During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199, sediments were recovered from eight sites in the Central Pacific. Late Oligocene and early Miocene radiolarians are common to abundant and moderately well preserved in Cores 199-1218A-8H through 11H and 199-1219A-5H through 9H. More than 110 radiolarian species were encountered during this study. Of these species, 100 are identifiable forms and the rest are undescribed or unfamiliar forms. This report presents the relative abundances of described forms from the upper Oligocene to lower Miocene sediments.

Various types of trace fossils have been studied on radiographs of sediment cores from the Western Baltic since the early nineteen sixties. lnvestigations on the endo- und epifauna including their habitats and population densities carried out independently by biologists helped to identify the processes of their formation and classify the structures. Biogenic traces are ubiquitous in both sandy and muddy sediments of the Great Belt, where the bottom waters are weil oxygenated through inflows from the North Sea (through Kattegat-Skagerrak). Almost all types of bioturbation structures encountered in the Kiel Bay are also observed in a variety of shapes and forms, and can be considered as representative for the Western Baltic area. Polychaetes, bivalves and echinoderms were recorded at the sediment surface of the cores, and also in living positions in the sediment. The different types of burrows having distint outlines ('trace fossis'), and those having indistinct outlines ('biodeformational strctures'), and their varying abundance encountered in the area have been linked, wherever possible, to the sediment type, and to the macro-benthos.

Joint interpretation of magnetotelluric and geomagnetic depth sounding data in the western European Alps offer new insights into the conductivity structure of the Earth's crust and mantle. This first large scale electromagnetic study in the Alps covers a cross-section from Germany to northern Italy and shows the importance of the alpine mountain chain as an interrupter of continuous conductors. Poor data quality due to the highly crystalline underground is overcome by Remote Reference and Robust Processing techniques. 3d-forward-modelling reveals on the one hand interrupted dipping crustal conductors with maximum conductance of 4960 S and on the other hand a lithosphere thickening up to 208 km beneath the central western Alps. Graphite networks arising from Paleozoic sedimentary deposits are considered to be accountable for the occurrence of high conductivity and the distribution pattern of crustal conductors. The influence of huge sedimentary molasse basins on the electromagnetic data is suggested to be minor compared with the influence of crustal conductors. In conclusion, electromagnetic results can be attributed to the geological, tectonic and palaeogeographical background. Dipping direction (S-SE) and maximum angle (10.1°) of the northern crustal conductor reveal the main thrusting conditions beneath the Helvetic Alps whereas the existence of a crustal conductor in the Briançonnais supports theses about its palaeographic belonging to the Iberian Peninsula.

Benthic foraminiferal delta13C data from site 502 in the Caribbean Sea (sill depth ?1800 m) indicate that throughout the past 2.6 m.y., glacial delta13C values in the middepth Atlantic were higher during glaciations than interglaciations. This is interpreted as indicating a greater proportion of Upper North Atlantic Deep Water (UNADW) relative to southern source waters during glaciations. The contribution of UNADW during interglaciations to the middepth Atlantic remained approximately constant, and the contribution during glaciations may have been as much as 10 % higher in the late Pleistocene than in the late Pliocene. This small increase is in striking contrast to the much larger decrease in glacial Lower North Atlantic Deep Water (LNADW) contribution relative to southern sources, from about 80% to about 20%, that occurred over the past 2.6 m.y. Glacial intensification over the past 2.6 m.y. was probably coupled with a decrease in northward heat transport by the upper limb of the North Atlantic circulation cell, as was previously suggested on the basis of a LNADW record alone. Late Pleistocene (1 Ma-present) delta13C values in the Caribbean Sea were approximately 0.2? higher than they were from 2.6 to 2.0 Ma. The delta13C rise is not due to an increase in the mean ocean delta13C value, nor can it be entirely attributed to an increase in the proportion of high-delta13C source waters. An increase in the delta13C value of the surface source waters must have contributed to the delta13C rise.

In the cores obtained during Leg 134 of the Ocean Drilling Program, radiolarians occur intermittently and usually in a poor state of preservation, apparently as a result of the region having been at or near the boundary between the equatorial current system and the south-central Pacific water mass during most of the Cenozoic. A few well-preserved assemblages provide a record of the Quaternary forms, and some displaced middle and lower Eocene clasts preserve a record of radiolarians near that subepochal boundary. There are less satisfactory records of middle Miocene and early Miocene to late Oligocene forms.

