Oxidative Leaching of metals from electronic waste with solutions based on quaternary ammonium salts
Resumo:
The treatment of electric and electronic waste (WEEE) is a problem which receives ever more attention. An inadequate treatment results in harmful products ending up in the environment. This project intends to investigate the possibilities of an alternative route for recycling of metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) obtained from rejected computers. The process is based on aqueous solutions composed of an etchant, either 0.2 M CuCl2.2H2O or 0.2 M FeCl3.6H2O, and a quaternary ammonium salt (quat) such as choline chloride or chlormequat. These solutions are reminiscent of deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on quats. DES are quite similar to ionic liquids (ILs) and are used as well as alternative solvents with a great diversity of physical properties, making them attractive for replacement of hazardous, volatile solvents (e.g. VOCs). A remarkable difference between genuine DES and ILs with the solutions used in this project is the addition of rather large quantities of water. It is shown the presence of water has a lot of advantages on the leaching of metals, while the properties typical for DES still remain. The oxidizing capacities of Cu(II) stem from the existence of a stable Cu(I) component in quat based DES and thus the leaching stems from the activity of the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple. The advantage of Fe(III) in combination with DES is the fact that the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple becomes reversible, which is not true in pure water. This opens perspectives for regeneration of the etching solution. In this project the leaching of copper was studied as a function of gradual increasing water content from 0 - 100w% with the same concentration of copper chloride or iron(III) chloride at room temperature and 80ºC. The solutions were also tested on real PCBs. At room temperature a maximum leaching effect for copper was obtained with 30w% choline chloride with 0.2 M CuCl2.2H2O. The leaching effect is still stronger at 80°C, b ut of course these solutions are more energy consuming. For aluminium, tin, zinc and lead, the leaching was faster at 80ºC. Iron and nickel dissolved easily at room temperature. The solutions were not able to dissolve gold, silver, rhodium and platinum.

The main goal of this research study was the removal of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions using peanut hulls. This work was mainly focused on the following aspects: chemical characterization of the biosorbent, kinetic studies, study of the pH influence in mono-component systems, equilibrium isotherms and column studies, both in mono and tri-component systems, and with a real industrial effluent from the electroplating industry. The chemical characterization of peanut hulls showed a high cellulose (44.8%) and lignin (36.1%) content, which favours biosorption of metal cations. The kinetic studies performed indicate that most of the sorption occurs in the first 30 min for all systems. In general, a pseudo-second order kinetics was followed, both in mono and tri-component systems. The equilibrium isotherms were better described by Freundlich model in all systems. Peanut hulls showed higher affinity for copper than for nickel and zinc when they are both present. The pH value between 5 and 6 was the most favourable for all systems. The sorbent capacity in column was 0.028 and 0.025 mmol g-1 for copper, respectively in mono and tri-component systems. A decrease of capacity for copper (50%) was observed when dealing with the real effluent. The Yoon-Nelson, Thomas and Yan’s models were fitted to the experimental data, being the latter the best fit.

The oxidative behavior of heroin in aqueous solution is reported. In order to identify its oxidation peaks, several metabolites, 6-monoacetylmorphine, 3-monoacetylmorphine and norheroin, were synthesized and their electrochemical behavior studied using differential pulse voltammetry. The anodic waves observed for heroin correspond to the oxidation of the tertiary amine group and its follow-up product (secondary amine), and to the oxidation of the phenolic group obtained from hydrolysis, at alkaline pHs, of the 3-acetyl group. The results enabled a new oxidative mechanism for heroin to be proposed in which a secondary amine, norheroin, and an aldehyde are obtained. The voltammetric behavior of 6-monoacetylmorphine and morphine was found to be similar demonstrating that the presence of an acetyl substituent on the 6-hydroxy group does not have a relevant influence on the peak potential of the wave resulting from oxidation of the 3-phenolic group.

The TEM family of enzymes has had a crucial impact on the pharmaceutical industry due to their important role in antibiotic resistance. Even with the latest technologies in structural biology and genomics, no 3D structure of a TEM- 1/antibiotic complex is known previous to acylation. Therefore, the comprehension of their capability in acylate antibiotics is based on the protein macromolecular structure uncomplexed. In this work, molecular docking, molecular dynamic simulations, and relative free energy calculations were applied in order to get a comprehensive and thorough analysis of TEM-1/ampicillin and TEM-1/amoxicillin complexes. We described the complexes and analyzed the effect of ligand binding on the overall structure. We clearly demonstrate that the key residues involved in the stability of the ligand (hot-spots) vary with the nature of the ligand. Structural effects such as (i) the distances between interfacial residues (Ser70−Oγ and Lys73−Nζ, Lys73−Nζ and Ser130−Oγ, and Ser70−Oγ−Ser130−Oγ), (ii) side chain rotamer variation (Tyr105 and Glu240), and (iii) the presence of conserved waters can be also influenced by ligand binding. This study supports the hypothesis that TEM-1 suffers structural modifications upon ligand binding.

