The Hyades stream has long been thought to be a dispersed vestige of the Hyades cluster. However, recent analyses of the parallax distribution, of the mass function, and of the action-space distribution of stream stars have shown it to be rather composed of orbits trapped at a resonance of a density disturbance. This resonant scenario should leave a clearly different signature in the element abundances of stream stars than the dispersed cluster scenario, since the Hyades cluster is chemically homogeneous. Here, we study the metallicity as well as the element abundances of Li, Na, Mg, Fe, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd and Eu for a random sample of stars belonging to the Hyades stream, and compare them with those of stars from the Hyades cluster. From this analysis: (i) we independently confirm that the Hyades stream cannot be solely composed of stars originating in the Hyades cluster; (ii) we show that some stars (namely 2/21) from the Hyades stream nevertheless have abundances compatible with an origin in the cluster; (iii) we emphasize that the use of Li as a chemical tag of the cluster origin of main-sequence stars is very efficient in the range 5500 K <= T(eff) <= 6200 K, since the Li sequence in the Hyades cluster is very tight, while at the same time spanning a large abundance range; (iv) we show that, while this evaporated population has a metallicity excess of similar to 0.2 dex with respect to the local thin-disc population, identical to that of the Hyades cluster, the remainder of the Hyades stream population has still a metallicity excess of similar to 0.06-0.15 dex, consistent with an origin in the inner Galaxy and (v) we show that the Hyades stream can be interpreted as an inner 4:1 resonance of the spiral pattern: this then also reproduces an orbital family compatible with the Sirius stream, and places the origin of the Hyades stream up to 1 kpc inwards from the solar radius, which might explain the observed metallicity excess of the stream population.

A new species of the genus Acratosaura is described on the basis of two specimens obtained at the ""campos rupestres"" (rocky meadows) near Mucuge municipality, state of Bahia, Brazil. Acratosaura spinosa sp. nov., has ear openings and eyelids, pentadactyl limbs lacking a claw on first toe, a single frontonasal, prefrontals, frontoparietals, parietals, interparietals, occipitals, no collar fold, three pairs of genials, three supraoculars and three superciliaries and is further characterized by presenting 28-31 rows of strongly keeled, lanceolate and imbricate dorsal scales, sides of the neck with keeled scales, striate temporal scales, four longitudinal and 17-18 transverse rows of smooth ventral scales, 28-30 scales around the body, 14 and 19-20 infradigital lamellae under finger IV and toe IV, respectively, 13 total preanal and femoral pores in male, absent in female. The new species differs strikingly in color pattern from its only congener A. mentalis. The two species occur sympatricaly in the high altitude open habitats near the type locality.

We introduce a flexible technique for interactive exploration of vector field data through classification derived from user-specified feature templates. Our method is founded on the observation that, while similar features within the vector field may be spatially disparate, they share similar neighborhood characteristics. Users generate feature-based visualizations by interactively highlighting well-accepted and domain specific representative feature points. Feature exploration begins with the computation of attributes that describe the neighborhood of each sample within the input vector field. Compilation of these attributes forms a representation of the vector field samples in the attribute space. We project the attribute points onto the canonical 2D plane to enable interactive exploration of the vector field using a painting interface. The projection encodes the similarities between vector field points within the distances computed between their associated attribute points. The proposed method is performed at interactive rates for enhanced user experience and is completely flexible as showcased by the simultaneous identification of diverse feature types.

Cobalt-related impurity centers in diamond have been studied using first principles calculations. We computed the symmetry, formation and transition energies, and hyperfine parameters of cobalt impurities in isolated configurations and in complexes involving vacancies and nitrogen atoms. We found that the Co impurity in a divacant site is energetically favorable and segregates nitrogen atoms in its neighborhood. Our results are discussed in the context of the recently observed Co-related electrically active centers in synthetic diamond.

