Howell, Mich. street scene

verso: Things reached a fever pitch in 1915 as the Wolverine Paved Way was nearing completion. A brick road from Detroit to Lansing would be finished and the town's main street would finally be paved. In this photograph autos had started from Lansing and picked up others in all the small towns on the way to Howell for the big celebration. As you can see, they didn't worry about parking. They stopped their cars in the street and left them. Before Prohibition, Howell was known as the fun city of Southern Michigan, and there is said to have been 13 bars in the main four blocks of town. All the travelling men made it a point to stay over in Howell whenever possible. It was said that you could not fall down on the main street of town without falling into the doorway of a bar. This probably explains the empty cars after a long dusty trip. Notice, too, that about half the cars are still right hand drive.

Lighthouse Presque Isle, Mich.

attached letter: Dear Professor Lorch: At the suggestion of the July 31, 1953 Newsletter of the Michigan Historical Society I am sending you two photoes [sic] of the old lighthouse and adjoining building on Presque Isle, Michigan located on the shore of Huron lake, supposedly the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. It is owned by Mr. F. B. Stebbins, 326 N. Capital, Lansing, Michigan. When through using the photos I would appreciate your returning them directly to him. The following information was given to me by Mr. Stebbins: Built in 1840, through a congressional appropriation of $5,000.- in Presque Isle county, described as, "Where a portage of 200 yards would save 4 miles of canoe trip." Jefferson Davis after graduation from West Point, was supposed to have built it. (According to careful historical investigation, this is not true. There is an article about this controversy in some back number of the Michigan History magazine. Mr. Stebbins feels very strongly about his. He prefers the legend, it sounds bigger). Francis Burgoyne Stebbins purchased from his Uncle Bliss Stebbins in 1930, who bought the property in 1930 from General Duffield of Dteoirt [sic], who had purchased it from the government a short time previously. This light-house was abandone [sic] upon the completion of a new lighthouse in 1872, one mile north from the present location. Adjoining house was used as a summer home. Condition restored in 1936. Estimating the recreational-use value for hiking in Bellenden Ker National Park, Australia

The recreational-use value of hiking in the Bellenden Ker National Park, Australia has been estimated using a zonal travel cost model. Multiple destination visitors have been accounted for by converting visitors' own ordinal ranking of the various sites visited to numerical weights, using an expected-value approach. The value of hiking and camping in this national park was found to be $AUS 250,825 per year, or $AUS 144,45 per visitor per year, which is similar to findings from other studies valuing recreational benefits. The management of the park can use these estimates when considering the introduction of a system of user pays fees. In addition, they might be important when decisions need to be made about the allocation of resources for maintenance or upgrade of tracks and facilities.

