This is a cross-sectional study with a randomized choice of individuals aiming at studying the validity of the Brazilian biological exposure limits applied to lead level in the blood (PbB) and delta-aminolevulinic acid in the urine (ALAU), which are 60 μ/dl and 10 mg/g.creat., respectively. Thus, twenty workers, whose PbB and ALAU values have been below these limits over the past two years, were selected at random at a battery plant in the State of S. Paulo, Brazil. The workers were submitted to a variation of the WHO Neurobehavioral Core Test Battery. The results were compared with those obtained for workers of a control group also chosen at random. The lead workers showed memory, mood and motor coordination disorders. Comparing these results with those obtained from the control group, a significant difference was observed (p-value < 0.02). The results indicate that the Brazilian biological exposure limits above should be reconsidered.

The experiment with pheasants in initial growth phase (1 to 35 days of age), which had as its objective evaluating the nutritional needs of pheasants in the growth phase as to protein levels in the diets, was conducted on a pheasant farm located at Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. Small pheasants were used, which were submitted to isocaloric diets containing 26%, 28% and 30% of crude protein. The experimental design was totally random with four repetitions of 30 birds per parcel, totaling 360 birds. The results showed that a 30% crude protein level should be recommended for pheasants in the growth phase (1 to 35 days of age).

The effect of Mg levels in nutrient solution upon root, stem, leaf, fruit and total dry matter production of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Carioca) was studied. Bean plants were grown in Hoagland & Arnon n. 2 solution modified to obtain 2.4, 24.3, 48.6, 72.9 and 97.2 ppm of Mg. The experimental design was a split-plot factorial replicated three times with five Mg levels and five samplings which were done fortnightly. Results were compared with those observed in plants submitted to a nutrient solution with 48.6 ppm of Mg concentration, considered the ideal Mg content. Only a mild prejudicial effect was observed with Mg excessive levels. Stem, leaves and total dry matter were higher when 2.4 ppm were used, suggesting this level as the concentration chosen for the culture of common bean.

It were analyzed Eucalyptus grandis trees of 8 years old in the forest group of Duraflora S/A, with different annual increments based on volume, to the related studies of specific gravity values based on productivity indexes. The methodology used in analysis of specific gravity was the gamma-ray attenuation technique of Americium-241. The Eucalyptus grandis showed a specific gravity decreasing with the increasing of parcel productivity. For a gain of 3,5 m3 in productivity there was a decreasing of 1% in specific gravity. Nevertheless, it was not observed correlation between specific gravity and basal area in a same parcel. The present work stands out too, some of the difficulties found with relation to wood specific gravity determinations and emphasize the importance of take samples in the form of full rounded plates in three or four relative positions in the tree.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the different levels of manganese and phosphorus (P) on the performance and eggshell quality and on determined blood constituents of 96 laying hens Hy-Line W36, with 60 weeks of age, distributed in 24 lots with four hens each. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a factorial arrangement (3x2), manganese levels (70, 140 and 210 ppm) and total phosphorus levels (.35 and .55%), totalizing six treatments with four replicates each. The experimental diets were isoproteic (16.0% CP), isocaloric (2800 kcal ME/kg), isocalcium (4.0% Ca) and isosodium (.16% Na). The manganese levels did not alter the production and eggshell quality. However, when hens were fed diets containing .35% of total P, there were observed decreases in the egg production, egg weight and egg mass, without alterations in eggshell quality characteristics. The supplemental manganese levels were not effective to improve eggshell quality at the final phase of production. The total phosphorus level of .35% was inadequate for the laying hens to express the normal production characteristics.

Uranium-lead zircon ages between 660 and 640 Ma, obtained from a series of calc-alkaline orthogneisses and plutons in southeast Brazil's Central Mantiqueira Province, suggest that a significant period of magmatism occurred in this region prior to the collisional assembly of West Gondwana (presently constrained in the region between ca. 625 and 580 Ma). While the nature of this earlier magmatism is presently unclear, some preliminary Sm-Nd data suggest that these magmas were not solely derived from the Paleoproterozoic lithosphere, but appear to represent hybrid products of Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic sources. As such hybrid mixtures have been most commonly observed in continental are settings, it is possible that the 660 to 640 Ma magmatism represents are magmatism that resulted from subduction of Neoproterozoic oceanic crust during early precollisional convergence and closure of a branch of either the Adamastor or Goianides oceans.

