Aim: To evaluate the influence of construction bite in the dentoskeletal changes induced by Klammt Appliance. Methods: The sample consisted of 17 children, with Class II malocclusion and initial mean age of 8.5 years. The construction bite was obtained using an Exactobite on edge-toedge anteroposterior relationship with 3 mm interincisal clearance. The height of the acrylic was determined by initial overbite associated to interincisal clearance and measured with digital caliper. The amount of advancement was obtained and measured by initial overjet in the lateral radiography. Pearson's correlation, linear regression and ANOVA were used to determine the relationship between dentoskeletal and construction bite variables. Results: The increase in the height of the acrylic promotes a greater inhibition of the forward displacement of the nasal spine and reduction in the facial growth index. The increase in the mandibular advancement induces more downward displacement of nasal spine and pogonion; a counter-clockwise rotation of palatine plane; an increase in mandibular length, maxillary alveolar height and interincisal angle; a decrease in mandibular alveolar height, the intermaxillary discrepancy and overjet; and palatal tipping of upper incisors. Conclusions: The different dimensions of the construction bite influence the dentoskeletal changes induced by the appliance in Class II treatment.

Objective: To investigate the effects of the standard (Class II) Balters bionator in growing patients with Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrusion by using morphometrics (thin-plate spline [TPS] analysis). Materials and Methods: Thirty-one Class II patients (17 male and 14 female) were treated with the Balters bionator (bionator group). Mean age at the start of treatment (T0) was 10.3 years, while it was 13 years at the end of treatment (T1). Mean treatment time was 2 years and 2 months. The control group consisted of 22 subjects (14 male and 8 female) with untreated Class II malocclusion. Mean age at T0 was 10.2 years, while it was 12.2 years at T1. The observation period lasted 2 years on average. TPS analysis evaluated statistical (permutation tests) differences in the craniofacial shape and size between the bionator and control groups. Results: Through TPS analysis (deformation grids) the bionator group showed significant shape changes in the mandible that could be described as a mandibular forward and downward displacement. The control group showed no statistically significant differences in the correction of Class II malocclusion. Conclusions: Bionator appliance is able to induce significant mandibular shape changes that lead to the correction of Class II dentoskeletal disharmony. © 2013 by The EH Angle Education and Research Foundation, Inc.

The modern math movement(s): an essay on how elementary school teachers in Brazil gave meaning to it
Resumo:
The main goal of this paper is to discuss the production of meaning of the Modern Math Movement. The main sources were data available in school archives and interviews with former teachers that we use in order to focus on the diversity of perspectives -that complement it or oppose it-, which comes up when teachers refer to the Movement. Using this process of signification, teachers whether accept it, invalidate it or adapt it to guidelines imposed to them in their teaching activities. We establish a methodology by following the premises of Oral History to gather oral testimonies. The theoretical foundations in which this article is written are the guidelines of Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics, John Thompson's Depth Hermeneutics and Bolivar's narrative analysis.

The introduction of type-II defects is discussed under the Lagrangian formalism and Lax representation for the N = 1 super-Liouville model. We derive a new kind of super-Backlund transformation for the model and show explicitly the conservation of the modified energy and momentum, as well as supercharge.

Training in rats adapts the portal vein to respond vigorously to sympathetic stimuli even when the animal is re-exposed to exercise. Moreover, changes in the exercise-induced effects of angiotensin II, a potent venoconstrictor agonist, in venous beds remain to be investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the effects of angiotensin II in the portal vein and vena cava from sedentary and trained rats at rest or submitted to an exercise session immediately before organ bath experiments. We found that training or exposure of sedentary animals to a single bout of running exercise does not significantly change the responses of the rat portal vein to angiotensin II. However, the exposure of trained animals to a single bout of running exercise enhanced the response of the rat portal vein to angiotensin II. This enhancement appeared to be territory-specific because it was not observed in the vena cava. Moreover, it was not observed inendothelium-disrupted preparations and in preparations treated with Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl esterhydrochloride, indomethacin, BQ-123 or BQ-788. These data indicate that training causes adaptations in the rat portal vein that respond vigorously to angiotensin II even upon re-exposure to exercise. This increased response to angiotensin II requires an enhancement of the vasocontractile influence of endothelin beyond the influence of nitric oxide and vasodilator prostanoids.