REDES DE EXTENSÃO UNIVERSITÁRIA: UM ESTUDO DA DIFUSÃO DO CONHECIMENTO NO CAMPO DA ADMINISTRAÇÃO

Esta pesquisa propõe a extensão como espaço de formação profissional por meio de práticas de atividades extensionistas. É competência das Universidades a formação de profissionais que estejam capacitados para a atual conjuntura do mercado. A questão é: estariam as Universidade preparadas para tal formação? As Instituições de Ensino Superior desenvolvem, em seu âmbito educacional, o conhecimento, e têm como responsabilidade social, a devolução do conhecimento à sociedade. Tais instituições têm um grande desafio, a redefinição de seu papel diante das transformações mundiais, como o conhecimento é difundido, e, como torná-lo comprometido com a sociedade. A indissociabilidade entre o ensino, a pesquisa e a extensão é um tripé que pode ser um caminho para o cumprimento da missão das IES no âmbito do compromisso social. Nesse contexto, a extensão universitária é um lugar privilegiado para o diálogo com a sociedade, como forma das IES desenvolverem seu papel social. A questão central a que este trabalho remete é como o conhecimento é difundido nas Redes de Extensão Universitárias. Assim, a presente pesquisa caracteriza-se como qualitativa, explicativa e descritiva. Compara as estruturas das relações de três redes, formadas por grupos de alunos do quarto semestre do curso de Administração de uma faculdade do Interior do Estado de São Paulo, inseridos numa prática de atividade extensionista desenvolvida no decorrer do segundo semestre de 2010. É possível, por meio da análise das redes, estudar o posicionamento estrutural e a intensidade do relacionamento entre os atores, e verificar como ocorre o condicionamento da difusão do conhecimento. Pode-se perceber que relações densas e coesas nas redes estudadas têm maiores possibilidades de promover a difusão de conhecimentos entre os atores. As conclusões da pesquisa revelam que a inserção de alunos em práticas extensionistas pode promover o desenvolvimento de competências e habilidades exigidas de um profissional de Administração, e que, também, podem agregar valor à formação desse profissional, no que diz respeito às experiências de uma práxis cidadã. A GOVERNANÇA REGIONAL E A IMPLANTAÇÃO DAS FATEC S DO GRANDE ABC

Esta pesquisa estuda a relação entre a gestão do ensino superior e a governança regional do Grande ABC. Trata-se de um estudo de casos múltiplos que objetiva analisar a implantação das Faculdades de Tecnologia FATEC s no ABC e sua relação com o Planejamento Regional Estratégico (PRE). Para tanto, foram estudados a trajetória e o contexto atual das universidades no Brasil; a história e a condição da região hoje; e o próprio Planejamento, concebido em 1999 2000, para contemplar um período de dez anos. Para a aplicação da pesquisa, foram realizadas visitas às unidades selecionadas (FATEC Mauá, FATEC Santo André, FATEC São Bernardo do Campo e FATEC São Caetano do Sul) e entrevistas com seus diretores. Tais entrevistas indicaram que a implantação das FATEC s no Grande ABC ocorreu, principalmente, devido ao plano de expansão do CEETEPS. Porém, através da pesquisa bibliográfica, é possível afirmar que a governança regional já discutia a chegada dessas unidades há anos, mencionando o projeto de implantação no PRE. O desconhecimento dos diretores entrevistados em relação ao PRE afirma a falta de continuidade do trabalho proposto pela governança. Portanto, a discussão política, ou de gestão consorcial da região, em torno do tripé ensino superior (FATEC), Grande ABC e desenvolvimento socioeconômico faz-se necessária e urgente, visando novas propostas para problemas como desemprego, desigualdade social, qualificação de pessoas e educação democrática fatores de desenvolvimento que merecem atenção da governança de uma região com alta expressão econômica e social no Estado de São Paulo e no Brasil.(AU)

Por uma cristologia pluralista da libertação: reflexões teológicas a partir de Jacques Dupuis e Jon Sobrino

