Colonel John Butler (Niagara)/St. Catharines District Branch of the United Empire Loyalists fonds

United Empire Loyalist is an honour given to American Loyalists who came to British North America and the British Colonies to show their loyalty to King George III after the British defeat in the American Revolution. The Loyalists settled in Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and modern day New Brunswick. The Colonel John Butler (Niagara) Branch (formerly the St. Catharines and District Branch) has origins which date as far back as 1898. A branch was organized in Virgil by Captain John D. Servos, but was unsuccessful. In 1905 there was another attempt to form a branch, but the war of 1914-1918 resulted in this branch becoming inactive. In 1914, an Act of Parliament incorporated the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada. The St. Catharines and District Branch was formed in 1921. This branch remained active, and in 1992 they changed their name to The Colonel John Butler (Niagara) Branch. The Loyalists also have a strong focus on genealogy. A certificate that Francis Bond Head Wilson "being of United Empire Loyalist Descent has been regularly proposed, balloted for, and elected a member of this association." It is dated September 14th, 1934.

The History of the Consulate & The Empire of France Under Napoleon

The book is stamped in the front and back with the "Upper Canada College" crest. There is also a plate within the book indicating that it was presented to H.K. Woodruff by the senate as an acknowledgement of merit and as a reward for general proficiency in Upper Canada College in June, 1878. On the top of this plate it says: 1st Form Prize, Upper Modern Form. Daughters of the Empire Pin

A jewelry case which is a souvenir of the opening of the Royal York Hotel, June 1929. The case is faux leather with a velveteen lining. Inside the case is a pin for the Daughers' of the Empire. The pin belonged to Margaret Julia Woodruff (Band). "Margaret Woodruff" is scratched onto the back of the pin. She joined the group in 1909.

Broadside for a centennial celebration of the settlement of Ontario by the United Empire Loyalists

Broadside, 90 cm. x 55 cm. made from canvas. This broadside is for a centennial celebration of the settlement of Ontario by the United Empire Loyalists. The first line reads “1774 -1884” [it should be 1784-1884]. The celebration was to be held on the historic plains of Niagara. The names of the general committee of the celebration are listed as well as the names of Major Hiscott, warden; F.A.B. Clench, chairman and Dan Servos. It is written in pencil that “this was given by J.B. Secord”. There are some small holes in the broadside and a small bit of canvas has lost some of its texture. This affects the text very slightly. 1884
