Three new C-glucosylxanthones, 2-(2'-O-trans-caffeoyl)-C-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (1), 2-(2'-O-trans-cinnamoyl)-C-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (2), and 2-(2'-O-trans-coumaroyl)-C-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (3), were isolated from the stems of Arrabidaea samydoides, in addition to three known C-glucosylxanthones, mangiferin (4), 2-(2'-O-benzoyl)-C-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (5), and muraxanthone (6). Their chemical structures were assigned on the basis of MS and 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Xanthones 1-6 showed moderate free radical scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as well as antioxidant activity evidenced by redox properties measured on ElCD-HPLC.

The slope of the distance-time relationship from maximal 200 and 400 in bouts (S(200-400)) has been increasingly employed for setting training intensities in swimming. However, physiological and mechanical responses at this speed are poorly understood. Thus, this study investigated blood lactate, heart rate (HR), stroke rate (SR), stroke length (SL) and RPE responses to an interval swimming set at S(200-400) in trained swimmers. In a 50-m pool, twelve athletes (16.5 +/- 1.2 yr, 176 +/- 7 cm, 68.4 +/- 5.4 kg, and 7.8 +/- 2.5% body fat) performed maximal 200 and 400 m crawl trials for S(200-400) determination (1.28 +/- 0.05 m/s). Thereafter, swimmers were instructed to perform 5 x 400 in at this speed with 1.5 min rest between repetitions. Three athletes Could not complete the set (exhaustion at 21.0 +/- 3.1 min). For the remaining swimmers (total set duration = 32.0 +/- 1.3 min) significant increases) (p < 0.05) in blood lactate (5.7 +/- 0.8-7.9 +/- 2.4 mmol/l), SR (29.6 +/- 3.2-32.1 +/- 4.1 cycles/min), HR (169 +/- 11-181 +/- 8 bpm) and RPE (13.3 +/- 1.6-16.3 +/- 2.6) were observed through the IS. Conversely, SL decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from the first to the fifth repetition (2.48 +/- 0.22-2.31 +/- 0.24 m/cycle). These results suggest that interval swimming at S(200-400) represents an intense physiological, mechanical and perceptual stimulus that can be sustained for a prolonged period by most athletes. Two new naphtho[2,3-C]pyran-1-one glycosides, paepalantine-9-O-β-D- glucopyranoside and paepalantine-9-O-β-D-allopyranosyl(1 → 6)glucopyranoside, were isolated from an ethanolic extract of capitula from Paepalanthus bromelioides and identified from their spectrometric data.

In a 3-3-1 model in which the lepton masses arise from a scalar sextet it is possible to break spontaneously a global symmetry which implies in a pseudoscalar Majoron-like Goldstone boson. This Majoron does not mix with any other scalar fields and for this reason it does not couple, at the tree level, to either the charged leptons or to the quarks. Moreover, its interaction with neutrinos is diagonal. We also argue that there is a set of parameters in which the model can be consistent with the invisible Z0 width and that heavy neutrinos can decay sufficiently rapid by Majoron emission, having a lifetime shorter than the age of the universe. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

A general procedure was developed for the simultaneous separation of flavonoids and naphthopyrones from the polar extracts of the capitula from Brazilian everlasting plants is described. The ethanolic extracts of several species from the Paepalanthus genus (Eriocaulaceae) were fractionated by droplet countercurrent chromatography followed by column chromatography on pvp and sephadex LH-20. The isolated compounds were identified by spectrometric analysis and comparison with literature data. This approach led to the isolation of 9-O-β-D-glucopyranosylpaepalantine (1), 9-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)allopyranosylpaepalantine (2), along with the flavonoids 6-methoxykaempferol (3), 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-6-methoxykaempferol (4), patuletin (5), 3-Oβ-D-rutinosylpatuletin (6), 7-O-β-D-glucopyranosylquercetagetin (7), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,3'-dimethoxyflavone (8) and 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,3'-dimethoxyflavonol (9).

Agaricus blazei Murrill, popularly known as the sun mushroom, is a native mushroom in SP, Brazil, that has been widely used in the treatment of cancer and many other pathologies in different parts of the world. A water-soluble protein-polysaccharide complex (1 → 6)β-D-glucan has been isolated from its fruiting body that showed immune-modulation activity. From organic extracts, linoleic acid has been isolated and determined to be the main substance with antimutagenic activity. Using both the micronucleus (MN) and comet (single cell microgel electrophoresis) assays, this study determined the genotoxic and antigenotoxic potential of A. blazei (AB) obtained from commercial sources or the following strains: a) strains AB 97/29 (young and sporulated phases); b) a mixture taken from AB 96/07, AB 96/09 and AB 97/ 11 strains; and c) commercial mushrooms from Londrina, PR and Piedade, SP, designated as AB PR and AB SP, respectively. The extracts from these mushrooms were isolated in chloroform:methanol (3:1) and used in vitro at three different concentrations. V79 cells (Chinese hamster lung cells) were exposed to the extracts under pre-, simultaneous and post-treatment conditions, combined with methyl methanesulfonate (MMS). Under the circumstances of this study, these organic extracts did not show any genotoxic or mutagenic effects, but did protect cells against the induction of micronuclei by MMS. We report on a first search for resonant pair production of neutral long-lived particles (NLLP) which each decay to a bb̄ pair, using 3.6fb-1 of data recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We search for pairs of displaced vertices in the tracking detector at radii in the range 1.6-20cm from the beam axis. No significant excess is observed above background, and upper limits are set on the production rate in a hidden-valley benchmark model for a range of Higgs boson masses and NLLP masses and lifetimes. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor type C (VEGF-C) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines through norepinephrine-induced activation of beta-adrenergic receptors. Human OSCC cell lines (SCC-9 and SCC-25) expressing beta-adrenergic receptors were stimulated with different concentrations of norepinephrine (0.1, 1, and 10 μM) and 1 μM of propranolol, and analyzed after 1, 6, and 24 h. VEGF-C gene expression and VEGF-C production in the cell supernatant were evaluated by real-time PCR and by ELISA, respectively. The results showed that beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation by different concentrations of norepinephrine or blocking by propranolol did not markedly alter VEGF-C expression by SCC-9 and SCC-25 cells. VEGF-C protein levels produced by oral malignant cell lines after stimulation with different norepinephrine concentrations or blocking with propranolol was statistically similar (p > 0.05) to those of the control group (nonstimulated OSCC cell lines). Our findings suggest that stimulation of beta-adrenergic receptors by means of norepinephrine does not seem to modulate the VEGF-C expression in OSCC cell lines. These findings reinforce the need for further studies in order to understand the responsiveness of oral cancer to beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation or blockage, especially with regard to VEGF-C production. © 2012 International Society of Oncology and BioMarkers (ISOBM).
