Preeclampsia is a specific disorder of pregnancy, characterized by arterial hypertension and proteinuria detected after 20 weeks of gestation. This pathology is associated with hyperuricemia, higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, enhanced leukocyte activation and oxidative stress. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme present in all human tissues and, it is involved with the maturation of the immune system. Although its function is not fully understood, ADA is considered an indicator of cellular inflammation and, its increased serum concentration is observed in inflammatory diseases, such as tuberculosis and rheumatoid arthritis. This study aimed to assess serum ADA levels in preeclamptic patients (PE) compared with normotensive pregnant (NT) and non-pregnant women (NP), and to correlate these values with TNF-α and IL-1β production. Ninety pregnant women were included: 60 were pre-eclamptic and 30 were normotensive matched for gestational age. As control group 20 healthy non-pregnant women matched with pregnant for age were included. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PMMC) obtained from the three groups studied were cultured with or without lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 18h at 37oC, and TNF-α and IL-1β production was assessed in the supernatant of cultures by enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). ADA plasmatic concentration was determined by colorimetric method. The results show that ADA plasma levels were significantly higher in PE group compared with NT and NP groups. A positive correlation between ADA and uric acid levels was detected in preeclamptic women. There was no significant difference in relation to ADA levels when PE patients were classified in early and late-onset PE. The endogenous production of IL-1β and TNF-α by PBMC was significantly higher in PE group than in NT and NP women, showing the activation state of these cells in PE. LPS induced...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The leukocyte count interpretation on the blood helps on understanding about the possible dysfunction showed by the animal. In general, an abnormal leukogram allows the identification of pathological process. A lot of events lead to an increase in the number of neutrophils, among then, inflammatory process, infection and stress. Dependent on the stress mediator that the animal is submited, the leukocyte alteration will be different. Is important to know how the stress acts on the animal organism, changing the hematological parameters, in order to avoid mistakes on diseases‟ diagnosis. It‟s known that after a stress situation, it‟s expected that stress leukogram appears on the hemogram of the animal. However there are different kinds of stress with different responses. It‟s believed that when the animal is under an acute stress situation, a clinical picture of physiologic leukocytosis occurs which is mediated by the epinephrine. This is characterized by neutrophilia, lymphocytosis, monocytosis and eosinofilia. The physiologic leukocytosis is a transient alteration in the leukogram that occurs within minutes of the stimulus and due to fleeting effect of catecolamines it resolves within 20 to 30 minutes. However, if the animal is under chronicle stress, as solitude, it „s expected to find the stress leukogram on the leukogram, that can be noted especially in dogs. The stress leukogram is characterized by leukocytosis, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, monocytosis and eosinopenia. This kind of stress is induced by the glucocorticoids. It´s important to understand that stress leukogram takes time to occur. The variation on time depends on the animal species, although, in general, the glucocorticoides have a peak effects among 4 to 8 hours, which can last from 24 hours to 2 or 3 days

Function of the uterus is often compromised in cattle by bacterial contamination of the uterine lumen after parturition. Pathogenic bacteria often persist, causing uterine disease, a major cause of infertility in cattle. Knowledge of the immunological aspects of the uterus involved in maintaining reproductive healthiness is fundamental to the study of uterine infections that affect the uterus postpartum. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes have an important role because they are the first line of defense against colonization of bacteria in utero (Hammon and Goff, 2006). The establishment of uterine infection depends in parts of endocrine environment, particularly progesterone, which suppresses the immune system (Lewis, 2003). In the puerperium may occur uterine disorders, such as retained placenta, puerperal metritis, clinical and subclinical endometritis and pyometra, this review was proposed a study of the immunology involved in uterine health and a better understanding of uterine disorders, using the model of Sheldon et al. al, (2006) for classification of diseases, and a study of best treatment options and discussion about its functionality, because a lot of controversy among authors about choosing a treatment and another and between treated and untreated
