The late Quaternary palaeoenvironmental history of the southern Windmill Islands, East Antarctica, has been reconstructed using diatom assemblages from two long, well-dated sediment cores taken in two marine bays. The diatom assemblage of the lowest sediment layers suggests a warm climate with mostly open water conditions during the late Pleistocene. During the following glacial, the Windmill Islands were covered by grounded ice preventing any in situ bioproductivity. Following deglaciation, a sapropel with a well-preserved diatom assemblage was deposited from ~10500 cal yr BP. Between ~10500 and ~4000 cal yr BP, total organic carbon (Corg) and total diatom valve concentrations as well as the diatom species composition suggest relatively cool summer temperatures. Hydrological conditions in coastal bays were characterised by combined winter sea-ice and open water conditions. This extensive period of glacial retreat was followed by the Holocene optimum (~4000 to ~1000 cal yr BP), which occurred later in the southern Windmill Islands than in most other Antarctic coastal regions. Diatom assemblages in this period suggest ice-free conditions and meltwater-stratified waters in the marine bays during summer, which is also reflected in high proportions of freshwater diatoms in the sediments. The diatom assemblage in the upper sediments of both cores indicates Neoglacial cooling from ~1000 cal yr BP, which again led to seasonally persistent sea-ice on the bays. The Holocene optimum and cooling trends in the Windmill Islands did not occur contemporaneously with other Antarctic coastal regions, showing that the here presented record reflects partly local environmental conditions rather than global climatic trends.

The origin of two acoustic sediment units has been studied based on lithological facies, chronology and benthic stable isotope values as well as on foraminifera and clay mineral assemblages in six marine sediment cores from Kveithola, a small trough west of Spitsbergenbanken on the western Barents Sea margin. We have identified four time slices with characteristic sedimentary environments. Before c. 14.2 cal. ka, rhythmically laminated muds indicate extensive sea ice cover in the area. From c. 13.9 to 14.2 cal. ka, muds rich in ice-rafted debris were deposited during the disintegration of grounded ice on Spitsbergenbanken. From c. 10.3 to 13.1 cal. ka, sediments with heterogeneous lithologies suggest a shifting influence of suspension settling and iceberg rafting, probably derived from a decaying Barents Sea Ice Sheet in the inner-fjord and land areas to the north of Kveithola. Holocene deposition was episodic and characterized by the deposition of calcareous sands and shell debris, indicative of strong bottom currents. We speculate that a marked erosional boundary at c. 8.2 cal. ka may have been caused by the Storegga tsunami. Whilst deposition was sparse during the Holocene, Kveithola acted as a sediment trap during the preceding deglaciation. Investigation of the deglacial sediments provides unprecedented details on the dynamics and timing of glacial retreat from Spitsbergenbanken.

The continental margin off the La Plata Estuary (SE South America) is characterized by high fluvial sediment supply and strong ocean currents. High-resolution sediment-acoustic data combined with sedimentary facies analysis, AMS-14C ages, and neodymium isotopic data allowed us to reconstruct late Quaternary sedimentary dynamics in relation to the two major sediment sources, the La Plata Estuary and the Argentine margin. Sediments from these two provinces show completely different dispersal patterns. We show that the northward-trending La Plata paleo-valley was the sole transit path for the huge volumes of fluvial material during lower sea levels. In contrast, material from the Argentine margin sector was transported northwards by the strong current system. Despite the large sediment volumes supplied by both sources, wide parts of the shelf were characterized by either persistent non-deposition or local short-term depocenter formation. The location and formation history of these depocenters were primarily controlled by the interplay of sea level with current strength and local morphology. The high sediment supply was of secondary importance to the stratigraphic construction, though locally resulting in high sedimentation rates. Thus, the shelf system off the La Plata Estuary can be considered as a hydrodynamic-controlled end-member.

A multidisciplinary study was undertaken at the Qijurittuq Site (IbGk-3) on Drayton Island in Low-Arctic Quebec (Canada) to document the relationships between climatic, environmental, and cultural changes and the choice of Thule/Inuit dwelling style in the eastern Arctic. Several marine terraces were 14C-dated with shells in order to reconstruct the area's uplift (glacioisostatic rebound) curve. Plant macrofossil analysis of peat was conducted to reconstruct past vegetation and, indirectly, past climate. Archaeological surveys and excavations characterized the structure of subterranean sod houses at the Qijurittuq Site and were supplemented with open interviews with Inuit elders for a better understanding of site location and the use of household space. The sites selected for habitation were well-drained sandy marine terraces in a valley sheltered from prevailing winds. Sod houses were in turn made possible by the abundance of driftwood on the island and the presence of nearby peatland. Thule/Inuit people used semi-subterranean houses rather than igloos at the Qijurittuq Site during the dry, cold conditions toward the end of the Little Ice Age. Stable environmental conditions and food supply during winter possibly explain the use of those semipermanent houses on Drayton Island. However, it does not exclude the use of igloos during short expeditions on ice.