It has long been speculated that glacio-eustatic sea level drop may have caused or contributed to the isolation and consequent desiccation of the Mediterranean in the late Miocene (the 'Messinian salinity crisis'). Ocean Drilling Program site 654 on the Sardinia margin of the Tyrrhenian Sea is the first deep-sea drill site to penetrate through upper Messinian evaporites into lower Messinian/upper Tortonian open marine sediments, and thus offers a unique opportunity to date the onset of the salinity crisis. A reexamination of the magnetostratigraphic, biostratigraphic, and stable isotope-stratigraphic constraints on the preevaporite sediments of site 654 has yielded two possible ages for the contact between salinity crisis sediments and the underlying normal marine sediments. One magnetostratigraphic interpretation plus the biostratigraphically determined position of the Tortonian/Messinian boundary imply a date of about 6.2 Ma for the youngest presalinity crisis sediments. An alternative magnetostratigraphic interpretation plus the carbon isotope stratigraphy imply a date of about 5.2 Ma. The younger of these dates coincides with a delta18O spike in open ocean sediments [Keigwin, 1987 doi:10.1029/PA002i006p00639], which is attributed to increased ice volume.

This paper documents the evolutionary history of Cycladophora davisiana Ehrenberg from an uppermost Miocene to Pleistocene sedimentary record in the high-latitude Northwest Pacific. It apparently evolved from C. sakaii Motoyama through a series of intermediates. C. sakaii has a relatively large shell with an external spongy layer. The evolutionary transition is characterized by a relatively rapid decrease in thorax size with a reduction of the spongy appendage. This change occurred during about 0.4 m.y. from 2.8 to 2.4 Ma without cladogenesis. Following this interval, a decrease in thorax size continued gradually up to the Recent, resulting in a very small morphology. Although the population of C. davisiana first appeared at about 2.5 Ma, some morphotypic specimens may occur in earlier periods as indistinguishable very small endmembers in the C. sakaii populations. Timing of the first appearance events both of morphotypic specimens and of a population of C. davisiana in Site 192 and previously reported cores does not disprove the idea that C. davisiana evolved first in the Northwest Pacific region, and later migrated into other regions of the world ocean. Biometrics clearly indicate no direct phylogenetic relationships between C. davisiana and C. cornutoides Kling in the studied core. Thus, the latter species, which was originally described as a variation and later elevated to a subspecies of the former species, is separated from the former species and raised to the species rank.

Accumulation rates of Mg, Al, Si, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, opal, and calcium carbonate have been calculated from their concentrations in samples from equatorial Deep Sea Drilling Project sites. Maps of element accumulation rates and of Q-mode factors derived from raw data indicate that the flux of trace metals to equatorial Pacific sediments has varied markedly through time and space in response to changes in the relative and absolute influence of several depositional influences: biogenic, detrital, authigenic, and hydrothermal sedimentation. Biologically derived material dominates the sediment of the equatorial Pacific. The distributions of Cu and Zn are most influenced by surface-water biological activity, but Ni, Al, Fe, and Mn are also incorporated into biological material. All of these elements have equatorial accumulation maxima similar to those of opal and calcium carbonate at times during the past 50 m.y. Detritus distributed by trade winds and equatorial surface circulation contributes Al, non-biogenic Si, Fe, and Mg to the region. Detrital sediment is most important in areas with a small supply of biogenic debris and low bulk-accumulation rates. Al accumulation generally increases toward the north and east, indicating its continental source and distribution by the northeast trade winds. Maxima in biological productivity during middle Eocene and latest Miocene to early Pliocene time and concomitant well-developed surface circulation contributed toward temporal maxima in the accumulation rates of Cu, Zn, Ni, and Al in sediments of those ages. Authigenic material is also important only where bulk-sediment accumulation rates are low. Ni, Cu, Zn, and sometimes Mn are associated with this sediment. Fe is almost entirely of hydrothermal origin. Mn is primarily hydrothermal, but some is probably scavenged from sea water by amorphous iron hydroxide floes along with other elements concentrated in hydrothermal sediments, Ni, Cu, and Zn. During the past 50 m.y. all of these elements accumulated over the East Pacific Rise at rates nearly an order of magnitude higher than those at non-rise-crest sites. In addition, factor analysis indicates that some of this material is carried substantial distances to the west of the rise crest. Accumulation rates of Fe in basal metalliferous sediments indicate that the hydrothermal activity that supplied amorphous Fe oxides to the East Pacific Rise areas was most intense during middle Eocene and late Miocene to early Pliocene time.

