The reaction between 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H(2)SDBA) and manganese under mild conditions resulted in the isolation of two new three-dimensional compounds, Mn-4(C14H8O6S)(4)(DMA)(2)]center dot 3DMA, I, and Mn-3(C14H8O6S)(3)(DMA)(2)(MeOH)]center dot DMA, IIa. Both structures have Mn-3 trimer oxo cluster units. While the Mn-3 oxoclusters are connected through octahedral manganese forming one-dimensional Mn-O-Mn chains in I, the Mn-3 units are isolated in IIa. The SDBA units connect the Mn-O-Mn chains and the Mn-3 clusters giving rise to the three-dimensional structure. Both compounds have coordinated and free solvent molecules. In IIa, two different solvent molecules are coordinated, of which one solvent can be reversibly exchanged by a variety of other similar solvents via a solvent-mediated single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation. The free lattice DMA solvent molecules in I can be exchanged by water molecules resulting in hydrophilic channels. Proton conductivity studies on I reveals a high proton mobility with conductivity values of similar to 0.87 x 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1) at 34 degrees C and 98% RH, which is comparable to some of the good proton conductivity values observed in inorganic coordination polymers. We have also shown structural transformation of I to IIa through a possible dissolution and recrystallization pathway. In addition, both I and IIa appear to transform to two other manganese compounds H3O]Mn-3(mu(3)-OH)(C14H8O6S)(3)(H2O)](DMF)(5) and H3O](2)Mn-7(mu 3-OH)(4)(C14H8O6S)(6)(H2O)(4)](H2O)(2)(DMF)(8) under suitable reaction conditions. We have partially substituted Co in place of Mn in the Mn-3 trimer clusters forming CoMn2(C14H8O6S)(3)(DMA)(2)(EtOH)]center dot DMA, III, a structure that is closely related to IIa. All the compounds reveal antiferromagnetic behavior. On heating, the cobalt substituted phase (compound III) forms a CoMn2O4 spinel phase with particle sizes in the nanometer range.
Controlling phase separation in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.45) epitaxial thin films by strain disorder
Resumo:
Present study reveals that the length-scale of phase separation in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 thin films can be controlled by strain disorder invoked during the growth and relaxation process of film. Strain disorder provides an additional degree of freedom to tune colossal magnetoresistance. Magneto-transport measurements following cooling and heating in unequal fields protocol demonstrate that coherent strain stabilizes antiferromagnetic insulating phase, while strain disorder favors ferromagnetic metallic phase. Compared to bulk, antiferromagnetic-insulating phase freezes at lower temperatures in strain disordered films. Raman spectroscopy confirms the coexistence of charge-ordered-insulating and ferromagnetic-metallic phases which are structurally dissimilar and possess P2(1)/m and R-3C like symmetries, respectively. In this communication, we report the results of the studies on structural, microstructural, transport and magnetotransport behavior of L0.8-xPr0.2SrxMnO3 (LPSMO) (x=0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) manganite films grown on (100) single crystalline SrTiO3 (STO) substrate using low cost chemical solution deposition (CSD) method. Films with similar compositions were also grown using sophisticated pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique and results of structural and transport studies obtained for CSD grown films were compared with PLD grown films. Structural studies show that all the CSD and PLD grown films possess single crystalline nature with compressive and tensile strain, respectively. Surface morphology, studied using atomic force microscope (AFM), reveals the island like grain morphology in CSD grown films while PLD grown films possess smooth film surfaces. Carrier density dependent transport properties of the films have been discussed in the context of zener double exchange (ZDE) mechanism. Lower resistivity and higher transition temperature (T-p) observed in CSD grown films as compared to PLD grown films have been discussed in the light of structural strain and surface morphology of the films. Various models and mechanisms have been employed to understand the charge transport in CSD and PLD grown films. Also, observation of low temperature resistivity minima behavior in all the CSD and PLD grown LPSMO films has been explained in the context of electron-electron scattering mechanism. Polycyclic aromatic molecules such as ellipticine intercalate into double-stranded DNA and interfere with physiological functions. In the present study, we evaluate the chemotherapeutic potential of MPTQ on animal models and its mode of action. In order to test the antitumor activity, monohydrochloride of MPTQ was orally administered in mice bearing tumor. Results showed a significant inhibition of tumor growth compared to that of untreated controls. More importantly, mean lifespan of tumor bearing animals treated with MPTQ was significantly higher as compared to that of untreated tumor bearing mice suggesting that the treatment affected viability of cancerous cells, but not of normal cells. Consistent with this, we find that administration of MPTQ to normal mice did not cause any major side effects as observed upon hematological and serum profiling. We also found that MPTQ induces cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines, by activating apoptosis both by intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. Thus, MPTQ could be used as a potential cancer therapeutic agent. Recombinant adeno-associated virus vectors based on serotype 8 (AAV8) have shown significant promise for liver-directed gene therapy. However, to overcome the vector dose dependent immunotoxicity seen with AAV8 vectors, it is important to develop better AAV8 vectors that provide enhanced gene expression at significantly low vector doses. Since it is known that AAV vectors during intracellular trafficking are targeted for destruction in the cytoplasm by the host-cellular kinase/ubiquitination/proteasomal machinery, we modified specific serine/threonine kinase or ubiquitination targets on the AAV8 capsid to augment its transduction efficiency. Point mutations at specific serine (S)/threonine (T)/lysine (K) residues were introduced in the AAV8 capsid at the positions equivalent to that of the effective AAV2 mutants, generated successfully earlier. Extensive structure analysis was carried out subsequently to evaluate the structural equivalence between the two serotypes. scAAV8 vectors with the wild-type (WT) and each one of the S/T -> Alanine (A) or K-Arginine (R) mutant capsids were evaluated for their liver transduction efficiency in C57BL/6 mice in vivo. Two of the AAV8-S -> A mutants (S279A and S671A), and a K137R mutant vector, demonstrated significantly higher enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) transcript levels (similar to 9- to 46-fold) in the liver compared to animals that received WT-AAV8 vectors alone. The best performing AAV8 mutant (K137R) vector also had significantly reduced ubiquitination of the viral capsid, reduced activation of markers of innate immune response, and a concomitant two-fold reduction in the levels of neutralizing antibody formation in comparison to WT-AAV8 vectors. Vector bio-distribution studies revealed that the K137R mutant had a significantly higher and preferential transduction of the liver (106 vs. 7.7 vector copies/mouse diploid genome) when compared to WT-AAV8 vectors. To further study the utility of the K137R-AAV8 mutant in therapeutic gene transfer, we delivered human coagulation factor IX (h. FIX) under the control of liver-specific promoters (LP1 or hAAT) into C57BL/6 mice. The circulating levels of h. FIX: Ag were higher in all the K137R-AAV8 treated groups up to 8 weeks post-hepatic gene transfer. These studies demonstrate the feasibility of the use of this novel AAV8 vectors for potential gene therapy of hemophilia B.