Recently, the deterministic tourist walk has emerged as a novel approach for texture analysis. This method employs a traveler visiting image pixels using a deterministic walk rule. Resulting trajectories provide clues about pixel interaction in the image that can be used for image classification and identification tasks. This paper proposes a new walk rule for the tourist which is based on contrast direction of a neighborhood. The yielded results using this approach are comparable with those from traditional texture analysis methods in the classification of a set of Brodatz textures and their rotated versions, thus confirming the potential of the method as a feasible texture analysis methodology. Structured meaning-signal mappings, i.e., mappings that preserve neighborhood relationships by associating similar signals with similar meanings, are advantageous in an environment where signals are corrupted by noise and sub-optimal meaning inferences are rewarded as well. The evolution of these mappings, however, cannot be explained within a traditional language evolutionary game scenario in which individuals meet randomly because the evolutionary dynamics is trapped in local maxima that do not reflect the structure of the meaning and signal spaces. Here we use a simple game theoretical model to show analytically that when individuals adopting the same communication code meet more frequently than individuals using different codes-a result of the spatial organization of the population-then advantageous linguistic innovations can spread and take over the population. In addition, we report results of simulations in which an individual can communicate only with its K nearest neighbors and show that the probability that the lineage of a mutant that uses a more efficient communication code becomes fixed decreases exponentially with increasing K. These findings support the mother tongue hypothesis that human language evolved as a communication system used among kin, especially between mothers and offspring.

The Patino Formation sandstones, which crop out in Aregua neighborhood in Eastern Paraguay and show columnar joints near the contact zone with a nephelinite dyke, have as their main characteristics the high proportion of syntaxial quartz overgrowth and a porosity originated from different processes, initially by dissolution and later by partial filling and fracturing. Features like the presence of floating grains in the syntaxial cement, the transitional interpenetrative contact between the silica-rich cement and grains as well as the intense fracture porosity are strong indications that the cement has been formed by dissolution and reprecipitation of quartz from the framework under the effect of thermal expansion followed by rapid contraction. The increase of the silica-rich cement towards the dyke in association with the orthogonal disposition of the columns relative to dyke walls are indicative that the igneous body may represent the main heat source for the interstitial aqueous solutions previously existing in the sediments. At macroscopic scale, the increasing of internal tensions in the sandstones is responsible for the nucleation of polygons, leading to the individualization of prisms, which are interconnected by a system of joints, formed firstly on isotherm surfaces of low temperature and later on successive adjacent planes towards the dyke heat source.

The design of binary morphological operators that are translation-invariant and locally defined by a finite neighborhood window corresponds to the problem of designing Boolean functions. As in any supervised classification problem, morphological operators designed from a training sample also suffer from overfitting. Large neighborhood tends to lead to performance degradation of the designed operator. This work proposes a multilevel design approach to deal with the issue of designing large neighborhood-based operators. The main idea is inspired by stacked generalization (a multilevel classifier design approach) and consists of, at each training level, combining the outcomes of the previous level operators. The final operator is a multilevel operator that ultimately depends on a larger neighborhood than of the individual operators that have been combined. Experimental results show that two-level operators obtained by combining operators designed on subwindows of a large window consistently outperform the single-level operators designed on the full window. They also show that iterating two-level operators is an effective multilevel approach to obtain better results.

