This review covers two important techniques, high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS), used to characterize food products and detect possible adulteration of wine, fruit juices, and olive oil, all important products of the Mediterranean Basin. Emphasis is placed on the complementary use of SNIF-NMR (site-specific natural isotopic fractionation nuclear magnetic resonance) and IRMS (isotope-ratio mass spectrometry) in association with chemometric methods for detecting the adulteration.

The nuptial flight allows males and females to meet and copulate and both need energy to perform this activity. Before leaving the nest, males and females are well nourished and ready to mate. However, little is known about the lipid and energy contents in females before the nuptial flight (virgins) and after it (mated females). In this work we measured lipid concentrations in relation to body weight in these individuals. Our results showed that 16.82% of the bodies of young virgin females one month before mating flight are composed of lipids, contrasting with the 32.62% lipid content in mated females who had not excavated their nest yet, and 32.88% in those who had. The energy content measured for virgin females was 2942.63 J, contrasting with 6110.01 J for queens before excavating the nest and 5677.51 J after excavation. Based on our results, we conclude that the body mass, and therefore the lipid and energy contents in the bodies of Atta sexdens rubropilosa queens double during the last month before the nuptial flight. This energy resource is fundamental to the activities required during the nuptial flight, digging the nest and the founding of the colony.

Effect of Citrus floral extracts on the foraging behavior of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona pectoralis (Dalla Torre). Stingless bees have an important role as pollinators of many wild and cultivated plant species in tropical regions. Little is known, however, about the interaction between floral fragrances and the foraging behavior of meliponine species. Thus we investigated the chemical composition of the extracts of citric (lemon and orange) flowers and their effects on the foraging behavior of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona pectoralis. We found that each type of flower has its own specific blend of major compounds: limonene (62.9%) for lemon flowers, and farnesol (26.5%), (E)-nerolidol (20.8%), and linalool (12.7%) for orange flowers. In the foraging experiments the S. pectoralis workers were able to use the flower extracts to orient to the food source, overlooking plates baited with hexane only. However, orange flower extracts were seemingly more attractive to these worker bees, maybe because of the particular blend present in it. Our results reveal that these fragrances are very attractive to S. pectoralis, so we can infer that within citric orchards they could be important visitors in the study area; however habitat destruction, overuse of pesticides and the competitive override by managed honeybees might have put at risk their populations and thus the ecological services they provide to us.

The committee is followed with interest the work of the Department of Corrections and the Department of Veterans Affairs in evaluating the needs of their facilities and recommends similar evaluations of facilities around the state by other agencies. The committee members are ready to offer advice on the needs of the state's again infrastructure and steps that could be taken to evaluate vacant and underutilized buildings and reduce operational and maintenance costs.

(1,3)-b-D-glucan is a component of the fungal cell wall. New assays have made it possible to detect this molecule in a variety of clinical samples such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and bronchioalveolar lavage fluid. Detection of this molecule through several assays has been validated as an adjunct method to diagnose invasive fungal infections. With several decades of data and recent positive meta-analyses, these assays have now been sufficiently studied and are ready to enter the mainstream of diagnosis in medical mycology.

Background and Aims: The international EEsAI study group is currently developing an activity index for Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE). A potential discrepancy between patient and physician reported EoE symptoms has not been assessed yet. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate patient reported items describing their EoE activity and to compare these with the physicianʼs perception. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to 100 EoE patients in Switzerland. EoE-related symptoms dependent and independent of food intake were reported by patients. Results were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis and compared with symptoms reported by international EoE experts in Delphi rounds. Results: The questionnaire response rate was 64/100. The following items were developed by combining categories based on patients answers: food-consistency related dysphagia, frequency and severity of dysphagia, food impaction, strategies to avoid food impaction, food allergy, drinking-related retrosternal pain. The following food categories associated with dysphagia were identified: meat, rice, dry bread, French fries, raw, fibrous foods, others. Sports and psychological stress were identified as triggers for non-food intake related EoE symptoms. A good correlation was found between patient and physicianʼs reported EoE related symptoms. Conclusions: There is a good correlation between patient reported symptoms and the physicianʼs perception of clinical items as reported by international EoE experts. These patient reported outcomes will now be incorporated into the EEsAI questionnaire that measures EoE activity.

We present a review of the propensity to eat amphibians in the Barn Owl Tyto alba in Europe. Based on the analysis of 596 published studies reporting 3.32 million prey items identified in pellets, 17 869 amphibians (0.54%) were found. An analysis of 9036 amphibians identified to the species level showed that Barn Owls avoid consuming toxic species, and they are able to capture tree frogs (Hylidae) only rarely. The true frogs (Ranidae) are by far the most frequently captured amphibians followed by spadefoot toads (Pelobatidae) and Parsley frogs (Pelodytidae).
