The aim of this study was to evaluate the venous blood lactate concentration in sheep and newborn lambs immediately after normal delivery. We used 14 ewes, nine and four Suffolk crossbred lambs and 20 healthy newborns (males and females). The effect of gender, race and number of lambs per birth was investigated, as well as the possible correlation between the concentration of maternal and newborn lactate. There was no difference between males and females or in relation to race (and Suffolk crossbred); however the concentration of lactate was higher in twin or triplet lambs when compared to single lambs. There was a positive correlation between the maternal and newborn concentration and the higher the concentration of lactate, the greater the concentration in the lamb immediately after normal delivery. The results of this study provide a base from which to compare the blood lactate levels in lambs in critical condition.

The purpose was to evaluate the reproductive performance of woolless ewes due to the feeding management of offsprings and weaning age in addition to measuring the effect of gender on weight gain of lambs. Sixty-four Santa Inês crossbred ewes were distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial 4 x 2 x 2 - four weaning ages (56, 70, 84 and 98 days), sex and feeding management of the offspring, each treatment with four replications. The ewes were managed with the offsprings at the foot in 14 paddocks of 1,5 or 2,0 hectares, formed with Brachiaria humidícola. The offsprings were born by single birth, of Santa Inês pure of origin (PO). After the weaning of all groups, sixty-four lambs (32 males and 32 females) were randomly assigned in individual stalls and confined for 30 days. The comparison of the parameters was carried out by the adjustment of the simple linear regression model. It was verified over time addiction of the offspring feed management of + 3,7% (P<0,05) for the calving intervals and of + 1,4% (P<0,05) for the service period. There was increasing linear effect (P<0,05) of weaning age on calving intervals and service period. It was verified over time, addiction of the offspring sex of + 2,0% (P<0,05) for the calving intervals and + 0,8% (P<0,05) for the ewes service period. It was observed over time addiction of sex of + 35,2% and + 36,9% (P<0,05), respectively, for the daily weight gain of lambs from birth to weaning and post-weaning in feedlot. The supplementation of the offspring in private feeder and the anticipation of the weaning age reduce the calving intervals and the service period of woolless ewes in Brachiaria humidicula pasture. The offspring sex is the source of variation in the analysis of reproductive efficiency of ewe's mat rices and in the weight gain of Santa Inês crossbred lambs from birth to weaning, and after weaning.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the ingestive behavior of feedlot lambs fed with an exclusive diet of concentrate with different percentages of protein (14, 16, 18, and 20%). A total of twenty four Santa Inês crossbred lambs, not castrated, with approximately 180 days of age, average live weight of 25kg, confined, in a completely randomized design, with four treatments and six repetitions. The time spent on feeding decreased linearly in 0.20 hours/day for each 1% increasing in protein percentage in the diet, the idleness increased linearly in 0.25 hours/day, and the total chewing decreased linearly in 0.25 hours/day. The increase in the protein percentage in the diet increased the feed efficiency linearly (kg DM and NDF/hour) in 0.038 and 0.005kg/hour, respectively, for DM and NDF fractions. However, the intake of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), the rumination efficiency (kg DM and NDF/hour), as well as the period (nº /day) and the time (min) spent on feeding, ruminating and idling were not influenced by different protein percentages in the diet.

This work aimed to evaluate the carcass yields, commercial cuts and non-carcass components of Santa Inês lambs fed with 30, 40, 50 or 60% of oldman saltbush hay with concentrated. Were used 32 castrated lambs at 8 months old and initial body weight of 22 + 1.97kg, housed individually and slaughtered after 60 days of feedlot. The weights of hot and cold carcass decreased linearly with the inclusion of saltbush hay in the diet, however, there was no effect for true carcass yield and commercial cuts: shoulder (19.26%), neck (8.52%) ribs (26.57%) and leg (33.88%). There was a linear decrease for ribeye area and fat thickness when the level of hay in the diet increased. The weights and yields of skin, liver, heart, kidneys with perirenal fat, omental and mesenteric fats decreased linearly with the inclusion of hay in the diet, while the content (%) of gastrointestinal tract increased. The increased proportion of saltbush hay in the diet of lambs provided adequate true carcass yield and commercial cuts, however, reduces the ribeye area and fat thickness, important measurements in the qualitative evaluation of the lamb's carcass.

Aimed to analyze the economic feasibility of replacing hay Cynodon spp by hay banana crop residues in diet of lambs. We used 25 Santa Inês lambs, with an average age of five months and an average initial weight of 26.5kg, distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments (40% hay Cynodon spp. + 60% concentrate, 20% hay banana leaf and 20% of Cynodon spp. + 60% concentrate, 40% of banana leaf hay + 60% concentrate, 20% hay pseudostem of banana and 20% of Cynodon spp. + 60% concentrate, 40% hay pseudostem of banana + 60% concentrate). After 69 days of experiment the animals were slaughtered. Possession of the cost of each diet and consumption of animals was calculated economic feasibility. Treatment with 40% of banana leaf hay + 60% concentrate showed the best economic indicators, based on the highest net income, the higher rate of return to higher profitability and marketing of live animals or slaughtered. The inclusion of banana crop residues in the diet of growing lambs increases the economic viability of the activity.
