This paper explores a new source of graphite for working electrodes, which presents advantages such as low electrical resistance, good flexibility, favorable mechanical performance, versatility to design electrodes in almost any size and very low cost. The new electrodes were investigated in batch electrochemical cells as associated with flow injection analysis systems. Cyclic voltammetry, stripping voltammetry, and amperometry associated with flow injection analysis techniques were applied for the determination of ascorbic acid, zinc and paracetamol in pharmaceutical formulations, respectively. Well-established analytical methods were applied for comparison purposes. The results herein demonstrate the potential of graphite foils as working electrodes in different electroanalytical methods, offering the possibility of producing disposable sensors for routine applications.

PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was prepared in a single step by an alcohol-reduction process using ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent and CeO(2) (15 wt%) and Vulcan XC72 (85 wt%) as supports. The performance for ethanol oxidation was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of the PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was higher than that of the PtSn/C electrocatalyst. FTIR studies for ethanol oxidation on PtSn/C electrocatalyst showed that acetaldehyde and acetic acid were the principal products formed, while on PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst the principal products formed were CO(2) and acetic acid.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated on carbon-supported Pt-Co nanoparticle electrocatalysts with low Pt content in alkaline electrolyte. High resolution transmission electron microscopy, In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis evidenced large structural differences of the Pt-Co particles depending oil the route of the catalyst synthesis. It was demonstrated that although the Pt-Co materials contain low amounts of Pt, they show very good activities when the particles are formed by a Pt-rich shell and a Pt-Co core, which was obtained after submitting the electrocatalyst to a potential cycling in acid electrolyte. The high activity of this material was due to a major contribution from its higher surface area, as a result of the leaching of the Co atoms from the particle Surface. Furthermore, its high activity was ascribed to a minor contribution from the electronic interaction of the Pt atoms, at the particle surface, and the Co atoms located in the beneath layer, lowering the Pt cl-band center. As these electrocatalysts presented high activity for the ORR with low Pt content, the cost of the fuel cell cathodes could be lowered considerably. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents results of studies of carbon-dispersed Pt-Rh (1:1) nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for the ethanol electro-oxidation. The influences of the crystallite size and the cell temperature on the yields of CO2, acetaldehyde and acetic acid are investigated. Metal nanoparticles were prepared by two different routes: (1) impregnation on carbon powder followed by thermal reduction on hydrogen atmosphere and (2) chemical reduction of the precursor salts. The surface active area and the electrochemical activity of the electrocatalysts were estimated by CO stripping and cyclic voltammetry in the absence and in the presence of ethanol, respectively. Reaction intermediates and products were analyzed by in situ Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The electrochemical stripping of CO and the electrochemical ethanol oxidation were slightly faster on the Pt-Rh electrocatalysts compared to Pt/C. Also, in situ FTIR spectra and DEMS measurements evidenced that the CO2/acetaldehyde and the CO2/acetic acid ratios are higher for the Pt-Rh/C materials in relation to Pt/C. This was ascribed to the activation of the C-C bond breaking by Rh, this being more prominent for the materials with smaller crystallite sizes. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mathematical modeling has been extensively applied to the study and development of fuel cells. In this work, the objective is to characterize a mechanistic model for the anode of a direct ethanol fuel cell and perform appropriate simulations. The software Comsol Multiphysics (R) (and the Chemical Engineering Module) was used in this work. The software Comsol Multiphysics (R) is an interactive environment for modeling scientific and engineering applications using partial differential equations (PDEs). Based on the finite element method, it provides speed and accuracy for several applications. The mechanistic model developed here can supply details of the physical system, such as the concentration profiles of the components within the anode and the coverage of the adsorbed species on the electrode surface. Also, the anode overpotential-current relationship can be obtained. To validate the anode model presented in this paper, experimental data obtained with a single fuel cell operating with an ethanol solution at the anode were used. