This study reports the photodegradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in aqueous solution by the photo-Fenton process using solar irradiation. The influence of solution path length, and Fe(NO3)(3) and H2O2 concentrations on the degradation of 4-CP is evaluated by response surface methodology. The degradation process was monitored by the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and the release of chloride ion. The results showed a very important role of iron concentration either for TOC removal or dechlorination. on the other hand, a negative effect of increasing solution path length on mineralization was observed, which can be compensated by increasing the iron concentration. This permits an adjustment of the iron concentration according to the irradiation exposure area and path length (depth of a tank reactor). Under optimum conditions of 1.5 mM Fe(NO3)(3), 20.0 mM H2O2 and 4.5 cm solution path length, 17 min irradiation under solar light were sufficient to reduce a 72 mg C L-1 solution of 4-CP by 91 (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. We studied here the effect of a wide range of adenosine concentration and time of preincubation, on the histamine release induced in the guinea pig mast cells by different stimulus. Adenosine (10(-5)-10(-3) M) potentiated the histamine release induced by antigen in the guinea pig heart (isolated and dispersed tissue) and lung mast cells but not induced by ionophore A23197. The potentiation caused by adenosine (10(-4) M) was maximum after 1-3 min of preincubation and is probably an extracellular effect since it was not avoided by dipyridamol (3 x 10(-7)-10(-6) M) that inhibit the uptake of adenosine. Similar potentiation was also produced by the adenosine mimetic 2-chloroadenosine (10(-5) M) and both effects were inhibited by 8-phenyltheophylline indicating an effect on the type A receptors. It is suggested that the adenosine potentiation may not be related to changes on the cyclic AMP levels. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

Heat capacities of binary aqueous solutions of different concentrations of sucrose, glucose, fructose, citric acid, malic acid, and inorganic salts were measured with a differential scanning calorimeter in the temperature range from 5degreesC to 65degreesC. Heat capacity increased with increasing water content and increasing temperature. At low concentrations, heat capacity approached that of pure water, with a less pronounced effect of temperature, and similar abnormal behavior of pure water with a minimum around 30degreesC-40degreesC. Literature data, when available agreed relatively well with experimental values. A correction factor, based on the assumption of chemical equilibrium between liquid and gas phase in the Differential Scanning Calorimeter, was proposed to correct for the water evaporation due to temperature rise. Experimental data were fitted to predictive models. Excess molar heat capacity was calculated using the Redlich-Kister equation to represent the deviation from the additive ideal model.

Starting from linear equations for the complex scalar field, the two- and three-point Green's functions are obtained in the infrared approximation. We show that the infrared singularity factorizes in the vertex function as in spinor QED, reproducing in a simple and straightforward way the result of lengthy perturbative calculations.

Fractal dimensions of grain boundary region in doped SnO2 ceramics were determined based on previously derived fractal model. This model considers fractal dimension as a measure of homogeneity of distribution of charge carriers. Application of the derived fractal model enables calculation of fractal dimension using results of impedance spectroscopy. The model was verified by experimentally determined temperature dependence of the fractal dimension of SnO2 ceramics. Obtained results confirm that the non-Debye response of the grain boundary region is connected with distribution of defects and consequently with a homogeneity of a distribution of the charge carriers. Also, it was found that C-T-1 function has maximum at temperature at which the change in dominant type of defects takes place. This effect could be considered as a third-order transition.

