We present three measurements of the top-quark mass in the lepton plus jets channel with approximately 1.9 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector using quantities with minimal dependence on the jet energy scale. One measurement exploits the transverse decay length of b-tagged jets to determine a top-quark mass of 166.9+9.5-8.5 (stat) +/- 2.9 (syst) GeV/c2, and another the transverse momentum of electrons and muons from W-boson decays to determine a top-quark mass of 173.5+8.8-8.9 (stat) +/- 3.8 (syst) GeV/c2. These quantities are combined in a third, simultaneous mass measurement to determine a top-quark mass of 170.7 +/- 6.3 (stat) +/- 2.6 (syst) GeV/c2.

The International Large Detector (ILD) is a concept for a detector at the International Linear Collider, ILC. The ILC will collide electrons and positrons at energies of initially 500 GeV, upgradeable to 1 TeV. The ILC has an ambitious physics program, which will extend and complement that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A hallmark of physics at the ILC is precision. The clean initial state and the comparatively benign environment of a lepton collider are ideally suited to high precision measurements. To take full advantage of the physics potential of ILC places great demands on the detector performance. The design of ILD is driven by these requirements. Excellent calorimetry and tracking are combined to obtain the best possible overall event reconstruction, including the capability to reconstruct individual particles within jets for particle ow calorimetry. This requires excellent spatial resolution for all detector systems. A highly granular calorimeter system is combined with a central tracker which stresses redundancy and efficiency. In addition, efficient reconstruction of secondary vertices and excellent momentum resolution for charged particles are essential for an ILC detector. The interaction region of the ILC is designed to host two detectors, which can be moved into the beam position with a push-pull scheme. The mechanical design of ILD and the overall integration of subdetectors takes these operational conditions into account.

Manganese dioxide is known to be an important electroactive material for supercapacitors. Generally, delta-MnO2 is subjected to electrochemical characterization studies in aqueous electrolytes of Na2SO4. It exhibits capacitance behaviour in the potential range between 0 and 1.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode). In the present study, it is shown that delta-MnO2 exhibits capacitance behaviour in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolytes also. The suitable potential range in this electrolyte is also found to be 0-1.0 V. Specific capacitancemeasured in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolyte is 192 F g(-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data confirm that Sr2+ ions get inserted onto delta-MnO2 anoparticles. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. CeO2-SnO2 solid solution has been reported to possess high oxygen storage/release property which possibly originates from local structural distortion. We have performed first-principles based density functional calculations of Ce1-xSnxO2 structure (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 1) to understand its structural stability in fluorite in comparison to rutile structure of the other end-member SnO2, and studied the local structural distortion induced by the dopant Sn ion. Analysis of relative energies of fluorite and rutile phases of CeO2, SnO2, and Ce1-xSnxO2 indicates that fluorite structure is the most stable for Ce1-xSnxO2 solid solution. An analysis of local structural distortions reflected in phonon dispersion show that SnO2 in fluorite structure is highly unstable while CeO2 in rutile structure is only weakly unstable. Thus, Sn in Ce1-xSnxO2-fluorite structure is associated with high local structural distortion whereas Ce in Ce1-xSnxO2-rutile structure, if formed, will show only marginal local distortion. Determination of M-O (M=Ce or Sn) bond lengths and analysis of Born effective charges for the optimized structure of Ce1-xSnxO2 show that local coordination of these cations changes from ideal eightfold coordination expected of fluorite lattice to 4+4 coordination, leading to generation of long and short Ce-O and Sn-O bonds in the doped structure. Bond valence analyses for all ions show the presence of oxygen with bond valence similar to 1.84. These weakly bonded oxygen ions are relevant for enhanced oxygen storage/release properties observed in Ce1-xSnxO2 solid solution. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Direct contact mechanism in bioleaching implies prior mineral adhesion of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and subsequent enzymatic attack.Prior bacterial adaptation to sulfide mineral substrates influences bacterial ferrous ion oxidation rates. It is highly beneficial to understand major biooxidation mechanisms with reference to solution- and mineral-grown cells in order to optimize bioleaching reactions. For A. ferrooxidans grown in the presence of solid substrates such as sulfur, pyrite and chalcopyrite, bacterial adhesion is required for its enzymatic machinery to come into close contact for mineral dissolution. But when grown in solution substrate such as ferrous ions and thiosulfate, such an adhesion machinery is not required for substrate utilization. Proteinaceous compounds were observed on the surface of sulfur-grown cells. Such an induction of relatively hydrophobic proteins and down regulation of exposed polysaccharides leads to changes in cell surface chemistry. Sulfur-grown and pyrite- and chalcopyrite-grown bacterial cells were found to be more efficient in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite than those grown in the presence of ferrous ions and thiosulfate. Measurements of inclusive charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions are presented for proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the LHC commissioning in December 2009. For non-single-diffractive interactions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum is measured to be 0.46 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 0.9 TeV and 0.50 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 2.36 TeV, for pseudorapidities between -2.4 and +2.4. At these energies, the measured pseudorapidity densities in the central region, dN(charged)/d(eta) for |eta|

