The development of private farms in Vietnam

The objective of this paper is to explore the entities that have developed private farms (trang trai) in Vietnam. Various types of private farms have emerged in the last ten years. It is noteworthy that the owners of private farms are not necessarily agricultural households but also include government officials and the urban rich. Based on data collected from the author’s field surveys in Vietnam from 2006 to 2011, the paper attempts to categorize patterns in the development of private farms and analyze their differences. The paper argues that private farms developed by agricultural households are still limited because of the difficulty of consolidating land.

Spatial Planning Measures for the Enhancement of Urban Resilience Against Flooding Risk

Dentro del campo de la ciudad como lugar se analiza el concepto de planificación territorial y planeamiento espacial. Flooding is one of the main risks associated to many urban settlements in Spain and, indeed, elsewhere. The location of cities has traditionally ignored this type of risk as other locational criteria prevailed (communications, crop yields, etc.). Defence engineering has been the customary way to offset the risk but, nowadays, the opportunity costs of engineering works in urban areas has highlighted the interest of “soft measures” based on prevention. Early warning systems plus development planning controls rank among the most favoured ones. This paper reflects the results of a recent EU-financed research project on alternative measures geared to the enhancement of urban resilience against flooding. A city study in Spain is used as example of those measures.

Characterisation of the gene encoding type II DNA topoisomerase from Leishmania donovani: a key molecular target in antileishmanial therapy

The gene encoding type II DNA topoisomerase from the kinetoplastid hemoflagellated protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani (LdTOP2) was isolated from a genomic DNA library of this parasite. DNA sequence analysis revealed an ORF of 3711 bp encoding a putative protein of 1236 amino acids with no introns. The deduced amino acid sequence of LdTOP2 showed strong homologies to TOP2 sequences from other kinetoplastids, namely Crithidia and Trypanosoma spp. with estimated identities of 86 and 68%, respectively. LdTOP2 shares a much lower identity of 32% with its human homologue. LdTOP2 is located as a single copy on a chromosome in the 0.7 Mb region in the L.donovani genome and is expressed as a 5 kb transcript. 5′-Mapping studies indicate that the LdTOP2 gene transcript is matured post-transcriptionally with the trans-splicing of the mini-exon occurring at –639 from the predicted initiation site. Antiserum raised in rabbit against glutathione S-transferase fusion protein containing the major catalytic portion of the recombinant L.donovani topoisomerase II protein could detect a band on western blots at ∼132 kDa, the expected size of the entire protein. Use of the same antiserum for immunolocalisation analysis led to the identification of nuclear, as well as kinetoplast, antigens for L.donovani topoisomerase II. The in vitro biochemical properties of the full-length recombinant LdTOP2 when overexpressed in E.coli were similar to the Mg(II) and ATP-dependent activity found in cell extracts of L.donovani.

Campus accesible, campus igualitario

El Proyecto “Campus Accesible, Campus Igualitario” del Vicerrectorado de Campus y Sostenibilidad, la Unidad de Igualdad y el Vicerrectorado de Estudiantes, articulado sobre el trípode que lo vincula a la innovación docente, la investigación y la acción transformadora, en su segundo año de andadura, ha trabajado en tres líneas: por un lado, dando continuidad (y, con ella, sentido) a las acciones emprendidas el curso pasado; por otro, revisando con espíritu crítico tanto los datos como las experiencias recabadas para reinterpretarlos a la luz de nuevos contextos y nuevas posibilidades; y, finalmente, asumiendo el reto que se lanza al Secretariado de Desarrollo de Campus desde el 2ª Plan de Igualdad de Oportunidades entre Mujeres y Hombres de la Universidad de Alicante, 2014-2016, en el Objetivo 2, Incorporar la perspectiva de género en los procesos de planificación y gestión de la actividad deportiva ofertada por la UA, Acción 14, Introducir la perspectiva de género en el diseño y uso de espacios en las instalaciones deportivas. Con este fin, se ha diagnosticado tanto el espacio del Campus en su conjunto como su zona deportiva y se han sentado las bases teóricas para la confección de un sondeo de opinión entre la comunidad universitaria.
