Electrolyte lesion and ibotenic acid lesion of the lateral preoptic area (LPO) of the rat were used to study the participation of this area in drinking behavior. Drinking was induced by cellular dehydration, hypovolemia, hypotension, and water deprivation. The animals with electrolytic lesion of the LPO showed a significant reduction in water intake in response to cellular dehydration, hypotension, and deprivation. The animals with ibotenic acid lesion of the LPO increased the water consumption produced by subcutaneous (SC) injection of hypertonic saline. The amount of water intake after SC injection of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) or isoprenaline was similar in control and ibotenic acid-lesioned animals. The rats with ibotenic acid lesion of the LPO drank significantly more water than control animals. Fibers of passage may also influence the drinking response, and the LPO may have osmosensitive receptors that facilitate water intake in connection with other areas of the central nervous system (CNS) that are implicated in drinking behavior.

Solid-state M-4-Cl-BP compounds, where M stands for bivalent Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and 4-Cl-BP is 4-chlorobenzylidenepyruvate, have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results led to informations about the composition, dehydration, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of the isolated complexes.

On the basis of DFT calculations, an understanding on the catalytic effect of water in the dehydration reaction between VO+ and NH3 to yield VNH+ and H2O has been obtained. The Gibbs free energy profiles point out that the global process involves two consecutive hydrogen shifts from the nitrogen to the oxygen atom. The catalytic role is achieved by a water assisted mechanism in which water acts as proton donor and acceptor, via transition structures corresponding to a six-membered rings. The corresponding stationary points lie below both the entrance VO+ + NH3, and VNH+ + H2O, channels. (c) 2006 Elsevier B... All rights reserved.

Male adult rats that received an intragastric load of 2 ml of 12% NaCl (n = 13) ingested both water (4.0 +/- 0.2 ml/2 h) and 0.9% NaCl (3.7 +/- 1.0 ml/2 h) when compared with rats that received intragastric load of 2 ml ofwater(water: 0.1 +/- 0.1; 0.9% NaCl: 0.5 +/- 0.3 ml/2 h, n = 12) in a two-bottle test. Intragastric sodium load increased plasma sodium concentration and osmolality by 5% and reduced plasma renin activity by half compared to rats that received intragastric load of water. Intravenous infusion of 1.5 ml/10 min of 10% NaCl (n = 16) also induced ingestion of water (6.2 +/- 0.8 ml/2 h) and 0.9% NaCl (2.9 +/- 0.8 ml/2 h) compared with intravenous infusion of 1.5 ml/10 min of 0.9% NaCl (water: 0.9 +/- 0.4; 0.9% NaCl: 0.5 +/- 0.2 ml/2 h, n = 14). Therefore, a sodium load that raises natremia and plasma osmolality, and therefore induces cell dehydration, results in both 0.9% NaCl and water ingestion when the rats have a two-bottle choice. Solid-state Ln-4-MeO-Bz compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y and 4-MeO-Bz is 4-methoxybenzoate, have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, phase transition, coordination mode, structure, thermal behaviour and thermal decomposition of the isolated compounds. The free mycolic acid fraction from Rhodococcus lentifragmentus was derivatized to methyl esters and further fractionated into saturated (F-0), monounsaturated (F-1) and diunsaturated (F-2) species using argentation-TLC. Methyl esters fractions F-0, F-1 and F-2, accounting for approximately 7.4%, 53.1% and 39.5%, respectively, were analyzed by electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) mass spectrometries. According to EI-MS, peaks observed for M(+)-18, that were prominent compared to those representing M(+)-32 and M(+)-(18 + 32), indicated that the carbon chain size ranged from C-36 to C-48. The pyrolytic cleavage of methyl mycolates (R(2)-CHOH-CH(R(1))-COOCH3), following the McLafferty rearrangement released fragment ions corresponding to, (a) the alpha-subunit, representing the fatty acid methyl ester (R(1)-CH2-COOCH3), methyl hexadecanoate, methyl tetradecanoate and methyl dodecanoate in decreasing order of relative intensity of peaks, and (b) the beta-subunit, representing the meroaldehyde moiety (R(2)-CHO). The saturated meroaldehyde species exhibited peaks representing meroaldehyde minus 18 mass units in which R(2) ranged from C19H39 to C31H63. The monunsaturated species exhibited peaks representing the meroaldehyde in which R(2) ranged from C19H37 to C31H61; peaks corresponding to meroaldehyde minus 18 mass units appeared only in the most abundant components, C29H57CHO, C27H53CHO, C25H49CHO and C31H61CHO, in a decreasing order of relative abundance. The diunsaturated species exhibited peaks essentially corresponding to meroaldehyde in which R(2) corresponded to C31H59 and C29H55; the latter displayed a relative intensity that was about one-half compared to that of the former. Fractions F-0, F-1 and F-2 showed a more intense pyrolytic fragmentation under CI-MS in contrast to results found under EI-MS. Therefore, peaks representing the alpha-subunit and the beta-subunit were more prominent than the ones representing the fragmentation of the hydrocarbon chain. Moreover, the beta-subunit of saturated species exhibited peaks corresponding to meroaldehyde plus hydrogen, and no dehydration of the beta-subunit occurred in this case. In turn, the beta-subunit of monounsaturated and diunsaturated species showed peaks representing both the meroaldehyde plus hydrogen and its dehydration product plus hydrogen. Thus, the presence of unsaturation in the meroaldehyde subunit of methyl mycolate facilitates appearance of dehydration fragment ions under chemical ionization procedure.