This paper reports on the measurements of transport properties of high crystalline quality Sn doped In2O3 nanobelts. The samples presented metallic conduction in a large range of temperatures; however, at low temperatures, the resistivity showed a slight increase and the current-voltage curves showed a tendency to saturate even in the low-voltage range. From these observations, we discuss some arguments on the possibility of low dimensional conducting channels as the main responsible for the conduction at low temperatures. Additionally, we present an alternative technique for production of low resistance ohmic contacts, which can be further used in devices' construction. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that luminal perfusion with arginine vasopressin (AVP) stimulates distal tubule secretory potassium flux (J(K)) via V1 receptors (Am J Physiol 278: F809- F816, 2000). In the present work, we investigate the cell signaling mechanism of this process.Methods. In vivo stationary microperfusion was performed in rat cortical distal tubules and luminal K was measured using double K+ resin/reference microelectrodes.Results. In control conditions, J(K) was 0.71 +/- 0.05 nmol. cm(-2).second(-1); this process was inhibited (14%) by 10(-5) mol/L 8-bromo-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), and increased by 35% with 10(-8) mol/L phorbol ester [phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), which activates protein kinase C (PKC)]. During luminal perfusion with 10(-11) mol/L AVP, J(K) increased to 0.88 +/- 0.08 nmol. cm(-2).seconds(-1). In the presence of 10(-11) mol/L AVP, J(K) was not affected by 10(-4) mol/L H89, a blocker of protein kinase A (PKA), but was inhibited (45%) by 10(-5) mol/L staurosporine, an inhibitor of PKC, and by 41% during perfusion with 5 x 10(-5) mol/L of the cell Ca2+ chelator bis (2-aminophenoxy) ethane-tetraacetic acid (BAPTA). In order to study the role of Ca2+-dependent K channels in the luminal hormonal action, the tubules were perfused with 5 mmol/L tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) or 10(-7) mol/L iberiotoxin, in the presence of AVP, and JK was significantly reduced by both agents. Iberiotoxin reduced AVP-stimulated J(K) by 36.4%, and AVP-independent J(K) (after blocking V1 receptors) by only 16%.Conclusion. The results suggest that the luminal V1-receptor effect of AVP on J(K) was mediated by the phospholipase C (PLC)/ Ca2+/PKC signaling path and not by adenylate cyclase/cAMP/PKA, therefore probably acting on maxi-potassium channels.

We present a model to study a fungi population submitted to chemical control, incorporating the fungicide application directly into the model. From that, we obtain an optimal control strategy that minimizes both the fungicide application (cost) and leaf area damaged by fungi population during the interval between the moment when the disease is detected (t = 0) and the time of harvest (t = t(f)). Initially, the parameters of the model are considered constant. Later, we consider the apparent infection rate depending on the time (and the temperature) and do some simulations to illustrate and to compare with the constant case.

Density of binary solutions and combinations of sucrose, glucose, fructose, citric acid, malic acid, pectin, and inorganic salts were measured with an oscillating tube density meter in the temperature range from 10degrees to 60degreesC, at varying concentrations. Density can be predicted with accuracy better than 5 x 10(-5) g cm(-3) using predictive equations obtained by fitting the experimental data. Available literature values agreed well with experimental data. Relations for the excess molar volume of these solutions were derived in terms of mole fraction and temperature. A thermodynamic model for the volumetric analysis of multicomponent aqueous solutions containing electrolyte and non-electrolyte compounds was also proposed. These models can be used for prediction of density of liquid food systems, specially fruit juices and beverages, based on composition and temperature, with high accuracy and without elaborate experimental work.

This paper addresses biometric identification using large databases, in particular, iris databases. In such applications, it is critical to have low response time, while maintaining an acceptable recognition rate. Thus, the trade-off between speed and accuracy must be evaluated for processing and recognition parts of an identification system. In this paper, a graph-based framework for pattern recognition, called Optimum-Path Forest (OPF), is utilized as a classifier in a pre-developed iris recognition system. The aim of this paper is to verify the effectiveness of OPF in the field of iris recognition, and its performance for various scale iris databases. The existing Gauss-Laguerre Wavelet based coding scheme is used for iris encoding. The performance of the OPF and two other - Hamming and Bayesian - classifiers, is compared using small, medium, and large-scale databases. Such a comparison shows that the OPF has faster response for large-scale databases, thus performing better than the more accurate, but slower, classifiers.
