The role of oxygen in the interaction of emeraldine base polyaniline with Cu(II) or Fe(III) ions in NMP solution

The influence of molecular oxygen in the interactions of emeraldine base form of polyaniline (EB-PANI) with Fe(III) or Cu(II) ions in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) solutions has been investigated by UV-vis-NIR, resonance Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Through the set of spectroscopic results it was possible to rationalize the role Of O(2) and to construct a scheme of preferential routes occurring in the interaction of EB-PANI with Fe(III) or Cu(II). Solutions of 4.0 mmol L(-1) EB-PANI with 0.8, 2.0 and 20 mmol L(-1) Fe(III) or Cu(II) ions in NMP were investigated and the main observed reactions were EB-PANI oxidation to pernigraniline (PB-PANI) and EB-PANI doping process by pseudo-protonation, or by a two-step redox process. In the presence Of O(2), PB-PANI is observed in all Fe(III)/EB solutions and EB-PANI doping only occurs in solutions with high Fe(III) concentrations through pseudo-protonation. On the other hand, emeraldine salt (ES-PANI) is formed in all Fe(III)/EB solutions under N(2) atmosphere and, in this case, doping occurs both by the pseudo-protonation and two-step redox mechanisms. In all Cu(II)/EB solutions PB-PANI is formed both in the presence and absence of O(2), and only for solutions with high Cu(II) concentrations doping process occurs in a very low degree. The most important result from EPR spectra was providing evidence for redox steps. The determined Cu(II) signal areas under oxygen are higher than under N(2) and, further. the initial metal proportions (1:2:20) are maintained in these spectra, indicating that Cu(I) formed are re-oxidized by O(2) and. so, Cu(II) ions are being recycled. Consistently, for the solutions prepared under nitrogen, the corresponding areas and proportions in the spectra are much lower, confirming that a partial reduction of Cu(II) ions actually occurs. Functional Expression of Chemoreceptors with the Help of a Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor

Odorant receptors and other chemoreceptors are usually poorly expressed in the plasma membrane of heterologous cells. A key point of regulation in G protein-mediated signaling is the interconversion between the active GTP-bound and inactive GDP-bound states of the G alpha subunit, which regulatory proteins, such as guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs), can control. GEFs stimulate formation of the GTP-bound state of G alpha and therefore are considered to work as positive regulators of G protein-coupled receptor signaling. Ric-8B, a GEF that is specifically expressed in olfactory sensory neurons, promotes functional expression of odorant receptors in HEK293T cells because it amplifies the initially low receptor signaling through G alpha olf. This same strategy could be used to functionally express other types of chemoreceptors.

Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of the Essential Oil from Croton heterocalyx Baill. (Euphorbiaceae s.s.) Leaves

The chemical composition and the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from Croton heterocalyx leaves were evaluated. The oil which was analyzed by GC and GUMS was found to contain germacrene D (12.5%), bicyclogermacrene (11.2%), delta-elemene (9.2%) beta-elemene (8.2%), spathulenol (6.9%), linalool (5.4%) and 1,8-cineole (3.7%) its major components. Croton. heterocalyx oil displayed a high inhibitory activity against the fungi Aspergillus niger (16404) and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231.) as well its the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), hut a very weak activity was observed for the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027).

Electro-oxidation of ethanol on PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst

PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was prepared in a single step by an alcohol-reduction process using ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent and CeO(2) (15 wt%) and Vulcan XC72 (85 wt%) as supports. The performance for ethanol oxidation was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of the PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was higher than that of the PtSn/C electrocatalyst. FTIR studies for ethanol oxidation on PtSn/C electrocatalyst showed that acetaldehyde and acetic acid were the principal products formed, while on PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst the principal products formed were CO(2) and acetic acid.