The water and sucrose effective diffusion coefficients behavior were studied in potato tubers immersed in aqueous sucrose solution, 50% (w/,A), at 27 degreesC. Water and sucrose concentration profiles were measured as function of the position for 3, 6 and 12 h of immersion. These were adjusted to a mathematical model for three components that take into account the bulk flow in a shrinking tissue and the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficients.The binary effective coefficients were an order of magnitude lower than those for pure solutions of sucrose. These coefficients show an unusual concentration dependence. Analysis of these coefficients as functions of the concentration and position demonstrates that, cellular tissue promotes high resistance to diffusion in the tuber and also the elastic contraction of material influences the species diffusion. Silica gel with a surface area of 500 m2g-1 and an average pore diameter of 60 angstrom was chemically modified with Ti(IV) oxide using the grafting method. The amount of metal oxide attached to the surface was 1.8.10(-3) mol g-1. The X-ray photoelectron spectra showed that the metal ion species on the surface are Ti(IV) in TiO2 and MTiO3 (M = Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+ and Pb2+), i.e. they have the binding energy of Ti2p3/2 = 458.7 eV. The dehydration of the solid at higher temperature increased the O(II)/Ti (O(II) = oxygen bound to titanium atom) ratio, presumably due to a reticulation of the hydrous Ti(IV) oxide on the silica surface at higher temperatures. Migration of Ti(IV) into the silica gel matrix was observed but the specific surface area was not significantly changed.

The effect of time of exposure, solution concentration and temperature on the osmotic concentration of banana (slices of 11 mm thickness) was studied in aqueous sucrose solutions. The selectivity of the cellular tissues was reduced by steam blanching the banana slices before osmotic treatment. Effective diffusion coefficients for the loss of water and the increase in sucrose content were determined according to Fick's Law applied to a two-dimensional body; calculated on the basis of the concentration of various components in the liquid phase impenetrating the fruit. These coefficients revealed values similar to binary diffusion coefficients for pure sucrose solutions.

The effect of the concentration of sucrose solutions on the cellular structure of potato tissue in equilibrium at 27 degreesC was Studied. Two different methods of investigation were used to determine the volume of the different phases composing the cellular tissue of the potato when in equilibrium with the solutions. one based on data of the concentration itself and the overall volume of 2 mm slices after 48 h at equilibrium, and the other on microscopic images of cells in thin slices of fresh tissue stained with neutral red after an hour in equilibrium to show protoplasts, vacuoles and plasmolysis spaces. The results of these methods were compared with those obtained by a predictive thermodynamic approach considering the semipermeability of cell membranes. Phase volume data obtained from microscopic analysis were more similar to what was predicted by the theoretical model than those obtained by means of composition measurement. where the long equilibrium time apparently led to the loss of semi permeability of the cell membranes, since total volumes calculated without consideration of the cell membranes were similar to those measured. This suggests that the length of time of osmotic dehydration brings about a change in cell structure and the consequent involvement of a different mechanism in mass transfer. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. SnO2-based materials are used as sensors, catalysts and in electro-optical devices. This work aims to synthesize and characterize the SnO2/Sb2O3-based inorganic pigments, obtained by the polymeric precursor method, also known as Pechini method (based on the metallic citrate polymerization by means of ethylene glycol). The precursors were characterized by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). After characterization, the precursors were heat-treated at different temperatures and characterized by X-ray diffraction. According to the TG/DTA curves basically two-step mass loss process was observed: the first one is related to the dehydration of the system; and the second one is representative to the combustion of the organic matter. Increase of the heat treatment temperature from 500 to 600 degrees C and 700 degrees C resulted higher crystallinity of the formed product.

Half-fresh apples were immersed in sucrose solution (50% w/w, 27 degrees C) during different times of exposition (2, 4, and 8 h). Then each fruit was sliced from the transversal exposed surface. Density, water, and sugar content were determined for each slice. A mathematical model was fitted to experimental data of water and sucrose content considering the global flux and the tissue shrinkage. By numerical analysis, the binary effective diffusion coefficients as a function of concentration were calculated, using material coordinates and integrating simultaneously two differential equations (for water and sucrose). The coefficients obtained are one or even two orders of magnitude lower than the ones for pure solutions and present an unusual concentration dependence. This comparison shows the influence of the tissue resistance to the diffusion.
