The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on polypyrrole (PPy) film modified with platinum microparticles has been studied by means of electrochemical and in situ Fourier transform infrared techniques. The Pt microparticles, which were incorporated in the PPy film by the technique of cyclic voltammetry, were uniformly dispersed. The modified electrode exhibits significant electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methanol. The catalytic activities were found to be dependent on Pt loading and the thickness of the PPy film. The linearly adsorbed CO species is the only intermediate of electrochemical oxidation of methanol and can be readily oxidized at the modified electrodes. The enhanced electrocatalytic activities may be due to the uniform dispersion of Pt microparticles in the PPy film and the synergistic effects of the highly dispersed Pt microparticles and the PPy film. Finally, a reaction mechanism is suggested.

A novel and quantitative study on structure-property relationships has been carried out in urea crystal, based on the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the modified Levine bond charge model, mainly from the chemical bond viewpoint. For the first time, it was treated like this, and the bond parameters and linear and nonlinear characteristics of constituent chemical bonds were presented quantitatively. The theoretical result agrees satisfactorily with the experimental datum and can reasonably explain the nonlinear origin of urea crystal, that is, the C-N bond in the conjugated system of bonds O double left arrow C<--N-H. At the same time, the novel method should be a useful tool toward the future development of the search for new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the organic crystal field.

The collapse process of porphyrin monolayers at the air-water interface was studied by Brewster angle microscopy and by compression-recompression isotherms. It was found that the start of collapse observed by BAM is accordant with that measured by compression-recompression isotherms. The behavior of mixed monolayers was studied also and the results showed that porphyrin islands were excluded from mixed monolayers at 35mN/m.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on polythionine(PTn) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and in-situ FTIR spectroscopy. The Pt microparticles produced by cyclic voltammetry were highly dispersed in and on the PTn film. The modified electrodes exhibit significant electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methano and the catalytic activity was found in dependence on the Pt loading. The linearly adsorbed CO species is the only intermediate in the oxidation of methanol and the abnormal IR spectra for adsorbed CO were observed. On such modified electrodes, adsorbed CO species derived from methanol can be readily oxidized. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity may be ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the PTn film and the synergestic effect between Pt microparticles and the polymer. From the above results, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed.

Covalent radii of the bonding elements have strong effects on the linear electro-optic coefficients of zinc blende crystals; these effects can be quantitatively determined by investigating the relation between the difference in the atomic sizes rho and the magnitude of the linear electro-optic tensor coefficient r(41). It is interesting to note that for the same cation Zn2+, Ga3+, or In3+ the magnitude of r(41) increases with increased covalent radius of the bonded anion r(beta). Especially with the increasing tendency of the parameter rho, the magnitude of r(41) of crystals that have a same cation will increase suddenly when the value of r(beta) becomes larger. The miscibility of blends of cellulose diacetate (CDA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) was extensively studied by means of differential thermal analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, tensile test, measuring viscosity of diluted and concentrated solutions of blends in acetone-ethanol mixture and morphological observations. A single glass transition temperature is observed, which is intermediate between the glass transition temperatures associated with each component and depends on composition. A synergism in mechanical properties of blends was found. The absolute viscosity and the intrinsic viscosity of solutions of blends are much higher than the weight average values of solutions of CDA and PVP. Optically clear and thermodynamically stable films were formed in the composition range of CDA/PVP = 100/0 to 50/50w/w. Fourier transform infrared was used to investigate the nature of CDA-PVP interaction. Hydrogen bonds were formed between hydroxyl groups of CDA and carbonyl groups of PVP. Heats of solutions of CDA/PVP blends and their mechanical mixtures were measured by using a calorimeter. Mixing enthalpy obtained with Hess's law approach was used to quantify interaction parameters of this blending system. It was found that mixing enthalpies and interaction parameters were negative and composition dependent. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

In this paper the origin of nonlinearities of the K[B5O6(OH)(4)].2H(2)O(KB5) crystal has been investigated from a comprehensive view-point by using the bond-valence theory of complex crystals. The results of the calculation (d(31) = -1.18 X 10(-10) esu, d(32) = 0.20 X 10(-10) and d(33) = -1.03 X 10(-9) esu) are in good agreement with experimental data. For the first time we pointed out that its nonlinearities come from the H(2)-O(2) bonds and the [B5O6(OH)(4)](-) group, and estimated its larger nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficient d(33).