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The bioelectrochemical behavior of three triphenylmethane (TPM) dyes commonly used as pH indicators, and their application in mediated electron transfer systems for glucose oxidase bioanodes in biofuel cells was investigated. Bromophenol Blue, Bromothymol Blue, Bromocresol Green were compared bio-electrochemically against two widely used mediators, benzoquinone and ferrocene carboxy aldehyde. Biochemical studies were performed in terms of enzymatic oxidation, enzyme affinity, catalytic efficiency and co-factor regeneration. The different features of the TPM dyes as mediators are determined by the characteristics in the oxidation/reduction processes studied electrochemically. The reversibility of the oxidation/reduction processes was also established through the dependence of the voltammetric peaks with the sweep rates. All three dyes showed good performances compared to the FA and BQ when evaluated in a half enzymatic fuel cell. Potentiodynamic and power response experiments showed maxima power densities of 32.8 mu W cm(-2) for ferrocene carboxy aldehyde followed by similar values obtained for TPM dyes around 30 mu W cm(-2) using glucose and mediator concentrations of 10 mmol L(-1) and 1.0 mmol L(-1), respectively. Since no mediator consumption was observed during the bioelectrochemical process, and also good redox re-cycled processes were achieved, the use of triphenylmethane dyes is considered to be promising compared to other mediated systems used with glucose oxiclase bioanodes and/or biofuel cells. Pt monolayers deposited on carbon- supported Ru and Rh nanoparticles were investigated as electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation. Electronic features of the Pt monolayers were studied by in situ XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure). The electrochemical activity was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and cronoamperometric experiments. Spectroscopic and electrochemical results were compared to those obtained on carbon-supported Pt-Ru and Pt-Rh alloys, and Pt E-TEK. XAS results indicate a modification of the Pt 5d band due to geometric and electronic interactions with the Ru ant Rh substrates, but the effect of withdrawing electrons from Pt is less pronounced in relation to that for the corresponding alloys. Electrochemical stripping of adsorbed CO, which is one of the intermediates, and the currents for the oxidation of ethanol show faster kinetics on the Pt monolayer deposited on Ru nanoparticles, and an activity that exceeds that of conventional catalysts with much larger amounts of platinum. The catalytic performance of Co/Al2O3 catalysts promoted with small amounts noble metals (Pt, Pd, Ru, Ir) for steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) has been investigated. The catalysts were characterized by the energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, BET surface area, X-ray absorption fine structure and temperature reduction programmed techniques. The results showed that the promoting effect of noble metals included a marked decrease of the reduction temperatures of both Co3O4 and cobalt surface species interacting with the support due to the hydrogen spillover effect, leading to a significant increase of the reducibilities of the promoted catalysts. The better catalytic performance for the ethanol steam reforming at 400 degrees C was obtained for the CoRu/Al2O3 catalyst, which presented an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H, selectivity and the reasonable low CO formation. Electrochemical systems are ideal working-horses for studying oscillatory dynamics. Experimentally obtained time series, however, are usually associated with a spontaneous drift in some uncontrollable parameter that triggers transitions among different oscillatory patterns, despite the fact that all controllable parameters are kept constant. Herein we present an empirical method to stabilize experimental potential time series. The method consists of applying a negative galvanodynamic sweep to compensate the spontaneous drift and was tested for the oscillatory electro-oxidation of methanol on platinum. For a wide range of applied currents, the base system presents spontaneous transitions from quasi-harmonic to mixed mode oscillations. Temporal patterns were stabilized by galvanodynamic sweeps at different rates. The procedure resulted in a considerable increase in the number of oscillatory cycles from 5 to 20 times, depending on the specific temporal pattern. The spontaneous drift has been associated with uncompensated oscillations, in which the coverage of some adsorbed species are not reestablished after one cycle; i.e., there is a net accumulation and/or depletion of adsorbed species during oscillations. We interpreted the rate of the galvanodynamic sweep in terms of the time scales of the poisoning processes that underlies the uncompensated oscillations and thus the spontaneous slow drift.

