Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites filled with Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 ceramic were prepared by a powder processing technique. The structures and microstructures of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the ceramic filler had no effect on the melting point of the PTFE. The effect of the Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 ceramic content [0–0.6 volume fraction (vf)] on the thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), specific heat capacity, and thermal diffusivity were investigated. As the vf of the Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 ceramic increased, the thermal conductivity of the specimen increased, and the CTE decreased. The thermal conductivity and thermal expansion of the PTFE/Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 composites were improved to 1.7 W m21 8C21 and 34 ppm/8C, respectively for 0.6 vf of the ceramics. The experimental thermal conductivity and CTE were compared with different theoretical models.

Aim: To develop a new medium for enhanced production of biomass of an aquaculture probiotic Pseudomonas MCCB 103 and its antagonistic phenazine compound, pyocyanin. Methods and Results: Carbon and nitrogen sources and growth factors, such as amino acids and vitamins, were screened initially in a mineral medium for the biomass and antagonistic compound of Pseudomonas MCCB 103. The selected ingredients were further optimized using a full-factorial central composite design of the response surface methodology. The medium optimized as per the model for biomass contained mannitol (20 g l)1), glycerol (20 g l)1), sodium chloride (5 g l)1), urea (3Æ3 g l)1) and mineral salts solution (20 ml l)1), and the one optimized for the antagonistic compound contained mannitol (2 g l)1), glycerol (20 g l)1), sodium chloride (5Æ1 g l)1), urea (3Æ6 g l)1) and mineral salts solution (20 ml l)1). Subsequently, the model was validated experimentally with a biomass increase by 19% and fivefold increase of the antagonistic compound. Conclusion: Significant increase in the biomass and antagonistic compound production could be obtained in the new media. Significance and Impact of the Study: Media formulation and optimization are the primary steps involved in bioprocess technology, an attempt not made so far in the production of aquaculture probiotics.

The annealing effect on the spectral and nonlinear optical NLO characteristics of ZnO thin films deposited on quartz substrates by sol-gel process is investigated. As the annealing temperature increases from 300–1050 °C, there is a decrease in the band gap, which indicates the changes of the interface of ZnO. ZnO is reported to show two emission bands, an ultraviolet UV emission band and another in the green region. The intensity of the UV peak remains the same while the intensity of the visible peak increases with increase in annealing temperature. The role of oxygen in ZnO thin films during the annealing process is important to the change in optical properties. The mechanism of the luminescence suggests that UV luminescence of ZnO thin films is related to the transition from conduction band edge to valence band, and green luminescence is caused by the transition from deep donor level to valence band due to oxygen vacancies. The NLO response of these samples is studied using nanosecond laser pulses at off-resonance wavelengths. The nonlinear absorption coefficient increases from 2.9 ×10−6 to 1.0 ×10−4 m/W when the annealing temperature is increased from 300 to 1050 °C, mainly due to the enhancement of interfacial state and exciton oscillator strength. The third order optical susceptibility x(3) increases with increase in annealing temperature (T) within the range of our investigations. In the weak confinement regime, T2.4 dependence of x(3) is obtained for ZnO thin films. The role of annealing temperature on the optical limiting response is also studied.

In this article, we present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO–CdS nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. The optical band gap (Eg) of the material is tunable between 2.62 and 3.84 eV. The emission peaks of ZnO–CdS nanocomposites change from 385 to 520 nm almost in proportion to changes in Eg. It is possible to obtain a desired luminescence color from UV to green by simply adjusting the composition. The nonlinear optical response of these samples is studied by using nanosecond laser pulses from a tunable laser at the excitonic resonance and off-resonance wavelengths. The nonlinear response is wavelength dependent, and switching from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse SA (RSA) has been observed for samples as the excitation wavelength changes from the excitonic resonance to off-resonance wavelengths. Such a changeover in the sign of the nonlinearity of ZnO–CdS nanocomposites is related to the interplay of exciton bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. The ZnO–CdS nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behavior at off-resonant wavelengths. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increase with increasing CdS volume fraction at 532 nm. The observed nonlinear absorption is attributed to two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption. The enhancement of the third-order nonlinearity in the composites can be attributed to the concentration of exciton oscillator strength. This study is important in identifying the spectral range and composition over which the nonlinear material acts as a RSA based optical limiter. ZnO–CdS is a potential nanocomposite material for the tunable light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold.

In this thesis, we report our endeavours in the synthesis of a few polycyclic compounds. We were interested in the synthesis of a few bicyclic compounds designed to undergo interesting photochemical transformations including tripletmediated di-π-methane rearrangement and/or competing singlet-mediated electrocyclic reactions. Our target molecules have "inbuilt" structural features which will potentially alter the photochemistry of the substrate under consideration. The present investigation was undertaken to test our hypothesis on selective intramolecular quenching of singlet or triplet excited states of molecules. We adopted Dies-Alder reaction for the synthesis of several of the bicyclic compounds we were interested in. Some of the precursor dienes synthesised by us are capable of undergoing intramolecular cycloaddition reactions as well. So, it was important to delineate the conditions and structural features that will enable a particular molecule to undergo intermolecular and intramolecular Dies-Alder reaction when treated with a suitable dienophile.Though, the main focus of this thesis is on the synthesis of bicyclic and tricyclic systems capable of undergoing di-π-methane rearrangement, in the last chapter of this thesis, we describe our findings on the synthesis of a few dispirocompounds. These systems were encountered as unexpected products in the attempted synthesis of novel dibenzoylalkene-type systems. Consequently, a brief survey on the synthesis and transformations of dibenzoylalkenes is also included as an integral part of this thesis.