In this paper we maximize the thermoelectric (TE) figure of merit, ZT, of n-type skutterudites, (In,Sr,Ba,Yb)(y)Co4Sb12, via three different routes: (i) find the optimum fraction of In as fourth filler (ii) check the influence of powder particle, grain, and crystallite size on the TE properties and (iii) check thermal stability. Filled n-type (Sr, Ba, Yb)(y)Co4Sb12 was mixed in three different proportions with In0.4Co4Sb12, ball milled (regular or high-energy (HB) ball milling) and hot-pressed. Particle size analyses and SEM pictures of the broken surfaces of the hot pressed samples document that only HB produces uniform particles/grains with average crystallite sizes similar to 100 nm, proven by transmission electron microscopy. X-ray Rietveld refinements combined with EDX indicate that in all cases indium entered the icosahedral voids of the skutterudite. Temperature dependent physical properties of all three regularly ball-milled samples show that increasing In-content infers an increasing electrical resistivity, increasing Seebeck coefficient but a decreasing total thermal conductivity. Although ZT (823 K) is in the same range as for the sample without In, the ZT values in the whole temperature range are higher and consequently the TE-conversion efficiency, eta is at least 10% higher. Annealing the samples at 600 degrees C for three days shows minor changes in structure and thermoelectric properties, indicating TE stability. The HB sample, due to uniformly small particles, equally sized grains and crystallites, exhibits a high power factor (4.4 mW/m K-2 at 730 K) and a very low thermal conductivity leading to an outstanding high ZT = 1.8 at 823 K (eta(max) = 17.5%). Computational study of X-Ha <-C and C-Ha <-X hydrogen bonds in n-alkane-HX complexes (X =F,OH, alkane =propane, butane, pentane) has been carried out in this work. Ab initio and density functional theories were used for this study. For n-alkane-H2O complexes both Oa <-H-C and O-Ha <-C hydrogen bonded complex have been found, while for n-alkane-HF complexes, our attempt to optimize Fa <-H-C H-bond was not successful. Like most of the hydrogen bonded systems, strong correlation between binding energy and stretching frequency of H-F and O-H stretching mode was observed. The values of electron density and Laplacian of electron density are within the accepted range for hydrogen bonds. In all these cases, X-Ha <-C hydrogen bonds are found to be stronger than C-Ha <-X hydrogen bonds.

Novel BioBr/Cd(OH)(2) heterostructures were synthesized by a facile chemical bath method under ambient conditions. A series of BiOBr/Cd(OH)(2) heterostructures were obtained by tuning the Bi/Cd molar ratios. The obtained heterostructures were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Optical properties were studied by UV-visible spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). Photocatalytic studies on rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation showed that the heterostructures are very efficient photocatalysts in mild basic medium. Scavenger test studies confirmed that the photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals (O-2(center dot-)) are the main active species responsible for RhB degradation. Comparison of photoluminescence (PL) intensity suggested that an inhibited charge recombination is crucial for the degradation process over these photocatalysts. Moreover, relative positioning of the valence and conduction band edges of the semiconductors, O-2/O-2(center dot-) and (OH)-O-center dot/H2O redox potentials and HOMO-LUMO levels of RhB appear to be responsible for the hole-specificity of degradation. Photocatalytic recycling experiments indicated the high stability of the catalysts in the reaction medium without any significant loss of activity. This study hence concludes that the heterojunction constructed between Cd(OH)(2) and BiOBr interfaces play a crucial role in influencing the charge carrier dynamics and subsequent photocatalytic activity.

