In the present study, we evaluated the mechanisms underpinning the hypertension observed in freely moving juvenile rats submitted to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). Male juvenile Wistar rats (20-21 days old) were submitted to CIH (6% O(2) for 40 s every 9 min, 8 h day(-1)) for 10 days while control rats were maintained in normoxia. Prior to CIH, baseline systolic arterial pressure (SAP), measured indirectly, was similar between groups (86 +/- 1 versus 87 +/- 1 mmHg). After exposure to CIH, SAP recorded directly was higher in the CIH (n = 28) than in the control group (n = 29; 131 +/- 3 versus 115 +/- 2 mmHg, P < 0.05). This higher SAP of CIH rats presented an augmented power of oscillatory components at low (10.05 +/- 0.91 versus 5.02 +/- 0.63 mmHg(2), P < 0.05) and high (respiratory-related) frequencies (12.42 +/- 2.46 versus 3.28 +/- 0.61 mmHg(2), P < 0.05) in comparison with control animals. In addition, rats exposed to CIH also exhibited an increased cardiac baroreflex gain (-3.11 +/- 0.08 versus -2.1 +/- 0.10 beats min(-1) mmHg(-1), P < 0.0001), associated with a shift to the right of the operating point, in comparison with control rats. Administration of hexamethonium (ganglionic blocker, i.v.), injected after losartan (angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist) and [beta-mercapto-beta,beta-cyclopenta-methylenepropionyl(1), O-Me-Tyr(2), Arg(8)]-vasopressin (vasopressin type 1a receptor antagonist), produced a larger depressor response in the CIH (n = 8) than in the control group (n = 9; -49 +/- 2 versus -39 +/- 2 mmHg, P < 0.05). Fifteen days after the cessation of exposure to CIH, the mean arterial pressure of CIH rats returned to normal levels. The data indicate that the sympathetic-mediated hypertension observed in conscious juvenile rats exposed to CIH is not secondary to a reduction in cardiac baroreflex gain and exhibits a higher respiratory modulation, indicating that an enhanced respiratory-sympathetic coupling seems to be the major factor contributing to hypertension in rats exposed to CIH.

The magnitude of the basic reproduction ratio R(0) of an epidemic can be estimated in several ways, namely, from the final size of the epidemic, from the average age at first infection, or from the initial growth phase of the outbreak. In this paper, we discuss this last method for estimating R(0) for vector-borne infections. Implicit in these models is the assumption that there is an exponential phase of the outbreaks, which implies that in all cases R(0) > 1. We demonstrate that an outbreak is possible, even in cases where R(0) is less than one, provided that the vector-to-human component of R(0) is greater than one and that a certain number of infected vectors are introduced into the affected population. This theory is applied to two real epidemiological dengue situations in the southeastern part of Brazil, one where R(0) is less than one, and other one where R(0) is greater than one. In both cases, the model mirrors the real situations with reasonable accuracy.

This work provides experimental phase diagram of mitotane, a drug used in the chemotherapy treatment of adrenocortical carcinoma, in compressed and/or supercritical CO(2). The synthetic-static method in a high-pressure variable-volume view cell coupled with a transmitted-light intensity probe was used to measure the solid-fluid (SF) equilibrium data. The phase equilibrium experiments were determined in temperature ranging from (298.2 to 333.1) K and pressure up to 22 MPa. Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR-EoS) with classical mixing rule was used to correlate the experimental data. Excellent agreement was found between experimental and calculated values. All cells require inorganic sulfate for normal function. Sulfate is among the most important macronutrients; in cells and is the fourth most abundant anion in human plasma (300 muM). Sulfate is the major sulfur source in many organisms, and because it is a hydrophilic anion that cannot passively cross the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, all cells require a mechanism for sulfate influx and efflux to ensure an optimal supply of sulfate in the body. The class of proteins involved in moving sulfate into or out of cells is called sulfate transporters. To date, numerous sulfate transporters have been identified in tissues and cells from many origins. These include the renal sulfate transporters NaSi-1 and sat-1, the ubiquitously expressed diastrophic dysplasia sulfate transporter DTDST, the intestinal sulfate transporter DRA that is linked to congenital chloride diarrhea, and the erythrocyte anion exchanger AE1. These transporters have only been isolated in the last 10-15 years, and their physiological roles and contributions to body sulfate homeostasis are just now beginning to be determined. This review focuses on the structural and functional properties of mammalian sulfate transporters and highlights some of regulatory mechanisms that control their expression in vivo, under normal physiological and pathophysiological states.