Modeling and simulation of the anode in direct ethanol fuels cells

Mathematical modeling has been extensively applied to the study and development of fuel cells. In this work, the objective is to characterize a mechanistic model for the anode of a direct ethanol fuel cell and perform appropriate simulations. The software Comsol Multiphysics (R) (and the Chemical Engineering Module) was used in this work. The software Comsol Multiphysics (R) is an interactive environment for modeling scientific and engineering applications using partial differential equations (PDEs). Based on the finite element method, it provides speed and accuracy for several applications. The mechanistic model developed here can supply details of the physical system, such as the concentration profiles of the components within the anode and the coverage of the adsorbed species on the electrode surface. Also, the anode overpotential-current relationship can be obtained. To validate the anode model presented in this paper, experimental data obtained with a single fuel cell operating with an ethanol solution at the anode were used. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Conformational differences between the wild type and V30M mutant transthyretin modulate its binding to genistein: Implications to tetramer stability and ligand-binding

Transthyretin (TTR) is a tetrameric beta-sheet-rich transporter protein directly involved in human amyloid diseases. It was recently found that the isoflavone genistein (GEN) potently inhibits TTR amyloid fibril formation (Green et al., 2005) and is therefore a promising candidate for TTR amyloidosis treatment. Here we used structural and biophysical approaches to characterize genistein binding to the wild type (TTRwt) and to its most frequent amyloidogenic variant, the V30M mutant. In a dose-dependent manner, genistein elicited considerable increases in both mutant and TTRwt stability as demonstrated by high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and acid-mediated dissociation/denaturation assays. TTR:GEN crystal complexes and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments showed that the binding mechanisms of genistein to the TTRwt and to V30M are different and are dependent on apoTTR structure conformations. Furthermore, we could also identify potential allosteric movements caused by genistein binding to the wild type TTR that explains, at least in part, the frequently observed negatively cooperative process between the two sites of TTRwt when binding ligands. These findings show that TTR mutants may present different ligand recognition and therefore are of value in ligand design for inhibiting TTR amyloidosis. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Måltidssvårigheter hos patienter med demens : en litteraturstudie

Syfte med denna studie var att identifiera måltidssvårigheter hos patienter med sjukdomen demens, belysa relevanta omvårdnadsåtgärder och att studera betydelsen av kunskap och utbildning hos vårdpersonal. Metod: Studien genomfördes som en litteraturstudie och baserades på 13 vetenskapliga artiklar. Artiklarna hämtades på Högskolan Dalarna biblioteket med hjälp av sökmotor ELIN och i databasen CINAHL. Sökorden som användes var dement*, nursing, eating, problem*, mealtime, apraxia. Artiklarnas kvalitet och evidensgrad baserades på modifierad version av granskningsmallar enligt Willman, Stoltz, Bahtsevani (2006) och Forsberg & Wengström (2008). Resultatet visade att de vanligaste faktorerna som påverkade måltider hos patienter med demens var sväljsvårigheter, förlusten av kognitiv förmåga som ledde till att patienter hade emotionella och psykomotoriska svårigheter samt ett rad somatiska besvär. Hjälpen av personalen eller närstående hade den största betydelse för att patienter fick tillräckligt med näring och vätskor. Verbal uppmuntran att äta, beröm, ögonkontakt, leende, skapandet av trivsam och lugn miljö hade en positiv effekt. Det finns behov av speciella utbildningsprogram inom malnutritionsfrågor, näringsstatus och hantering av måltidsvårigheter hos patienter med demens. Slutsatser: Omvårdnadspersonalen behöver öka kompetensen att förstå problemen med måltidssvårigheter och att anpassa omvårdnadsåtgärderna efter patientens individuella behov. Även den fysiska och psykosociala måltidsmiljön har betydelse för matintaget.

L’insegnamento online delle lingue all’Università del Dalarna (Svezia) : Esperienze di collaborazione internazionale e prospettive future

This paper describes the on-line teaching strategies for languages adopted at the University of Dalarna (Sweden) and the experience of a collaboration carried out with the Language Centre of the University of Parma that led to the administration of an international course in Italian for specific purposes. According to the results of its first administration, the promotion of advanced forms of "virtual mobility" together with the prospective of a joint degree in Italian language and culture will be outlined.

