The Code for Sustainable Homes (the Code) will require new homes in the United Kingdom to be ‘zero carbon’ from 2016. Drawing upon an evolutionary innovation perspective, this paper contributes to a gap in the literature by investigating which low and zero carbon technologies are actually being used by house builders, rather than the prevailing emphasis on the potentiality of these technologies. Using the results from a questionnaire three empirical contributions are made. First, house builders are selecting a narrow range of technologies. Second, these choices are made to minimise the disruption to their standard design and production templates (SDPTs). Finally, the coalescence around a small group of technologies is expected to intensify with solar-based technologies predicted to become more important. This paper challenges the dominant technical rationality in the literature that technical efficiency and cost benefits are the primary drivers for technology selection. These drivers play an important role but one which is mediated by the logic of maintaining the SDPTs of the house builders. This emphasises the need for construction diffusion of innovation theory to be problematized and developed within the context of business and market regimes constrained and reproduced by resilient technological trajectories.

Given the decision to include small-scale sinks projects implemented by low-income communities in the clean development mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol, the paper explores some of the basic governance conditions that such carbon forestry projects will have to meet if they are to be successfully put in practice. To date there are no validated small-scale sinks projects and investors have shown little interest in financing such projects, possibly to due to the risks and uncertainties associated with sinks projects. Some suggest however, that carbon has the potential to become a serious commodity on the world market, thus governance over ownership, rights and responsibilities merit discussion. Drawing on the interdisciplinary development, as well as from the literature on livelihoods and democratic decentralization in forestry, the paper explores how to adapt forest carbon projects to the realities encountered in the local context. It also highlights the importance of capitalizing on synergies with other rural development strategies, ensuring stakeholder participation by working with accountable, representative local organizations, and creating flexible and adaptive project designs.

Low-frequency noise in an electrolyte-insulator- semiconductor (EIS) structure functionalized with multilayers of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is studied. The noise spectral density exhibits 1/f(gamma) dependence with the power factor of gamma approximate to 0.8 and gamma = 0.8-1.8 for the bare and functionalized EIS sensor, respectively. The gate-voltage noise spectral density is practically independent of the pH value of the solution and increases with increasing gate voltage or gate-leakage current. It has been revealed that functionalization of an EIS structure with a PAMAM/SWNTs multilayer leads to an essential reduction of the 1/f noise. To interpret the noise behavior in bare and functionalized EIS devices, a gate-current noise model for capacitive EIS structures based on an equivalent flatband-voltage fluctuation concept has been developed.

The anodic oxidation of ascorbic acid on a ruthenium oxide hexacyanoferrate modified electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. On this modified surface, the electrocatalytic process allows the determination of ascorbic acid to be performed at 0.0 V and pH 6.9 with a limit of detection of 2.2 mu M in a flow injection configuration. Under this experimental condition, no interference from glucose, nitrite and uric acid was noticed. Lower detection limit values were obtained by measuring flow injection analysis (FIA) responses at 0.4 V (0.14 mu M), but a concurrent loss of selectivity is expected at this more positive potential. Under optimal FIA operating conditions, the linear response of the method was extended up to 1 mM ascorbic acid. The repeatability of the method for injections of a 1.0 mM ascorbic acid solution was 2.0% (n=10). The usefulness of the method was demonstrated by an addition-recovery experiment with urine samples and the recovered values were in the 98-104% range. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated on carbon-supported Pt-Co nanoparticle electrocatalysts with low Pt content in alkaline electrolyte. High resolution transmission electron microscopy, In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis evidenced large structural differences of the Pt-Co particles depending oil the route of the catalyst synthesis. It was demonstrated that although the Pt-Co materials contain low amounts of Pt, they show very good activities when the particles are formed by a Pt-rich shell and a Pt-Co core, which was obtained after submitting the electrocatalyst to a potential cycling in acid electrolyte. The high activity of this material was due to a major contribution from its higher surface area, as a result of the leaching of the Co atoms from the particle Surface. Furthermore, its high activity was ascribed to a minor contribution from the electronic interaction of the Pt atoms, at the particle surface, and the Co atoms located in the beneath layer, lowering the Pt cl-band center. As these electrocatalysts presented high activity for the ORR with low Pt content, the cost of the fuel cell cathodes could be lowered considerably. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fiber reinforced polymer composites have been widely applied in the aeronautical field. However, composite processing, which uses unlocked molds, should be avoided in view of the tight requirements and also due to possible environmental contamination. To produce high performance structural frames meeting aeronautical reproducibility and low cost criteria, the Brazilian industry has shown interest to investigate the resin transfer molding process (RTM) considering being a closed-mold pressure injection system which allows faster gel and cure times. Due to the fibrous composite anisotropic and non homogeneity characteristics, the fatigue behavior is a complex phenomenon quite different from to metals materials crucial to be investigated considering the aeronautical application. Fatigue sub-scale specimens of intermediate modulus carbon fiber non-crimp multi-axial reinforcement and epoxy mono-component system composite were produced according to the ASTM 3039 D. Axial fatigue tests were carried out according to ASTM D 3479. A sinusoidal load of 10 Hz frequency and load ratio R = 0.1. It was observed a high fatigue interval obtained for NCF/RTM6 composites. Weibull statistical analysis was applied to describe the failure probability of materials under cyclic loads and fractures pattern was observed by scanning electron microscopy. A highly sensitive amperometric biosensor for determination of carbamate pesticides directly in water, fruit and vegetable samples has been evaluated, electrochemically characterized and optimized. The biosensor strip was fabricated in screen printed technique on a ceramic support using silver-based paste for reference electrode, and platinum-based paste for working and auxiliary electrodes. The working electrode was modified by a layer of carbon paste mixed with cobalt(II) phthalocyanine and acetylcellulose. Cholinesterase (ChE) enzymes with low enzymatic charge were immobilized on this layer. The operational simplicity of the biosensor consists in that a small drop (similar to 50 mu l) of substrate or sample is deposited on a horizontally positioned biosensor strip representing the microelectrochemical cell. The working potential of the biosensor was 370 mV versus Ag/AgI on a ship reference electrode preventing the interference of electroactive species which are oxidable at more positive potentials. The biosensor was applied to investigate the degradation of two reference ChE inhibitors in freeze dried water under different storage conditions and for direct determination of some N-methylcarbamates (NMCs) in fruit and vegetable samples at ppb concentration levels without any sample pretreatment. A comparison of the obtained results for the total carbamate concentration was done against those obtained using HPLC measurements. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Supermartensitic stainless steels (SMSSs) are a new generation of the classic 13%Cr martensitic steels, lower in carbon and with additional alloying of nickel and molybdenum offering better weldabilty and low temperature toughness. Several works have shown that plasma nitriding and nitrocarburising of stainless steels at low temperatures produces a hard surface layer which results in increased wear resistance. In this work, SMSS samples were plasma nitrided and nitrocarburised at 400, 450 and 500 °C. The plasma treated SMSS samples were characterised by means of optical microscopy, microhardness, X-ray diffraction and dry wear tests. The thickness of the layers produced increases as temperature is raised, for both plasma nitriding and nitrocarburising. X-ray diffraction demonstrates that the chromium nitride content grows with temperature for nitriding and nitrocarburising, which also showed increasing content of iron and chromium carbides with temperature. After plasma treating, it was found that the wear volume decreases for all temperatures and the wear resistance increased as the treatment temperature was raised. The main wear mechanism observed for both treated and untreated samples was grooving abrasion. © 2012 IHTSE Partnership Published by Maney on behalf of the Partnership.