The electrochemical preparation of highly dispersed Au microparticles on the surfaces of glassy carbon (GC) electrodes and their electrocatalytic activities for the oxidation of formaldehyde were studied. It was found that the reduction of Au3+ to Au is controlled by diffusion and the formation mechanism of Au microparticles on the GC surfaces corresponds to an instantaneous nucleation and diffusion-controlled three dimensional growth process. The particle size is about 80-90 nm in diameter after the electrochemical ageing treatment. These highly dispersed Au microparticles have high surface areas and exhibit better electrocatalytic activity than that of bulk-form Au toward the electrochemical oxidation of formaldehyde in alkaline media.

A theoretical method has been set up to calculate the electrooptic tensor coefficients r(ijk), based on the Phillips-Van Vechten (PV) dielectric theory and the Levine bond charge model, Starting from the crystal structure data and only introducing the experimentally determined optical permittivity and dielectric constant, the electro-optic tensor coefficients r(ijk) can be quantitatively predicted, The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with experiment in the case of zinc blende and wurtzite crystals, For zinc blende crystals, the effects of covalent radii on the linear electro-optic coefficients are discussed. The origin of nonlinearity in KTiOPO4 was investigated quantitatively from the chemical bond viewpoint. All constituent chemical bonds in this crystal were considered and their contributions to the total linearity and nonlinearity were quantitatively determined. Calculated results agree satisfactorily with experimental data in both signs and numerical values. These results show us that TiO6 groups and P(1)O-4 groups have relatively larger linear contributions and the nonlinearity derives from KOx (x=8,9) groups and P(2)O-4 groups. A systematic and quantitative research on the structure-property correlation has been carried out in KH2PO4 (KDP), NH4H2PO4 (ADP) and HIO3, based on the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the Levine bond charge model. We, for the first time, successfully solve the problems in the calculation of the nonlinearities of the complex inorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, which have O-H bonds in their crystal structures. We do this by introducing the bond-valence equation we have set up, calculating the nonlinear optical tensor coefficients d(ijk) of these three compounds, quantitatively determining the contributions of each type of bond to the total second-order NLO tensor coefficient (d(ijk)) of the crystal, and presenting the bond parameters and the linear properties of each kind of bond. For the first time, the NLO coefficient d(36) for ADP was calculated. All calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data. We found that O-H bonds also play an important role in these crystals, except for in the important anionic groups (PO4 groups and IO3 groups). All the results thus calculated show that our method is useful in evaluating the NLO coefficients of the inorganic NLO crystals containing O-H bonds in their structures, and should be a useful tool toward the future research into new nonlinear optical materials of this kind.

For the first time, we present the calculation of the nonlinear optical coefficient of the NdAl3(BO3)(4) (NAB) crystal from a systematic and quantitative standpoint. Based on the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the Levine bond charge model, the method of calculation of the second-order nonlinear optical tensor coefficients of complex crystals has been given systematically. The chemical bond parameters and linear and nonlinear susceptibilities of the NAB crystal have been calculated in detail, and the calculated value of d(11)(NAB) is -5.81 x 10(-9) esu, which agrees with the measured value of 4.06 x 10(-9) esu.

Four types of sensitized luminescence of Dy3+ are reported: (1) by a host having a broad-band spectrum as in Na3Y0.99Dy0.01(VO4)(2); (2) by a sensitizer having a broad-band spectrum as in Ca2B2O5:Dy3+, Bi3+; (3) by a sensitizer having a narrow-band spectrum as in Mg2Gd7.9Dy0.1(SiO4)(6)O-2; (4) by a sensitizer having a broad-band spectrum and energy migration as in Gd compounds such as Ca1.96Pb0.04Gd7.9Dy0.1(SiO4)(6)O-2. The luminescent intensity of Dy3+ can be enhanced in these ways.
