Between 1086.6 and 1229.4 m below seafloor at Site 642 on the Outer Vøring Plateau, a series of intermediate volcanic extrusive flow units and volcaniclastic sediments was sampled. A mixed sequence of dacitic subaerial flows, andesitic basalts, intermediate volcaniclastics, subordinate mid-ocean ridge basalt, (MORB) lithologies, and intrusives was recovered, in sharp contrast to the more uniform tholeiitic T-type MORB units of the overlying upper series. This lower series of volcanics is composed of three chemically distinct groups, (B, A2, A1), rather than the two previously identified. Flows of the dacitic group (B) have trace-element and initial Sr isotope signatures which indicate that their source magma derived from the partial melting of a component of continental material in a magma chamber at a relatively high level in the crust. The relative proportions of crustal components in this complex melt are not known precisely. The most basic group (A2) probably represents a mixture of this material with MORB-type tholeiitic melt. A third group (A1), of which there was only one representative flow recovered, is chemically intermediate between the two groups above, and may suggest a repetition of, or a transition phase in, the mixing processes.

DSDP Leg 92 drilled at four sites along an east-west transect at 19°S on the western flank of the East Pacific Rise (EPR), in an area where sediments are essentially a mixture of hydrothermal and biogenic components, with only a minimal contribution of clastic material. Rare-earth element (REE) data on the metalliferous (non-carbonate) fraction of samples ranging in age from ~2 to ~27 Ma indicate the existence of two distinct groups of patterns corresponding to two broad age groups, one <=8 Ma, the other >=10 Ma. Within each group, REE patterns have characteristics which are near-uniform, despite large variations in total REE abundances. Sediments of the younger group are enriched in light REE (LREE) relative to deep bottom waters influenced by the hydrothermal plume extending west from the EPR at 19°S. Sediments of the older groups show further relative LREE enrichment and/or heavy REE (HREE) depletion. Surficial sediments deposited beneath the lysocline have high Sum REE concentrations resulting from slow accumulation rates, and patterns resembling older sediments due to early diagenetic effects. A correlation between the mass accumulation rates (MAR) of Sum REE and Fe + Mn suggests that ferromanganese particulate matter supplied by the hydrothermal plume scavenges REE; during this process the LREE are preferentially removed from plume seawater. The MAR of Fe + Mn shows a general decrease with age above basement, whereas Sum REE concentrations in the metalliferous component increase with age above basement. This supports the Ruhlin and Owen model wherein limited scavenging of REE, due to rapid burial of sediment near the palaeo-axis, leads to low concentrations (but high MAR-values) for the REE. Following deposition and burial of the hydrothermal component, further relative flattening of the REE pattern takes place, probably the result of diagenetic reactions over several million years. Phase partitioning data indicate that the proportion of REE residing in more poorly crystalline phases tends to increase with age (from ~45% to 90% of Sum REE). This suggests that as initial ferromanganese precipitates undergo diagenetic recrystallization, REE are transferred to the poorly crystalline phases, and/or are scavenged from pore waters by these phases. Because of the various modifications to REE patterns apparently produced both in the water column and post-depositional settings, the REE patterns of metalliferous sediments will not reflect fine-scale REE variations in associated oceanic water masses.

During the late Pliocene-middle Pleistocene, 63 species of elongate, bathyal-upper abyssal benthic foraminifera (Extinction Group = Stilostomellidae, Pleurostomellidae, some Nodosariidae) declined in abundance and finally disappeared in the northern Indian Ocean (ODP Sites 722, 758), as part of the global extinction of at least 88 related species at this time. The detailed record of withdrawal of these species differs by depth and geography in the Indian Ocean. In northwest Indian Ocean Site 722 (2045 m), the Extinction Group of 54 species comprised 2-15% of the benthic foraminiferal fauna in the earliest Pleistocene, but declined dramatically during the onset of the mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) at 1.2-1.1 Ma, with all but three species disappearing by the end of the MPT (~0.6 Ma). In northeast Indian Ocean Site 758 (2925 m), the Extinction Group of 44 species comprised 1-5% of the benthic foraminiferal fauna at ~3.3-2.6 Ma, but declined in abundance and diversity in three steps, at ~2.5, 1.7, and 1.2 Ma, with all but one species disappearing by the end of the MPT. At both sites there are strong positive correlations between the accumulation rate of the Extinction Group and proxies indicating low-oxygen conditions with a high organic carbon input. In both sites, there was a pulsed decline in Extinction Group abundance and species richness, especially in glacial periods, with some partial recoveries in interglacials. We infer that the glacial declines at the deeper Site 758 were a result of increased production of colder, well-ventilated Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), particularly in the late Pliocene and during the MPT. The Extinction Group at shallower water depths (Site 722) were not impacted by the deeper water mass changes until the onset of the MPT, when cold, well-ventilated Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water (GNAIW) production increased and may have spread into the Indian Ocean. Increased chemical ventilation at various water depths since late Pliocene, particularly in glacial periods, possibly in association with decreased or more fluctuating organic carbon flux, might be responsible for the pulsed global decline and extinction of this rather specialised group of benthic foraminifera.

