The direct evidence for the existence of intra-molecular C-F center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen bond in organofluorine molecules, in the liquid state, is derived using NMR spectroscopy by the detection of long range interactions among fluorine, nitrogen and hydrogen atoms. The present study reports the determination of the relative signs and magnitudes of through space and through bond couplings to draw unambiguous evidence on the existence of weak molecular interactions involving organic fluorine. It is a simple, easy to implement, N-15 natural abundant two dimensional heteronuclear N-15-H-1 double quantum-single quantum correlation experiment. The existence of intra-molecular hydrogen bond is conclusively established in the investigated molecules. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Template-assisted formation of multicomponent Pd6 coordination prisms and formation of their self-templated triply interlocked Pd12 analogues in the absence of an external template have been established in a single step through Pd?N/Pd?O coordination. Treatment of cis-[Pd(en)(NO3)2] with K3tma and linear pillar 4,4'-bpy (en=ethylenediamine, H3tma=benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid, 4,4'-bpy=4,4'-bipyridine) gave intercalated coordination cage [{Pd(en)}6(bpy)3(tma)2]2[NO3]12 (1) exclusively, whereas the same reaction in the presence of H3tma as an aromatic guest gave a H3tma-encapsulating non-interlocked discrete Pd6 molecular prism [{Pd(en)}6(bpy)3(tma)2(H3tma)2][NO3]6 (2). Though the same reaction using cis-[Pd(NO3)2(pn)] (pn=propane-1,2-diamine) instead of cis-[Pd(en)(NO3)2] gave triply interlocked coordination cage [{Pd(pn)}6(bpy)3(tma)2]2[NO3]12 (3) along with non-interlocked Pd6 analogue [{Pd(pn)}6(bpy)3(tma)2](NO3)6 (3'), and the presence of H3tma as a guest gave H3tma-encapsulating molecular prism [{Pd(pn)}6(bpy)3(tma)2(H3tma)2][NO3]6 (4) exclusively. In solution, the amount of 3' decreases as the temperature is decreased, and in the solid state 3 is the sole product. Notably, an analogous reaction using the relatively short pillar pz (pz=pyrazine) instead of 4,4'-bpy gave triply interlocked coordination cage [{Pd(pn)}6(pz)3(tma)2]2[NO3]12 (5) as the single product. Interestingly, the same reaction using slightly more bulky cis-[Pd(NO3)2(tmen)] (tmen=N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylene diamine) instead of cis-[Pd(NO3)2(pn)] gave non-interlocked [{Pd(tmen)}6(pz)3(tma)2][NO3]6 (6) exclusively. Complexes 1, 3, and 5 represent the first examples of template-free triply interlocked molecular prisms obtained through multicomponent self-assembly. Formation of the complexes was supported by IR and multinuclear NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopy. Formation of guest-encapsulating complexes (2 and 4) was confirmed by 2D DOSY and ROESY NMR spectroscopic analyses, whereas for complexes 1, 3, 5, and 6 single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques unambiguously confirmed their formation. The gross geometries of H3tma-encapsulating complexes 2 and 4 were obtained by universal force field (UFF) simulations.

Crystals of a new nonlinear optical (NLO) material, viz., L-asparagine-L-tartaric acid (LALT)(1) were grown by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution containing equimolar concentrations of L-asparagine and t-tartaric acid. The structure of the title compound which crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P2(1) consists of a molecule of L-asparagine and a molecule of free L-tartaric acid both of which are interlinked by three varieties of H-bonding interactions namely O-H center dot center dot center dot O, N-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot O. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum of 1 reveals its transparent nature while the vibrational spectra confirm the presence of the functional groups in 1. The thermal stability and second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of 1 were investigated. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the growth kinetics of nanoclusters in solution. There are two generic factors that drive growth: (a) reactions that produce the nanomaterial; and (b) diffusion of the nanomaterial due to chemical-potential gradients. We model the growth kinetics of ZnO nanoparticles via coupled dynamical equations for the relevant order parameters, We study this model both analytically and numerically. We find that there is a crossover in thenanocluster growth law: from L(t) similar to t(1/2) in the reaction-controlled regime to L(t) t(1/3) in the diffusion-controlled regime.

The chemistry underlying the aqueous dispersibility of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) is a key consideration in the design of solution processing techniques for the preparation of processable graphene sheets. Here, we use zeta potential measurements, pH titrations, and infrared spectroscopy to establish the chemistry underlying the aqueous dispersibility of GO and r-GO sheets at different values of pH. We show that r-GO sheets have ionizable groups with a single pK value (8.0) while GO sheets have groups that are more acidic (pK = 4.3), in addition to groups with pK values of 6.6 and 9.0. Infrared spectroscopy has been used to follow the sequence of ionization events. In both GO and r-GO sheets, it is ionization of the carboxylic groups that is primarily responsible for the build up of charge, but on GO sheets, the presence of phenolic and hydroxyl groups in close proximity to the carboxylic groups lowers the pK(a) value by stabilizing the carboxylate anion, resulting in superior water dispersibility.