Two dinuclear copper(II) complexes Li(H2O)(3)(CH3OH)](4)Cu2Br4]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)](4)(OH)(2) (1), Cu (H2O)(4)]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CC6H5)](2)Cl-2 center dot 5H(2)O (2), and a dinuclear zinc(II) complex Zn-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)] (3) have been synthesized using pyridine and benzoate functionality based new symmetrical dinucleating ligand, N, N'-Bis2-carboxybenzomethyl]-N, N'-Bis2-pyridylmethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol (H(3)cpdp). Complexes 1, 2 and 3 have been synthesized by carrying out reaction of the ligand H3cpdp with stoichiometric amounts of Cu-2(O2CCH3)(4)(H2O)(2)], CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O/C6H5COONa, and Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively, in methanol in the presence of NaOH at ambient temperature. Characterizations of the complexes have been done using various analytical techniques including single crystal X-ray structure determination. The X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that the copper(II) ions in complexes 1 and 2 are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Cu-Cu separation of 3.455(8) angstrom and 3.492(1)angstrom, respectively. The DFT optimized structure of complex 3 indicates that two zinc(II) ions are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Zn-Zn separation of 3.492(8)angstrom. UV-Vis and mass spectrometric analyses of the complexes confirm their dimeric nature in solution. Furthermore, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopic investigations authenticate the integrity of complex 3 in solution. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the copper centers, with J = -26.0 cm(-1) and -23.9 cm(-1) ((H) over cap = -2JS(1)S(2)) in complexes 1 and 2, respectively. In addition, glycosidase-like activity of the complexes has been investigated in aqueous solution at pH similar to 10.5 by UV-Vis spectrophotometric technique using p-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (4) and p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5) as model substrates. The current work reports quantitative OH species concentration in the cavity of a trapped vortex combustor (TVC) in the context of mixing and flame stabilization studies using both syngas and methane fuels. Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) measurements of OH radical obtained using a Nd: YAG pumped dye laser are quantified using a flat flame McKenna burner. The momentum flux ratio (MFR), defined as the ratio of the cavity fuel jet momentum to that of the guide vane air stream, is observed to be a key governing parameter. At high MFRs similar to 4.5, the flame front is observed to form at the interface of the fuel jet and the air jet stream. This is substantiated by velocity vector field measurements. For syngas, as the MFR is lowered to similar to 0.3, the fuel-air mixing increases and a flame front is formed at the bottom and downstream edge of the cavity where a stratified charge is present. This trend is observed for different velocities at similar equivalence ratios. In case of methane combustion in the cavity, where the MFRs employed are extremely low at similar to 0.01, a different mechanism is observed. A fuel-rich mixture is now observed at the center of the cavity and this mixture undergoes combustion. On further increase of the cavity equivalence ratio, the rich mixture exceeds the flammability limit and forms a thin reaction zone at the interface with air stream. As a consequence, a shear layer flame at the top of the cavity interface with the mainstream is also observed. The equivalence ratio in the cavity also determines the combustion characteristics in the case of fuel-air mixtures that are formed as a result of the mixing. Overall, flame stabilization mechanisms have been proposed, which account for the wide range of MFRs and premixing in the mainstream as well.

A new carbazole-based tetraimidazole ligand 1,3,6,8-tetra(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-9-methyl-9H-carbazole (L) has been synthesized. The unsymmetrical nature of L as well as the rotational freedom of imidazole donor moieties around C-N bond make it a special building unit, which upon treatment with cis-(tmeda)Pd(NO3)(2) produced an unprecedented single linkage-isomeric Pd-8 tetrafacial molecular nanobarrel (PSMBR-1) tmeda N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine]. Unlike closed architectures, open barrel architecture of water-soluble PSMBR-1 makes it an ideal host for some water insoluble polyaromatic hydrocarbons in aqueous medium; one such inclusion complex coroneneCPSMBR-1 was characterized by X-ray diffraction study. Moreover, the potential application of PSMER-1 as carrier in aqueous medium for the transportation of water insoluble fluorophore (perylene) for live cell imaging is explored.