The main characteristics of the Vernagtferner mass balance are sumarized in the table below. The mass balance years from 1964/65 to 2003/2004 are listed. The table includes the total area of the glacier (basis for the calculations), the equilibrium line altitude (ELA), percentage of the accumulation area in relation to the total area (AAR) and the specific net mass balance in mm w.e. (water equivalent) per year. It becomes clear that, after a rather minor growth period in the mid 1970's, the glacier continually lost mass since the beginning of the 1980's. Besides that, a clear increase of mass balance years with extreme mass losses could be observed in the last decade. The "glacier-friendly" summer with a well-balanced mass balance in 1999 could only interrupt the series of years with extreme mass losses, but this means no change in the trend. The minor mass loss in 1999 was caused by a winter snow cover above average, which prevented the glacier from becoming snow free over large areas and thus resulted in a lower ice melt. Although real summer conditions in 2000 were mainly restricted to August and produced a snow free area only slightly larger than in 1999, there have been further ice losses. This trend of negative mass balance continued also in the years 2001 and 2002. Nevertheless, the losses are moderate because a smaller part of the glacier became ice free until autumn (appr. 50 %). The summer 2003 caused a loss of ice in a dimension never seen since the beginning of the scientific investigations. This resulted from a combination of different factors: after only a moderate winter snowcover the glacier became snow free very early. For the first time the ablation area spanned over the entire glacier (blue fields in the mass balance tables!). Only one short snowfall event interrupted the ablation period, which lasted twice as long as in the years of large losses in the 1990's. The extreme mass loss in 2003 will also influence the mass balance in the following year 2004. The graphical representation of the elevation distribution of the specific mass balance together with the absolute mass balance can be found individually for each year by choosing one of the mass balance values from the table. These diagrams also include the area-height-distribution of the glacier and the ablation area. A tabular version of the numeric values in dependence of the elevation, provided separately for the accumulation area, the ablation area and the total glacier, can be found in colums "Persistent Identifier". The tables include the results for three different parts of the glacier and for the total glacier.

This paper deals with the assessment of the contribution of the second flexural mode to the dynamic behaviour of simply supported railway bridges. Alluding to the works of other authors, it is suggested in some references that the dynamic behaviour of simply supported bridges could be adequately represented taking into account only the contribution of the fundamental flexural mode. On the other hand, the European Rail Research Institute (ERRI) proposes that the second mode should also be included whenever the associated natural frequency is lower than 30 Hz]. This investigation endeavours to clarify the question as much as possible by establishing whether the maximum response of the bridge, in terms of displacements, accelerations and bending moments, can be computed accurately not taking account of the contribution of the second mode. To this end, a dimensionless formulation of the equations of motion of a simply supported beam traversed by a series of equally spaced moving loads is presented. This formulation brings to light the fundamental parameters governing the behaviour of the beam: damping ratio, dimensionless speed $ \alpha$=VT/L, and L/d ratio (L stands for the span of the beam, V for the speed of the train, T represents the fundamental period of the bridge and d symbolises the distance between consecutive loads). Assuming a damping ratio equal to 1%, which is a usual value for prestressed high-speed bridges, a parametric analysis is conducted over realistic ranges of values of $ \alpha$ and L/d. The results can be extended to any simply supported bridge subjected to a train of equally spaced loads in virtue of the so-called Similarity Formulae. The validity of these formulae can be derived from the dimensionless formulation mentioned above. In the parametric analysis the maximum response of the bridge is obtained for one thousand values of speed that cover the range from the fourth resonance of the first mode to the first resonance of the second mode. The response at twenty-one different locations along the span of the beam is compared in order to decide if the maximum can be accurately computed with the sole contribution of the fundamental mode.

Computational homogenization by means of the finite element analysis of a representative volume element of the microstructure is used to simulate the deformation of nanostructured Ti. The behavior of each grain is taken into account using a single crystal elasto-viscoplastic model which includes the microscopic mechanisms of plastic deformation by slip along basal, prismatic and pyramidal systems. Two different representations of the polycrystal were used. Each grain was modeled with one cubic finite element in the first one while many cubic elements were used to represent each grain in the second one, leading to a model which includes the effect of grain shape and size in a limited number of grains due to the computational cost. Both representations were used to simulate the tensile deformation of nanostructured Ti processed by ECAP-C as well as the drawing process of nanostructured Ti billets. It was found that the first representation based in one finite element per grain led to a stiffer response in tension and was not able to predict the texture evolution during drawing because the strain gradient within each grain could not be captured. On the contrary, the second representation of the polycrystal microstructure with many finite elements per grain was able to predict accurately the deformation of nanostructured Ti.