1. The past 15 years has seen the emergence of a new field of neuroscience research based primarily on how the immune system and the central nervous system can interact. A notable example of this interaction occurs when peripheral inflammation, infection or tissue injury activates the hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). 2. During such assaults, immune cells release the pro- inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha into the general circulation. 3. These cytokines are believed to act as mediators for HPA axis activation. However, physical limitations of cytokines impede their movement across the blood-brain barrier and, consequently, it has been unclear as to precisely how and where IL-1beta signals cross into the brain to trigger HPA axis activation. 4. Evidence from recent anatomical and functional studies suggests two neuronal networks may be involved in triggering HPA axis activity in response to circulating cytokines. These are catecholamine cells of the medulla oblongata and the circumventricular organs (CVO). 5. The present paper examines the role of CVO in generating HPA axis responses to pro-inflammatory cytokines and culminates with a proposed model based on cytokine signalling primarily involving the area postrema and catecholamine cells in the ventrolateral and dorsal medulla.

A new wavelet-based method for solving population balance equations with simultaneous nucleation, growth and agglomeration is proposed, which uses wavelets to express the functions. The technique is very general, powerful and overcomes the crucial problems of numerical diffusion and stability that often characterize previous techniques in this area. It is also applicable to an arbitrary grid to control resolution and computational efficiency. The proposed technique has been tested for pure agglomeration, simultaneous nucleation and growth, and simultaneous growth and agglomeration. In all cases, the predicted and analytical particle size distributions are in excellent agreement. The presence of moving sharp fronts can be addressed without the prior investigation of the characteristics of the processes. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Unit-efficiency homodyne detection of the resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom collapses the quantum state of the atom to a stochastically moving point on the Bloch sphere. Recently, Hofmann, Mahler, and Hess [Phys. Rev. A 57, 4877 (1998)] showed that by making part of the coherent driving proportional to the homodyne photocurrent one can stabilize the state to any point on the bottom-half of the sphere. Here we reanalyze their proposal using the technique of stochastic master equations, allowing their results to be generalized in two ways. First, we show that any point on the upper- or lower-half, but not the equator, of the sphere may be stabilized. Second, we consider nonunit-efficiency detection, and quantify the effectiveness of the feedback by calculating the maximal purity obtainable in any particular direction in Bloch space.

If nonprofit organisations are moving towards more market oriented ways of operating, is this changing the traditional meanings and value of commitments associated with their activities? This article discusses the findings of a research project conducted by the University of Queensland into the impact that changes in government policies are having on the community services sector, in particular disability services. The values and belief systems traditionally associated with the sector were found to be fundamentally unaltered.

The monitoring of infection control indicators including hospital-acquired infections is an established part of quality maintenance programmes in many health-care facilities. However, surveillance data use can be frustrated by the infrequent nature of many infections. Traditional methods of analysis often provide delayed identification of increasing infection occurrence, placing patients at preventable risk. The application of Shewhart, Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) and Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) statistical process control charts to the monitoring of indicator infections allows continuous real-time assessment. The Shewhart chart will detect large changes, while CUSUM and EWMA methods are more suited to recognition of small to moderate sustained change. When used together, Shewhart and EWMA methods are ideal for monitoring bacteraemia and multiresistant organism rates. Shewhart and CUSUM charts are suitable for surgical infection surveillance.

