Peer review procedures and citation statistics are important yet often neglected components of the scientific publication process. Here I discuss fundamental consequences of such quality measures for the scientific community and propose three remedial actions: (1) use of a ''Combined Impact Estimate'' as a measure of citation statistics, (2) adoption of an open reviewing policy and (3) acceleration of the publication process in order to raise the reputation of the entire discipline (in our case: behavioural science). Authors, reviewers and editors are invited to contribute to the improvement of publication practice.

BACKGROUND : Comparisons between younger and older stroke patients including comorbidities are limited. METHODS : Prospective data of consecutive patients with first ever acute ischemic stroke were compared between younger (= 45 years) and older patients (> 45 years). RESULTS : Among 1004 patients, 137 (14 %) were = 45 years. Younger patients were more commonly female (57 % versus 34 %; p < 0.0001), had a lower frequency of diabetes (1 % versus 15 %; p < 0.0001), hypercholesterolemia (26 % versus 56 %; p < 0.0001), hypertension (19 % versus 65 %; p < 0.0001), coronary heart disease (14 % versus 40 %; p < 0.0001), and a lower mean Charlson co-morbidity index (CCI), (0.18 versus 0.84; p < 0.0001). Tobacco use was more prevalent in the young (39 % versus 26 %; P < 0.0001). Large artery disease (2 % versus 21 %; p < 0.0001), small artery disease (3 % versus 12 %; p = 0.0019) and atrial fibrillation (1 % versus 17 %; p = 0.001) were less common in young patients, while other etiologies (31 % versus 9 %; p < 0.0001), patent foramen ovale or atrial septal defect (44 % versus 26 %; p < 0.0001), and cervical artery dissection (26 % versus 7 %; p < 0.0001) were more frequent. A favorable outcome (mRS 0 or 1) was more common (57.4 % versus 46.9 %; p = 0.023), and mortality (5.1 % versus 12 %; p = 0.009) was lower in the young. After regression analysis, there was no independent association between age and outcome (p = 0.206) or mortality (p = 0.073). Baseline NIHSS score (p < 0.0001), diabetes (p = 0.041), and CCI (p = 0.002) independently predicted an unfavorable outcome. CONCLUSIONS : Younger patients were more likely to be female, had different risk factors and etiologies and fewer co-morbidities. There was no independent association between age and clinical outcome or mortality.

Acute coronary syndromes represent a broad spectrum of ischemic myocardial events including unstable angina, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction and acute ST elevation myocardial infarction, which are associated with high morbidity and mortality. They constitute the most frequent cause of hospital admission related to cardiac disease. Early diagnosis and risk stratification are essential for initiation of optimal medical and invasive management. Therapeutic measures comprise aggressive antiplatelet, antithrombotic, and anti-ischemic agents. In addition, patients with high-risk features, notably positive troponin, ST segment changes and diabetes, benefit from an early invasive as compared to a conservative strategy. Importantly, lifestyle interventions, modification of the risk factor profile, and long-term medical treatment are of pivotal importance in reducing the long-term risk of recurrence.

With energy demands and costs growing every day, the need for improving energy efficiency in electrical devices has become very important. Research into various methods of improving efficiency for all electrical components will be a key to meet future energy needs. This report documents the design, construction, and testing of a research quality electric machine dynamometer and test bed. This test cell system can be used for research in several areas including: electric drives systems, electric vehicle propulsion systems, power electronic converters, load/source element in an AC Microgrid, as well as many others. The test cell design criteria, and decisions, will be discussed in reference to user functionality and flexibility. The individual power components will be discussed in detail to how they relate to the project, highlighting any feature used in operation of the test cell. A project timeline will be discussed, clearly stating the work done by the different individuals involved in the project. In addition, the system will be parameterized and benchmark data will be used to provide the functional operation of the system. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) vaccine efficacy may crucially depend on immunogen length and coverage of viral sequence diversity. However, covering a considerable proportion of the circulating viral sequence variants would likely require long immunogens, which for the conserved portions of the viral genome, would contain unnecessarily redundant sequence information. In this study, we present the design and in vitro performance analysis of a novel "epitome" approach that compresses frequent immune targets of the cellular immune response against HCV into a shorter immunogen sequence. Compression of immunological information is achieved by partial overlapping shared sequence motifs between individual epitopes. At the same time, sequence diversity coverage is provided by taking advantage of emerging cross-reactivity patterns among epitope variants so that epitope variants associated with the broadest variant cross-recognition are preferentially included. The processing and presentation analysis of specific epitopes included in such a compressed, in vitro-expressed HCV epitome indicated effective processing of a majority of tested epitopes, although re-presentation of some epitopes may require refined sequence design. Together, the present study establishes the epitome approach as a potential powerful tool for vaccine immunogen design, especially suitable for the induction of cellular immune responses against highly variable pathogens.