O objetivo central desta pesquisa é desvendar possibilidades no estabelecimento de prováveis eixos básicos de uma cristologia pluralista da libertação, a partir das reflexões teológicas de Jon Sobrino (1938-) e Jacques Dupuis (1923-2004). Para tanto, se reconhecem cotidianamente os entrecruzamentos de sinais dos tempos, como as diferenças religiosas e as violações de direitos e injustiças sociais. A partir desta problemática, toma-se como hipótese a necessidade de se demonstrar a articulação em andamento entre perspectivas das teologias da libertação com perspectivas das teologias cristãs do pluralismo religioso, sinalizando um novo modo de fazer teologia. O trabalho aqui desenvolvido dialoga com os estudos culturais, especialmente com os conceitos de Homi Bhabha, o referencial teórico desta pesquisa, que possibilitou, criticamente, o entrelaçamento das perspectivas de Jacques Dupuis e Jon Sobrino. Para a construção desta cristologia, seguiu-se um tripé metodológico: revisão, reconstrução e reinvenção. O trabalho buscou revisar os discursos teológicos apresentados por Jon Sobrino e Jacques Dupuis; reconstruir as reflexões teológicas elaboradas por estes autores; e reinventar uma cristologia que se mostre como um terceiro espaço, um entrelugar discursivo, uma cristologia pluralista da libertação, que não é nem o um (a cristologia da libertação) nem o outro (a teologia cristã do pluralismo religioso), mas algo a mais, uma fala híbrida elaborada a partir de determinadas zonas de contato entre os autores. A pesquisa apresenta como eixos: (i) uma cristologia integral: vivenciada nos espaços cotidianos, com uma reflexão a partir das vítimas e do espírito das testemunhas; (ii) uma cristologia trinitária: refletida a partir d@ outr@ e centrada no mistério inesgotável, na humanização do divino e na força do Espírito; e (iii) uma cristologia reinoteocêntrica: vocacionada ao reino de Deus, numa tensão entre a parcialidade com as vítimas e a universalidade da ação de Deus, numa elaboração nas vias da mística e em um discurso cristológico estruturado na (des)missão. Tais eixos possuem implicações políticas, uma vez que esta cristologia se constrói como uma dupla função: é objeto de estudo e é espaço para a atuação política, reconhecendo que novos discursos e linguagens relacionam-se com novas atuações e mobilizações sociais.

CARAVANA FARKAS (1968/1970): a cultura popular (re)interpretada pelo filme documentário ¾ um estudo de folkmídia.

Este trabalho busca identificar a maneira pela qual a cultura popular é (re)interpretada nos meios de comunicação de massa, a partir da análise dos filmes documentários produzidos pela Caravana Farkas, um projeto pioneiro de documentação de manifestações de cultura popular brasileira, realizado entre 1968 e 1970 no Nordeste. Para tanto, discute-se como os filmes se inserem no panorama político-cultural do Brasil da década de 60; quais as condições que permitiram a construção de seus discursos; que regras esses discursos estabeleceram; como e por que as manifestações culturais populares passaram a constituir objeto de estudo e de registro dos cineastas; e o que era definido por eles como cultura popular . O tema básico que perpassa os filmes é o da cultura de uma classe outra, que está no passado e não tem lugar no aqui e agora da modernidade. A alteridade e a representação do outro estão traspassadas pelas diferenças de classe, e o caráter de resistência cultural e política das manifestações de cultura popular, na visão dos cineastas, se perde na aparência de um mundo cujo destino já está traçado: é a extinção. Os filmes documentários, por outro lado, servem de lugar de confronto das diferentes culturas e de diálogo entre elas, gerando novos e múltiplos significados, que independem da vontade dos cineastas. É dessa maneira que constroem um novo discurso acerca de uma determinada realidade. Menos um reflexo, no sentido de espelhamento, mais uma referência de um tempo e um espaço que não se repetirão. Nas trilhas da cultura popular, a viagem da Caravana Farkas não chega a um termo nem a um final tranqüilo, pois é envolvida pelas contradições e incompatibilidades que as questões suscitadas pela discussão do real provocam. Mas deixa evidente que a sua importância para os estudos da Comunicação está na própria jornada e no diálogo permanente e infinito entre culturas que esse caminhar provoca.

Maintenance strategies affecting equipment performance

Proper maintenance of plant items is crucial for the safe and profitable operation of process plants, The relevant maintenance policies fall into the following four categories: (i) preventivejopportunistic/breakdown replacement policies, (ii) inspection/inspection-repair-replacernent policies, (iii) restorative maintenance policies, and (iv) condition based maintenance policies, For correlating failure times of component equipnent and complete systems, the Weibull failure distribution has been used, A new powerful method, SEQLIM, has been proposed for the estimation of the Weibull parameters; particularly, when maintenance records contain very few failures and many successful operation times. When a system consists of a number of replaceable, ageing components, an opporturistic replacernent policy has been found to be cost-effective, A simple opportunistic rrodel has been developed. Inspection models with various objective functions have been investigated, It was found that, on the assumption of a negative exponential failure distribution, all models converge to the same optimal inspection interval; provided the safety components are very reliable and the demand rate is low, When deterioration becomes a contributory factor to same failures, periodic inspections, calculated from above models, are too frequent, A case of safety trip systems has been studied, A highly effective restorative maintenance policy can be developed if the performance of the equipment under this category can be related to some predictive modelling. A novel fouling model has been proposed to determine cleaning strategies of condensers, Condition-based maintenance policies have been investigated. A simple gauge has been designed for condition monitoring of relief valve springs. A typical case of an exothermic inert gas generation plant has been studied, to demonstrate how various policies can be applied to devise overall maintenance actions.

