The radio communication system is one of the most critical system of the overall satellite platform: it often represents the only way of communication, between a spacecraft and the Ground Segment or among a constellation of satellites. This thesis focuses on specific innovative architectures for on-board and on-ground radio systems. In particular, this work is an integral part of a space program started in 2004 at the University of Bologna, Forlì campus, which led to the completion of the microsatellite ALMASat-1, successfully launched on-board the VEGA maiden flight. The success of this program led to the development of a second microsatellite, named ALMASat-EO, a three-axis stabilized microsatellite able to capture images of the Earth surface. Therefore, the first objective of this study was focused on the investigation of an innovative, efficient and low cost architecture for on-board radio communication systems. The TT&C system and the high data rate transmitter for images downlink design and realization are thoroughly described in this work, together with the development of the embedded hardware and the adopted antenna systems. Moreover, considering the increasing interest in the development of constellations of microsatellite, in particular those flying in close formations, a careful analysis has been carried out for the development of innovative communication protocols for inter-satellite links. Furthermore, in order to investigate the system aspects of space communications, a study has been carried out at ESOC having as objective the design, implementation and test of two experimental devices for the enhancement of the ESA GS. Thus, a significant portion of this thesis is dedicated to the description of the results of a method for improving the phase stability of GS radio frequency equipments by means of real-time phase compensation and a new way to perform two antennas arraying tracking using already existing ESA tracking stations facilities.

Carbon fluxes and allocation pattern, and their relationship with the main environmental and physiological parameters, were studied in an apple orchard for one year (2010). I combined three widely used methods: eddy covariance, soil respiration and biometric measurements, and I applied a measurement protocol allowing a cross-check between C fluxes estimated using different methods. I attributed NPP components to standing biomass increment, detritus cycle and lateral export. The influence of environmental and physiological parameters on NEE, GPP and Reco was analyzed with a multiple regression model approach. I found that both NEP and GPP of the apple orchard were of similar magnitude to those of forests growing in similar climate conditions, while large differences occurred in the allocation pattern and in the fate of produced biomass. Apple production accounted for 49% of annual NPP, organic material (leaves, fine root litter, pruned wood and early fruit drop) contributing to detritus cycle was 46%, and only 5% went to standing biomass increment. The carbon use efficiency (CUE), with an annual average of 0.68 ± 0.10, was higher than the previously suggested constant values of 0.47-0.50. Light and leaf area index had the strongest influence on both NEE and GPP. On a diurnal basis, NEE and GPP reached their peak approximately at noon, while they appeared to be limited by high values of VPD and air temperature in the afternoon. The proposed models can be used to explain and simulate current relations between carbon fluxes and environmental parameters at daily and yearly time scale. On average, the annual NEP balanced the carbon annually exported with the harvested apples. These data support the hypothesis of a minimal or null impact of the apple orchard ecosystem on net C emission to the atmosphere.

The post genomic era, set the challenge to develop drugs that target an ever-growing list of proteins associated with diseases. However, an increase in the number of drugs approved every year is nowadays still not observed. To overcome this gap, innovative approaches should be applied in drug discovery for target validation, and at the same time organic synthetic chemistry has to find new fruitful strategies to obtain biologically active small molecules not only as therapeutic agents, but also as diagnostic tools to identify possible cellular targets. In this context, in view of the multifactorial mechanistic nature of cancer, new chimeric molecules, which can be either antitumor lead candidates, or valuable chemical tools to study molecular pathways in cancer cells, were developed using a multitarget-directed drug design strategy. According to this approach, the desired hybrid compounds were obtained by combining in a single chemical entity SAHA analogues, targeting histone deacetylases (HDACs), with substituted stilbene or terphenyl derivatives able to block cell cycle, to induce apoptosis and cell differentiation and with Sorafenib derivative, a multikinase inhibitor. The new chimeric derivatives were characterized with respect to their cytotoxic activity and their effects on cell cycle progression on leukemia Bcr-Abl-expressing K562 cell lines, as well as their HDACs inhibition. Preliminary results confirmed that one of the hybrid compounds has the desired chimeric profile. A distinct project was developed in the laboratory of Dr Spring, regarding the synthesis of a diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) library of macrocyclic peptidomimetics. From a biological point of view, this class of molecules is extremely interesting but underrepresented in drug discovery due to the poor synthetic accessibility. Therefore it represents a valid challenge for DOS to take on. A build/couple/pair (B/C/P) approach provided, in an efficient manner and in few steps, the structural diversity and complexity required for such compounds.

In this work, new tools in atmospheric pollutant sampling and analysis were applied in order to go deeper in source apportionment study. The project was developed mainly by the study of atmospheric emission sources in a suburban area influenced by a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI), a medium-sized coastal tourist town and a motorway. Two main research lines were followed. For what concerns the first line, the potentiality of the use of PM samplers coupled with a wind select sensor was assessed. Results showed that they may be a valid support in source apportionment studies. However, meteorological and territorial conditions could strongly affect the results. Moreover, new markers were investigated, particularly focusing on the processes of biomass burning. OC revealed a good biomass combustion process indicator, as well as all determined organic compounds. Among metals, lead and aluminium are well related to the biomass combustion. Surprisingly PM was not enriched of potassium during bonfire event. The second research line consists on the application of Positive Matrix factorization (PMF), a new statistical tool in data analysis. This new technique was applied to datasets which refer to different time resolution data. PMF application to atmospheric deposition fluxes identified six main sources affecting the area. The incinerator’s relative contribution seemed to be negligible. PMF analysis was then applied to PM2.5 collected with samplers coupled with a wind select sensor. The higher number of determined environmental indicators allowed to obtain more detailed results on the sources affecting the area. Vehicular traffic revealed the source of greatest concern for the study area. Also in this case, incinerator’s relative contribution seemed to be negligible. Finally, the application of PMF analysis to hourly aerosol data demonstrated that the higher the temporal resolution of the data was, the more the source profiles were close to the real one.