This study on middle Miocene mammalian faunas from Tagus'basin deals particularly with some small mammals hitherto undescribed from Portugal, including a new Glirid (Paraglirulus scalabicensis nov. sp.); it allows an accurate datation by biostratigraphical standards, Megacricetodon crusafonti, Fahlbuschia darocensis, Cricetodon jotae being characteristic of mammalian MN6 unit, thus their age is nearly that of Sansan and Manchones (however the presence of Peridyromys hamadryas and Lagopsis verus do suggest, amidst this biozone, a somewhat later age than Sansan's); it contributes with indirect correlation data with marine formations, as underlying oyster-bearing beds most probably are in correspondance to the apogee of the same transgression that deposed near Lisbon ”schlier" facies from VI-a division (Serravalian, Blow's zones 10-13, Globorotalia meyeri zone); the diversity of mammalian assemblages is surely related to an environement with varied biotopes, whose characterisation becomes easier if account is taken of the preceding papers on mollusks (G. Truc) and Cyprinid fishes (J. Gaudant), and also according to some unpublished paleobotanical data (J. Pais). A table with a synthesis of all paleontological data so far known is presented.

Diethyldithiocarbamate (ditiocarb), a metabolite of the old anti-alcoholic drug disulfiram (Antabuse), forms proteasome-inhibiting metal complexes with copper or zinc that suppress cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. The drug has been used in a clinical trial (NCT00742911) along with copper gluconate as a dietary supplement in patients with cancer spreading to the liver. In this study, we demonstrate the effect of synthetic complexes of disulfiram with four various metals (Mn, Fe, Cr and Cu) used as food supplements. These complexes may be spontaneously formed in the blood during the use of disulfiram with divalent metals and thus may suppress the growth of cancer in vivo. The cytotoxic effect of the compounds and the compounds' ability to inhibit the cellular proteasome were tested in the osteosarcoma cell line U2OS. After 48 h, copper and manganese complexes exhibited cytotoxic effect on the cell line, in sharp contrast to both iron and chromium complexes. A series of six new mixed-ligand dinuclear Mn(II, II) complexes of three different hydrazone Schiff bases (H3L1, H3L2 and H3L3), derived from condensation of the aromatic acid hydrazides benzohydrazide, 2-aminobenzohydrazide or 2-hydroxybenzohydrazide, with 2,3-dihydroxy benzaldehyde, respectively, is reported. Reactions of Mn(NO3)(2) center dot 4H(2)O with the H3L1-3 compounds, in the presence of pyridine (1 : 1 : 1 mole ratio), in methanol at room temperature, yield [Mn(H2L1)(py)(H2O)](2)(NO3)(2) center dot 2H(2)O (1 center dot 2H(2)O), [Mn(H2L2)(py)(CH3OH)](2)(NO3)(2) center dot 4H(2)O (2 center dot 4H(2)O) and [Mn(H2L3)(py)(H2O)](2)(NO3)(2) (3) respectively, whereas the use of excess pyridine yields complexes with two axially coordinated pyridine molecules at each Mn(II) centre, viz. [Mn(H2L1)(py)(2)] 2(NO3)(2) center dot H2O (4 center dot H2O), [Mn(H2L2)(py) H-O (6 center dot 2CH(3)OH), respectively. In all the complexes, the (H2L1-3)-ligand coordinates in the keto form. Complexes 1 center dot 2H(2)O, 2 center dot 4H(2)O, 4 center dot H2O, 5 center dot 2H(2)O and 6 center dot 2CH(3)OH are characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes 1, 2 and 6, having different coordination environments, have been selected for variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements to examine the nature of magnetic interaction between magnetically coupled Mn(II) centres and also for exploration of the catalytic activity towards microwave assisted oxidation of alcohols. A yield of 81% (acetophenone) is obtained using a maximum of 0.4% molar ratio of catalyst relative to the substrate in the presence of TEMPO and in aqueous basic solution, under mild conditions.