An analogue of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) luminophore crystallizes from a methanol solution impregnated with dichloromethane, into a pair of chiral crystals. Thermal analysis, fluorescence emission studies, and crystal packing analysis show that the two crystals are different materials. The two polymorphs arise from the rotation of a monosubstituted benzene ring about a C-N bond which results in the formation of two strong bifurcated C-H center dot center dot center dot O intermolecular bonds to oxygen O(6). The color difference has been ascribed to a difference in the packing of the two crystal forms. Theoretical studies supported by low temperature NMR show low kinetic energy barriers (similar to 10 kJ mol(-1)) separating the asymmetric units of the two crystal structures, suggesting that the driving force for the polymorphism could be the result of packing of two different asymmetric units.

Nanoparticles probably constitute the largest class of nanomaterials. Nanoparticles of several inorganic materials have been prepared by employing a variety of synthetic strategies. Besides synthesizing nanoparticles, there has been considerable effort to selectively prepare nanoparticles of different shapes. In view of the great interest in inorganic nanoparticles evinced in the last few years, we have prepared this perspective on the present status of the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles. This article includes a brief discussion of methods followed by reports on the synthesis of nanoparticles of various classes of inorganic materials such as metals, alloys, oxides chalcogenides and pnictides. A brief section on core-shell nanoparticles is also included.

Dielectric dispersion and NMRD experiments have revealed that a significant fraction of water molecules in the hydration shell of various proteins do not exhibit any slowing down of dynamics. This is usually attributed to the presence of the hydrophobic residues (HBR) on the surface, although HBRs alone cannot account for the large amplitude of the fast component. Solvation dynamics experiments and also computer simulation studies, on the other hand, repeatedly observed the presence of a non-negligible slow component. Here we show, by considering three well-known proteins (lysozyme, myoglobin and adelynate kinase), that the fast component arises partly from the response of those water molecules that are hydrogen bonded with the backbone oxygen (BBO) atoms. These are structurally and energetically less stable than those with the side chain oxygen (SCO) atoms. In addition, the electrostatic interaction energy distribution (EIED) of individual water molecules (hydrogen bonded to SCO) with side chain oxygen atoms shows a surprising two peak character with the lower energy peak almost coincident with the energy distribution of water hydrogen bonded to backbone oxygen atoms (BBO). This two peak contribution appears to be quite general as we find it for lysozyme, myoglobin and adenylate kinase (ADK). The sharp peak of EIED at small energy (at less than 2 k(B)T) for the BBO atoms, together with the first peak of EIED of SCO and the HBRs on the protein surface, explain why a large fraction (similar to 80%) of water in the protein hydration layer remains almost as mobile as bulk water Significant slowness arises only from the hydrogen bonds that populate the second peak of EIED at larger energy (at about 4 k(B)T). Thus, if we consider hydrogen bond interaction alone, only 15-20% of water molecules in the protein hydration layer can exhibit slow dynamics, resulting in an average relaxation time of about 5-10 ps. The latter estimate assumes a time constant of 20-100 ps for the slow component. Interestingly, relaxation of water molecules hydrogen bonded to back bone oxygen exhibit an initial component faster than the bulk, suggesting that hydrogen bonding of these water molecules remains frustrated. This explanation of the heterogeneous and non-exponential dynamics of water in the hydration layer is quantitatively consistent with all the available experimental results, and provides unification among diverse features.

Three new solution processable quinoxaline based donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type molecules have been synthesized for application in field effect transistors. These molecules were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and cyclic voltammetry. DFT calculation gives deeper insight into the electronic structure of these molecules. The crystallinity and morphology features of thin film were investigated using X-ray diffraction. These molecules show liquid crystalline phase confirmed by DSC and optical polarizing microscopy. Investigation of their field effect transistor performance indicated that these molecules exhibited p-type mobility up to 9.7 x 10 (4) cm(2) V (1) s (1) and on/off ratio of 10(4). The metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have evolved to be an important family and a corner stone for research in the area of inorganic chemistry. The progress made since 2000 has attracted researchers from other disciplines to actively engage themselves in this area. This cooperative synergy of different scientific believes have provided important edge and spread to the chemistry of metal-organic frameworks. The ease of synthesis coupled with the observation of properties in the areas of catalysis, sorption, separation, luminescence, bioactivity, magnetism, etc., are a proof of this synergism. In this article, we present the recent developments in this area.