Toxaphene contamination of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) from North Atlantic waters was examined for the first time. Total toxaphene and SumCHB (sum of 11 chlorobornanes) concentrations in blubber samples ranged from 170 ± 110 and 41 ± 39 ng/g lipid weight (l.w.) for female minke whales from southeastern Greenland to 5800 ± 4100 and 1100 ± 780 ng/g l.w. for males from the North Sea, respectively. Very large variations in toxaphene concentrations among sampling areas were observed suggesting a spatial segregation of minke whales. However, much of the apparent geographical discrimination was explained by the seasonal fluctuation of animal fat mass. Patterns of CHBs in males revealed that recalcitrant CHBs were in higher proportions in animals from the more easterly areas than in animals from the more westerly areas. This trend may be influenced by the predominance of the US, over the European, input of toxaphene to North Atlantic waters.

Leg 76 sampled 31.5 m of basaltic basement at Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 534A in the Blake-Bahama Basin. The basalts represent a short section of mineralogically uniform, sparsely plagioclase-phyric pillow flows, composed mainly of plagioclase, augitic clinopyroxene, iron-titanium oxides with variable amounts of alteration products (smectite ± carbonate ± quartz). Their major element chemistry is typical of mid-ocean ridge tholeiites and has normative compositions of olivine tholeiites. Mg/(Mg + Fe**2+) ratios range from 0.58 to 0.60, which suggests that these basalts are evolved compared to primitive mantle melts.

Seven Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites recovered during ODP Leg 177 in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean were analyzed to study the Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil record. Calcareous nannofossil events previously described from intermediate and low latitudes were identified and calibrated with available geomagnetic and stable isotope stratigraphic data. In general, Pleistocene southern high latitude calcareous nannofossil events show synchronicity with those observed from warm and temperate latitudes. The first occurrence (FO) of Emiliania huxleyi and the last occurrence (LO) of Pseudoemiliania lacunosa are observed in marine isotope stages (MIS) 8 and 12, respectively. A reversal in abundance between Gephyrocapsa muellerae and E. huxleyi is observed at MIS 5. MIS 6 is characterized by an increase in G. muellerae and MIS 7 features a dramatic decrease in the proportion of Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica. This latter species began to increase its proportions from MIS 14 to 13. The LO of Reticulofenestra asanoi is observed within subchron C1r.1r and the FO of R. asanoi occurs at the top of C1r.2r. A reentry of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa can be identified in some cores during subchron C1r.1n. The LO of large morphotypes of Gephyrocapsa is well correlated through the studied area, and occurs during the middle-low part of subchron C1r.2r,synchronous with other oceanic regions. The FO of Calcidiscus macintyrei and FO of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa occur in the studied area close to 1.6 Ma.

We present an SiF4 separation line, coupled to a laser fluorination system, which allows for an efficient combined silica d18O and d30Si analysis (50 min per sample). The required sample weight of 1.5-2.0 mg allows for high-resolution isotope studies on biogenic opal. Besides analytical tests, the new instrumentation set-up was used to analyse two marine diatom fractions (>63 µm, 10-20 µm) with different diatom species compositions extracted from a Bølling/Allerød-Holocene core section [MD01-2416, North-West (NW) Pacific] to evaluate the palaeoceanographic significance of the diatom isotopic signals and to address isotopic effects related to contamination and species-related isotope effects (vital and environmental effects). While d30Si offsets between the two fractions were not discernible, supporting the absence of species-related silicon isotope effects, systematic offsets occur between the d18O records. Although small, these offsets point to species-related isotope effects, as bias by contamination can be discarded. The new records strengthen the palaeoceanographic history during the last deglaciation in the NW Pacific characterized by a sequence of events with varying surface water structure and biological productivity. With such palaeoceanographic evolution it becomes unlikely that the observed systematic d18O offsets signal seasonal temperature variability. This calls for reconsideration of vital effects, generally excluded to affect d18O measurements.