A myotoxic phospholipase A2, named bothropstoxin II (BthTX-II), was isolated from the venom of the South American snake Bothrops jararacussu and the pathogenesis of myonecrosis induced by this toxin was studied in mice. BthTX-II induced a rapid increase in plasma creatine kinase levels. Histological and ultrastructural observations demonstrate that this toxin affects muscle fibers by first disrupting the integrity of plasma membrane, as delta lesions were the earliest morphological alteration and since the plasma membrane was interrupted or absent in many portions. In agreement with this hypothesis, BthTX-II released peroxidase entrapped in negatively charged multilamellar liposomes and behaved as an amphiphilic protein in charge shift electrophoresis, an indication that its mechanism of action might be based on the interaction and disorganization of plasma membrane phospholipids. Membrane damage was followed by a complex series of morphological alterations in intracellular structures, most of which are probably related to an increase in cytosolic calcium levels. Myofilaments became hypercontracted into dense clumps which alternated with cellular spaces devoid of myofibrillar material. Later on, myofilaments changed to a hyaline appearance with a more uniform distribution. Mitochondria were drastically affected, showing high amplitude swelling, vesiculation of cristae, formation of flocculent densities, and membrane disruption. By 24 hr, abundant polymorphonuclear leucocytes and macrophages were observed in the interstitial space as well as inside necrotic fibers. Muscle regeneration proceeded normally, as abundant myotubes and regenerating myofibers were observed 7 days after BthTX-II injection. By 28 days regenerating fibers had a diameter similar to that of adult muscle fibers, although they presented two distinctive features: central location of nuclei and some fiber splitting. This good regenerative response may be explained by the observation that BthTX-II does not affect blood vessels, nerves, or basal laminae. © 1991.

I. Gunter and Christmas (1973) described the events leading to the stranding of a baleen whale on Ship Island, Mississippi, in 1968, giving the species as Balaenopteru physalus, the Rorqual. Unfortunately the identification was in error, but fortunately good photographs were shown. The underside of the tail was a splotched white, but there was no black margin. The specimen also had fewer throat and belly grooves than the Rorqual, as a comparison with True’s (1904) photograph shows. Dr. James Mead (in litt.) pointed out that the animal was a Sei Whale, Balaenoptera borealis. This remains a new Mississippi record and according to Lowery’s (1974) count, it is the fifth specimen reported from the Gulf of Mexico. The stranding of a sixth Sei Whale on Anclote Keys in the Gulf, west of Tarpon Springs, Florida on 30 May 1974, was reported in the newspapers and by the Smithsonian Institution (1974). II. Gunter, Hubbs and Beal (1955) gave measurements on a Pygmy Sperm Whale, Kogia breviceps, which stranded on Mustang Island on the Texas coast and commented upon the recorded variations of proportional measurements in this species. Then according to Raun, Hoese and Moseley (1970) these questions were resolved by Handley (1966), who showed that a second species, Kogia simus, the Dwarf Sperm Whale, is also present in the western North Atlantic. Handley’s argument is based on skull comparisons and it seems to be rather indubitable. According to Raun et al. (op. cit.), the stranding of a species of Kogia on Galveston Island recorded by Caldwell, Ingles and Siebenaler (1960) was K. simus. They also say that Caldwell (in litt.) had previously come to the same conclusion. Caldwell et al. also recorded another specimen from Destin, Florida, which is now considered to have been a specimen of simus. The known status of these two little sperm whales in the Gulf is summarized by Lowery (op. cit.).

