Given the widespread use of computers, the visual pattern recognition task has been automated in order to address the huge amount of available digital images. Many applications use image processing techniques as well as feature extraction and visual pattern recognition algorithms in order to identify people, to make the disease diagnosis process easier, to classify objects, etc. based on digital images. Among the features that can be extracted and analyzed from images is the shape of objects or regions. In some cases, shape is the unique feature that can be extracted with a relatively high accuracy from the image. In this work we present some of most important shape analysis methods and compare their performance when applied on three well-known shape image databases. Finally, we propose the development of a new shape descriptor based on the Hough Transform.

The use of computer-assisted technologies such as CAD - Computed Aided Design, CAM - Computed Aided Manufacturing, CAE - Computed Aided Engineering and CNC - Computed Numerical Control, are priorities in engineering and product designers. However, the dimensional measurement between the virtual and the real product design requires research, and dissemination procedures among its users. This work aims to use these technologies, through analysis and measurement of a CNC milling machine, designed and assembled in the university. Through the use of 3D scanning, and analyzing images of the machined samples, and its original virtual files, it was possible to compare the sizes of these samples in counterposition to the original virtual dimensions, we can state that the distortions between the real and virtual, are within acceptable limits for this type of equipment. As a secondary objective, this work seeks to disseminate and make more accessible the use of these technologies.

Since photographic document always bears the marks of a given universe imagined, subject to fi ctionality inherent in all assemblies plot as an act, the purpose of this article is to analyze the photographs archival materials disclosed in remembrance of the Brazilian military dictatorship in the magazine Veja, published in the decennial anniversaries of the 1964 coup, from the methodological assumptions of the rhetoric of image. If, in some cases, archival photographs reinforced the argument of the report, in others, they created a parallel narrative, framing the present through an interpreted past.

The study presents the application of an ergonomic method based on graphical mesh, created to analyze the attributes of public open space and that influence on their usability. It was based on DePAN method, created to classify the service level offered by niches present in open relationship spaces. However, this method adopted Geographical Information System (GIS ) to make maps that represent the space attributes. This study proposed an adaptation of this method, which replaces GIS by AutoCAD software to generate maps . The goal is to test the feasibility and efficiency of producing maps in AutoCAD software to represent the service niches level. An relashionship area on a college campus for data collecting in graphical meshes and maps confection. By applying the graphical mesh the attributes of that space were evaluated to help promote people permanence on site. Although the process through AutoCAD seems to be harder by being mechanical it guarantees a satisfactory result for analysis, resembling images generated by GIS. Therefore, it is concluded that it’s possible to represent graphically the riches service level.

The present work sought to discriminate, to map and to quantify the areas of soil use of the Stream Monte Belo watershed - Botucatu (SP), obtained by digitale images. The cartographic bases were the shart planialtimetric, edited by IBGE (1969) and the satellite images LANDSAT - 7, passages of 21/01/1999, 08/01/2003 and 23/10/2006. The Software Idrisi Andes 15.0 were used for conversion of the analogical information for digital and for determination of the vegetable coverings areas. The results allowed to verify that the SIG - IDRISI Andes 15.0 were efficient in the quantification of the areas with soil use and that the analysis of the data showed a cash progress of the areas of reforestations to the detriment of the areas of pastures, especially from 1999, 2003 to 2006, when the field areas were substituted by the forestry in his totality. In spite of that progress, the forest areas that you correspond to the Permanent Preservation Areas, They are considerably preserved. That result comes to the encounter of the tendency of expansion of the forestry, especially after the installation of cellulose industries in the area, what worsened the environmental problems originating from of the practice of the monoculture.

This study aimed to evaluate a period of 38 years, the use and soil occupation of the Paradise River watershed, inserted in the citys of São Manuel and Areiópolis-SP using aerial photographs for the year 1972 and TM image (Thematic Mapper) obtained by the Landsat-5 satellite, in 2010, using geoprocessing techniques. The watershed in question is very important for the city of São Manuel-SP, because its urban area is inserted in its divisors which part of it belongs to the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Perimeter Botucatu-SP, considered a recharge area of the aquifer Guarani. Today, the development of agriculture faces challenges, which is to produce more food without impacting the environment. Allied to this concern, research institutions have sought new technologies that allow the detection and quantification of human actions, enabling interventions in order to minimize possible damage to the environment. Among these technologies can be cited Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which a large volume of data and information stored in a region at different times can be evaluated in the same time, suggesting different approaches to the planning of land use. The results of the mapping of areas of use and soil occupation result nine classes in 1972, and the coffee culture showed the biggest occupation (37.94%) of the total area. The 2010 mapping formulated twelve classes of use, which demonstrated the predominance of sugar cane (37.94%), on the areas occupied by coffee and pasture before. The land use maps of 1972 and 2010 showed results that show intense human activity in the modification of natural landscape.

This study aimed to recognize the significant temporal changes in land use between 1984 and 2008 in Barra Bonita City/ SP and to analyze the conflicts of land use in permanent preservation areas (PPA) with reference to the Forest Code and Resolution N. 303/2002 of CONAMA. The GIS Idrisi Andes 5.0 – geographic information system was used and the images were processed by LANDSAT TM5. Maps of land use were obtained by Maxver supervised classification and showed that in 1984 the area occupied by sugar cane crop was about 10.50 ha (70%) in 1984 and 10.90 ha in 2008. In analysis of conflicts about land use in permanent preservation areas showed that in 24 years the sugar-cane crops increased 3.6% on PPA. The occupation was represented by adequate forest of 279.25 ha (31.5% of total) in 1984. In 2008, the sugar-cane crop was the biggest conflict in PPA occupying 357.9 ha and 11.4% corresponds to areas in preparation for use. This year, 59.5% of total PPA is at odds with environmental legislation.