A carbon-supported binary Pt(3)Sn catalyst has been prepared using a modified polymeric precursor method under controlled synthesis conditions This material was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD). and the results indicate that 23% (of a possible 25%) of Sn is alloyed with Pt, forming a dominant Pt(3)Sn phase. Transmission election microscopy (TEM) shows good dispersion of the electrocatalyst and small particle sizes (3 6 nm +/- 1 nm) The polarization curves for a direct ethanol fuel cell using Pt(3)Sn/C as the anode demonstrated Improved performance compared to that of a PtSn/C E-TEK. especially in the intrinsic resistance-controlled and mass transfer regions. This behavior is probably associated with the Pt(3)Sn phase. The maximum power density for the Pt(3)Sn/C electrocatalyst (58 mW cm(-2)) is nearly twice that of a PtSn/C E-TEK electrocatalyst (33 mW cm(-2)) This behavior is attributed to the presence of a mixed Pt(9)Sn and Pt(3)Sn alloy phase in the commercial catalysts (C) 2009 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

The electro-oxidation of ethanol on platinum in phosphoric acid opens the door to promote the oxidation reaction at higher temperatures. However, the effect of the presence of water is not well understood. In this work, the electro-oxidation of ethanol on platinum was studied in concentrated phosphoric acid containing different concentrations of water at room temperature. The results show that effect of bulk water on the rate electro-oxidation is highest at 0.60 V and decreases for increasing potentials. This was suggested as due to the increasing formation of oxygenated species on the electrode surface with potential, which in turn is more efficient than the increase of water content in the electrolyte. Altogether, these results were interpreted as an evidence of a Langmuir-Hinshelwood step involving oxygenated species as one of the adsorbed partners. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of variations in the composition for ternary catalysts of the type Pt-x(Ru-Ir)(1-x)/C on the methanol oxidation reaction in acid media for x values of 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 is reported. The catalysts were prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. The nanometric character (2.8-3.2 nm) of the sol-gel deposits was demonstrated by XRD and TEM while EDX and AAS analyses showed that the metallic ratio in the compounds was very near to the expected one. Cyclic voltammograms for methanol oxidation revealed that the reaction onset occur at less positive potentials in all the ternary catalysts tested here when compared to a Pt-0.75-Ru-0.25/C (E-Tek) commercial composite. Steady-state polarization experiments (Tafel plots) showed that the Pt-0.25(Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C catalyst is the more active one for methanol oxidation as revealed by the shift of the reaction onset towards lower potentials. In addition, constant potential electrolyses suggest that the addition of Ru and Ir to Pt decreases the poisoning effect of the strongly adsorbed species generated during methanol oxidation. Consequently, the Pt-0.25 (Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C Composite catalyst is a very promising one for practical applications. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The search for more efficient anode catalyst than platinum to be used in direct alcohol fuel cell systems is an important challenge. In this study, boron-doped diamond film surfaces were modified with Pt, Pt-SnO(2) and Pt-Ta(2)O(5) nano-crystalline deposits by the sol-gel method to study the methanol and ethanol electro-oxidation reactions in acidic medium. Electrochemical experiments carried out in steady-state conditions demonstrate that the addition of SnO(2) to Pt produces a very reactive electrocatalyst that possibly adsorbs and/or dissociate ethanol more efficiently than pure Pt changing the onset potential of the reaction by 190 mV toward less positive potentials. Furthermore, the addition of Ta(2)O(5) to Pt enhances the catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation resulting in a negative shift of the onset potential of 170 mV. These synergic effects indicate that the addition of these co-catalysts inhibits the poisoning effect caused by strongly adsorbed intermediary species. Since the SnO(2) catalyst was more efficient for ethanol oxidation, it could probably facilitate the cleavage of the C-C bond of the adsorbed intermediate fragments of the reaction. A comparative study of two different conductive carbon-black pigments, Vulcan XC-72 R and Printex L6, for the electrogeneration of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) by reducing dissolved oxygen in an alkaline solution was performed. The materials were physically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XRD shows the presence of SO(2) and ATR-FTIR technique indicates a difference in NO and SO(2) functional groups between the two carbon pigments. XPS indicated presence of SO and NO and more oxygenated acid species on Printex L6. A rotating ring-disk electrode was used for electrochemical analysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The results showed that the Printex L6 was better than Vulcan XC-72 R for H(2)O(2) production. Results also indicate that the number of electrons transferred in the ORR for Printex L6 and Vulcan XC-72 R were 2.2 and 2.9, respectively, while the percentages of H(2)O(2) formed were 88% and 51%. Scanning electrochemistry microscopy images confirmed the higher amount of H(2)O(2) formed in the Printex L6 pigment. Printex L6 was shown to be a more promising for H(2)O(2) production than Vulcan XC-72 R, while the latter was shown to have more potential for fuel cells. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

One of the key objectives in fuel-cell technology is to improve the performance of the anode catalyst for the alcohol oxidation and reduce Pt loading. Here, we show the use of six different electrocatalysts synthesized by the sol -gel method on carbon powder to promote the oxidation of methanol in acid media. The catalysts Pt-PbO(x) and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x)) with 10% of catalyst load exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction as compared to Pt-(RuO(2))/C and Pt/C electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry studies showed that the electrocatalysts Pt-PbO(x)/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C started the oxidation process at extremely low potentials and that they represent a good novelty to oxidize methanol. Furthermore, quasi-stationary polarization experiments and cronoamperometry studies showed the good performance of the Pt-PbO(x), Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-IrO(2))/C catalysts during the oxidation process. Thus, the addition of metallic Pt and PbO(x) onto high-area carbon powder, by the sol -gel route, constitutes an interesting way to prepare anodes with high catalytic activity for further applications in direct methanol fuel cell systems.
