In the early 1900s, the Yakima Indian Agency welcomed non-Native ranching operations onto Yakama tribal lands, taxing rangelands, and resulting in widespread overgrazing. By the 1920s, agency concern for the welfare of ranchers facilitated a need to gain access to tribal grazing lands sustaining Yakama horses. As a result, agency officials launched systematic assaults on Yakama horse herds, citing horses as culprits of overgrazing and land degradation. However, Yakamas showed little interest in removing their horses, and instead actively opposed settler encroachment on tribal grazing lands. Through analyzing archival sources, conducting interviews, and reviewing scholarly sources, I argue that Yakamas and settlers used horses as a terrain of struggle, whereby they asserted competing claims to Indigenous lands and resources. Examining horses as a tool of resistance provides a useful lens for understanding forms of Native opposition to colonial hegemony, while interrogating problematic tropes settlers utilized to justify divesting Native communities.

The mechanical properties of a range of agglomerates and particulate coatings have been measured using a nanoindenter. The effect of formulation properties such as powder and binder properties on coating hardness is described. An attempt is also made to measure the fracture hardness with the nanoindenter. The use of indentation technology to measure fundamental agglomerate properties is critically analysed. Based on the indentation measurements and standard attrition test results, the coating hardness is found closely related to the attrition rate under standard conditions and can be used to screen different powder/binder formulations. An important functional and evolutionary constraint on the physical performance of vertebrates is believed to be the trade-off between speed and endurance capacity. However, despite the pervasiveness of physiological arguments, most studies have found no evidence of the trade-off when tested at the whole-animal level. We investigated the existence of this trade-off at the whole-muscle level, the presumed site of this physiological conflict, by examining inter-individual variation in both maximum power output and fatigue resistance for mouse extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle using the work-loop technique. We found negative correlations between several measures of in vitro maximum power output and force production with fatigue resistance for individual mouse EDL muscles, indicating functional trade-offs between these performance parameters. We suggest that this trade-off detected at the whole-muscle level has imposed an important constraint on the evolution of vertebrate physical performance.

We recently reported that a linkage disequilibrium (LD) block on chromosome 10q encompassing the gene encoding insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) harbors sequence variants that associate with Alzheimer disease (AD). Evidence also indicated effects upon a number of quantitative indices of AD severity, including age-at-onset (AAO). Since linkage of this immediate region to AAO has been shown in both AD and Parkinson disease (PD), we have explored the possibility that polymorphism within this LD block might also influence PD. Utilizing single nucleotide polymorphisms that delineate common haplotypes from this region, we observed significant evidence of association with AAO in an Australian PD case-control sample. Analyses were complemented with AAO data from two independent Swedish AD case samples, for which previously reported findings were replicated. Results were consistent between AD and PD, suggesting the presence of equivalent detrimental and protective alleles. These data highlight a genomic region in the proximity of IDE that may contribute to AD and PD in a similar manner.
