Tialite, beta-Al2TiO5, a low expansion material, has been synthesised by the combustion of corresponding metal nitrates and carbohydrazide (CH) or urea redox mixtures at 500-degrees-C. As prepared powders contained tialite, rutile, and corundum in the mole ratios of 50:25:25 (CH) and 20:40:40 (urea). The combustion derived powders, when calcined 30 min at 1300-degrees-C, gave single phase beta-tialite having a surface area of 20-25 m2 g-1 and a particle size of 0.79-1.03 mum.

An amorphous phase has been synthesized by mechanical alloying in a planetary mill over a nickel content range of 1070 at.% in the Ti---Ni system and a copper content range of 1050 at.% in the Ti---Cu system. In the case of ternary Ti---Ni---Cu alloys the glass-forming composition range has been found to be given by x = 1020 for Ti60Ni40 ? xCux, x = 10 30 for Ti50Ni50 ? xCux and x = 10 40 for Ti40Ni60 ? xCux alloys. The difficulty in the amorphization of copper-rich compositions is explained in the light of enthalpy composition diagrams calculated for the ternary solid solution and the amorphous phase.

The higher substrate and chiral auxiliary concentration is a pre-requisite to obtain efficient separation of H-1 NMR signals of enantiomers. The higher concentration of chiral lanthanide shift reagents provides broadened spectral lines resulting in a severe loss of resolution between the enantiomer resonances. In order to circumvent such difficulties, herein we present the application and the usefulness of a selective F-1 decoupled correlation (COSY) experiment which yields proton decoupled proton spectra in the indirect dimension. The potentiality of the experiment is demonstrated on several chiral compounds possessing different functional groups, employing either a lanthanide shift reagent or a solvating reagent as chiral auxiliaries. The forestry sector provides a number of climate change mitigation options. Apart from this ecological benefit, it has significant social and economic relevance. Implementation of forestry options requires large investments and sustained long-term planning. Thus there is a need for a detailed analysis of forestry options to understand their implications on stock and flow of carbon, required investments, value of forest wealth, contribution to GNP and livelihood, demand management, employment and foreign trade. There is a need to evaluate the additional spending on forestry by analysing the environmental (particularly carbon abatement), social and economic benefits. The biomass needs for India are expected to increase by two to three times by 2020. Depending upon the forest types, ownership patterns and land use patterns, feasible forestry options are identified. It is found among many supply options to be feasible to meet the 'demand based needs' with a mix of management options, species choices and organisational set up. A comparative static framework is used to analyze the macro-economic impacts. Forestry accounts for 1.84% of GNP in India. It is characterized by significant forward industrial linkages and least backward linkage. Forestry generates about 36 million person years of employment annually. India imports Rs. 15 billion worth of forest based materials annually. Implementation of the demand based forestry options can lead to a number of ecological, economic and institutional changes. The notable ones are: enhancement of C stock from 9578 to 17 094 Mt and a net annual C-sequestration from 73 to 149 Mt after accounting for all emissions; a trebling of the output of forestry sector from Rs. 49 billion to Rs. 146 billion annually; an increase in GDP contribution of forestry from Rs. 32 billion to Rs. 105 billion over a period of 35 years; an increase in annual employment level by 23 million person years, emergence of forestry as a net contributor of foreign exchange through trading of forestry products; and an increase in economic value of forest capital stock by Rs. 7260 billion with a cost benefit analysis showing forestry as a profitable option. Implementation of forestry options calls for an understanding of current forest policies and barriers which are analyzed and a number of policy options are suggested. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

We consider the effect of subdividing the potential barrier along the reaction coordinate on Kramer's escape rate for a model potential, Using the known supersymmetric potential approach, we show the existence of an optimal number of subdivisions that maximizes the rate, We cast the problem as a mean first passage time problem of a biased random walker and obtain equivalent results, We briefly summarize the results of our investigation on the increase in the escape rate by placing a blow-torch in the unstable part of one of the potential wells. Experiments were conducted to measure the ac breakdown strength of 0.5 mm, thick epoxy alumina nanocomposites with different filler concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 5wt%. The experiments were performed as per the ASTM D 149 standard. It was observed that the ac breakdown strength was marginally lower up to 1wt% filler concentration and then increased at 5wt% filler concentration as compared to the unfilled epoxy. The Weibull shape parameter (β) increased with the addition of nanoparticles to epoxy. The dependence of thickness on the ac breakdown strength was also analyzed by conducting experiments on 1mm and 3mm thick unfilled epoxy and epoxy alumina nanocomposites of 1wt% and 5wt% filler concentrations. The DSC analysis was done to understand the material properties at the filler resin interface in order to study the effect of the filler concentration and thereby the influence of the interface on the ac breakdown strength of epoxy nanocomposites.