Neuronal morphology is hugely variable across brain regions and species, and their classification strategies are a matter of intense debate in neuroscience. GABAergic cortical interneurons have been a challenge because it is difficult to find a set of morphological properties which clearly define neuronal types. A group of 48 neuroscience experts around the world were asked to classify a set of 320 cortical GABAergic interneurons according to the main features of their three-dimensional morphological reconstructions. A methodology for building a model which captures the opinions of all the experts was proposed. First, one Bayesian network was learned for each expert, and we proposed an algorithm for clustering Bayesian networks corresponding to experts with similar behaviors. Then, a Bayesian network which represents the opinions of each group of experts was induced. Finally, a consensus Bayesian multinet which models the opinions of the whole group of experts was built. A thorough analysis of the consensus model identified different behaviors between the experts when classifying the interneurons in the experiment. A set of characterizing morphological traits for the neuronal types was defined by performing inference in the Bayesian multinet. These findings were used to validate the model and to gain some insights into neuron morphology.

This paper is part of a set of publications related with the development of mathematical models aimed to simulate the dynamic input and output of experimental nondestructive tests in order to detect structural imperfections. The structures to be considered are composed by steel plates of thin thickness. The imperfections in these cases are cracks and they can penetrate either a significant part of the plate thickness or be micro cracks or superficial imperfections. The first class of cracks is related with structural safety and the second one is more connected to the structural protection to the environment, particularly if protective paintings can be deteriorated. Two mathematical groups of models have been developed. The first group tries to locate the position and extension of the imperfection of the first class of imperfections, i.e. cracks and it is the object of the present paper. Bending Kirchoff thin plate models belong to this first group and they are used to this respect. The another group of models is dealt with membrane structures under the superficial Rayleigh waves excitation. With this group of models the micro cracks detection is intended. In the application of the first group of models to the detection of cracks, it has been observed that the differences between the natural frequencies of the non cracked and the cracked structures are very small. However, geometry and crack position can be identified quite accurately if this comparison is carried out between first derivatives (mode rotations) of the natural modes are used instead. Finally, in relation with the analysis of the superficial crack existence the use of Rayleigh waves is very promising. The geometry and the penetration of the micro crack can be detected very accurately. The mathematical and numerical treatment of the generation of these Rayleigh waves present and a numerical application has been shown.

The chromophore of photoactive yellow protein (PYP) (i.e., 4-hydroxycinnamic acid) has been replaced by an analogue with a triple bond, rather than a double bond (by using 4-hydroxyphenylpropiolic acid in the reconstitution, yielding hybrid I) and by a “locked” chromophore (through reconstitution with 7-hydroxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid, in which a covalent bridge is present across the vinyl bond, resulting in hybrid II). These hybrids absorb maximally at 464 and 443 nm, respectively, which indicates that in both hybrids the deprotonated chromophore does fit into the chromophore-binding pocket. Because the triple bond cannot undergo cis/trans (or E/Z) photoisomerization and because of the presence of the lock across the vinyl double bond in hybrid II, it was predicted that these two hybrids would not be able to photocycle. Surprisingly, both are able. We have demonstrated this ability by making use of transient absorption, low-temperature absorption, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Both hybrids, upon photoexcitation, display authentic photocycle signals in terms of a red-shifted intermediate; hybrid I, in addition, goes through a blue-shifted-like intermediate state, with very slow kinetics. We interpret these results as further evidence that rotation of the carbonyl group of the thioester-linked chromophore of PYP, proposed in a previous FTIR study and visualized in recent time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments, is of critical importance for photoactivation of PYP.

Representations of the (infinite) canonical anticommutation relations and the associated operator algebra, the fermion algebra, are studied. A “coupling constant” (in (0,1]) is defined for primary states of “finite type” of that algebra. Primary, faithful states of finite type with arbitrary coupling are constructed and classified. Their physical significance for quantum thermodynamical systems at high temperatures is discussed. The scope of this study is broadened to include a large class of operator algebras sharing some of the structural properties of the fermion algebra.