Implementing an adaptive TCP fairness while exploiting 802.11e over wireless mesh networks

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the use of 802.11e MAC to resolve the transmission control protocol (TCP) unfairness. Design/methodology/approach: The paper shows how a TCP sender may adapt its transmission rate using the number of hops and the standard deviation of recently measured round-trip times to address the TCP unfairness. Findings: Simulation results show that the proposed techniques provide even throughput by providing TCP fairness as the number of hops increases over a wireless mesh network (WMN). Research limitations/implications: Future work will examine the performance of TCP over routing protocols, which use different routing metrics. Other future work is scalability over WMNs. Since scalability is a problem with communication in multi-hop, carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) will be compared with time division multiple access (TDMA) and a hybrid of TDMA and code division multiple access (CDMA) will be designed that works with TCP and other traffic. Finally, to further improve network performance and also increase network capacity of TCP for WMNs, the usage of multiple channels instead of only a single fixed channel will be exploited. Practical implications: By allowing the tuning of the 802.11e MAC parameters that have previously been constant in 802.11 MAC, the paper proposes the usage of 802.11e MAC on a per class basis by collecting the TCP ACK into a single class and a novel congestion control method for TCP over a WMN. The key feature of the proposed TCP algorithm is the detection of congestion by measuring the fluctuation of RTT of the TCP ACK samples via the standard deviation, plus the combined the 802.11e AIFS and CWmin allowing the TCP ACK to be prioritised which allows the TCP ACKs will match the volume of the TCP data packets. While 802.11e MAC provides flexibility and flow/congestion control mechanism, the challenge is to take advantage of these features in 802.11e MAC. Originality/value: With 802.11 MAC not having flexibility and flow/congestion control mechanisms implemented with TCP, these contribute to TCP unfairness with competing flows. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Accessibility indices and linked trips: a case study of the elderly

The confusion over the concept of accessibility in transport planning and the deficiencies of existing accessibility indices are examined by developing a conceptual framework of accessibility with a fundamental distinction being drawn between the, often conflicting, theoretical and practical dimensions. The theoretical validity of alternative indices is assessed with reference to the problems and assumptions implicit in defining, measuring, valuing and aggregating the variables and components comprising accessibility. The major deficiencies of existing indices are identified as the inability of indices to take account of the potential to link trips between more than one activity location and the level of assumptions implicit in valuing and aggregating accessibility information. In this context, it is argued that accessibility information is more appropriately expressed on a comparative basis in the form of a profile rather than as a composite single-unit index and that the present confines of accessibility measurement must be extended in line with current developments in disaggregate travel and activity modelling. The sensitivity of accessibility levels to the use of alternative value judgements, alternative forms and levels of aggregation and the inclusion of information on the potential to link trips is examined by undertaking a case study. Accessibility profiles are developed for 23 zones in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham showing the accessibility of the elderly to post offices and grocers. In a practical context, the profiles assist in identifying areas and individuals with relatively poor accessibility. The incidence and nature of linked trip-making and its significance and implications for accessibility measurement are explored further by analysing the results of a survey of the elderly's travel patterns. It is concluded that future accessibility analysis should be undertaken at a disaggregate level, taking account of the potential opportunity available from nonhome as well as home origins.
