Smallholder farmers in Africa practice traditional cropping techniques such as intercropping. Intercropping is thought to offer higher productivity and resource milisation than sole cropping. In this study, risk associated with maize-bean intercropping was evaluated by quantifying long-term yield in both intercropping and sole cropping in a semi-arid region of South Africa (Bloemfontein, Free State) with reference to rainfall variability. The crop simulation model was run with different cultural practices (planting date and plant density) for 52 summer crop growing seasons (1950/1951-2001/2002). Eighty-one scenarios, consisted of three levels of initial soil water, planting date, maize population, and bean population, were simulated. From the simulation outputs, the total land equivalent ratio (LER) was greater than one. The intercrop (equivalent to sole maize) had greater energy value (EV) than sole beans, and the intercrop (equivalent to sole beans) had greater monetary value (MV) than sole maize. From these results, it can be concluded that maize-bean intercropping is advantageous for this semi-arid region. Soil water at planting was the most important factor of all scenario factors, followed by planting date. Irrigation application at planting, November/December planting and high plant density of maize for EV and beans for MV can be one of the most effective cultural practices in the study region. With regard to rainfall variability, seasonal (October-April) rainfall positively affected EV and MV, but not LER. There was more intercrop production in La Nina years than in El Nino years. Thus, better cultural practices may be selected to maximize maize-bean intercrop yields for specific seasons in the semi-arid region based on the global seasonal outlook. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Phosphorus-availability tests typically provide an indication of quantity of P available (Colwell bicarbonate-extractable P), or of the intensity of supply (0.01 M CaCl2-extractable P). The soil's capacity to buffer P is more difficult to assess, and is generally estimated using a P-adsorption curve. The diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) approach may provide a simpler means of assessing a soil's ability to maintain soil solution P. Optimal extraction conditions were found to be 24 h exposure of DGT samplers to saturated soil. The DGT approach was evaluated on a range of 24 soils, some of which had high Colwell- (>100 mu g g(-1)) and Bray 1- (>30 mu g g(-1)) extractable P content, but showed a tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) yield response to the addition of P fertilizer. The DGT approach provided an excellent separation of soils on which tomato showed a yield response, from those where fertilizer P did not increase dry-matter yield. Phosphorus accumulation was strongly correlated with soil solution P concentration and anion exchange resin-extractable P, but showed poor correlation with Colwell- or Bray 1-extractable P. The DGT P accumulation rate of 3.62 x 10(-7) to 4.79 x 10(-5) mol s(-1) m(-3) for the soils tested was comparable to the uptake rate of roots of tomato plants that were adequately supplied with P (2.25 x 10(-5) mol s(-1) m(-3)).

Weather damage reduces the value of commercial mungbean, but hard-seededness can reduce the level of damage. However, attempts to breed large- and hard-seeded mungbean varieties have been unsuccessful. To understand the relationship between seed weight and hard-seededness, these traits were investigated using a quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping approach with a recombinant inbred population derived from a cross between a completely soft-seeded variety and a completely hard-seeded genotype. The two parental genotypes also had a sixfold difference in seed weight. QTL analyses revealed four loci for hard-seededness and I I loci for seed weight. Two of the hardseededness loci co-localized with seed weight QTL. When seed weight was used as a covariate in the analysis of hard-seededness from the field data, two of the four hard-seeded QTL remained significant with the effect at one of these remaining unchanged. These results explain why retaining hard-seededness in large seeded mungbean lines has been unsuccessful. The existence of a persistent locus, however, indicated that breeding large and persistently hard-seeded varieties of mungbean may be possible.

