Der Autor schlaegt eine Unterteilung der Vegetation vor, die sich auf die grossen Landschaftstypen Brasiliens bezieht. Er grenzt diese gegeneinander ab und beschreibt sie in grossen Zuegen, soweit sie bis heute bekannt sind. Er bringt einige Komentare zur Phytoklimatologie und zeigt, dass die Versuche einer floristischen Einteilung auf klimatischer Grundlage nichtbefriedigend sind; er laesst den "Klimax" nur zu als Annahme des maximalen Ausdrucks der Vegetation innerhalb eines begrenzten Gebiets. Ers bespricht kurz die regionalen geomorphologischen Studien und beschreibt zum Schluss jeden phyto-oekologischen Typ. Er beleuchtet in den Beschreibungen alle historischen Moeglichkeiten, wobei er sich auf die palaeo-Oekologie und Phylogenese stuetzt. In Suedbrasilien finden wir, abgesehen von den Waeldern der immerfeuchten Regenzonen, den Cerrado und den Campo und neben diesen den Wald der periodisch trockenen Klimate. Der Autor weist daraufhin, dass die Ausbreitung der Formationen mehr an den "Raum" als an die "Zeit" gebunden sind, dieses will besagen, dass in juengst bewachsenen Gebieten der Wald sich in jeder Richtung ausdehnt und in alt bewachsenen Regionen mit tiefen Boeden der Cerrado und in solchen mit flachen Boeden der Campo sich allseits ausbreiten. 1. Der Laubwald, der sich wahrscheinlich seit der juengeren Pluvialzeit ausbreitet, befidet sich heute noch in voller Taetigkeit: a) der Wald der Abhaenge der kristalinen Gebirge der Sued-Atlantikkueste, der schattige Haenge bedeckt und durch cyophile und phylogenetisch primitive Elemente gekennzeichnet ist, scheint die aeltere Ausbreitung darzustellen; und b) der Wald der Einzugsbecken und Kuestenebenen, der die aluvialen Gelaende einnimmt und durch heliophile und hoeher entwickelte Arten charakterisiert ist, scheint die modernere Ausbreitung zu vertreten. 2. Der Nadelwald, der dem Einzugsnetz der Hochflaech folgend sich in relativ neuer Zeit ausgebreitet hat, befindet sich ebenfalls auch heute noch in voller Taetigkeit: a) in Gebieten der Campos, neuerdings wieder bewachsen (Niederungen, Quellgruende usw), finden wir die seiner heutigen Ausbreitung; und b) die ausschliesslich erwachsenen Elemente inmitten von Laubwald zeigen sein heutigen Gebiet des Konkurrenzhampfes an. 3. Die Savannen und Campos, urspruenglich in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem geologischen Ursprung auf die sauren, armen Boeden beschraenkt, dehnen sich schnell infolge Raubbaus durch den Menschen auf neue Gebiete aus: a) zerstoerte Waldgebiete auf tiefen Sandformationen, wo der entwaldete Boden im halbfeuchten Klima der Lateritisierung beschleunigt unterliegt, sind Bildung des Cerrados ausgesetzt; b) zerstoerte Waldgebiete auf Tonformationen, wo die Erosion schnell bis zu den halbzerlegten Gesteinen fortschreitet, werden in Campo verwandelt; und c) Ackerbaugebiete und Weiden auf jedem Boden, wo periodisch gebrannt wird, sind gezwungenermassen dem "Feuer-Klimax" unterworfen. 4. Bezueglich der historischen Vergangenheit der heute von einem bestimmten Vegetationstyp bedeckten Gebiete kann nur eine Pollenanalyse der lokalen organischen Ablagerungen definitive Antwort geben.

Over the last few years, there has been a surge of work in a new field called "moral psychology", which uses experimental methods to test the psychological processes underlying human moral activity. In this paper, I shall follow this line of approach with the aim of working out a model of how people form value judgements and how they are motivated to act morally. I call this model an "affective picture": 'picture' because it remains strictly at the descriptive level and 'affective' because it has an important role for affects and emotions. This affective picture is grounded on a number of plausible and empirically supported hypotheses. The main idea is that we should distinguish between various kinds of value judgements by focusing on the sort of state of mind people find themselves in while uttering a judgement. "Reasoned judgements" are products of rational considerations and are based on preliminary acceptance of norms and values. On the contrary, "basic value judgements" are affective, primitive and non-reflective ways of assessing the world. As we shall see, this analysis has some consequences for the traditional internalism-externalism debate in philosophy; it highlights the fact that motivation is primarily linked to "basic value judgements" and that the judgements we openly defend might not have a particular effect on our actions, unless we are inclined to have an emotional attitude that conforms to them.