The influence of deposition parameters, namely polymer concentration and pH of the deposition solution, cleaning, and drying steps on the morphology and electrical characteristics of polyaniline and sulfonated polystyrene (PANI/PSS) nanostructured films deposited by the self-assembly technique is evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, optical and atomic force microscopy, and electrical resistance measurements. It is found that stirring the cleaning solution during the cleaning step is crucial for obtaining homogenous films. Stirring of the cleaning solution also influences the amount of PANI adsorbed in the films. In this regard, the drying process seems to be less critical since PANI amount and film thickness are similar in films dried with N-2 flow or with an absorbent tissue. It is observed, however, that drying with N-2 flow results in rougher films. As an additional point, an assessment of the influence of the deposition method (manual versus mechanical) on the film characteristics was carried out. A significant difference on the amount of PANI and film thickness between films prepared by different human operators and by a homemade mechanical device was observed. The variability in film thickness and PANI adsorbed amount is smaller in films mechanically assembled. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We recently demonstrated that Angiotensin-(3-4) [Ang-(3-4)], an Ang II-derived dipeptide, overcomes inhibition of plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase promoted by nanomolar concentrations of Ang II in basolateral membranes of renal proximal tubule cells, with involvement of a so far unknown AT(2)R-dependent and NO-independent mechanism. The present study investigates the signaling pathway triggered by Ang-(3-4) that is responsible for counteracting the inhibitory effect of Ang II, and attempts to elucidate the functional interaction of the dipeptide with Ang II at the level of AT(2)R. Stimulation by cholera toxin of G(s)alpha protein structurally linked to AT(2)R as revealed by their co-immunoprecipitation mimicked the effect of Ang-(3-4) on Ca2+-ATPase activity. Furthermore, addition of dibutyril-cAMP (db-cAMP) mimicked Ang-(3-4), whereas the specific PKA inhibitor, PKAi((5-24)) peptide, suppressed the counter-regulatory effect of Ang-(3-4) and the AT(2)R agonist, CGP42112A. Membrane-associated PKA activity was stimulated by Ang-(3-4) or CGP42112A to comparable levels as db-cAMP, and the Ang-(3-4) effect was abrogated by the AT(2)R antagonist PD123319, whereas the AT(1)R antagonist Losartan had no effect. Ang-(3-4) stimulated PKA-mediated phosphorylation of Ca2+-ATPase and activated PKA to comparable levels. Binding assays demonstrated that Ang-(3-4) could not displace H-3-Ang II from HEK 293T cells expressing AT(2)R, but 10(-10) mol/L Ang-(3-4) resulted in the appearance of a probable higher-affinity site (picomolar range) for Ang II. The results presented herein demonstrate that Ang-(3-4), acting as an allosteric enhancer, suppresses Ang II-mediated inhibition of Ca2+-ATPase through an AT(2)R/cAMP/PKA pathway, after inducing conformational changes in AT(2)R that results in generation of higher-affinity sites for Ang II. In the paper of Bonora et al. (2008) [3] we have shown, in the context of type II superstring theory, the classification of the allowed B-field and A-field configurations in the presence of anomaly-free D-branes, the mathematical framework being provided by the geometry of gerbes. Here we complete the discussion considering in detail the case of a stack of D-branes, carrying a non-abelian gauge theory, which was just sketched in Bonora et al. (2008) [3]. In this case we have to mix the geometry of abelian gerbes, describing the B-field, with the one of higher-rank bundles, ordinary or twisted. We describe in detail the various cases that arise according to such a classification, as we did for a single D-brane, showing under which hypotheses the A-field turns out to be a connection on a canonical gauge bundle. We also generalize to the non-abelian setting the discussion about "gauge bundles with non-integral Chern classes", relating them to twisted bundles with connection. Finally, we analyze the geometrical nature of the Wilson loop for each kind of gauge theory on a D-brane or stack of D-branes.

Several types of alumina were synthesized from sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) by precipitation with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and subsequently calcination at 500 degrees C to obtain gamma-Al2O3. The precursor aluminate was derived from aluminum scrap. The various gamma-Al2O3 synthesized were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), adsorption-desorption of N-2 (S-BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD revealed that distinct phases of Al2O3 were formed during thermal treatment. Moreover, it was observed that conditions of synthesis (pH, aging time and temperature) strongly affect the physicochemical properties of the alumina. A high-surface-area alumina (371 m(2) g(-1)) was synthesized under mild conditions, from inexpensive raw materials. These aluminas were tested for the adsorption of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution at toxic metal concentrations, and isotherms were determined. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The modulation played by reactive oxygen species on the angiotensin II-induced contraction in type I-diabetic rat carotid was investigated. Concentration-response curves for angiotensin II were obtained in endothelium-intact or endothelium-denuded carotid from control or streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, pre-treated with tiron (superoxide scavenger), PEG-catalase (hydrogen peroxide scavenger), dimethylthiourea (hydroxyl scavenger), apocynin [NAD(P) H oxidase inhibitor], SC560 (cyclooxygenase-1 inhibitor), SC236 (cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor) or Y-27632 (Rho-kinase inhibitor). Reactive oxygen species were measured by flow cytometry in dihydroethidium (DHE)-loaded endothelial cells. Cyclooxygenase and AT1-receptor expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Diabetes increased the angiotensin II-induced contraction but reduced the agonist potency in rat carotid. Endothelium removal, tiron or apocynin restored the angiotensin II-induced contraction in diabetic rat carotid to control levels. PEG-catalase, DMTU or SC560 reduced the angiotensin II-induced contraction in diabetic rat carotid at the same extent. SC236 restored the angiotensin II potency in diabetic rat carotid. Y-27632 reduced the angiotensin II-induced contraction in endothelium-intact or -denuded diabetic rat carotid. Diabetes increased the DHE-fluorescence of carotid endothelial cells. Apocynin reduced the DHE-fluorescence of endothelial cells from diabetic rat carotid to control levels. Diabetes increased the muscular cyclooxygenase-2 expression but reduced the muscular AT1-receptor expression in rat carotid. In summary, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion-derived from endothelial NAD(P) H oxidase mediate the hyperreactivity to angiotensin II in type I-diabetic rat carotid, involving the participation of cyclooxygenase-1 and Rho-kinase. Moreover, increased muscular cyclooxygenase-2 expression in type I-diabetic rat carotid seems to be related to the local reduced AT1-receptor expression and the reduced angiotensin II potency.