Substantial amounts of nitrogen (N) fertiliser are necessary for commercial sugarcane production because of the large biomass produced by sugarcane crops. Since this fertiliser is a substantial input cost and has implications if N is lost to the environment, there are pressing needs to optimise the supply of N to the crops' requirements. The complexity of the N cycle and the strong influence of climate, through its moderation of N transformation processes in the soil and its impact on N uptake by crops, make simulation-based approaches to this N management problem attractive. In this paper we describe the processes to be captured in modelling soil and plant N dynamics in sugarcane systems, and review the capability for modelling these processes. We then illustrate insights gained into improved management of N through simulation-based studies for the issues of crop residue management, irrigation management and greenhouse gas emissions. We conclude by identifying processes not currently represented in the models used for simulating N cycling in sugarcane production systems, and illustrate ways in which these can be partially overcome in the short term. Symptoms associated with pistachio dieback in Australia include decline (little or no current season growth), xylem staining in shoots two or more years old, trunk mu and limb lesions (often covered by black, superficial fungal growth), excessive exudation of resin, dieback and death of the tree. Bacteria belonging to the genus Xanthomonas have been suggested as the causal agent. To confirm the constant association between these bacteria and the disease syndrome, the absence of other pathogens and the identity of the pathogen, we performed a series of isolations and pathogenicity tests. The only microorganism consistently isolated from diseased tissue was a bacterium that produced yellow, mucoid colonies and displayed morphological and cultural characteristics typical of the genus Xanthomonas. Database comparisons of the fatty acid and whole-cell protein profiles of five representative pistachio isolates indicated that they all belonged to X. translucens, but it was not possible to allocate the isolates to pathovar. Pathogenicity tests on cereals and grasses supported this identification. However, Koch's postulates have been only partially fulfilled because not all symptoms associated with pistachio dieback were reproduced on inoculated two-year-old pistachio trees. While discolouration was observed, dieback, excessive resinous exudate and trunk and limb lesions were not produced; expression of these symptoms may be delayed, and long-term monitoring of a small number of inoculated trees is in progress.

A supersweet sweet corn hybrid, Pacific H5, was grown under field conditions in South-East Queensland to study the effects of harvest time and drying conditions on seed quality. Cobs were harvested at different times to obtain seed with two moisture percentage ranges (20-30% and 40-50%) and dried to 12% moisture under different combinations of drying temperatures (30 degrees C, 40 degrees C and 50 degrees C) and air velocities (1.25 m/s, 2.75 m/s and 4.30 m/s). Dried seed was stored at 30 degrees C with bimonthly monitoring of seed quality for 12 months. For standard as well as cold test germinations, statistical analysis yielded significant main effects for temperature, air velocity and harvest moisture content and significant interactions for drying temperature by harvest moisture and drying temperature by air velocity. Germination at the beginning of storage was unaffected by drying temperatures up to 40 degrees C regardless of harvest moisture but was lower at 50 degrees C for higher moisture. However, germination at the end of the storage period of 12 months was greatest for seed harvested at higher moisture and dried at temperatures up to 40 degrees C. Germination was not affected by air velocity for drying temperatures up to 40 degrees C but at 50 degrees C it generally decreased with increase in air velocity. To slow down seed deterioration during storage, it is recommended that sweet corn seed should be harvested at a higher moisture range (40-50%) and dried at 40 degrees C and 4.30 m/s air velocity. The drying temperature can be raised to 50 degrees C for seed harvested at a low moisture range (20-30%) provided the air velocity is kept low (1.25 m/s).

Emergence and persistence characteristics of Phalaris paradoxa seeds in no- and minimum-till situations and at different burial depths were studied in a sub-tropical environment. Three experiments were carried out using naturally shed seeds. In the first experiment, seedlings emerged from May through to September each year, although the majority of seedlings emerged in July. In the second experiment with greater seed density, cultivation in March of each year stimulated seedling emergence, altered the periodicity of emergence and accelerated the decline of seeds in the seedbank compared with plots that received no cultivation. The majority of seedlings in the cultivated plots emerged in May whereas the majority of seedlings in the undisturbed plots emerged in July. Emergence accounted for only 4-19% of the seedbank in both experiments over 2 years. Seed persistence was short in both field experiments, with less than 1% remaining 2 years after seed shed. In the third experiment, burial depth and soil disturbance significantly influenced seedling emergence and persistence of seed. Seedlings emerged most from seed mixed in the top 10 cm when subjected to annual soil disturbance, and from seed buried at 2.5 and 5.0 cm depths in undisturbed soil. Emergence was least from seed on the soil surface, and buried at 10 and 15 cm depths in undisturbed soil. Seeds persisted longest when shed onto the soil surface and persisted least when the soil was tilled. These results suggest that strategic cultivation may be a useful management tool, as it will alter the periodicity of emergence allowing use of more effective control options and will deplete the soil seedbank more rapidly.