A detailed investigation of the hydrolysis of nickel in the lower concentration range has been made. The results have been analysed on the basis of 'Core + links' theory and on the assumption of the formation of one predominant complex. Evidence is obtained for the formation of Ni2 (OH)62- and its stability constant is calculated to be 1038.78

We report here a synthetic route for high-quality Mn-doped ZnSe nanocrystals using selenourea as a selenium source, avoiding the more conventional route-using tributylphosphine (TBP) that restricts the growth of spherical ZnSe nanocrystals below 5 nm in size, besides being highly toxic and pyrophoric. Spherical ZnSe nanocrystals with unprecendented sizes (up to 12 nm) are synthesized, the large size of the host helps to keep dopant ions well inside the nanocrystal leading to intense and stable dopant emission. Mn-doped ZnSe nanocrystals with more than 50% quantum yield (QY) are synthesized in this method and found to be stable both in aqueous and nonaqueous dispersions for months.

We present a simplified theory of the effective momentum mass (EMM) and ballistic current–voltage relationship in a degenerate two-folded highly asymmetric bilayer graphene nanoribbon. With an increase in the gap, the density-of-states in the lower set of subbands increases more than that of the upper set. This results in a phenomenological population inversion of carriers, which is reflected through a net negative differential conductance (NDC). It is found that with the increase of the ribbon width, the NDC also increases. The population inversion also signatures negative values of EMM above a certain ribbon-width for the lower set of subbands, which increases in a step-like manner with the applied longitudinal static bias. The well-known result for symmetric conditions has been obtained as a special case.

The move towards IT outsourcing is the first step towards an environment where compute infrastructure is treated as a service. In utility computing this IT service has to honor Service Level Agreements (SLA) in order to meet the desired Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Such an environment requires reliable services in order to maximize the utilization of the resources and to decrease the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Such reliability cannot come at the cost of resource duplication, since it increases the TCO of the data center and hence the cost per compute unit. We, in this paper, look into aspects of projecting impact of hardware failures on the SLAs and techniques required to take proactive recovery steps in case of a predicted failure. By maintaining health vectors of all hardware and system resources, we predict the failure probability of resources based on observed hardware errors/failure events, at runtime. This inturn influences an availability aware middleware to take proactive action (even before the application is affected in case the system and the application have low recoverability). The proposed framework has been prototyped on a system running HP-UX. Our offline analysis of the prediction system on hardware error logs indicate no more than 10% false positives. This work to the best of our knowledge is the first of its kind to perform an end-to-end analysis of the impact of a hardware fault on application SLAs, in a live system.