Based on histology, the placentae of eutherians are currently grouped in epitheliochorial, endotheliochorial and haemochorial placentae. In a haeckelian sense, the epitheliochorial contact with marked histiotrophic feeding by uterine milk is generally considered as primitive, especially since similar contacts exist in Marsupials. In contrast, the more intimate endotheliochorial and haemochorial contact, facilitating haemotrophic nutrition, is interpreted as a derived state. A cladistic analysis based on the phylogenetic relationships established by molecular analyses reveals that the basic clades are all characterized by an endotheliochorial or haemochorial placenta, and that the epitheliochorial placenta evolved at least three times in a convergent manner. This evolution may be explained by the fact that the epitheliochorial placenta in eutherians is more efficient in nutritional transfer (flow rate by exchange surface). Moreover, this arrangement may confer an advantage to the mother who can probably reduce the degree of manipulation by a genetically imprinted embryo.

La lecture chrétienne traditionnelle du cycle d'Abraham oublie souvent que le patriarche a deux fils : Ismaël et Isaac. A partir d'une enquête sur Gn 16, l'A. s'efforce de montrer que, pour les auteurs et rédacteurs de Gn 12-25, Ismaël et sa mère Hagar ne sont nullement une quantité négligeable. La version primitive de Gn 16 a été écrite par une représentante de l'aristocratie rurale en Juda au VII e S. av. J-C. Cet auteur s'oppose aux tendances nationalistes en montrant le lien profond entre Israël et ses voisins.

(Résumé de l'ouvrage) What are the relations between sociology and the different religions - Christianity with its various branches, Judaism, Islam, Oriental religions, sects and New Religious Movements ? That is the question which this work, - conceived on the occasion of the XXVth Conference of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion/Société Internationale de Sociologie des Religions (SISR) - wishes to clarify. The book retraces the varied and troubled history of these relations and also reveals how in opening up its research to other religions besides the Christan, sociology is forced to redefine the very object of its field of study. What is the religious? This question, which until recently was considered impertinent, informs this book throughout. If confronts the necessity of rethinking theories and methodological appoaches which, constructed in the context of 19th and early 20th century Western Europe, prove to be rather inadequate for encompassing contemporary religious phenomena and religious manifestations in other contexts. To these new theoretical and methodological demands is added, for the sociologist, a deontological imperative, which takes on all the more importance today as the religious provokes passionate social debate.

American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) has been increasing in Pernambuco, thus becoming an important problem for Public Health. The incindence is predominant in the region called "Zona da Mata", in the east of this state. This region corresponds geographically to the primitive area of the Atlantic forest. In order to characterize the eco-epidemiology expression of ACL in this region, two localities situated in the municipalities of Amaraji e Cortes have been selected by the criterion of higher incindence of human cases. Five stocks of patients were characterized and identified on the basis of enzyme profiles as a new variant of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis. A survey of wild and domestic animals was carried out by means of a parasitological and serological diagnosis. Through the analysis of the spleen and liver imprints, were detected amastigotes compatible with Leishmania in five Nectomys s. squamipes, five Bolomys l. pixuna, two Rattus r. alexandrinus and one Rattus r. frugivorus. For two years we carried out monthly sandflies captures using CDC light traps as well as manual captures. Lutzomyia whitmani was predominant, which accounted for 97.4 por cento of the total. These data indicate a strong evidence on the vector and the potential reservoirs of L. braziliensis in this region.

A bien des égards, comme le philosophe Emmanuel Kant l'avait déjà signalé, la manière dont nous traitons les animaux nous renvoie en miroir notre propre attitude envers nos compagnons humains. La maladie de la vache folle n'est-elle pas le résultat d'une rationalité industrielle déraisonnable et, par là même, le révélateur des dérives de la rationalité instrumentale et des menaces qui pèsent sur l'éthique ? Les perspectives ouvertes par le génie génétique et par les xénotransplantations n'annoncent-elles pas une fuite en avant dans les illusions d'une technoscience sans conscience et sans précaution ? Comment trouver un équilibre entre les intérêts des patients, les finalités de la médecine, le respect de l'animal et les réalités de l'économie ou de la politique ? Pour promouvoir une éthique à la hauteur de ces questions, faut-il abandonner tout anthropocentrisme, adopter une philosophie centrée sur la vie et le vivant (biocentrisme) prenant uniquement en compte le critère de la souffrance humaine et animale (pathocentrisme) ?Fruit d'un colloque interdisciplinaire tenu à Lausanne en mai 1999, cet ouvrage donne la parole à des chercheurs d'horizon très variés : des spécialistes de la zoologie, de l'étude du comportement animal, de la douleur animale et humaine et de l'anthropologie culturelle, des juristes, des médecins, des philosophes et des théologiens.