The personal computer revolution has resulted in the widespread availability of low-cost image analysis hardware. At the same time, new graphic file formats have made it possible to handle and display images at resolutions beyond the capability of the human eye. Consequently, there has been a significant research effort in recent years aimed at making use of these hardware and software technologies for flotation plant monitoring. Computer-based vision technology is now moving out of the research laboratory and into the plant to become a useful means of monitoring and controlling flotation performance at the cell level. This paper discusses the metallurgical parameters that influence surface froth appearance and examines the progress that has been made in image analysis of flotation froths. The texture spectrum and pixel tracing techniques developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre are described in detail. The commercial implementation, JKFrothCam, is one of a number of froth image analysis systems now reaching maturity. In plants where it is installed, JKFrothCam has shown a number of performance benefits. Flotation runs more consistently, meeting product specifications while maintaining high recoveries. The system has also shown secondary benefits in that reagent costs have been significantly reduced as a result of improved flotation control. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Individuals in cooperatively breeding species face a complex set of decisions when they reach reproductive maturity. During an 8-year study, we examined the histories of 214 Tasmanian native hens (Gallinula mortierii) from hatching to examine the strategies they used to acquire breeding positions and the reproductive success they experienced in those breeding positions. Two-thirds of young delayed dispersal from their natal groups for at least a year. Ecological constraints were a partial cause of delayed dispersal; high-quality territories were rare and remained occupied due to high adult survivorship. There were also clear benefits of philopatry. Individuals that inherited breeding positions on their natal territories gained better quality positions and experienced higher reproductive success in their first breeding attempts than did individuals who dispersed to other groups. Multivariate analyses showed that the method of acquisition of breeding positions was the only factor significantly related to the quality of the breeding positions attained. Males were more likely to inherit breeding positions in their natal groups than were females. The compositions of individuals' natal groups had no effect on whether they inherited breeding positions or dispersed. In contrast, the compositions of groups did appear to affect whether other birds dispersed into them, with birds rarely moving into groups that contained breeders or nonbreeders of the same sex as the potential dispersers. Short-term removals of breeders confirmed this finding. These results suggest that both ecological constraints and benefits of philopatry explain delayed dispersal in this species.

A new algorithm has been developed for smoothing the surfaces in finite element formulations of contact-impact. A key feature of this method is that the smoothing is done implicitly by constructing smooth signed distance functions for the bodies. These functions are then employed for the computation of the gap and other variables needed for implementation of contact-impact. The smoothed signed distance functions are constructed by a moving least-squares approximation with a polynomial basis. Results show that when nodes are placed on a surface, the surface can be reproduced with an error of about one per cent or less with either a quadratic or a linear basis. With a quadratic basis, the method exactly reproduces a circle or a sphere even for coarse meshes. Results are presented for contact problems involving the contact of circular bodies. This paper analyzes a dual economy consisting of urban market areas and less developed rural areas with or without local markets. Urban areas have better opportunities for earnings and education than rural areas. Rural families choose whether to move to urban areas at costs that differ from location to location. As per capita output grows relative to the moving cost, urbanization proceeds, leading to lower fertility, more investments in human and physical capital per child relative to output per worker, and faster economic growth. These impacts are stronger if rural areas have no access to markets.

Much of the research on teachers' work is informed by role theory, that assumes teachers' identity is largely ascribed. When there are inconsistencies in teachers' and others' expectations for different occupational roles such as physical education teacher and sports coach, 'role conflict' is said to occur. This stud), sought to investigate if role conflict was a major concern for Australian physical education teacher/coaches. Findings, informed by case studies with five teacher/coaches, challenge the assumption that moving between professional responsibilities causes role conflict. Rather, in moving across contexts, the physical education teachers managed inconsistencies in ways that resulted in positive and rawarding work experiences.