The present study was an attempt to analyze systematically the techniques of monetary control measures with its relevance and changing importance and to find out their effectiveness in the Indian context especially to achieve the thriving objectives of price stability and economic growth. There is definite and remarkable economic impact of monetary policy on Indian economy in the post-reform period. The importance of monetary policy has been increasing year after year. Its role is very relevant in attaining monetary objectives, especially in managing price stability and achieving economic growth. Along that, the use and importance of monetary weapons like Bank rate, CRR, SLR, Repo rate and Reverse Rate have increased over the years. Repo and Reverse Repo rates are the most frequently used monetary techniques in recent years. The rates are varied mainly for curtailing inflation and absorb the excess liquidity and hence to maintain price stability in the economy. Thus, this short-time objective of price stability is more successful on Indian economy rather than other long-term objectives of development.Monetary policy rules can be active or passive. The passive rule is to keep the money supply constant, which is reminiscent of Milton Friedman’s money growth rule. The second, called a price stabilization rule, is to change the money supply in response to changes in aggregate supply or demand to keep the price level constant. The idea of an active rule is to keep the price level and hence inflation in check. In India, this rule dominates our monetary policy. A stable growth is healthy growth.

The thesis deals with our studies on the synthesis and elucidation of structure of some metal complexes of dithio ligands, such as the dithiocarbamates, xanthates and 2-aminocyclopent-1-ene-1-dithiocarboxylate and its N-alkyl derivatives.2-Aminocyclopent-1-ene-1-dithiocarboxylate (ACDA) is an interesting ligand, because of its potential dual capability of bonding between the metal and the ligand. Since the earlier reports on the complexes of ACDA contain contradictory ideas on the nature of its bonding, it was thought worthwhile to undertake a detailed and systematic study of these type of complexes. As the ACDA complexes have very low solubilities in solvents like chloroform, we have used the isopropyl derivative of ACDA as the ligand. The increased solubility of these complexes have made it possible to investigate their NMR and solution electronic spectra. The complexes of this ligand have not yet been reported in the literature. We have synthesised some new mixed ligand complexes of dithiocarbamates by reacting bis(dithiocarbamato)-µ-dichloro dicopper complexes (obtained by the reaction of mixed benzoic dithiocarbamic anhydride and copper(II) chloride) with ACDA or its N-alkyl derivatives.Interactions of metal halides with the mixed anhydrides formed from benzoylchloride and xanthates have also been investigated. Novel complexes of the type, [Cu2(RXant)CI] (R=i-Bu, i-Pr, n-Bu or n-Pr)) have been isolated from the reaction of copper(II) chloride and the mixed anhydride, and these reactions appear to be like the clock reactions reported in the literature. It also deal with the characterisation of the complexes of the type [Hg(R2d t c )X] (X=Cl, Br or 1),[Cu3(R2dtc)6][Cu2Br6] and [Cu(R2dtc)Cl2](R2=Me2,Et2,Pip,Morph or Pyrr)respectively, synthesised by simple and novel routes, different from those reported earlier.

The present study describes the surface properties and catalytic activities of ferrospinels containing Co, Ni and Cu prepared by the low temperature route. Various physico-chemical methods have been adopted to characterise the systems. The reactions carried out are the Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of aromatics and the cyclohexanol decomposition. We have attempted the sulphate modification of the ferrites and have studied the surface and catalytic properties of the sulphated analogues. The work is presented in six chapters, the last chapter giving the summary and conclusions of the results presented earlier. Our samples prove as potential catalysts for the benzoylation of aromatics , for which truly heterogeneous catalysts are rare. Again , the materials show remarkable dehydration/dehydrogenation activities during cyclohexanol decomposition. There is plenty of scope for research in this field, especially in the development of environmentally benign catalysts for acylation reactions.

In this thesis an attempt has been made to compare the catalytic activity of some medium and large pore zeolites in a few alkylation and acylation reactions. The work reported in the present study is basically centered around the following zeolites namely, ZSM-5, mordenite, zeolite Y and beta. The major reactions carried out were benzoylation of o-xylene, propionylation of toluene and anisole and benzylation of 0xylene.The programme involves the synthesis, modifications and characterization of the zeolite catalysts by various methods. The influence of various parameters such as non-framework cations, Si/AI ratio of zeolites, temperature of the reaction, catalyst concentration, molar ratio of the reactants and recycling of the catalysts were also examined upon the conversion of reactants and the formation of the desired products in the alkylation / acylation reactions. The general conclusions drawn by us from the results obtained are summarized in the last chapter of the thesis. Zeolite beta offers interesting opportunities as a potential catalyst in alkylation reactions and the area of catalysis by medium and large pore zeolites is very fascinating and there is plenty of scope for further research in this field. Moreover, zeolite based catalysts are effective in meeting current industrial processing and more stringent environment pollution limits.