Fanon, Senghor, and Ela took a radical stance in criticising the structures and mechanisms of power in hegemonic situations and relations between colonial subjects and colonial masters. They aimed to liberate African societies by decolonising the mind, culture and religion of colonial subjects. In this respect, we are concerned with the continuities and ruptures of the colonial encounter and its unequal relationships. Switzerland does not have an official colonial history and yet, Swiss companies and migrants were and are part of the world's colonies. In our contribution, we question what makes an event postcolonial : in other words, how are postcolonial relations negotiated in Switzerland? We discuss this question by analysing two annual sacred journeys in Switzerland that have been invented for and by African Christians (clerics and laity) together with the leaders of the Swiss Catholic church : one to the relics of African saints in St. Maurice, canton Valais and the other to the Black Madonna, the Virgin Mary of Einsiedeln, in the canton Schwyz. These events are empowered by the performance of African choirs - their music, dance, and costumes - but to which end and in which way?

Despite opportunities for radiation provided by spatio-temporal isolation, the basic morphological plan of pulmonate snails has remained conservative. In consequence of the resulting dearth of morphological characters and their plasticity, there is a case for using biochemical characters such as exogenous chemicals released by the snails (e.g. amino acids) and their chemoreception niche as taxonomic aids to classify snails of medical importance. As these same chemicals are used by snails to distinguish conspecifics they could also be used as "environmental antibodies" in controlled release formulations (CRF's) designed to remove target snails in a specific, cost-effective and ecologically acceptable manner. The snails, surface-living bacteria, algae and macrophytic plants are considered as co-evolved, interactive modular systems with strong mutualistic elements. Recently, anthropogenic perturbations such as deforestation, and damming of flowing waters, have benefited these modules whereas others such as river canalization, acid deposition, accumulation of pesticide residues and eutrophication have harmed them. Research is needed to elucidate the factors which limit the growth of snails in primitive habitats, uninfluenced by man, as well as in those subject to harmful anthropogenic factors. The understanding thus gained could be applied to develop cost-effective primary health care strategies to reduce or prevent transmission of schistosomiasis and other water related diseases.

(Résumé de l'ouvrage) Les recherches sur l'historiographie de l'Église primitive se sont multipliées depuis des temps récents, en France comme à l'étranger, et de grands projets d'édition et de traduction arrivent actuellement à leur terme. Il a donc semblé utile de faire le point sur les travaux en cours, qu'ils aient été entrepris par des historiens de l'Antiquité tardive ou par des philologues, latinistes, hellénistes et orientalistes, par des théologiens ou par des exégètes, et d'engager une réflexion sur la manière dont s'écrivait l'histoire de l'Église et dont l'Église pensait ses origines et sa propre histoire. C'est l'ensemble de leurs travaux qui se trouve présenté dans ce volume, dont la problématique correspond à une actualité à la fois médiatique, historique et religieuse, puisque se célèbre cette année le deuxième millénaire de l'ère chrétienne - tant il est vrai que toute réflexion sur le passé est aussi (et avant tout ?) une réflexion sur le présent et sur l'avenir.

Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense can be induced to undergo apoptosis after stimulation with Con A. As cell death in these parasites is associated with de novo gene expression we have applied a differential display technique, Randomly Amplified Differential Expressed Sequence-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RADES-PCR) to the study of gene expression during Con A induced cell death in these organisms. Twenty-two differentially displayed products have been cloned and sequenced. These represent the first endogenous genes to be identified as implicated in cellular death in trypanosomatids (the most primitive eukaryote in which apoptosis has been described). Evidence for an ancestral death machinery, `proto-apoptosis' in single celled organisms is discussed.

As the first historian of Christianity, Luke's reliability is vigorously disputed among scholars. The author of the Acts is often accused of being a biased, imprecise, and anti-Jewish historian who created a distorted portrait of Paul. Daniel Marguerat tries to avoid being caught in this true/false quagmire when examining Luke's interpretation of history. Instead he combines different tools - reflection upon historiography, the rules of ancient historians and narrative criticism - to analyse the Acts and gauge the historiographical aims of their author. Marguerat examines the construction of the narrative, the framing of the plot and the characterization, and places his evaluation firmly in the framework of ancient historiography, where history reflects tradition and not documentation. This is a fresh and original approach to the classic themes of Lucan theology: Christianity between Jerusalem and Rome, the image of God, the work of the Spirit, the unity of Luke and the Acts.