S-Nitrosothiols have generated considerable interest due to their ability to act as nitric oxide (NO) donors and due to their possible involvement in bioregulatory systems—e.g., NO transfer reactions. Elucidation of the reaction pathways involved in the modification of the thiol group by S-nitrosothiols is important for understanding the role of S-nitroso compounds in vivo. The modification of glutathione (GSH) in the presence of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) was examined as a model reaction. Incubation of GSNO (1 mM) with GSH at various concentrations (1–10 mM) in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) yielded oxidized glutathione, nitrite, nitrous oxide, and ammonia as end products. The product yields were dependent on the concentrations of GSH and oxygen. Transient signals corresponding to GSH conjugates, which increased by one mass unit when the reaction was carried out with 15N-labeled GSNO, were identified by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. When morpholine was present in the reaction system, N-nitrosomorpholine was formed. Increasing concentrations of either phosphate or GSH led to lower yields of N-nitrosomorpholine. The inhibitory effect of phosphate may be due to reaction with the nitrosating agent, nitrous anhydride (N2O3), formed by oxidation of NO. This supports the release of NO during the reaction of GSNO with GSH. The products noted above account quantitatively for virtually all of the GSNO nitrogen consumed during the reaction, and it is now possible to construct a complete set of pathways for the complex transformations arising from GSNO + GSH.

Pre-B-cell growth-stimulating factor/stromal cell-derived factor 1 (PBSF/SDF-1) is a member of the CXC group of chemokines that is initially identified as a bone marrow stromal cell-derived factor and as a pre-B-cell stimulatory factor. Although most chemokines are thought to be inducible inflammatory mediators, PBSF/SDF-1 is essential for perinatal viability, B lymphopoiesis, bone marrow myelopoiesis, and cardiac ventricular septal formation, and it has chemotactic activities on resting lymphocytes and monocytes. In this paper, we have isolated a cDNA that encodes a seven transmembrane-spanning-domain receptor, designated pre-B-cell-derived chemokine receptor (PB-CKR) from a murine pre-B-cell clone, DW34. The deduced amino acid sequence has 90% identity with that of a HUMSTSR/fusin, a human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) entry coreceptor. However, the second extracellular region has lower identity (67%) compared with HUMSTSR/fusin. PB-CKR is expressed during embryo genesis and in many organs and T cells of adult mice. Murine PBSF/SDF-1 induced an increase in intracellular free Ca2+ in DW34 cells and PB-CKR-transfected Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, suggesting that PB-CKR is a functional receptor for murine PBSF/SDF-1. Murine PBSF/SDF-1 also induced Ca2+ influx in fusin-transfected CHO cells. On the other hand, considering previous results that HIV-1 does not enter murine T cells that expressed human CD4, PB-CKR may not support HIV-1 infection. Thus, PB-CKR will be an important tool for functional mapping of HIV-1 entry coreceptor fusin and for understanding the function of PBSF/SDF-1 further.

We report 13C magic angle spinning NMR observation of photochemically induced dynamic nuclear spin polarization (photo- CIDNP) in the reaction center (RC) of photosystem II (PS2). The light-enhanced NMR signals of the natural abundance 13C provide information on the electronic structure of the primary electron donor P680 (chlorophyll a molecules absorbing around 680 nm) and on the pz spin density pattern in its oxidized form, P680⨥. Most centerband signals can be attributed to a single chlorophyll a (Chl a) cofactor that has little interaction with other pigments. The chemical shift anisotropy of the most intense signals is characteristic for aromatic carbon atoms. The data reveal a pronounced asymmetry of the electronic spin density distribution within the P680⨥. PS2 shows only a single broad and intense emissive signal, which is assigned to both the C-10 and C-15 methine carbon atoms. The spin density appears shifted toward ring III. This shift is remarkable, because, for monomeric Chl a radical cations in solution, the region of highest spin density is around ring II. It leads to a first hypothesis as to how the planet can provide itself with the chemical potential to split water and generate an oxygen atmosphere using the Chl a macroaromatic cycle. A local electrostatic field close to ring III can polarize the electronic charge and associated spin density and increase the redox potential of P680 by stabilizing the highest occupied molecular orbital, without a major change of color. This field could be produced, e.g., by protonation of the keto group of ring V. Finally, the radical cation electronic structure in PS2 is different from that in the bacterial RC, which shows at least four emissive centerbands, indicating a symmetric spin density distribution over the entire bacteriochlorophyll macrocycle.

The lipooligosaccharide from Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC), consists of lipid A, an oligosaccharide core and three branches, α, β, and γ. We report the cloning of the gene (lgtG, lipooligosaccharide glycosyl transferase G) encoding the glucosyl transferase of GC that initiates the β chain which consists of a lactosyl moiety. This gene contains a homopolymeric tract of cytidine [poly(C)] and we demonstrate that changes in the number of Cs in poly(C) account for the variation of β chain expression in different GC strains. Biochemical analyses and mass spectrometry clearly attribute the reactivity of mAb 2C7 to the presence of the lactosyl β chain. In addition, we demonstrate that in the absence of the lactosyl group, a phosphoethanolamine is added to generate a new antigenic epitope as evidenced by the gain of reactivity to mAb 2-L1–8. These results show that, like the α chain, the β chain of lipooligosaccharide is subject to antigenic variation.