The dynamics of a passive back-to-back test rig have been characterised, leading to a multi-coordinate approach for the analysis of arbitrary test configurations. Universal joints have been introduced into a typical pre-loaded back-to-back system in order to produce an oscillating torsional moment in a test specimen. Two different arrangements have been investigated using a frequency-based sub-structuring approach: the receptance method. A numerical model has been developed in accordance with this theory, allowing interconnection of systems with two-coordinates and closed multi-loop schemes. The model calculates the receptance functions and modal and deflected shapes of a general system. Closed form expressions of the following individual elements have been developed: a servomotor, damped continuous shaft and a universal joint. Numerical results for specific cases have been compared with published data in literature and experimental measurements undertaken in the present work. Due to the complexity of the universal joint and its oscillating dynamic effects, a more detailed analysis of this component has been developed. Two models have been presented. The first represents the joint as two inertias connected by a massless cross-piece. The second, derived by the dynamic analysis of a spherical four-link mechanism, considers the contribution of the floating element and its gyroscopic effects. An investigation into non-linear behaviour has led to a time domain model that utilises the Runge-Kutta fourth order method for resolution of the dynamic equations. It has been demonstrated that the torsional receptances of a universal joint, derived using the simple model, result in representation of the joint as an equivalent variable inertia. In order to verify the model, a test rig has been built and experimental validation undertaken. The variable inertia of a universal joint has lead to a novel application of the component as a passive device for the balancing of inertia variations in slider-crank mechanisms.

The research of new advanced processes for syngas production is a part of a European project for the production of a new Gas to Liquid Process (NextGTL). The crucial points in the production of GTL process are the energy required for the air separation used in autothermal reforming or the heat required for steam reforming and the efficiency in carbon utilization. Therefore a new multistep oxy-reforming process scheme was developed at lower temperature with intermediate H2 membrane separation to improve the crucial parameter. The process is characterized by a S/C of 0.7 and O2/C of 0.21 having a smoothed temperature profile in which kinetic regime is easily obtained. Active catalysts for low temperature oxy-reforming process have been studied working at low pressure to discriminate among the catalyst and at high pressure to prove it on industrial condition. It allows the selection of the Rh as active phase among single and bimetallic VIII group metal. The study of the matrix composition and thermal treatment has been carried out on Rh-Mg/Al hydrotalcite selected as reference catalyst. The research to optimize the catalyst lead to enhanced performances through the identification of a limitation of the Rh reduction from the oxides matrix as key point to increase the Rh performances. The Rh loading have been studied to allow the catalyst scale up for pilot process in Chieti in a shape of Rh-HT on honeycomb ceramic material. The developed catalyst has enhanced methane conversion in a inch diameter monolith reactor if compared with the semi-industrial catalyst chosen in the project as the best reference.

In recent years, the use of Reverse Engineering systems has got a considerable interest for a wide number of applications. Therefore, many research activities are focused on accuracy and precision of the acquired data and post processing phase improvements. In this context, this PhD Thesis deals with the definition of two novel methods for data post processing and data fusion between physical and geometrical information. In particular a technique has been defined for error definition in 3D points’ coordinates acquired by an optical triangulation laser scanner, with the aim to identify adequate correction arrays to apply under different acquisition parameters and operative conditions. Systematic error in data acquired is thus compensated, in order to increase accuracy value. Moreover, the definition of a 3D thermogram is examined. Object geometrical information and its thermal properties, coming from a thermographic inspection, are combined in order to have a temperature value for each recognizable point. Data acquired by an optical triangulation laser scanner are also used to normalize temperature values and make thermal data independent from thermal-camera point of view.

The goal of many plant scientists’ research is to explain natural phenotypic variation in term of simple changes in DNA sequence. DNA-based molecular markers are extensively used for the construction of genome-wide molecular maps and to perform genetic analysis for simple and complex traits. The PhD thesis was divided into two main research lines according to the different approaches adopted. The first research line is to analyze the genetic diversity in an Italian apple germplasm collection for the identification of markers tightly linked to targeted genes by an association genetic method. This made it possible to identify synomym and homonym accessions and triploids. The fruit red skin color trait has been used to test the reliability of the genetic approaches in this species. The second line is related to the development of molecular markers closely linked to the Rvi13 and Rvi5 scab resistance genes, previously mapped on apple’s chromosome 10 and 17 respectively by using the traditional linkage mapping method. Both region have been fine-mapped with various type of markers that could be used for marker-assisted selection in future breeding programs and to isolate the two resistance genes.

GFRP pultruded profiles have shown to be structural profiles with great stiffness, strenght and very low specific weight, making it a great candidate for the rehabilitation of damaged strucutres. To further enhance the strucutral mechanism of these type of beams, the Slimflor composite structural system has lead as basis for this analysis; by replacing the steel beam with a GFRP pultruded profile. To further increase its composite action, a continuous shear connector has been set as part of the beam cross section as well as its needed reinforcement and fire protection.
