New heat flow observations have been made in the Iberia abyssal plain off the Galicia margin along the transeat of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 149 drill sites. in order to investigate the nature of this unusually wide and deep continet-ocean transition region. Our results indicate the presence of three separate zones. Average values of 47.5 +/- 3 mW/m in the westernmost zone III agree with predictions of standard oceanic lithospheric models for its estimated age of 126 Ma. In contrast, the heat flow within zone II is 5-15 mW/m higher than predicted. assuming that the mantle heat flow remains constant across the basin. This region of high values is coincident with the location of a major intra-crustal "S"-type reflector east of ODP Site 900. and the anomaly is consistent with the presence of 2-3 km of primarily upper continental crust above the reflector, with concentrations of radiogenic components similar to those from granodiorite samplles dredged off Galicia Bank. It is not, however, consistent with the low values of heat production measured on gabbroic sanhples from its western end at ODP Site 900. In zone I, detailed measurements across the tilted fault block south of ODP Site 901 show consistent variations which closely match predictions due to the effects of basement structure and sediment deposition. There is no evidence for variations due to vertical convective transport along the dipping basement fault block. Once corrected for these variations. measurements in zone I yield average values that agree quite well with previous measurements across Calicia Bank. indicating no systematic landward increase in heat flow with decreasing amounts of continental, extension.

During the cruise the turbulence probe MSS050 was used for microstructure measurements. The profiler is produced by Sea and Sun Technology GmbH in co-operation with ISW Wassermesstechnik. The probe was equipped with 2 velocity microstructure shear sensors, a microstructure temperature sensor, standard CTD sensors for precision measurements, a vibration control sensor, a two component tilt sensor, a fluorescence sensor and surface detection sensor (SD) to indicate the water surface hit at rising measurements. The sampling rate for all sensors is 1024 samples per second, the resolution 16 bit. During the MSS measurements, the ship was moving with speed approx. 0.5-1.0 knots with respect to the water against the wind. In order to take into account the intermittent nature of marine turbulence, repeated MSS measurements were carried out in bursts of typically 10 profiles per station. The measurement interval was approximately 7 (10) min for a profile to 140 (200) dbar. During JC87 cruise 8 series of turbulence measurements were conducted. Fluorescence data was obtained on the 5 of them.

The presented database contains time-referenced sea ice draft values from upward looking sonar (ULS) measurements in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. The sea ice draft data can be used to infer the thickness of the ice. They were collected during the period 1990-2008. In total, the database includes measurements from 13 locations in the Weddell Sea and was generated from more than 3.7 million measurements of sea ice draft. The files contain uncorrected raw drafts, corrected drafts and the basic parameters measured by the ULS. The measurement principle, the data processing procedure and the quality control are described in detail. To account for the unknown speed of sound in the water column above the ULS, two correction methods were applied to the draft data. The first method is based on defining a reference level from the identification of open water leads. The second method uses a model of sound speed in the oceanic mixed layer and is applied to ice draft in austral winter. Both methods are discussed and their accuracy is estimated. Finally, selected results of the processing are presented.

Part of the geophysical work at the German Georg von Neumayer Station is the recording of the tidal movement of the Ekström Ice Shelf. Measurements are performed with an earthtide gravity meter for the vertical component of the movement and two simple tiltmeters for the horizontal components. Gravity measurements were done continuously during the 1984/85 winter season at the observatory of the Georg von Neumayer Station. Tilt measurements were carried out at the station and at three locations on an ice-rise at about 10 km distance from the station. Gravity measurements provide the tidal movements of the ice shelf, which amounts to about 1 m at spring tide. The most important result of the tiltmeter measurements lies in the fact that the amplitudes of tilt are substantially larger at the ice-rlse than at the observatory. Results of tide-correlated ice quake activities are also presented.
