L'home que venia de Natzaret. El que avui podem saber de Jesus

Quina mena d'home era Jesús? Menut o espigat? Tenia el parlar sec, el gest franc? Era calb, duia barba?... Esperava que el reialme arribaria de seguida? Va patir, algun dia, el sentiment de fracàs? Imaginà que arribaria l'Església?L'autor manlleva els elements cabdals de les investigacions històriques més recents sobre Jesús i en fa un retrat molt particular: no és un retrat inèdit, sinó un retrat en què el rostre de Jesús es destria de moltes imatges amb què sovint se l'ha confós. Escoltant les seves paràboles, assistint als seus miracles, seguint-lo en el seu camí de la creu, el lector és conduït a descobrir que en ell Déu s'ha fet proper als homes i els ha donat un centre nou a la seva història.

L'Home d'Orce: una controvèrsia pública

L’any 1983, el fragment de crani VM-0, trobat a Venta Micena (Orce, Granada), va ser atribuït al gènere Homo per Josep Gibert, Salvador Moyà-Solà i Jordi Agustí. Un any més tard, el mateix fragment va ser atribuït a Equus per altres investigadors mitjançant el diari El País. No és fins a tres anys més tard que es publica el primer article científic seguint aquesta atribució. Només Josep Gibert continua defensant el caràcter humà de VM-0, que mai serà totalment acceptat per la comunitat científica. Els mitjans de comunicació, concretament els diaris, esdevenen l’espai de debat científic. Aquest debat, i el gran rebombori que causen els diaris, tenen influència en el desenvolupament "normal" de la ciència.

Infections and functional impairment in nursing home residents: a reciprocal relationship.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship between infections and functional impairment in nursing home residents. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study (follow-up period, 6 months). SETTING: Thirty-nine nursing homes in western Switzerland. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1,324 residents aged 65 and older (mean age 85.7; 76.6% female) who agreed to participate, or their proxies, by oral informed consent. MEASUREMENTS: Functional status measured every 3 months. Two different outcomes were used: (a) functional decline defined as death or decreased function at follow-up and (b) functional status score using a standardized measure. RESULTS: At the end of follow-up, mortality was 14.6%, not different for those with and without infection (16.2% vs 13.1%, P=.11). During both 3-month periods, subjects with infection had higher odds of functional decline, even after adjustment for baseline characteristics and occurrence of a new illness (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=1.6, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.2-2.2, P=.002, and AOR=1.5, 95% CI=1.1-2.0, P=.008, respectively). The odds of decline increased in a stepwise fashion in patients with zero, one, and two or more infections. The analyses predicting functional status score (restricted to subjects who survived) gave similar results. A survival analysis predicting time to first infection confirmed a stepwise greater likelihood of infection in subjects with moderate and severe impairment at baseline than in subjects with no or mild functional impairment at baseline. CONCLUSION: Infections appear to be both a cause and a consequence of functional impairment in nursing home residents. Further studies should be undertaken to investigate whether effective infection control programs can also contribute to preventing functional decline, an important component of these residents' quality of life.

Reconsideration of dimensions and curve fitting practice in economics ellaborating on Georgescu-Roegen’s economic methodology

This paper is to examine the proper use of dimensions and curve fitting practices elaborating on Georgescu-Roegen’s economic methodology in relation to the three main concerns of his epistemological orientation. Section 2 introduces two critical issues in relation to dimensions and curve fitting practices in economics in view of Georgescu-Roegen’s economic methodology. Section 3 deals with the logarithmic function (ln z) and shows that z must be a dimensionless pure number, otherwise it is nonsensical. Several unfortunate examples of this analytical error are presented including macroeconomic data analysis conducted by a representative figure in this field. Section 4 deals with the standard Cobb-Douglas function. It is shown that the operational meaning cannot be obtained for capital or labor within the Cobb-Douglas function. Section 4 also deals with economists "curve fitting fetishism". Section 5 concludes thispaper with several epistemological issues in relation to dimensions and curve fitting practices in economics.

A Health Economics Model. The cost benefits of the Physical Activity Strategy for Northern Ireland - a summary of key findings

This summary report follows on from the publication of the Northern Ireland physical activity strategy in 1996 and the subsequent publication of the strategy action plan in 1998. Within this strategy action plan a recommendation was made for the health sector, that research should be carried out to evaluate and compare the cost of investing in physical activity programmes against the cost of treating preventable illness. To help in the development of this key area, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety's Economics Branch agreed to develop a model that would seek to establish the extent of avoidable deaths from physical inactivity and, as a consequence, the avoidable economic and healthcare costs for Northern Ireland.