A comparative study using different mass proportions of WO3/C (1%, 5%, 10% and 15%) for H2O2 electrogeneration and subsequent phenol degradation was performed. To include the influence of the carbon substrate and the preparation methods, all synthesis parameters were evaluated. The WO3/C materials were prepared by a modified polymeric precursor method (PPM) and the sol-gel method (SGM) on Vulcan XC 72R and Printex L6 carbon supports, verifying the most efficient metal/carbon proportion. The materials were physically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The XRD and the XPS techniques identified just one phase containing WO3 and elevated oxygen concentration on carbon with the presence of WO3. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), studied by the rotating ring-disk electrode technique, showed that WO3/C material with the lowest tungsten content (1% WO3/C), supported on Vulcan XC 72R and prepared by SGM, was the most promising electrocatalyst for H2O2 electrogeneration. This material was then analyzed using a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) and 585mgL-1 of H2O2 was produced in acid media. This GDE was employed as a working electrode in an electrochemical cell to promote phenol degradation by an advanced oxidative process. The most efficient method applied was the photo-electro-Fenton; this method allowed for 65% degradation and 11% mineralization of phenol during a 2-h period. Following 12h of exhaustive electrolysis using the photo-electro-Fenton method, the total degradation of phenol was observed after 4h and the mineralization of phenol approached 75% after 12h. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The increasing demand for electrical energy and the difficulties involved in installing new transmission lines presents a global challenge. Transmission line cables need to conduct more current, which creates the problem of excessive cable sag and limits the distance between towers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new cables that have low thermal expansion coefficients, low densities, and high resistance to mechanical stress and corrosion. Continuous fiber-reinforced polymers are now widely used in many industries, including electrical utilities, and provide properties that are superior to those of traditional ACSR (aluminum conductor steel reinforced) cables. Although composite core cables show good performance in terms of corrosion, the contact of carbon fibers with aluminum promotes galvanic corrosion, which compromises mechanical performance. In this work, three different fiber coatings were tested (phenol formaldehyde resin, epoxy-based resin, and epoxy resin with polyester braiding), with measurements of the galvanic current. The use of epoxy resin combined with polyester braiding provided the best inhibition of galvanic corrosion. Investigation of thermal stability revealed that use of phenol formaldehyde resin resulted in a higher glass transition temperature. On the other hand, a post-cure process applied to epoxy-based resin enabled it to achieve glass transition temperatures of up to 200 degrees C. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A comprehensive study of pulsed nitriding in AISI H13 tool steel at low temperature (400 degrees C) is reported for several durations. X-ray diffraction results reveal that a nitrogen enriched compound (epsilon-Fe2-3N, iron nitride) builds up on the surface within the first process hour despite the low process temperature. Beneath the surface, X-ray Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS) in a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) indicates relatively higher nitrogen concentrations (up to 12 at.%) within the diffusion layer while microscopic nitrides are not formed and existing carbides are not dissolved. Moreover, in the diffusion layer, nitrogen is found to be dispersed in the matrix and forming nanosized precipitates. The small coherent precipitates are observed by High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) while the presence of nitrogen is confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Hardness tests show that the material hardness increases linearly with the nitrogen concentration, reaching up to 14.5 GPa in the surface while the Young Modulus remains essentially unaffected. Indeed, the original steel microstructure is well preserved even in the nitrogen diffusion layer. Nitrogen profiles show a case depth of about similar to 43 mu m after nine hours of nitriding process. These results indicate that pulsed plasma nitriding is highly efficient even at such low temperatures and that at this process temperature it is possible to form thick and hard nitrided layers with satisfactory mechanical properties. This process can be particularly interesting to enhance the surface hardness of tool steels without exposing the workpiece to high temperatures and altering its bulk microstructure. A comparative study using different proportions of CeO2/C (4%, 9% and 13% CeO2) was performed to produce H2O2, a reagent used in the oxidation of organic pollutants and in electro-Fenton reactions for the production of the hydroxyl radical (OH center dot), a strong oxidant agent used in the electrochemical treatment of aqueous wastewater. The CeO2/C materials were prepared by a modified polymeric precursor method (PPM). X-ray diffraction analysis of the CeO2/C prepared by the PPM identified two phases. CeO2 and CeO2. The average size of the crystallites in these materials was close to 7 nm. The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were evaluated by the rotating ring-disk electrode technique. The results showed that the 4% CeO2/C prepared by the PPM was the best composite for the production of H2O2 in a 1 mol L-1 NaOH electrolyte solution. For this material, the number of electrons transferred and the H2O2 percentage efficiency were 3.1 and 44%, respectively. The ring-current of the 4% CeO2/C was higher than that of Vulcan carbon, the reference material for H2O2 production, which produced 41% H2O2 and transferred 3.1 electrons per molecule of oxygen. The overpotential for this reaction on the ceria-based catalyst was substantially lower (approximately 200 mV), demonstrating the higher catalytic performance of this material. Gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) containing the catalyst were used to evaluate the real amount of H2O2 produced during exhaustive electrolysis. The 4% CeO2/C GDE produced 871 mg L-1 of H2O2, whereas the Vulcan carbon GDE produced a maximum amount of only 407 mg L-1. Thus, the 4% CeO2/C electrocatalyst prepared by the PPM is a promising material for H2O2 electrogeneration in alkaline media. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Resistance to corrosion, high tensile strength, low weight, easiness and rapidity of application, are characteristics that have contributed to the spread of the strengthening technique characterized by bonding of carbon fibers reinforced polymer (CFRP). This research aimed to develop an innovate strengthening method for RC beams, based on a high performance cement-based composite of steel fibers (macro + microfibers) to be applied as a transition layer. The purpose of this transition layer is better control the cracking of concrete and detain or even avoid premature debonding of strengthening. A preliminary study in short beams molded with steel fibers and strengthened with CFRP sheet, was carried out where was verified that the conception of the transition layer is valid. Tests were developed to get a cement-based composite with adequate characteristics to constitute the layer transition. Results showed the possibility to develop a high performance material with a pseudo strain-hardening behavior, high strength and fracture toughness. The application of the strengthening on the transition layer surface had significantly to improve the performance levels of the strengthened beam. It summary, it was proven the efficiency of the new strengthening technique, and much information can be used as criteria of projects for repaired and strengthened structures.