The 106 m long composite profile from site 2 of ICDP expedition 5022 (PASADO) at Laguna Potrok Aike documents a distinct change in sedimentation patterns from pelagic sediments at the top to dominating mass movement deposits at its base. The main lithological units correspond to the Holocene, to the Lateglacial and to the last glacial period and can be interpreted as the result of distinct environmental variations. Overflow conditions might have been achieved during the last glacial period, while signs of desiccation are absent in the studied sediment record. Altogether, 58 radiocarbon dates were used to establish a consistent age-depth model by applying the mixed-effect regression procedure which results in a basal age of 51.2 cal. ka BP. Radiocarbon dates show a considerable increase in scatter with depth which is related to the high amount of reworking. Validation of the obtained chronology was achieved with geomagnetic relative paleointensity data and tephra correlation.

The bimodal, alkaline volcanic suite of the Kap Washington Group (KWG) at the northern coast of Greenland was investigated during the BGR CASE 2 expedition in 1994. Geochemical and Nd and Sr isotopic data are presented for basalts to rhyolites of the KWG and of related basaltic dykes cutting Lower Paleozoic sediments. In the evd(t) vs. (87Sr/86Sr)t diagram, the KWG basalts and rhyolites follow a common mixing trend with increasing crustal contamination from basic to acid volcanites. Assimilation of pre-existing crustal rocks during formation of the rhyolitic melt is documented by Nd model ages of 0.9-1.2 Ga and by different fractionation trends for the basalts and the rhyolites in the Y vs. Zr diagram. Petrographical and geochemical features indicate intra-plate volcanism which was active most probably during a continental rifting phase. A new Rb/Sr whole rock age on rhyolites of 64 ±3 Ma, corresponding to the result of LARSEN (1982), confirms that the volcanic activity lasted until the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. 40Ar139Ar dating on amphibol separates from a comendite yielded strongly disturbed age spectra with a minimum age of 37.7 ±0.3 Ma. This age is interpreted to date a hydrothermal overprint of the volcanic rocks related to compressive tectonics which led to the overthrust of basement rocks over the Kap Washington Group.

Detrital K-feldspars and muscovites from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 116 cores that have depositional ages from 0 to 18 Ma have been dated by the 40Ar/39Ar technique. Four to thirteen individual K-feldspars have been dated from seven stratigraphic levels, each of which have a very large range, up to 1660 Ma. At each level investigated, at least one K-feldspar yielded an age minimum which is, within uncertainty, identical to the age of deposition. One to twelve single muscovite crystals from each of six levels have also been studied. The range of muscovite ages is less than that of the K-feldspars and, with one exception, reveal only a 20-Ma spread in ages. As with the K-feldspars, each level investigated contains muscovites with mineral ages essentially identical to depositional ages. These results indicate that a significant portion of the material in the Bengal Fan is first-cycle detritus derived from the Himalayas. Therefore, the significant proportion of sediment deposited in the distal fan in the early to mid Miocene can be ascribed to a significant pulse of uplift and erosion in the collision zone. Moreover, these data indicate that during the entire Neogene, some portion of the Himalayan orogen was experiencing rapid erosion (<= uplift). The lack of granulite facies rocks in the eastern Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau suggests that very rapid uplift must have been distributed in brief pulses in different places in the mountain belt. We suggest that the great majority of the crystals with young apparent ages have been derived from the southern slope of the Himalayas, predominantly from near the main central thrust zone. These data provide further evidence against tectonic models in which the Himalayas and Tibetan plateaus are uplifted either uniformly during the past 40 m.y. or mostly within the last 2 to 5 m.y.

Ocean circulation changes along the continental shelf of the Nordic and Barents Seas have been investigated in order to reconstruct regional changes in the inflow of Atlantic Water (AW) through the last 16,000 calibrated (cal) years (yr) B.P. We have selected five time-slices representing the late glacial (16,000-15,000 cal yr B.P.), the Bølling-Allerød warm interstadials (14,500-13,500 cal yr B.P.), the Younger Dryas cold stadial (12,500-11,500 cal yr B.P.), the early Holocene (9500-7500 cal yr B.P.) and the late Holocene (4000-2000 cal yr B.P.). Twelve previously published records of the distribution of benthic foraminifera faunas and ice-rafted debris have been compiled. The earliest sign of Atlantic Water inflow was recorded at the northern Iceland shelf at 16,000-15,000 cal yr B.P. The inflow of warm AW to the Nordic Seas shelf has been persistent since, but with variable strength and geographic pattern. An apparent zonal seesaw pattern in the strength of the Norwegian Atlantic Current (NwAC) and the Irminger Current (IC) during the late glacial, Bølling-Allerød and Younger Dryas periods was found. During the Holocene, no zonal differences in the inflows of NwAC and IC were found. A strong meridional gradient with warmer conditions at lower latitudes and relatively cold conditions at high northern latitudes existed.

Changes in the ventilation of the Southern Ocean are thought to play an important role on deglacial carbon and radiocarbon evolution, but have not been tested within a coupled climate-carbon model. Here, we present such a simulation based on a simple scenario of transient deglacial sinking of brines - sea-ice salt rejections - around Antarctica, which modulates Southern Ocean ventilation. This experiment is able to reproduce deglacial atmospheric changes in carbon and radiocarbon but also ocean radiocarbon records measured in the Atlantic, Southern and Pacific Oceans. Simulated for the first time in a fully coupled climate-carbon model including radiocarbon, our modeling results suggest that the deglacial changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and radiocarbon were achieved by means of a breakdown in the glacial brine-induced stratification of the Southern Ocean.