The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of strontium-doped neodymium ferrite (Nd1-xSrxFeO3-delta where 0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.4) were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction. The orthorhombic distortion decreases with increasing Sr substitution. The pseudocubic lattice parameter shows a minimum at x=0.3. The thermal expansion curves for x=0.2-0.4 displayed rapid increase in slope at higher temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with Sr content and temperature. The calculated activation energies for electrical conduction decreased with increasing x. The electrical conductivity can be described by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B site and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice. The results indicate two defect domains: for low values of x, the predominant defect is Fe4+ ions, whereas for higher values of x, oxygen vacancies dominate. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Neural network models of associative memory exhibit a large number of spurious attractors of the network dynamics which are not correlated with any memory state. These spurious attractors, analogous to "glassy" local minima of the energy or free energy of a system of particles, degrade the performance of the network by trapping trajectories starting from states that are not close to one of the memory states. Different methods for reducing the adverse effects of spurious attractors are examined with emphasis on the role of synaptic asymmetry. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline (PANI) has been studied as an active material for electrochemical capacitors. Polymerization of aniline to PANI has been carried out potentiodynamically on a stainless steel (SS) substrate, instead of Pt-based substrates generally employed for this application. The PANI/SS electrodes have been evaluated by assembling symmetrical capacitors in NaClO(4) + HClO(4) mixed electrolyte and subjecting them to galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles between 0 and 0.75 V. The effect of substrate has been assessed by comparing the capacitance of PANI/SS and PANI/Pt electrodes. The capacitance of PANI/SS electrode is higher than that of PANI/Pt electrode by several times. The effect of sweep rate of potentiodynamic deposition of PANI/SS on capacitance has been investigated. At a power density of 0.5 kW kg(-1), a capacitance value of 815 F g(-1) of PANI is obtained for the deposition sweep rate of 200 mV s(-1). Increase in thickness of PANI on the SS substrate results in an increase in capacitance of PANI. This value of capacitance is the highest ever reported for any electrochemical capacitor material. Thus, in addition to a favorable economic aspect involved in using SS instead of Pt or Pt-based substrate, the advantage of higher capacitance of PANI has also been achieved. The effect of the test gas on the flow field around a 120degrees apex angle blunt cone has been investigated in a shock tunnel at a nominal Mach number of 5.75. The shock standoff distance around the blunt cone was measured by an electrical discharge technique using both carbon dioxide and air as test gases. The forebody laminar convective heat transfer to the blunt cone was measured with platinum thin-film sensors in both air and carbon dioxide environments. An increase of 10 to 15% in the measured heat transfer values was observed with carbon dioxide as the test gas in comparison to air. The measured thickness of the shock layer along the stagnation streamline was 3.57 +/- 0.17 mm in air and 3.29 +/- 0.26 mm in carbon dioxide. The computed thickness of the shock layer for air and carbon dioxide were 3.98 mm and 3.02 mm, respectively. The observed increase in the measured heat transfer rates in carbon dioxide compared to air was due to the higher density ratio across the bow shock wave and the reduced shock layer thickness.

To resolve many flow features accurately, like accurate capture of suction peak in subsonic flows and crisp shocks in flows with discontinuities, to minimise the loss in stagnation pressure in isentropic flows or even flow separation in viscous flows require an accurate and low dissipative numerical scheme. The first order kinetic flux vector splitting (KFVS) method has been found to be very robust but suffers from the problem of having much more numerical diffusion than required, resulting in inaccurate computation of the above flow features. However, numerical dissipation can be reduced by refining the grid or by using higher order kinetic schemes. In flows with strong shock waves, the higher order schemes require limiters, which reduce the local order of accuracy to first order, resulting in degradation of flow features in many cases. Further, these schemes require more points in the stencil and hence consume more computational time and memory. In this paper, we present a low dissipative modified KFVS (m-KFVS) method which leads to improved splitting of inviscid fluxes. The m-KFVS method captures the above flow features more accurately compared to first order KFVS and the results are comparable to second order accurate KFVS method, by still using the first order stencil. The I-V characteristics of bulk As40Te60-xSex and As35Te65-xSex glasses have been studied with a current sweep of 0-18 mA-0, over a wide range of compositions (4 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 22). All the glasses studied showed a threshold electrical switching behaviour. The number of switching cycles withstood by the samples has been found to depend on the ON-state current. It is seen that the switching voltages increase with increase in selenium content. Further, the switching voltages are found to be almost independent of the thickness of the sample (d), in the range 0.18-0.3 mm. Also, the switching voltages and the number of switching cycles withstood by the samples are found to decrease with temperature.