The herbaceous layer is a dynamic layer in a forest ecosystem which often contains the highest species richness in northern temperate forests. Few long-term studies exist in northern hardwood forests with consistent management practices to observe herbaceous species dynamics. The Ford Forest (Michigan Technological University) reached its 50th year of management during the winter of 2008-2009. Herbaceous species were sampled during the summers pre- and post-harvest. Distinct herbaceous communities developed in the 13-cm diameter-limit treatment and the uncut control. After the harvest, the diameter-limit treatments had herbaceous communities more similar to the 13-cm diameter-limit treatment than the uncut control; the herbaceous layer contained more exotic and early successional species. Fifty years of continuous management changed the herbaceous community especially in the diameter-limit treatments. Sites used in the development of habitat classification systems based on the presence and absence of certain herbaceous species can also be used to monitor vegetation change over time. The Guide to Forest Communities and Habitat Types of Michigan was developed to aid forest managers in understanding the potential productivity of a stand, and often aid in the development of ecologically-based forest management practices. Subsets of plots used to create the Western Upper Peninsula Guide were resampled after 10 years. During the resampling, both spring and summer vegetation were sampled and earthworm populations were estimated through liquid extraction. Spring sampling observed important spring ephemerals missed during summer sampling. More exotic species were present during the summer 2010 sampling than the summer 2000 sampling. Invasive European earthworms were also observed at all sample locations in all habitat types; earthworm densities increased with increasing habitat richness. To ensure the accuracy of the guide book, plots should be monitored to see how herbaceous communities are changing. These plots also offer unique opportunities to monitor for invasive species and the effects of a changing climate.

Urinary diversion after cystectomy have evolved from simple diversion and protection of the upper tracts to functional and anatomic restoration as close as possible to the natural preoperative state. Over the past 15 years, orthotopic reconstruction has evolved from "experimental surgery" to the "preferred method of urinary diversion" in both sexes. Urologist that perform this technique should have an appropriate experience with pelvic surgery and be able to perform a nerve sparing radical cystectomy. Nevertheless, the postoperative management of these patients is more important than the surgical construction if good longterm results are to be achieved. For this reason, a great knowledge about the neobladder's physiology, postoperative complications and their treatment are needed. We review the most important aspects in the postoperative management of patients with ileal neobladder. We also resume the long term outcomes concerning to continence, sexual function, renal impairment, oncologic safety and quality of life.

A green fluorescent 12-aza-epothilone (azathilone) derivative has been prepared through the attachment of the 4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD) fluorophore to the 12-nitrogen atom of the azamacrolide core structure. While less potent than natural epothilones or different N12-acylated azathilone derivatives, NBD-azathilone (3) promotes tubulin assembly, inhibits cancer cell proliferation in vitro and arrests the cell cycle at the G2/M transition. Most significantly, the binding of 3 to cellular microtubules (MTs) could be directly visualized by confocal fluorescence microscopy. Based on competition binding experiments with laulimalide-stabilized MTs in vitro, the N12-Boc substituted azathilone 1, Epo A, and NBD-azathilone (3) all interact with the same tubulin-binding site. Computational studies provided a structural model of the complexes between beta-tubulin and 1 or 3, respectively, in which the NBD moiety of 3 or the BOC moiety of 1 directly and specifically contribute to MT binding. Collectively, these data demonstrate that the cellular effects of 3 and, by inference, also of other azathilones are the result of their interactions with the cellular MT network.

BACKGROUND: When anticoagulation is contraindicated or ineffective, optional vena cava filters can be used to prevent pulmonary embolism. These devices can be removed within a defined period of time or can remain in the vena cava permanently. METHODS: The status of optional vena cava filters was studied by a review of the relevant literature found in a selective Medline search from 2000 to 2008, including a Cochrane review and published guidelines. RESULTS: Optional vena cava filter can be removed up to 20 weeks or even longer after insertion (depending on the filter model) in a small interventional radiological procedure if therapeutic anticoagulation has been achieved or the patient is no longer at risk for venous thromboembolism. Current studies show comparable results for optional filters and permanent filters, but there have not yet been any prospective studies comparing the two filter types. CONCLUSIONS: Optional vena cava filters are an important addition to the management of venous thromboembolic disease. As only limited data are available to date, the use of optional filters should be considered on an individual case basis.