Continuous sea salt and mineral dust aerosol records have been studied on the two EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) deep ice cores. The joint use of these records from opposite sides of the East Antarctic plateau allows for an estimate of changes in dust transport and emission intensity as well as for the identification of regional differences in the sea salt aerosol source. The mineral dust flux records at both sites show a strong coherency over the last 150 kyr related to dust emission changes in the glacial Patagonian dust source with three times higher dust fluxes in the Atlantic compared to the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean (SO). Using a simple conceptual transport model this indicates that transport can explain only 40% of the atmospheric dust concentration changes in Antarctica, while factor 5-10 changes occurred. Accordingly, the main cause for the strong glacial dust flux changes in Antarctica must lie in environmental changes in Patagonia. Dust emissions, hence environmental conditions in Patagonia, were very similar during the last two glacials and interglacials, respectively, despite 2-4 °C warmer temperatures recorded in Antarctica during the penultimate interglacial than today. 2-3 times higher sea salt fluxes found in both ice cores in the glacial compared to the Holocene are difficult to reconcile with a largely unchanged transport intensity and the distant open ocean source. The substantial glacial enhancements in sea salt aerosol fluxes can be readily explained assuming sea ice formation as the main sea salt aerosol source with a significantly larger expansion of (summer) sea ice in the Weddell Sea than in the Indian Ocean sector. During the penultimate interglacial, our sea salt records point to a 50% reduction of winter sea ice coverage compared to the Holocene both in the Indian and Atlantic Ocean sector of the SO. However, from 20 to 80 ka before present sea salt fluxes show only very subdued millennial changes despite pronounced temperature fluctuations, likely due to the large distance of the sea ice salt source to our drill sites.

During Leg 198, the Cretaceous/Paleocene (K/P) boundary was recovered in a remarkable set of cores in nine separate holes at Sites 1209, 1210, 1211, and 1212 on the Southern High of Shatsky Rise. The boundary succession includes an uppermost Maastrichtian white to very pale orange, slightly indurated nannofossil ooze overlain by lowermost Paleocene grayish orange foraminiferal ooze. The boundary between the uppermost Maastrichtian and the lowermost Paleocene is clearly bioturbated. The contact surface is irregular, and pale orange burrows extend 10 cm into the white Maastrichtian ooze. Preliminary investigations conducted on board revealed that the deepest sections of these burrows yielded highly abundant, minute planktonic foraminiferal assemblages dominated by Guembelitria with rare Hedbergella holmdelensis and Hedbergella monmouthensis, possibly attributable to the lowermost Paleocene Zone P0. The substantial thickness of the uppermost Maastrichtian Micula prinsii (CC26) nannofossil Zone and the lowermost Danian Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina (Palpha) foraminiferal Zone suggested that the K/P boundary was rather expanded compared to the majority of deep-sea sites (see Bralower, Premoli Silva, Malone, et al., 2002, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.198.2002). This data report concerns the planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy across the K/P boundary in Hole 1209C, the shallowest site (2387 m water depth), and in Hole 1211C, the deepest site (2907 m water depth), where the foraminiferal record across the boundary appeared to be best preserved.

Calcium-isotope ratios (d44/42Ca) were measured in carbonate-rich sedimentary sections deposited during Oceanic Anoxic Events 1a (Early Aptian) and 2 (Cenomanian-Turonian). In sections from Resolution Guyot, Mid-Pacific Mountains; Coppitella, Italy; and the English Chalk at Eastbourne and South Ferriby, UK, a negative excursion in d44/42Ca of ~0.20 per mil and ~0.10 per mil is observed for the two events. These d44/42Ca excursions occur at the same stratigraphic level as the carbon-isotope excursions that define the events, but do not correlate with evidence for carbonate dissolution or lithological changes. Diagenetic and temperature effects on the calcium-isotope ratios can be discounted, leaving changes in global seawater composition as the most probable explanation for d44/42Ca changes in four different carbonate sections. An oceanic box model with coupled strontium- and calcium-isotope systems indicates that a global weathering increase is likely to be the dominant driver of transient excursions in calcium-isotope ratios. The model suggests that contributions from hydrothermal activity and carbonate dissolution are too small and short-lived to affect the oceanic calcium reservoir measurably. A modelled increase in weathering flux, on the order of three times the modern flux, combined with increased hydrothermal activity due to formation of the Ontong-Java Plateau (OAE1a) and Caribbean Plateau (OAE2), can produce trends in both calcium and strontium isotopes that match the signals recorded in the carbonate sections. This study presents the first major-element record of a weathering response to Oceanic Anoxic Events.