Previous investigations with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on avocado (Persea americana Mill.) fruit have focussed mainly on improving storage life by reducing the severity of disorders causing discolouration of the flesh. Development of 1-MCP and ethylene treatments, which also help control the time to reach the eating ripe stage, may confer additional practical benefits. In this context, the current study investigated the potential of 1-MCP to accurately manipulate ripening of non-stored 'Hass' avocado fruit by treatment before or after ethylene and at different times during ripening. To investigate this, 500 nL L-1 1-MCP was applied within 1 day after harvest, followed by ethylene 0-14 days after 1-MCP. In addition, fruit were treated with ethylene, then 1-MCP 0-8 days after ethylene. Treatment of fruit with 500 nL L-1 1-MCP for 18 h at 20 degreesC provided the maximum effect by increasing the days from harvest to ripe (DTR) from 8 (with no 1-MCP) to 20. Fruit treated with 500 nL L-1 1-MCP for 18 h at 20 degreesC remained insensitive to 100 muL L-1 ethylene applied between 0 and 14 days after 1-MCP for 24 h at 20 degreesC. Ripening of fruit exposed to 100 muL L-1 ethylene for 24 h at 20 degreesC could be delayed by up to 3.3 days by applying 500 nL L-1 1-MCP for 18 h at 20 degreesC up to 2 days after ethylene treatment. However, once the fruit started to soften (sprung) there was little effect of 1-MCP on DTR, compared with no 1-MCP. 1-MCP treatment was associated with increased severity of body rots (caused mainly by Colletotrichum spp.) and stem-end rots (caused mainly by Dothiorella spp.), which was likely due to the increased DTR in these treatments. Significant differences in disease severity were found between orchards (replications), with replicates with low disease severity being less affected by 1-MCP treatment. These results indicate that 1-MCP can delay ripening, but careful sourcing of fruit is required to reduce the risk of diseases in ripe fruit. There is some capacity to delay ripening using 1-MCP after ethylene. There is little potential to control ripening using ethylene after treatment with 500 nL L-1 1-1-MCP, but lower concentrations may be more effective. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two mimics of the intermediate in the reaction catalyzed by ketol-acid reductoisomerase (KARI) were synthesized. Their structures were established on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, H-1 NMR and GC/mass detector. The crystal structure of compound 2 was found to be a substituted dioxane, formed by the condensation of two molecules. The two compounds showed some herbicidal activity on the basis of tests using rape root and barnyard grass growth inhibition. However, the herbicidal effect was weaker in greenhouse tests. The relatively low numbers and sporadic pattern of incidence of the acetic acid bacterium Gluconacetobacter sacchari with the pink sugarcane mealybug (PSMB) Saccharicoccus sacchari Cockerell (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) over time and from different sugarcane-growing regions do not indicate that Glac. sacchari is a significant commensal of the PSMB, as has been previously proposed. This study was conducted to investigate the hypothesis that Glac. sacchari is, like its closest relative Glac. diazotrophicus, an endophyte of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarium L.). In this study, both Glac. sacchari and Glac. diazotrophicus were isolated from internal sugarcane tissue, although the detection of both species was sporadic in all sugarcane-growing regions of Queensland tested. To confirm the ability of Glac. sacchari to live endophytically, an experiment was conducted in which the roots of micropropagated sugarcane plantlets were inoculated with Glac. sacchari, and the plantlets were subsequently examined for the presence of the bacterium in the stem cells. Pure cultures of Glac. sacchari were grown from homogenized surface sterilized sugarcane stems inoculated with Glac. sacchari. Electron microscopy was used to provide further conclusive evidence that Glac. sacchari lives as an endophyte in sugarcane. Scanning electron microscopy of (SEM) sugarcane plantlet stems revealed rod-shaped cells of Glac. sacchari within a transverse section of the plantlet stem cells. The numbers of bacterial cells inside the plant cell indicated a successful infection and colonization of the plant tissue. Using transmission electron microscopy, (TEM) bacterial cells were more difficult to find, due to their spatial separation. In our study, bacteria were mostly found singularly, or in groups of up to four cells inside intercellular spaces, although bacterial cells were occasionally found inside other cells.

