The results of a study of the oxidative mineralisation of 4-CP by oxygen, sensitised by thin films of Degussa P25 TiO2, are reported. The films are used under conditions in which the kinetics of photomineralisation are independent of mass transfer effects and stable towards repeated irradiation. Using a TiO2 film, the process goes through the same mechanism as a TiO2 dispersion, generating the same intermediates, namely: 4-chlorocatechol and hydroquinone. The kinetics of photomineralisation show clear differences between a TiO2 film and a dispersion. With TiO2 films the initial rate of photomineralisation is strongly dependent upon photocatalyst loading, (units; g dm(-3)) reaching a distinct maximum, which appears to be associated with the formation of a monolayer of aggregated particles - the diameter of the aggregated particles is estimated as 0.44 mu m. A simple 2D model is presented to help illustrate the features of such a system. With TiO2 dispersions the rate usually reaches a plateau at ca. 0.5 g dm(-3) of TiO2. For TiO2 films the initial rate depends directly upon the incident light intensity, implying that the photocatalytically active particles are under low illumination conditions, partially shielded by the other particles making up each aggregated particle. In contrast, with TiO2 dispersions R-i depends upon I-0.64, implying that the different light intensities used spanned both the high (R(i)proportional to I-1/2) and low (R(i)proportional to I) intensity kinetic regions. The kinetics of photomineralisation of 4-CP, sensitised by TiO2 films obey the same Langmuir-Hinshelwood expressions as found in most semiconductor photocatalyst work conducted with TiO2 dispersions. However, in a study of the variation R-i as a function of [4-CP] and [O-2] the values for the maximum rates were larger, and those for the apparent Langmuir adsorption coefficients were smaller, than those found for TiO2 dispersions. A set of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium alkanesulfonate ionic liquids, [C(n)mim][CkSO3], formed by the variation of the alkyl chain lengths both in the cation and the anion (n = 1-6, 8, or 10; k = 1-4, or 6), was synthesised, with sixteen of them being novel. The ionic liquids were characterised by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Their viscosities and densities as a function of temperature, as well as melting points and decomposition temperatures, were determined. The molecular volumes, both experimental and calculated, were found to depend linearly on the sum (n + k).

The pH-dependent fluorescence behavior of two regioisomeric 'receptor(1)-spacer(1)-fluorophore-spacer(2)-receptor(2)' systems 1 and 2 in micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate show that photoinduced electron transfer (PET) only occurs from the amine group connected to the 4-amino position of the aminonaphthalimide fluorophore in both cases. This demonstrates the directing influence of the photogenerated electric field within the aminonaphthalimide excited state on the electron transfer process. Since path-selectivity of PET is also known within the membrane-bound photosynthetic reaction center in bacteria, its origins may be illuminated by the simple experiments described here. The role of dispersion or van de Waals (VDW) interactions in imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids is studied within the framework of density functional theory, using a recently developed non-empirical functional [M. Dion, H. Rydberg, E. Schroder, D. C. Langreth, and B. I. Lundqvist, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)], as efficiently implemented in the SIESTA code [G. Roman-Perez and J. M. Soler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 096102 (2009)]. We present results for the equilibrium structure and lattice parameters of several crystalline phases, finding a general improvement with respect to both the local density (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximations (GGA). Similar to other systems characterized by VDW bonding, such as rare gas and benzene dimers as well as solid argon, equilibrium distances and volumes are consistently overestimated by approximate to 7%, compared to -11% within LDA and 11% within GGA. The intramolecular geometries are retained, while the intermolecular distances and orientations are significantly improved relative to LDA and GGA. The quality is superior to that achieved with tailor-made empirical VDW corrections ad hoc [M. G. Del Popolo, C. Pinilla, and P. Ballone, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 144705 (2007)]. We also analyse the performance of an optimized version of this non-empirical functional, where the screening properties of the exchange have been tuned to reproduce high-level quantum chemical calculations [J. Klimes, D. Bowler, and A. Michaelides, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 22, 074203 (2010)]. The results for solids are even better with volumes and geometries reproduced within 2% of experimental data. We provide some insight into the issue of polymorphism of [bmim][Cl] crystals, and we present results for the geometry and energetics of [bmim][Tf] and [mmim][Cl] neutral and charged clusters, which validate the use of empirical force fields. This study employs density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine the mechanism by which acetaldehyde is formed on platinum in a typical direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). A pathway is found involving the formation of a strongly hydrogen-bonded complex between adsorbed ethanol and the surface hydroxyl (OH) species, followed by the facile alpha-dehydrogenation of ethanol, with spontaneous weakening of the hydrogen bond in favor of adsorbed acetaldehyde and water. This mechanism is found to be comparably viable on both the close-packed surface and the monatomic steps. Comparison of further reactions on these two sites strongly indicates that the steps act as net removers of acetaldehyde from the product stream, while the flat surface acts as a net producer.