Modern medical imaging techniques enable the acquisition of in vivo high resolution images of the vascular system. Most common methods for the detection of vessels in these images, such as multiscale Hessian-based operators and matched filters, rely on the assumption that at each voxel there is a single cylinder. Such an assumption is clearly violated at the multitude of branching points that are easily observed in all, but the Most focused vascular image studies. In this paper, we propose a novel method for detecting vessels in medical images that relaxes this single cylinder assumption. We directly exploit local neighborhood intensities and extract characteristics of the local intensity profile (in a spherical polar coordinate system) which we term as the polar neighborhood intensity profile. We present a new method to capture the common properties shared by polar neighborhood intensity profiles for all the types of vascular points belonging to the vascular system. The new method enables us to detect vessels even near complex extreme points, including branching points. Our method demonstrates improved performance over standard methods on both 2D synthetic images and 3D animal and clinical vascular images, particularly close to vessel branching regions. Insect digestive chymotrypsins are present in a large variety of insect orders but their substrate specificity still remains unclear. Ewer insect chymotrypsins from 3 different insect orders (Dictyoptera, Coleoptera and two Lepidoptera) were isolated using affinity chromatography. Enzymes presented molecular masses in the range of 20 to 31 kDa and pH optima in the range of 7.5 to 10.0. Kinetic characterization. using different, colorimetric and fluorescent substrates indicated that insect chymotrypsins differ from, bovine chymotrypsin in their primary specificity toward small substrates (like N-benzoyl-L-Tyr p-nitroanilide) rather than on their preference for large substrates (exemplified by Succynil-Ala-Ala-Pro-Phe P-nitroanilide). Chloromethyl ketones (TPCK, N-alpha-tosyl-L-Phe chloromethyl ketone and Z-GGF-CK, N-carbobenzoxy-Gly-Gly-phe-CK) inactivated all chymotrypsins legated. Inactivation rates follow apparent first-order kinetics with variable second order rates (TPCK, 42 to 130 M(-1)s(-1); Z-GGF-CK, 150 to 450 M(-1)s(-1) that may be remarkably low for S. frugiperda chymotrypsin (TPCK, 6 M(-1)s(-1); Z-GGF-CK, 6.1 M(-1) s(-1)). Homology modelling and sequence alignment showed that. in lepidopteran chymotrypsins, differences in the amino acid residues in the neighborhood of the catalytic His 57 may affect its pKa, value. This is Proposed as the cause of the decrease in His 57 reactivity toward chloromethyl ketones. Such amino acid replacement in the active site is proposed. to be an adaptation to the presence of dietary ketones. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The objective of this study has been to describe and analyse existing forms of organisation in heating plants using wood fuels, regarding work tasks, organisational structure, skill demands, crew recruitment, working hours and wage conditions. Sixteen plants ranging from 10 to 120 MW have been studied by means of interviews, work place observations and written material. The job of the operator of heating plants is fairly qualified, independent and varied. The most negative factor is shift work. Some of the bigger plants (enterprises) have a relatively hierarchic, segmented and perhaps also an oversized organisation. However, modern concepts of organisation, such as customer orientation, ”flat organisation”, integration of production and maintenance etc, are gaining ground. Blue collar and white collar tasks are increasingly being integrated. Some of the medium sized enterprises have reached very far and may serve as models for bigger enterprises.

Who is the economic criminal? A comparison between countries and types of crime In white collar crime research two particularly competing definitions (Sutherland versus the Revisionists) have dominated the field during the last two decades. Sutherland’s definition states that the sociodemographic profile is homogeneous (entrepreneur with high education and high or regular income), despite type of white collar crime or context. The definition given by the Revisionists states that white collar criminals’ demographic profile is heterogeneous (everyone can be convicted for white collar crime). As a consequence of this divided definitional approach we have a contradictive outcome of who the white collar criminal is. Our purpose is to investigate the qualification of the two definitions by analyzing heterogeneity/ homogeneity based on crime type and national context. The investigation is based on seven countries from the EES 2004 (European Social Survey). We use four types of crime. The results show a rather homogeneous demographic profile but there is also a certain substantial heterogeneity depending on kinds of crime and context. The results altogether indicate that the Revisionists’ definition is more correct in its description of the white collar criminal than Sutherland’s definition. The demographic profile of the white collar criminal seems to be more complex than a profile confined to just one social category would be and the contextual factor has an impact on the variety of the demographic profile. An important task for future research is to hold the door open for further demographic investigations depending on the type of crime and country that the study is based on.

We present a new version of the hglm package for fittinghierarchical generalized linear models (HGLM) with spatially correlated random effects. A CAR family for conditional autoregressive random effects was implemented. Eigen decomposition of the matrix describing the spatial structure (e.g. the neighborhood matrix) was used to transform the CAR random effectsinto an independent, but heteroscedastic, gaussian random effect. A linear predictor is fitted for the random effect variance to estimate the parameters in the CAR model.This gives a computationally efficient algorithm for moderately sized problems (e.g. n<5000).

