Ab initio fully relativistic SCF molecular calculations of energy eigenvalues as well as coupling-matrix elements are used to calculate the 1s_\sigma excitation differential cross section for Ne-Ne and Ne-O in ion-atom collisions. A relativistic perturbation treatment which allows a direct comparison with analogous non-relativistic calculations is also performed.

Using the single-particle amplitudes from a 20-level coupled-channel calculation with ab initio relativistic self consistent LCAO-MO Dirac-Fock-Slater energy eigenvalues and matrix elements we calculate within the frame of the inclusive probability formalism impact-parameter-dependent K-hole transfer probabilities. As an example we show results for the heavy asymmetric collision system S{^15+} on Ar for impact energies from 4.7 to 16 MeV. The inclusive probability formalism which reinstates the many-particle aspect of the collision system permits a qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experiment which is not achieved by the single-particle picture.

To evaluate single and double K-shell inclusive charge transfer probabilities in ion-atom collisions we solve the time-dependent Dirac equation. By expanding the timedependent wavefunction in a set of molecular basis states the time-dependent equation reduces to a set of coupled-channel equations. The energy eigenvalues and matrix elements are taken from self-consistent relativistic molecular many-electron Dirac-Fock-Slater calculations. We present many-electron inclusive probabilities for different final configurations as a function of impact parameter for single and double K-shell vacancy production in collisions of bare S on Ar.

Relativistic multi-configuration Dirac Fock (MCDF) wavefunctions coupled to good angular momentum J have been calculated for low lying states of Ba I and Ba II. These wavefunctions are compared with semiempirical ones derived from experimental atomic energy levels. It is found that significantly better agreement is obtained when close configurations are included in the MCDF wavefunctions. Calculations of the electronic part of the field isotope shift lead to very good agreement with electronic factors derived from experimental data. Furthermore, the slopes of the lines in a King plot analysis of many of the optical lines are predicted accurately by these calculations. However, the MCDF wavefunctions seem not to be of sufficient accuracy to give agreement with the experimental magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine structure constants.

Relativistic Auger rates for the 2p spectra of Mg-like ions have been calculated in the atomic range 13 < Z < 36. We used the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method but beyond a simple frozen-orbital approach we include also relaxation for the bound electrons and the interchannel interaction between the continuum states. Both effects may alter the individual transition rates remarkably. This is analysed for a few selected states within the isoelectronic sequence. Weak transitions within the 2p spectra can be changed by an order of magnitude because of the continuum coupling. The influence of both effects for higher-Z ions is reduced but still remain visible.

Non-relativistic and relativistic self-consistent Hartree- Fock-Slater and Dirac-Slater models have been used to calculate one-electron energy levels and ionization energies for UF_5. The calculations were performed in an assumed structure of C_4v symmetry with the uranium atom at the center of mass of the molecule. The spacing and level ordering are compared with earlier results obtained with the MS X\alpha method using the muffin-tin approximation. Connections with the multiphoton isotope separation scheme of UF_6 are discussed.

A theoretical study of the physicochemical properties of elements 104, 105, and 106 and their compounds in the gas phase and aqueous solutions has been undertaken using relativistic atomic and molecular codes. Trends in properties such as bonding, ionization potentials, electron affinities, energies of electronic transitions, stabilities of oxidation states etc. have been defined within the corresponding chemical groups and within the transactinides. These trends are shown to be determined by increasing relativistic effects within the groups. The behaviour of some gas phase compounds and complexes in solutions is predicted for the gas chromatography and solvent extraction experiments. Redox potentials in aqueous solutions of these elements are estimated.

Energy spectra of electrons ejected from collisions between a carbon foil and Ne projectiles with energies between 1.4 and 20 MeV have been measured. Continuous and discrete electron energy distributions are observed. Auger transitions of foil-excited Ne have been studied. Using relativistic Dirac-Fock multiconfiguration calculations, most of the measured Auger transitions have been identified.

The chemical properties of element 111, eka-gold, are predicted through the use of the periodic table, relativistic Hartee-Fock-Slater calculations, and various qualitative theories which have established their usefulness in understanding and correlating properties of molecules. The results indicate that element 111 will be like Au(III) in its chemistry with little or no tendency to show stability in the I or II states. There is a possibility that the 111 - ion, analogous to the auride ion, will be stable.

Element 115 is expected to be in group V-a of the periodic table and have most stable oxidation states of I and III. The oxidation state of I, which plays a minor role in bismuth chemistry, should be a major factor in 115 chemistry. This change will arise because of the large relativistic splitting of the spherically symmetric 7p_l/2 shell from the 7P_3/2 shell. Element 115 will therefore have a single 7p_3/2 electron outside a 7p^2_1/2 closed shell. The magnitude of the first ionization energy and ionic radius suggest a chemistry similar to Tl^+. Similar considerations suggest that 115^3+ will have a chemistry similar to Bi^3+. Hydrolysis will therefore be easy and relatively strongly complexing anions of strong acids will be needed in general to effect studies of complexation chemistry. Some other properties of 115 predicted are as follows: ionization potentials I 5.2 eV, II 18.1 eV, III 27.4 eV, IV 48.5 eV, 0 \rightarrow 5^+ 159 eV; heat of sublimation, 34 kcal (g-atom)^-1; atomic radius, 2.0 A; ionic radius, 115^+ 1.5 A, 115^3+ 1.0 A; entropy, 16 cal deg^-1 (g-atom)^-l (25°); standard electrode potential 115^+ |115, -1.5 V; melting and boiling points are similar to element 113.

Atomic and ionic radii are presented for the elements E104-E120 and E156-E172. It is shown that a number of effects correlated with the large relativistic contraction of orbitals with low angular momentum leads to smaller atoms for higher atomic numbers. It is expected that Cs is the largest atom in nature.

Using a phenomenological model, the influence of quantum electrodynamical effects on the prediction of the chemical behavior of superheavy elements within a relativistic Dirac-Slater calculation was investigated. This influence will be small and nondetectable for elements up to Z = 114. For elements near Z = 164 some changes in the ground state configurations occur but the chemical behavior will not change. Using this heuristic model, it is also possible to calculate elements beyond Z = 175. As an example we have chosen element E184 and are now able to make more valid speculations about the chemical behavior of the element than Penneman and co-workers could.

Multiconfiguration relativistic Dirac-Fock (MCDF) values have been computed for the first four ionization potentials (IPs) of element 104 (unnilquadium) and of the other group 4 elements (Ti, Zr, and Hf). Factors were calculated that allowed correction of the systematic errors between the MCDF IPs and the experimental IPs. Single "experimental" IPs evaluated in eV (to ± 0.1 eV) for element 104 are: [104(0),6.5]; [104( 1 + ),14.8]; [104(2 + ),23.8]; [104(3 + ),31.9]. Multiple experimental IPs evaluated in eV for element 104 are: [(0-2+ ),21.2±0.2]; [(0-3+ ),45.1 ±0.2]; [(0-4+ ),76.8±0.3].Our MCDF results track 11 of the 12 experimental single IPs studied for group 4 atoms and ions. The exception is Hf( 2 + ). We submit our calculated IP of 22.4 ± 0.2 eV as much more accurate than the value of 23.3 eV derived from experiment.

Electronic factors in the volume isotope shift have been calculated in an ab initio way with the relativistic Dirac-Fock method for a number of different optical single/and two-photon transitions in Au I. The agreement with a semi-empirical method is within 10% for the resonance transition. For this one and a few other transitions the effect of core excitation has been analyzed with the Multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method as well, and it was found to reduce the electronic factor in the order of 5 %.