Barnmorskans uppfattning om indikationer och effekter av förlossning med elektiva kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation utifrån arbetslivserfarenhet : En intervjustudie

Bakgrund: Statistik visar på ökat antal elektiva kejsarsnitt internationellt och nationellt. Ett kejsarsnitt kan rädda liv på mor och barn om komplikationer uppstår, elektivt kejsarsnitt är även liksom andra stora operationer förenat med risker för komplikationer. Antalet elektiva kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation har ökat i Sverige och cirka 17 % av alla förlossningar sker via kejsarsnitt. Att vårda och stödja kvinnor före, under och efter en förlossning med kejsarsnitt hör till barnmorskans arbete. Syftet med studien var att beskriva barnmorskors uppfattning om indikationer och effekter av förlossning med elektiva kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation belyst utifrån arbetslivserfarenheter. Metod: kvalitativ metod: semistrukturella intervjuer med nio barnmorskor. Materialet analyserades via fenomenografisk analys i sju steg. Resultat: Fyra beskrivningskategorier framkom, Elektivt kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation är ett etiskt dilemma, Elektivt kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation är en stor operation, Elektivt kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation påverkar organisation och barnmorskans arbetsmiljö och Elektivt kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation påverkar kvinnans förlossningsupplevelse. Vidare framkom nio kategorier som beskriver barnmorskors uppfattningar. Slutsats Barnmorskor uppfattar elektiva kejsarsnitt som något komplext, att de med sina yrkeskunskaper värnar det naturliga vid kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation och att de har brist på mandat att stödja och stärka kvinnors informerade val om elektivt kejsarsnitt på humanitär indikation. Klinisk tillämpbarhet: Resultatet kan användas vid undervisning kring barnmorskans stödjande och vårdande arbete i samband med förlossning via kejsarsnitt. Vidare kan resultatet vara underlag till diskussioner inom mödrahälsovård och förlossning i syfte att ge barnmorskor stärkt mandat till sina stödjande och informativa uppgifter.

Tourism and Arctic Observation Systems : exploring the relationships

The Arctic is affected by global environmental change and also by diverse interests from many economic sectors and industries. Over the last decade, various actors have attempted to explore the options for setting up integrated and comprehensive trans-boundary systems for monitoring and observing these impacts. These Arctic Observation Systems (AOS) contribute to the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of environmental change and responsible social and economic development in the Arctic. The aim of this article is to identify the two-way relationship between AOS and tourism. On the one hand, tourism activities account for diverse changes across a broad spectrum of impact fields. On the other hand, due to its multiple and diverse agents and far-reaching activities, tourism is also well-positioned to collect observational data and participate as an actor in monitoring activities. To accomplish our goals, we provide an inventory of tourism-embedded issues and concerns of interest to AOS from a range of destinations in the circumpolar Arctic region, including Alaska, Arctic Canada, Iceland, Svalbard, the mainland European Arctic and Russia. The article also draws comparisons with the situation in Antarctica. On the basis of a collective analysis provided by members of the International Polar Tourism Research Network from across the polar regions, we conclude that the potential role for tourism in the development and implementation of AOS is significant and has been overlooked.

Eutanásia e dignidade da pessoa humana: desafios jurídicos

Esta monografia busca apresentar uma visão panorâmica da eutanásia, tema este que se reveste de grande polemicidade, ensejando implicações de ordem médico jurídica. Neste pesquisa, buscou-se resgatar conceitos técnicos e também uma abordagem histórica do tema. Em que pese este trabalho haver se atido apenas a uma classificação da eutanásia, são várias as classificações encontradas nos compêndios científicos. Procurou-se também abordar a posição do Direito Brasileiro e a do Direito Estrangeiro, apresentando-se o posicionamento jurídico de algumas nações, no que tange ao assunto, encontrando-se posições divergenes e variadas. Notou-se que, face ao grande avanço biotecnológico, a questão vem sendo discutida mais amplamente nas áreas médicas e jurídicas, porém, a eutanásia ainda é considerada um grande tabu na prática médica. A atualidade e a complexidade do tema "morrer com dignidade" justificam este estudo, por suscitar questões ético-jurídicas intrincadas, diante do avanço da tecnologia médica, nas últimas décadas do século XX e início deste, provocando uma verdadeira mutação cultural e impregnando de valores morais e sociais as questões sobre o início e o fim da vida. Vislumbram-se situações verdadeiramente paradoxais no que concerne a este tema, a ponto de muitos pensadores considerarem a eutanásia o grande desafio do século XXI.