fac-[MBr(CO)(3)(pypzH)] (M = Mn, Re; pypzH = (3-(2-pyridyl) pyrazole) complexes are prepared from fac[ MBr(CO)(3)(NCMe)(2)] and pypzH. The result of their deprotonation depends on the metallic substrate: the rhenium complex affords cleanly the bimetallic compound [fac-{Re(CO)(3)(mu(2)-pypz)}] 2 (mu(2)-pypz = mu(2)-3-(2pyridyl-. 1N) pyrazolate-2. 1N), which was crystallographically characterized, whereas a similar manganese complex was not detected. When two equivalents of pyridylpyrazolate are used, polymetallic species [fac-M(CO) 3(mu(2)-pypz)(mu(3)-pypz) M'] (mu(3)-pypz = mu(3)-3-(2-pyridyl-kappa N-1) pyrazolate-1 kappa 2N, N: 2. 1N:; M = Mn, M' = Li, Na, K; M = Re, M' = Na) are obtained. The crystal structures of the manganese carbonylate complexes were determined. The lithium complex is a monomer containing one manganese and one lithium atom, whereas the sodium and potassium complexes are dimers and reveal an unprecedented coordination mode for the bridging 3-(2-pyridyl) pyrazolate ligand, where the nitrogen of the pyridyl fragment and the nitrogen-1 of pyrazolate are chelated to manganese atoms, and each nitrogen-2 of pyrazolate is coordinated to two alkaline atoms. The polymetallic carbonylate complexes are unstable in solution and evolve spontaneously to [fac-{Re(CO) 3(mu(2)-pypz)}](2) or to the trimetallic paramagnetic species [MnII(mu(2)-pypz) 2{fac-{MnI(CO) 3(mu(2)-pypz)}(2)}]. The related complex cis-[MnCl2(pypzH)(2)] was also synthesized and structurally characterized. The electrochemical behavior of the new homo-and heteropolymetallic 3-(2-pyridyl) pyrazolate complexes has been studied and details of their redox properties are reported.

A series of mono(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)metal-(II) complexes with nitro-substituted thienyl acetylide ligands of general formula [M(eta(5)-C5H5)(L)(C C{C4H2S}(n)NO2)] (M = Fe, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, n = 1,2; M = Ru, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, 2 PPh3, n = 1, 2; M = Ni, L = PPh3, n = 1, 2) has been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of the complexes was explored by cyclic voltammetry. Quadratic hyperpolarizabilities (beta) of the complexes have been determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements at 1500 nm. The effect of donor abilities of different organometallic fragments on the quadratic hyperpolarizabilities was studied and correlated with spectroscopic and electrochemical data. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations were employed to get a better understanding of the second-order nonlinear optical properties in these complexes. In this series, the complexity of the push pull systems is revealed; even so, several trends in the second-order hyperpolarizability can still be recognized. In particular, the overall data seem to indicate that the existence of other electronic transitions in addition to the main MLCT clearly controls the effectiveness of the organometallic donor ability on the second-order NLO properties of these push pull systems.

The reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol with 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane in the presence of MnCl2 in a 1:1:2 molar ratio in methanol afforded a dinuclear -chlorido-bridged manganese(II) complex of the macrocyclic [2+2] condensation product (H2L), namely, [Mn2Cl2(H2L)(HL)]Cl center dot 3H(2)O (1). The latter afforded a new compound, namely, [Mn2Cl2(H2L)(2)][MnCl4]center dot 4CH(3)CN center dot 0.5CHCl(3 center dot)0.4H(2)O (2), after recrystallisation from 1:1 CHCl3/CH3CN. The co-existence of the free and complexed azomethine groups, phenolato donors, mu-chlorido bridges, and the disiloxane unit were well evidenced by ESI mass spectrometry and FTIR spectroscopy and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic measurements revealed an antiferromagnetic interaction between the two high-spin (S = 5/2, g = 2) manganese(II) ions through the mu-chlorido bridging ligands. The electrochemical behaviour of 1 and 2 has been studied, and details of their redox properties are reported. Both compounds act as catalysts or catalyst precursors in the solvent-free low-power microwave-assisted oxidation of selected secondary alcohols, for example, 1-phenylethanol, cyclohexanol, 2- and 3-octanol, to the corresponding ketones in the absence of solvent. The highest yield of 72% was achieved for 1-phenylethanol by using a maximum of 1% molar ratio of catalyst relative to substrate.

A new family of "Fe-II(eta(5)-C5H5)" half sandwich compounds bearing a N-heteroaromatic ligand coordinated to the iron center by a nitrile functional group has been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. X-ray analysis of single crystal was achieved for complexes 1 and 3, which crystallized in the monoclinic P2(1)/c and monoclinic P2(1)/n space groups, respectively. Studies of interaction of these five new complexes with plasmid pBR322 DNA by atomic force microscopy showed very strong and different types of interaction. Antiproliferative tests were examined on human leukemia cancer cells (HL-60) using the MTT assay, and the IC50 values revealed excellent antiproliferative activity compared to cisplatin.