Low temperature injury (LTI) of roses (Rosa hybrida L.) is difficult to assess by visual observation. Relative chlorophyll fluorescence (CF; F-v/F-m) is a non-invasive technique that provides an index of stress effects on photosystem 11 (PS 11) activity. This instrumental technique allows determination of the photosynthetic efficiency of plant tissues containing chloroplasts, such as rose leaves. In the present study, pre- and Post-Storage measurements of F-v/F-m were carried out to assess LTI in 'First Red' and 'Akito' roses harvested year round. Relationships between the pre-harvest environment conditions of temperature, relative humidity and photon flux density (PFD), F-v/F-m, and, vase life duration after storage are reported. After harvest, roses were stored at 1, 5 and 10 degrees C for 10 days. Non-stored roses were the control treatment. F-v/F-m ratios were reduced following storage, suggesting LTI of roses. However, reductions in F-v/F-m were not closely correlated with reduced vase life duration and were seasonally dependent. Only during winter experiments was F-v/F-m of roses stored at 1 degrees C significantly (P <= 0.001) lower compared to F-v/F-m of non-stored control roses and roses stored at 5 and 10 degrees C. Thus, the fall of F-v/F-m was due to an interaction of growing season and storage at 1 degrees C. Vase lives of roses grown during winter were significantly (P <= 0.001) shorter compared to roses grown during summer. Length of vase life was intermediate for roses grown during autumn and spring. Because of the lack of correlation between F-v/F-m and post-storage vase life it is concluded that the CF parameter F-v/F-m is nota practical index for assessing LTI in cold-stored roses. Higher PFD and temperature in summer were positively and significantly correlated with maintenance of post-storage FvIF ratios and longer vase life. It is suggested that shorter vase lives and lower post-storage F-v/F-m values after storage at 1 degrees C are consequences of reduced photosynthesis and smaller carbohydrate pools in winter-harvested roses. Treatment of cut freesia var. Cote d'Azur flowers with methyl jasmonate (MeJA, 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1)) vapour suppressed petal specking caused by Botrytis cinerea infection. MeJA efficacy was concentration and incubation temperature dependent. Disease severity, lesion numbers and lesion diameters decreased with increasing MeJA concentration from 0.025 to 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1). However, there were no significant (P > 0.05) differences among MeJA concentrations examined. MeJA was more effective in reducing B. cinerea flower specking at 20 degrees C than at 12 degrees C. MeJA treatment was ineffective at 5 degrees C. At 20 degrees C, MeJA treatment at 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1) reduced disease severity, lesion numbers and lesion diameters by 58, 50 and 48%, respectively, as compared to untreated controls. In a repeat experiment, disease severity, lesion numbers and lesion diameters on MeJA vapour treated flowers after 12 h of incubation were reduced by 68, 56 and 50%, respectively. MeJA did not exert direct antifungal activity in-vitro, suggesting that treatment in-vivo reduced B. cinerea-induced flower specking by induction of host defence responses. MeJA at 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1) significantly (P < 0.05) increased vase life of cut freesia flowers and delayed senescence judged by lower wilt scores and higher fresh weights as compared to untreated controls. Leaf area growth and nitrogen concentration per unit leaf area, N-a (g m(-2) N) are two options plants can use to adapt to nitrogen limitation. Previous work indicated that potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) adapts the size of leaves to maintain Na and photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf area. This paper reports on the effect of N limitation on leaf area production and photosynthetic capacity in maize, a C4 cereal. Maize was grown in two experiments in pots in glasshouses with three (0.84-6.0 g N pot(-1)) and five rates (0.5-6.0 g pot(-1)) of N. Leaf tip and ligule appearance were monitored and final individual leaf area was determined. Changes with leaf age in leaf area, leaf N content and light-saturated photosynthetic capacity, P a,, were measured on two leaves per plant in each experiment. The final area of the largest leaf and total plant leaf area differed by 16 and 29% from the lowest to highest N supply, but leaf appearance rate and the duration of leaf expansion were unaffected. The N concentration of expanding leaves (N-a or %N in dry matter) differed by at least a factor 2 from the lowest to highest N supply. A hyperbolic function described the relation between P-max and N-a. The results confirm the 'maize strategy': leaf N content, photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately radiation use efficiency is more sensitive to nitrogen limitation than are leaf area expansion and light interception. The generality of the findings is discussed and it is suggested that at canopy level species showing the 'potato strategy' can be recognized from little effect of nitrogen supply on radiation use efficiency, while the reverse is true for species showing the 'maize strategy' for adaptation to N limitation. Survival of vegetation on soil-capped mining wastes is often impaired during dry seasons due to the limited amount of water stored in the shallow soil capping. Growth and survival of Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) during soil drying on various layered capping sequences constructed of combinations of topsoil, subsoil, seawater-neutralised residue sand and low grade bauxite was determined in a glasshouse. The aim was to describe the survival of Rhodes grass in terms of plant and soil water relationships. The soil water characteristic curve and soil texture analysis was a good predictor of plant survival. The combination of soil with a high water holding capacity and low soil water diffusivity (e.g. subsoil with high clay contents) with soil having a high water holding capacity and high diffusivity (e.g. residue sand) gave best survival during drying down (up to 88 days without water), whereas topsoil and low grade bauxite were unsuitable (plants died within 18-39 days). Clayey soil improved plant survival by triggering a water stress response during peak evaporative water demand once residue sand dried down and its diffusivity fell below a critical range. Thus, for revegetation in seasonally dry climates, soil capping should combine one soil with low diffusivity and one or more soils with high total water holding capacity and high diffusivity.