Two new solution processable, low band gap donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers (P1 and P2) comprising a cyclopentac] thiophene (CPT) based oligomers as donors and benzoc]1,2,5] selenadiazole (BDS) and 2-dodecyl1,2,3]-benzotriazole (BTAz) as acceptors were synthesized and characterized and their field effect transistor properties were studied. The internal charge transfer interaction between the electron-donating CPT based oligothiophene and the electron-accepting BDS or BTAz unit effectively reduces the band gap in polymers to 1.3 and 1.66 eV with low lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). The absorption spectrum of P1 was found to be more red shifted than that of P2 because of incorporation of the more electron-withdrawing BDS unit. The color of neutral P1 was found to be green in both solution and film states with two major bands in the absorption spectra; however, neutral P2 revealed one dominant absorption exhibiting red color in both solution and film state which could be attributed to the less electron-withdrawing effect of the BTAz unit. The polymers were further characterized by GPC, TGA, DSC and cyclic voltammetry. P1 and P2 exhibited charge carrier mobilities as high as 9 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and 2.56 x 10(-3) cm 2 V-1 s(-1), respectively with the current on/off ratio (I-on/I-off) in the order of 10(2).

The solution of a bivariate population balance equation (PBE) for aggregation of particles necessitates a large 2-d domain to be covered. A correspondingly large number of discretized equations for particle populations on pivots (representative sizes for bins) are solved, although at the end only a relatively small number of pivots are found to participate in the evolution process. In the present work, we initiate solution of the governing PBE on a small set of pivots that can represent the initial size distribution. New pivots are added to expand the computational domain in directions in which the evolving size distribution advances. A self-sufficient set of rules is developed to automate the addition of pivots, taken from an underlying X-grid formed by intersection of the lines of constant composition and constant particle mass. In order to test the robustness of the rule-set, simulations carried out with pivotwise expansion of X-grid are compared with those obtained using sufficiently large fixed X-grids for a number of composition independent and composition dependent aggregation kernels and initial conditions. The two techniques lead to identical predictions, with the former requiring only a fraction of the computational effort. The rule-set automatically reduces aggregation of particles of same composition to a 1-d problem. A midway change in the direction of expansion of domain, effected by the addition of particles of different mean composition, is captured correctly by the rule-set. The evolving shape of a computational domain carries with it the signature of the aggregation process, which can be insightful in complex and time dependent aggregation conditions. We have investigated quadratic nonlinearity (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios (D and D', respectively) of a series of 1:1 complexes of tropyliumtetrafluoroborate as a cation and methyl-substituted benzenes as pi-donors by making polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements in solution. The measured D and D' values are much lower than the values expected from a typical sandwich or a T-shaped geometry of a complex. In the cation-pi complexes studied here, the D value varies from 1.36 to 1.46 and D' from 1.62 to 1.72 depending on the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. In order to probe it further, beta, D and D' were computed using the Zerner intermediate neglect of differential overlap-correction vector self-consistent reaction field technique including single and double configuration interactions in the absence and presence of BF4- anion. In the absence of the anion, the calculated value of D varies from 4.20 to 4.60 and that of D' from 2.45 to 2.72 which disagree with experimental values. However, by arranging three cation-pi BF4- complexes in a trigonal symmetry, the computed values are brought to agreement with experiments. When such an arrangement was not considered, the calculated beta values were lower than the experimental values by more than a factor of two. This unprecedented influence of the otherwise ``unimportant'' anion in solution on the beta value and depolarization ratios of these cation-pi complexes is highlighted and emphasized in this paper. Two different experimental studies of polymer dynamics based on single-molecule fluorescence imaging have recently found evidence of heterogeneities in the widths of the putative tubes that surround filaments of F-actin during their motion in concentrated solution. In one J. Glaser, D. Chakraborty, K. Kroy, I. Lauter, M. Degawa, N. Kirchesner, B. Hoffmann, R. Merkel, and M. Giesen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 037801 (2010)], the observations were explained in terms of the statistics of a worm-like chain confined to a potential determined self-consistently by a binary collision approximation, and in the other B. Wang, J. Guan, S. M. Anthony, S. C. Bae, K. S. Schweizer, and S. Granick, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 118301 (2010)], they were explained in terms of the scaling properties of a random fluid of thin rods. In this paper, we show, using an exact path integral calculation, that the distribution of the length-averaged transverse fluctuations of a harmonically confined weakly bendable rod (one possible realization of a semiflexible chain in a tube), is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data, although it is qualitatively different in analytic structure from the earlier theoretical predictions. We also show that similar path integral techniques can be used to obtain an exact expression for the time correlation function of fluctuations in the tube cross section. We report the fabrication of free-standing flexible inorganic/organic hybrid structures by exfoliating ZnO nanostructured films from the flat indium tin oxide (ITO)/silicon/sapphire substrates using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). Strong interaction between ZnO and PEDOT: PSS and the thermomechanical response of PEDOT: PSS are the key issues for the exfoliation to prevail. The performance of the free-standing hybrid structures as rectifiers and photodetectors is better as compared to ITO supported hybrid structures. It is also shown that device properties of hybrid structures can be tuned by using different electrode materials. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4729550]