A utilização de uma emergência por pacientes com problemas médicos eletivos contribui para a demanda excessiva e impede de acesso a pacientes com emergência verdadeira. O presente estudo se propôs: (1) investigar as características do usuário da emergência em relação a aspectos demográficos, local de moradia e tempo que apresenta os sintomas que o levaram a consultar; (2) identificar as diferenças da demanda entre o final de semana e durante a semana; (3) investigar a prevalência de saúde mental, alcoolismo, doença coronariana e hipertensão; (4) avaliar como é a utilização e o acesso a serviços de saúde para pacientes que referem ter um médico definido em comparação com quem refere não ter; (5) avaliar a satisfação dos pacientes com o atendimento na emergência e (6) verificar se o atendimento através de um médico definido ou em serviço de atenção primária em saúde diminui o afluxo de casos não urgentes aos serviços de emergência. Foi realizado um estudo transversal na Emergência do Hospital N.S. da Conceição de Porto Alegre (RS) no período de 6 de janeiro a 25 de junho de 1996, tendo sido incluídos 20 dias escolhidos entre o meio-dia de sábado e o meio-dia de domingo, para caracterizar a demanda do final de semana, e o meio-dia de segunda-feira e meio-dia de terça-feira, para a dos outros dias. Fizeram parte da amostra 553 pacientes selecionados através de amostragem aleatória sistemática, com uma taxa de resposta de 88%. A coleta de dados consistiu de questionário de 156 questões aplicado aos pacientes. O registro e análise dos dados foram realizados utilizando-se os programas Epi-Info, EGRET e SPSS. As análises incluíram tabulações simples para determinação de prevalência das condições investigadas e regressão logística para avaliar o efeito conjunto das variáveis independentes sobre cada uma das variáveis dependentes. A população que freqüenta a emergência do HNSC é composta de jovens, predominantemente do sexo feminino, mora em Porto Alegre (especialmente, no bairro Sarandi) e na Grande Porto Alegre (especialmente, Alvorada), desloca-se preferencialmente de ônibus até o serviço de emergência, vem acompanhada, na maioria das vezes, de algum familiar, e a maioria decide consultar por iniciativa própria ou por indicação de algum familiar. Os homens internam com maior freqüência. Os serviços de atenção primária representaram 23% do atendimento habitual dos pacientes. As consultas foram definidas pelos emergencistas como de emergência em 15% dos casos, de urgência em 46%, e programáveis em 39% poderiam ser programadas. A prevalência de hipertensão foi 19%; de angina, 13%; de alcoolismo, 16%; de problema psiquiátrico menor, 32% entre os homens e 51% entre as mulheres (p< 0,0001). Como desfecho da consulta, 73% dos pacientes foram encaminhados para o domicílio ou para um serviço especializado, 10% foram para sala de observação e para apenas 5% foi indicada a internação. A maioria dos pacientes referiram estar satisfeitos com o atendimento. Os que consultaram no final de semana apresentaram, em média, um tempo menor de sintomas até decidir consultar, um menor tempo de deslocamento até o serviço de emergência, maior satisfação, média de idade maior, maior proporção de moradores de Porto Alegre e foram levados de carro até a emergência mais do que aqueles que consultaram durante a semana. O modelo de regressão logística identificou as variáveis independentes determinantes de ter um médico definido: consulta habitual em atenção primária em saúde (RC=3,22 IC95%=2,04-5,09), consulta definida como emergência ou urgência (RC=2,46 IC95%=1,55-3,92) e afastamento do trabalho (RC=1,59 IC95%= 1,03-2,45). Este resultado demonstra que o paciente que habitualmente consulta em serviços de atenção primária tem mais probabilidade para ter a continuidade no atendimento. A consulta ser de emergência ou de urgência apresentou associação significativa com as seguintes variáveis independentes, após ser colocada num modelo de regressão logística: pacientes internados ou em observação (RC=5,80 IC95%=3,33-10,17), costume de consultar com o mesmo médico (RC=2,98 IC95%=1,84-4,80) e ida de carro até a emergência (RC=2,67 IC95%=1,75-4,05). A variável hábito de consultar em serviço de atenção primária deixou de ficar estatisticamente significativa ao ser colocada no modelo de regressão logística. Este resultado revela que pacientes com médico definido têm três vezes mais chances de consultar por um problema de emergência no serviço de emergência do que aqueles que não têm um médico definido. Assim, uma estratégia para reduzir a ocorrência de consultas não urgentes em serviços de emergência é o paciente ter tal vínculo. No entanto, aqueles pacientes que referiram o posto de saúde como local onde habitualmente consultam não evitam, necessariamente, a utilização de um serviço de emergência por motivo considerado como programável. É necessário otimizar o atendimento de pacientes com problemas não urgentes que chegam à emergência através de estratégias no nível de atenção primária – especialmente possibilitando o atendimento médico continuado -, onde uma abordagem integral com ênfase na prevenção garanta um atendimento de melhor qualidade e custo menor.
