Carbonate precipitates recovered from 2,000 m water depth at the Dolgovskoy Mound (Shatsky Ridge, north eastern Black Sea) were studied using mineralogical, geochemical and lipid biomarker analyses. The carbonates differ in shape from simple pavements to cavernous structures with thick microbial mats attached to their lower side and within cavities. Low d13C values measured on carbonates (-41 to -32 per mill V-PDB) and extracted lipid biomarkers indicate that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) played a crucial role in precipitating these carbonates. The internal structure of the carbonates is dominated by finely laminated coccolith ooze and homogeneous clay layers, both cemented by micritic high-magnesium calcite (HMC), and pure, botryoidal, yellowish low-magnesium calcite (LMC) grown in direct contact to microbial mats. d18O measurements suggest that the authigenic HMC precipitated in equilibrium with the Black Sea bottom water while the yellowish LMC rims have been growing in slightly 18O-depleted interstitial water. Although precipitated under significantly different environmental conditions, especially with respect to methane availability, all analysed carbonate samples show lipid patterns that are typical for ANME-1 dominated AOM consortia, in the case of the HMC samples with significant contributions of allochthonous components of marine and terrestrial origin, reflecting the hemipelagic nature of the primary sediment.

High-resolution percent Corg and delta18Oforam records obtained from Panama Basin core Atlantis II 54-25PC and additional data from nearby core P7 show that enhanced burial of organic carbon has characterized every major glacial period for the last 500 kyr in that area. Both Corg concentration and mass accumulation rate profiles exhibit a sawtooth pattern with maxima occurring typically in the later stages of glacial periods. Comparison with dust records suggests that the carbon accumulation rate profile reflects both the upwelling history and a variable rate of iron input during the late Quaternary. The sawtooth character may derive from increased wind velocities and rates of upwelling during glacials which are indirectly related to ice volume (Sarnthein et al., 1988). The rapid decline in export production at the end of glacials in the equatorial Pacific may be attributed to the retreat of ice sheets (thus reduced wind velocities and upwelling) coupled with a coincident decline in atmospheric dust load and/or delivery rate. The Corg accumulation rate profiles do not correlate well with atmospheric CO2 records. For example, atmospheric CO2 was already at a minimum 40 kyr ago when production in the Panama Basin began increasing dramatically, commensurate with an increase in global dust levels. Using the relationship between the degree of photosynthetic fractionation and the concentration of free CO2 in the surface ocean postulated by Popp et al. (1989), delta13Corg measurements made on core P7 show that Panama Basin surface waters have been supplying CO2 to the atmosphere continually for at least the last 50 kyr. There is no evidence for a flux of CO2 into the surface ocean in this area at any time during this period despite the higher production. If the Panama Basin cores are representative of the eastern and central equatorial Pacific, then these observations weaken the influence on CO2 drawdown postulated for increased glacial productivity at low latitudes.

Conventional K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar age data on altered basalts from DSDP Hole 192A on Meiji Guyot, Emperor Seamount chain, indicate a minimum age for the volcano of 61.9 ± 5.0 m.y. The K-Ar data are consistent with the early Maestrichtian date of the overlying sediments, but do not provide either a positive or negative test of the hypothesis that Meiji is older than Emperor volcanoes to the south. The most prominent alteration affecting the age measurements is potassium metasomatism, particularly of feldspar phenocrysts. The K-Ar apparent ages of feldspar separates from the Meiji basalts show that more than half of the potassium metasomatism occurred within the last 25 m.y. or so, and that if the potassium replacement rate has been constant, then the alteration of the Meiji basalts did not begin for 10 to 20 m.y. after the volcano formed.

A Monte Carlo based radiative transfer model has been developed for calculating the availability of solar radiation within the top 100 m of the ocean. The model is optimized for simulations of spatial high resolution downwelling irradiance Ed fluctuations that arise from the lensing effect of waves at the water surface. In a first step the accuracy of simulation results has been verified by measurements of the oceanic underwater light field and through intercomparison with an established radiative transfer model. Secondly the potential depth-impact of nonlinear shaped single waves, from capillary to swell waves, is assessed by considering the most favorable conditions for light focusing, i.e. monochromatic light at 490 nm, very clear oceanic water with a low chlorophyll a content of 0.1 mg/m**3 and high sun elevation. Finally light fields below irregular wave profiles accounting for realistic sea states were simulated. Our simulation results suggest that under open ocean conditions light flashes with 50% irradiance enhancements can appear down to 35 m depth, and light variability in the range of ±10% compared to the mean Ed is still possible in 100 m depth.
