A Digital Video Broadcast Terrestrial (DVB-T) based passive radar requires the development of an antenna array that performs satisfactorily over the entire DVB-T band. The array should require no mechanical adjustments to inter-element spacing to correspond to the DVB-T carrier frequency used for any particular measurement. This paper will describe the challenges involved in designing an antenna array with a bandwidth of 450 MHz. It will discuss the design procedure and demonstrate a number of simulated array configurations. The final configuration of the array will be shown as well as simulations of the expected performance over the desired frequency span.

The use of radars in detecting low flying, small targets is being explored for several decades now. However radar with counter-stealth abilities namely the passive, multistatic, low frequency radars are in the focus recently. Passive radar that uses Digital Video Broadcast Terrestrial (DVB-T) signals as illuminator of opportunity is a major contender in this area. A DVB-T based passive radar requires the development of an antenna array that performs satisfactorily over the entire DVB-T band. At Fraunhofer FHR, there is currently a need for an array antenna to be designed for operation over the 450-900 MHz range with wideband beamforming and null steering capabilities. This would add to the ability of the passive radar in detecting covert targets and would improve the performance of the system. The array should require no mechanical adjustments to inter-element spacing to correspond to the DVB-T carrier frequency used for any particular measurement. Such an array would have an increased flexibility of operation in different environment or locations.

The design of such an array antenna and the applied techniques for wideband beamforming and null steering are presented in the thesis. The interaction between the inter-element spacing, the grating lobes and the mutual couplings had to be carefully studied and an optimal solution was to be reached at that meets all the specifications of the antenna array for wideband applications. Directional beams, nulls along interference directions, low sidelobe levels, polarization aspects and operation along a wide bandwidth of 450-900 MHz were some of the key considerations.

This paper describes the design, implementation, and characterization of a new type of passive power splitting and combining structure for use in a differential four-way power-combining amplifier operating at E-band. In order to achieve lowest insertion loss, input and output coils inductances are resonated with shunt capacitances. Simple C-L-C and L-C networks are proposed in order to compensate inductive loading due to routing line that would otherwise introduce mismatch and increase loss. Across 78-86 GHz band, measured insertion loss is about 7 dB. Measured return losses are >10 dB from 73 GHz to 94 GHz at the input port and >9 dB from 60 GHz to 94 GHz at the output port. When integrated with driver and power amplifier cells, the simulated complete circuit exhibits 18.2 dB gain and 20.3 dBm saturated output power.

Understanding migration of cells has many implications in human physiology; some examples include developmental biology, healing, immune responses and tissue remodeling. On the other hand, invasive migration by tumor cells is pathological and is a major cause of mortality amongst cancer sufferers. Cell migration assays have been widely used to quantify potentially metastatic genes. In recent years, the use of RNAi has significantly increased the tools available in cell migration research due to its specific gene targeting for knockdown. The inability to ensure 100% transfection/transduction efficiency reduces the sensitivity of cell migration assays because cells not successfully transfected/transduced with the RNAi are also included in the calculations. This study introduces a different experimental setup mathematically expressed in our named normalized relative infected cell count (N-RICC) that analyses cell migration assays by co-expressing retrovirally transduced shRNA with fluorescence tags from a single vector. Vectors transduced into cells are visible under fluorescence, thus alleviating the problems involved with transduction efficiency by individually identifying cells with targeted genes. Designed shRNAs were targeted against a list of potentially metastatic genes in a highly migratory breast cancer cell line model, MDA-MB-231. We have successfully applied N-RICC analysis to show greater sensitivity of integrin alpha5 (ITGA5) and Ras homologue A (RhoA) in cell metastasis over conventional methods in scratch-wound assays and migration chambers assays.

Metastasis accounts largely for the high mortality rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. In this study, we performed comparative proteome analysis of primary CRC cell lines HCT-116 and its metastatic derivative E1 using 2-D DIGE. We identified 74 differentially expressed proteins, many of which function in transcription, translation, angiogenesis signal transduction, or cytoskeletal remodeling pathways, which are indispensable cellular processes involved in the metastatic cascade. Among these proteins, stathmin-1 (STMN1) was found to be highly up-regulated in E1 as compared to HCT-116 and was thus selected for further functional studies. Our results showed that perturbations in STMN1 levels resulted in significant changes in cell migration, invasion, adhesion, and colony formation. We further showed that the differential expression of STMN1 correlated with the cells' metastatic potential in other paradigms of CRC models. Using immunohistochemistry, we also showed that STMN1 was highly expressed in colorectal primary tumors and metastatic tissues as compared to the adjacent normal colorectal tissues. Furthermore, we also showed via tissue microarray analyses of 324 CRC tissues and Kaplan-Meier survival plot that CRC patients with higher expression of STMN1 have poorer prognosis.

A phenomenology of distributed passive intermodulation generation in coplanar waveguide transmission line is presented. The theoretical analysis is based upon the generalised nonlinear transmission line model, which accounts for the coupling of two propagating modes. The case of weak substrate nonlinearity is considered and the model is given qualitative verification through the mapping of passive intermodulation products generated in coplanar waveguide fabricated on a commercial laminate. Implications for future research are discussed. © 2012 IEEE.

Sirolimus-eluting stent therapy has achieved considerable success in overcoming coronary artery restenosis. However, there remain a large number of patients presenting with restenosis after the treatment, and the source of its persistence remains unclarified. Although recent evidence supports the contribution of vascular stem/progenitor cells in restenosis formation, their functional and molecular responses to sirolimus are largely unknown.

We present the first direct measurement of ultrafast charge migration in a biomolecular building block the amino acid phenylalanine. Using an extreme ultraviolet pulse of 1.5 fs duration to ionize molecules isolated in the gas phase, the location of the resulting hole was probed by a 6 fs visible/near-infrared pulse. By measuring the yield of a doubly charged ion as a function of the delay between the two pulses, the positive hole was observed to migrate to one end of the cation within 30 fs. This process is likely to originate from even faster coherent charge oscillations in the molecule being dephased by bond stretching which eventually localizes the final position of the charge. This demonstration offers a clear template for observing and controlling this phenomenon in the future.

For a long time the society in Northern Ireland has been considered in binary terms of Protestantism or Catholicism, reflecting the two majority communities. Tradition and culture have long played an important role for these communities and the latest arrival of migrants has complicated this already complex picture. Problems have arisen with respect to social attitudes with incidences of discrimination being experienced by particular groups. Clearly cohesion and positive integration is not necessarily something that flows from an appropriate legislative framework. But equally, and perhaps more optimistically, early indications are that civil society and locality are important for building positive inter-group relations. This article presents a brief overview of recent patterns and processes of migration to Northern Ireland. It is based on ongoing research into this subject that has been conducted by the author since 2005. It presents the key features of recent migration before identifying some challenges arising for our society.