The morphological, mechanical and rheological properties of nylon 6/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene blends compatibilized with MMA-MA [poly(methyl methacrylate-comaleic anhydride)] copolymers were studied. A twin screw extruder was used for melt-blended the polymers and the injection moulding process was used to mold the samples. The main focus was on nylon 6/ ABS blends compatibilized with one MMA-MA copolymer. This copolymer has PMMA segments that appear to be miscible with the styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) phase of ABS and the anhydride groups can react with amine end groups of the nylon 6 (Ny6) to form graft copolymers at the interface between Ny6 and ABS rich phases. Tensile and impact and morphological properties were enhanced by the incorporation of this copolymer. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed that the ABS domains are finely dispersed in nylon 6 matrix and led to the lowest ductile-brittle transition temperatures and highest impact properties. It can be concluded that the MMA-MA copolymer is an efficient alternative for the reactive compatibilization and can be used as a compatibilizer for nylon 6/ABS blends.© 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the phenotypical plasticity of external morphology of Lippia alba in response to two luminosity level and four organic-mineral fertilization level. The morphological plasticity was quantified by the phenotypic variation intensity of the morphological characters (ramifications, leafs, inflorescences, flowers, height, stem diameter, leaf blade length, foliar blade breadth and space between branches). It was possible to verify significant effect as a consequence of luminosity and substratum variations. However, the interaction between these factors was not observed suggesting that they act independently. The majority of characters revealed high magnitude of phenotypical plasticity. The results obtained suggest that luminosity intensity and substratum quality contribute to amplify the phenotypical expression of Lippia alba.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of recombinant human erythropoietin (Epho) on carbohydrate metabolism, parathyroid hormone, calcium ionic, zinc, prolactin and blood pressure (BP) in chronic renal failure treated by hemodialysis. Methods: Ten patients in hemodialysis were followed during 24 weeks in two phases: 12 weeks pre-Epho (BP was measured pre and post hemodialysis sessions) and 12 weeks post-Epho (BP was measured as above and also the blood levels of glucose, insulin, parathyroid hormone, calcium ionic, prolactin, and zinc). Results: Patients were 39.8±8.5 y, 50% males. Hematocrit and hemoglobin presented a significant increase four weeks after Epho (22.3±2.3 to 28.1±2.6% and 7.4±0.8 to 9.4±0.9 g/dL, p<0.05). BP (mmHg) and weight pre-Epho: 158±99 and 59±13 (before hemodialysis), 147±96 and 55±13 (after hemo) and post-Epho: 161±100 and 59±13 (before hemo) 155±101 and 56±12 (after hemo) were all not statistically different in any moment. There are also no difference pre and post-Epho in fast glucose (91.8±6.5 and 90.8±6.1 mg/dL, p>0.05), parathyroid hormone (341.4±249.3 and 515.7±310 pg/ mL), calcium ionic (3,66±0.63 and 3.76±0.45 mmol/L), prolactin (males: 327±144.1 and 298.1 ±145.2 μg/mL; females: 666.2±426.6 and 659±395.3 μg/mL) and zinc (median of 0.73 and 0.71 μg\L). Basal insulin was lower after Epho (median of 9.1 to 3.8 μg/mL, p<0.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that recombinant human erythropoietin was effective to improve the anemia and the carbohydrate metabolism in patients with chronic renal failure treated by hemodialysis. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editors. The present study had as its objective the assessment of the possible effects of hydric stress on the growth, physiological characteristics of two different genetic materials from Eucalyptus urograndis. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas of UNESP, campus Botucatu from March to July, 2005. The hydric management was established based on the soil water potential. Two water levels were established, doing the evapotranspired water replacement by pot weighing. Two clones were used, Eucalyptus urograndis 105 and 433, being the first one more resistant to the hydric deficit and the 433 more sensitive to stress. The study was made from a 2×2 factorial (two levels of water × two genetic materials). For the hydric management, the plants were irrigated when they reached a soil water potential of -0.03 MPa or -1.5 MPa. The assessments made were: diffusive water vapor of stomato, transpiration, leaf temperature and leaf water potential. The physiological evaluations throughout the day, in the end of the experiment. Treatments without hydric stress had a higher performance in all studied characteristics, but the clones had no influence. The stomatic resistance followed the potentials, showing higher values in the treatments submitted to hydric deficiency, more intensely for clone 433, being that this also happened with the leaf water potential. The transpiration also followed the leaf water potential and the stomatic resistance more intensely for clone 105 both comparing stressed plants and non-stressed plants. Consequently, the leaf temperatures had higher values for clone 433 on the stressed treatment. Thus, it can be concluded that there was a better performance in plants kept on a soil water potential of -0.03 MPa and a higher resistance to hydric stress for clone 105.

The objective of this research was to study the effects of five different treatments of grass (Brachiaria decumbens) straw mulch on common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.): 0% (0 t.ha-1), 25% (2,25 t.ha-1), 50% (4,5 t.ha-1), 75% (6,75 t. ha-1) and 100% (9,0 t/ha) designed by randomized blocks, with four replicates. The irrigation was applied when minimum soil water potential were reached about - 30kPa. The water management based on tensiometers and soil water characteristic curve. A microsprinkler irrigation system was used. The experiment was set up at the Experimental Station of Embrapa Rice and Bean (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária Arroz e Feijão) at Santo Antonio de Goiás, Brazil, in a Dark - Red Latosol soil. The results showed: the bean yield and his components were not affected by treatments, except grain number/pod,. The mulch increased the water use efficiency and, consequently, decreased the number of irrigations when the mulch reached more than 50% straw mulch. The treatment with 100% of mulching presented the largest leaf area index and dry matter accumulation was not affected by mulching.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the ipê-roxo (Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart.) Standl). seedlings behavior in different substrates and irrigation levels and also study the use of urban waste compost in the substrates. The experiment was conducted in the agricultural engineering department at the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias - UNESP, Campus de Jaboticabal, SP. The experimental design used was the completely randomized with 30 treats and 2 replicates, in a 15× 2 factorial arrangement [15 substrates and 2 irrigation levels (100% and 150% of evapotranspiration)]. The substrates were composed by different material combinations: urban waste, Plantmax, tanned cattle manure, vermiculite and soil. For the study of the seedlings development, the following characteristics were evaluated: the seedlings height (H) and stem diameter (D). Evaluations (H and D) were made on 90, 105, 120, 135 and 150 days after sowing. The statistical analysis showed significant differences between the irrigation levels. According to the results, we can conclude that urban waste compost did not increase Blake development. For tested irrigation levels, the statistical analysis showed significant differences with better results for the 150% ET irrigation level compared to 100% ET.