In an epidemiological study of symptomatic human rotaviruses in Mysore, India during 1993 and 1994, isolates MP409 and MP480 were isolated from two children suffering from severe, acute dehydrating diarrhea. Both isolates exhibited 'long' RNA pattern and subgroup I specificity suggesting the likelihood of their animal origin. Both isolates did not react with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) specific for serotypes G1 to G6 as well as CIO. To determine the genetic origin of these isolates, complete nucleotide sequences of genes encoding the outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7, nonstructural proteins NSP1 and NSP3 and viral enterotoxin protein NSP4 from MP409 and partial sequences of genes from MP480 were determined. Comparison of the 5' and 3' terminal sequences of 250 nucleotides revealed complete identity of the gene sequences in both strains suggesting that MP409 and MP480 are two different isolates of a single strain. Comparison of the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of VP4, VP7, NSP1 and NSP3 of MP409 with published sequences of strains belonging to different serotypes revealed that both outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 and NSP1 are highly related to the respective proteins from the P6[1], G8 type bovine rotavirus A5 isolated from a calf with diarrhoea in Thailand and that the NSP3 is highly homologous to that of bovine rotaviruses. The NSP 1 protein showed greatest sequence identity with NSP4s belonging to the KUN genetic group to which NSP4s from human G2 type strains and bovine rotaviruses belong. MP409 and MP480 likely signify interspecies transmission of P6[1], G8 type strains from cattle to humans and represent the first P6[1] type rotaviruses isolated in humans. These and our previous studies on the asymptomatic neonatal strain I321 are of evolutionary and epidemiological significance in the context of close association of majority of the Indian population with cattle.

ingle tract guanine residues can associate to form stable parallel quadruplex structures in the presence of certain cations. Nanosecond scale molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on fully solvated fibre model of parallel d(G(7)) quadruplex structures with Na+ or K+ ions coordinated in the cavity formed by the O6 atoms of the guanine bases. The AMBER 4.1 force field and Particle Mesh Ewald technique for electrostatic interactions have been used in all simulations. There quadruplex structures are stable during the simulation, with the middle four base tetrads showing root mean square deviation values between 0.5 to 0.8 Angstrom from the initial structure as well the high resolution crystal structure. Even in the absence of any coordinated ion in the initial structure, the G-quadruplex structure remains intact throughout the simulation. During the 1.1 ns MD simulation, one Nai counter ion from the solvent as well as several water molecules enter the central cavity to occupy the empty coordination sites within the parallel quadruplex and help stabilize the structure. Hydrogen bonding pattern depends on the nature of the coordinated ion, with the G-tetrad undergoing local structural variation to accommodate cations of different sizes. in the absence of any coordinated ion. due to strong mutual repulsion, O6 atoms within G-tetrad are forced farther apart from each other, which leads to a considerably different hydrogen bonding scheme within the G-tetrads and very favourable interaction energy between the guanine bases constituting a G-tetrad. However, a coordinated ion between G-tetrads provides extra stacking energy for the G-tetrads and makes the quadruplex structure more rigid. Na+ ions, within the quadruplex cavity, are more mobile than coordinated K+ ions. A number of hydrogen bonded water molecules are observed within the grooves of all quadruplex structures.

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the changes in water density and hydration characteristics of NaCl solutions confined in slit-shaped graphitic pores. Using a structural signature, we define the hydration limit as the salt concentration at which a sharp drop in the hydration number is observed. At small pores (H = 8.0-10 angstrom), confined water does not possess bulk-like features and remains in a layered arrangement between two surfaces. Despite this high degree of confinement, ions are able to form a quasi-2D hydration shell between two surfaces. Our results indicate the strong propensity of ions to form the first hydration shell, even under extremely confined aqueous environments. The hydration of ions is seen to weakly perturb the oxygen density distributions between two surfaces. The hydration number of Na+ reduces to about 4.15 at a pore width of H = 0.8 nm, when compared with the bulk hydration number of 6.25. At larger pore widths, above H = 16 angstrom, where bulk-like water densities are observed in the central regions of the pore, the hydration number is above 6.