The research reported in this manuscript concerns the structural characterization of graphene membranes and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The experimental investigation was performed using a wide range of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, from conventional imaging and diffraction, to advanced interferometric methods, like electron holography and Geometric Phase Analysis (GPA), using a low-voltage optical set-up, to reduce radiation damage in the samples. Electron holography was used to successfully measure the mean electrostatic potential of an isolated SWCNT and that of a mono-atomically thin graphene crystal. The high accuracy achieved in the phase determination, made it possible to measure, for the first time, the valence-charge redistribution induced by the lattice curvature in an individual SWCNT. A novel methodology for the 3D reconstruction of the waviness of a 2D crystal membrane has been developed. Unlike other available TEM reconstruction techniques, like tomography, this new one requires processing of just a single HREM micrograph. The modulations of the inter-planar distances in the HREM image are measured using Geometric Phase Analysis, and used to recover the waviness of the crystal. The method was applied to the case of a folded FGC, and a height variation of 0.8 nm of the surface was successfully determined with nanometric lateral resolution. The adhesion of SWCNTs to the surface of graphene was studied, mixing shortened SWCNTs of different chiralities and FGC membranes. The spontaneous atomic match of the two lattices was directly imaged using HREM, and we found that graphene membranes act as tangential nano-sieves, preferentially grafting achiral tubes to their surface.
