner plasticizer at the temperature range of 170-200 degreesC, which made LLDPE-g-AA easy to further process. The assembly of alternating DNA and positively charged poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayer films by electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption has been studied. Real time surface plasmon resonance (BIAcore) technique was used to characterize and monitor the formation of multilayer films in solution in real time continuously. The results indicate that the uniform multilayer can be obtained on the poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) coated substrate surface. The kinetics of the adsorption of DNA on PDDA surface was also studied by real-time BIAcore technique, and the observed rate constant was calculated using a Langmuir model (k(obs) = (1.28 +/- 0.08) x 10(-2) s(-1)).

A series of high sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)s were prepared by copolymerization of sodium 5,5 ' -carbonylbis (2-fluorobenzenesulfonate)(2),4,4 ' -difluorobenzophenone (1) and bisphenol A(3) in the presence of potassium carbonate in dimethylsulfoxide. The copolymers were characterized by IR and DSC, The influence of degree of sulfonation on the properties of copolymers, such as component, thermal stability, solubility and filming ability, was studied.

Grafting of acrylic acid and glycidyl methacrylate onto low density polyethylene (LDPE) was performed by using a corotating twin-screw extruder. The effects of residence time and concentration of initiator and monomers on degree of grafting and gel content of grafting LDPE were studied systematically. Paraffin, styrene, p-benzoquinone, triphenyl phosphite, tetrachloromethane, and oleic acid were added to try to decrease the extent of crosslinking of LDPE. 4-hydroxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (4-hydroxyl-TEMPO) and dipentamethylenethiuram tetrasulfide were also tried to inhibit crosslinking reaction of LDPE during its extruding grafting process. It was found that p-benzoquinone, triphenyl phosphite and tetrachloromethane were good inhibitors for crosslinking of LDPE. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Multilayers of Y-type bilayers of pure and mixed erbium palmitate(EP), nonadecanate(Er) and behenate(EB) on CaF2 substrates were prepared by conventional Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. II is demonstrated that two systems composed of alternating bilayer of different fatty acid salts are unidimensional superlattices. These LB films were characterized by means of x-ray photoelectronic Spectrometry (XPS), FTIR and x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements.

In preparing copolymer of the same composition by batch process in two - component copolymerization it is necessary to keep the monomer ratio constant by replenishing the fraction of the more reactive monomer. In this paper a calculation method for monomer feeding is derived, which iscapable of controlling the composition of cooligomer during the course of reaction. Some cooligomers of acrylonitrile and butadiene with relatively the same compositions have been prepared using the replenishing method. The method would be useful for other two - component copolymerization ion process.

A new approach for the crosslinking of polyimides via the lactamization of spirodilactone unit in polyimide backbone was studied by two means: model reaction and the comparison of the properties of the polyimide precursors to those of the crosslinking polymers. Polyimides 4 and 5 were soluble in N,N'dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), N'-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), and other common organic solvents, whereas their corresponding crosslinking polymers were insoluble in these solvents. The glass transition temperatures for polyimide 5 and its crosslinking polymer were 262 degrees C and 291 degrees C, whereas those for polyimide 4 and its crosslinking polymer were 265 degrees C and 360 degrees C. The weight-loss rate of the crosslinling polymers was apparently slower than that of the precursors when the temperature was >400 degrees C. The 10% weight-loss temperature for the polyimides 4 and 5 was <500 degrees C, whereas that for the crosslinking polymers was close to or above 600 degrees C. The results indicate that this type of crosslinking polymer has good thermal properties. The temperature for the formation of lactam was above 180 degrees C. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Poly(phenylenesulfidephenylenamine)(PPSA) an alternating copolymer and the hybrid structure of poly(phenylene sulfide)(PPS) and polyaniline(PAn), was synthesized by self-polycondensation of methyl-(4-anilino-phenyl) sulfide with antimony pentachloride and by the acid-induced self-polycondensation of methyl-(4-anilino-phenyl) sulfoxide.