Although several factors have been suggested to contribute to thermostability, the stabilization strategies used by proteins are still enigmatic. Studies on a recombinant xylanase from Bacilllus sp. NG-27 (RBSX), which has the ubiquitous (beta/alpha)(8)-triosephosphate isomerase barrel fold, showed that just a single mutation, V1L, although not located in any secondary structural element, markedly enhanced the stability from 70 degrees C to 75 degrees C without loss of catalytic activity. Conversely, the V1A mutation at the same position decreased the stability of the enzyme from 70 degrees C to 68 degrees C. To gain structural insights into how a single extreme N-terminus mutation can markedly influence the thermostability of the enzyme, we determined the crystal structure of RBSX and the two mutants. On the basis of computational analysis of their crystal structures, including residue interaction networks, we established a link between N-terminal to C-terminal contacts and RBSX thermostability. Our study reveals that augmenting N-terminal to C-terminal noncovalent interactions is associated with enhancement of the stability of the enzyme. In addition, we discuss several lines of evidence supporting a connection between N-terminal to C-terminal noncovalent interactions and protein stability in different proteins. We propose that the strategy of mutations at the termini could be exploited with a view to modulate stability without compromising enzymatic activity, or in general, protein function in diverse folds where N and C termini are in close proximity. Database The coordinates of RBSX, V1A and V1L have been deposited in the PDB database under the accession numbers 4QCE, 4QCF, and 4QDM, respectively

An iron(III) salicylate having a dipicolylamine base (andpa) with a photoactive anthracenyl moiety is prepared, characterized, and studied for its photo-induced anticancer activity and cellular localization in HeLa and MCF-7 cells. Its phenyl analogue is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complex has a ternary structure in which the dipicolylamine ligand and salicylic acid in dianionic form (sal) display respective tridentate and bidentate mode of coordination in Fe(sal)(phdpa)Cl] (1). Complex Fe(sal)(andpa)Cl] (2) having a pendant anthracenyl moiety shows significant photocytotoxicity in visible light (400-700 nm) giving IC50 values of 8.6 +/- 0.7 and 3.4 +/- 0.9 mu M in HeLa and MCF-7 cells, while being essentially nontoxic in the dark (IC50 > 100 mu M). The complex shows cytosolic localization in the cancer cells. Formation of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) as the reactive oxygen species is evidenced from the pUC19 DNA photocleavage studies. Scaffolds for bone tissue engineering are essentially characterized by porous three-dimensional structures with interconnected pores to facilitate the exchange of nutrients and removal of waste products from cells, thereby promoting cell proliferation in such engineered scaffolds. Although hydroxyapatite is widely being considered for bone tissue engineering applications due to its occurrence in the natural extracellular matrix of this tissue, limited reports are available on additive manufacturing of hydroxyapatite-based materials. In this perspective, hydroxyapatite-based three-dimensional porous scaffolds with two different binders (maltodextrin and sodium alginate) were fabricated using the extrusion method of three-dimensional plotting and the results were compared in reference to the structural properties of scaffolds processed via chemical stabilization and sintering routes, respectively. With the optimal processing conditions regarding to pH and viscosity of binder-loaded hydroxyapatite pastes, scaffolds with parallelepiped porous architecture having up to 74% porosity were fabricated. Interestingly, sintering of the as-plotted hydroxyapatite-sodium alginate (cross-linked with CaCl2 solution) scaffolds led to the formation of chlorapatite (Ca9.54P5.98O23.8Cl1.60(OH)(2.74)). Both the sintered scaffolds displayed progressive deformation and delayed fracture under compressive loading, with hydroxyapatite-alginate scaffolds exhibiting a higher compressive strength (9.5 +/- 0.5MPa) than hydroxyapatite-maltodextrin scaffolds (7.0 +/- 0.6MPa). The difference in properties is explained in terms of the phase assemblage and microstructure.

In the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we discuss the possibility of the lightest Higgs boson with mass M-h = 98 GeV to be consistent with the 2.3 sigma excess observed at the LEP in the decay mode e(+)e(-) -> Zh, with h -> b (b) over bar. In the same region of the MSSM parameter space, the heavier Higgs boson (H) with mass M-H similar to 125 GeV is required to be consistent with the latest data on Higgs coupling measurements at the end of the 7 + 8 TeV LHC run with 25 fb(-1) of data. While scanning the MSSM parameter space, we impose constraints coming from flavor physics, relic density of the cold dark matter as well as direct dark matter searches. We study the possibility of observing this light Higgs boson in vector boson fusion process and associated production with W/Z-boson at the high luminosity (3000 fb(-1)) run of the 14 TeV LHC. Our analysis shows that this scenario can hardly be ruled out even at the high luminosity run of the LHC. However, the precise measurement of the Higgs signal strength ratios can play a major role to distinguish this scenario from the canonical MSSM one.