X-ray harmonic radiation extending to 3.3 angstrom, 3.8 keV from Petawatt class laser-solid interactions is presented. The harmonic spectra display a relativistic limit scaling up to similar to 3000th order, above which an intensity dependent scaling roll-over is observed. Highly directional beamed emission for harmonic photon energy h nu > 1 keV is found to be into a cone angle

We present a study on the transport properties through conductivity (s), viscosity (?), and self-diffusion coefficient (D) measurements of two pure protic ionic liquids—pyrrolidinium hydrogen sulfate, [Pyrr][HSO4], and pyrrolidinium trifluoroacetate, [Pyrr][CF3COO]—and their mixtures with water over the whole composition range at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. Based on these experimental results, transport mobilities of ions have been then investigated in each case through the Stokes–Einstein equation. From this, the proton conduction in these PILs follows a combination of Grotthuss and vehicle-type mechanisms, which depends also on the water composition in solution. In each case, the displacement of the NMR peak attributed to the labile proton on the pyrrolidinium cation with the PILs concentration in aqueous solution indicates that this proton is located between the cation and the anion for a water weight fraction lower than 8%. In other words, for such compositions, it appears that this labile proton is not solvated by water molecules. However, for higher water content, the labile protons are in solution as H3O+. This water weight fraction appears to be the solvation limit of the H+ ions by water molecules in these two PILs solutions. However, [Pyrr][HSO4] and [Pyrr][CF3COO] PILs present opposed comportment in aqueous solution. In the case of [Pyrr][CF3COO], ?, s, D, and the attractive potential, Epot, between ions indicate clearly that the diffusion of each ion is similar. In other words, these ions are tightly bound together as ion pairs, reflecting in fact the importance of the hydrophobicity of the trifluoroacetate anion, whereas, in the case of the [Pyrr][HSO4], the strong H-bond between the HSO4– anion and water promotes a drastic change in the viscosity of the aqueous solution, as well as on the conductivity which is up to 187 mS·cm–1 for water weight fraction close to 60% at 298 K.

Experimental values for the carbon dioxide solubility in eight pure electrolyte solvents for lithium ion batteries – such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), ?-butyrolactone (?BL), ethyl acetate (EA) and methyl propionate (MP) – are reported as a function of temperature from (283 to 353) K and atmospheric pressure. Based on experimental solubility data, the Henry’s law constant of the carbon dioxide in these solvents was then deduced and compared with reported values from the literature, as well as with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOthermX software and those calculated by the Peng–Robinson equation of state implemented into Aspen plus. From this work, it appears that the CO2 solubility is higher in linear carbonates (such as DMC, EMC, DEC) than in cyclic ones (EC, PC, ?BL). Furthermore, the highest CO2 solubility was obtained in MP and EA solvents, which are comparable to the solubility values reported in classical ionicliquids. The precision and accuracy of the experimental values, considered as the per cent of the relative average absolute deviations of the Henry’s law constants from appropriate smoothing equations and from literature values, are close to (1% and 15%), respectively. From the variation of the Henry’s law constants with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of dissolution such as the standard Gibbs free energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy are calculated, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with CO2 in its hypothetical liquid state.

We report herein the screening, optimisation and scale up to 100 g of a bioreduction process that employs an in situ product removal (ISPR) technique to overcome the inherent equilibrium problem associated with the coupled-substrate approach to biocatalytic carbonyl reduction. This technique allowed the valuable chiral alcohol, (S)-2-bromo-2-cyclohexen-1-ol, to be isolated in 88% yield and 99.8% ee without the need for further purification, validating the general applicability of this experimental setup.

The chemoenzymatic synthesis of a Lewis basic phosphine-phosphine oxide organocatalyst from a cis-dihydrodiol metabolite of bromobenzene proceeds via a palladium-catalysed carbon-phosphorus bond coupling and a novel room temperature Arbuzov [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of an allylic diphenylphosphinite. Allylation of aromatic aldehydes were catalysed by the Lewis basic organocatalyst giving homoallylic alcohols in up to 57% ee. This compound also functioned as a ligand for rhodium-catalysed asymmetric hydrogenation of acetamidoacrylate giving reduction products with ee values of up to 84%.

Laser induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) has been used for the first time to study the parent ion production and fragmentation mechanisms of a biological molecule in an intense femtosecond (fs) laser field. The photoacoustic shock wave generated in the analyte substrate (thin Ta foil) has been simulated using the hydrodynamic HYADES code, and the full LIAD process has been experimentally characterised as a function of the desorption UV-laser pulse parameters. Observed neutral plumes of densities > 10(9) cm(-3) which are free from solvent or matrix contamination demonstrate the suitability and potential of the source for studying ultrafast dynamics in the gas phase using fs laser pulses. Results obtained with phenylalanine show that through manipulation of fundamental femtosecond laser parameters (such as pulse length, intensity and wavelength), energy deposition within the molecule can be controlled to allow enhancement of parent ion production or generation of characteristic fragmentation patterns. In particular by reducing the pulse length to a timescale equivalent to the fastest vibrational periods in the molecule, we demonstrate how fragmentation of the molecule can be minimised whilst maintaining a high ionisation efficiency.
