The syntheses and characterization of two new redox active cyclam ligands ferrocenylmethyl-(6-methyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradec-6-yl)-amine(L-3) and 1, 1'-ferrocenylmethyl-bis(6-methyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradec-6-yl)-amine (L-4) are reported. The compounds each possess a ferrocenyl group bearing one (L-3) or two (L-4) appended macrocycles linked by their exocyclic amino groups and the crystal structures of both compounds have been determined. Anion binding of L-3 and L-4 was investigated by electrochemical titrations where H-bonding to each macrocycle causing a shift in the Fc(+/0) redox potential was used as a reporter of guest binding. The Zn-II complex of L-3 has also been isolated and characterized structurally. These compounds were analysed for their capacity to electrochemically recognize anions in both aqueous and non-aqueous solution. We have found that L-3, L-4 and [ZnL3-](2+) sense Cl- and AcO- anions in MeCN-CH2Cl2, a function that is lost in aqueous solution.

Copper(II) bromide and chloride complexes of the new heptadentate ligand 2,6-bis(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)methylpyridine (L) have been prepared. For the bromide complexes, chains of novel, approximately C-2-symmetric, chiral [Cu-2(L)Br-2](2+) 'wedge-shaped' tectons are found. The links between the dicopper tectons and the overall chirality and packing of the chains are dictated by the bromide ion content, not the counter anion. In contrast, the chloride complexes exhibit linked asymmetric [Cu-2(L)Cl-3](+) tectons with distinct N3CuCl2 and N4CuCl2 centres in the solid. The overall structures of the dicopper bromide and chloride units persist in solution irrespective of the halide. The redox chemistry of the various species is also described.

A finite difference method for simulating voltammograms of electrochemically driven enzyme catalysis is presented. The method enables any enzyme mechanism to be simulated. The finite difference equations can be represented as a matrix equation containing a nonlinear sparse matrix. This equation has been solved using the software package Mathematica. Our focus is on the use of cyclic voltammetry since this is the most commonly employed electrochemical method used to elucidate mechanisms. The use of cyclic voltammetry to obtain data from systems obeying Michaelis-Menten kinetics is discussed, and we then verify our observations on the Michaelis-Menten system using the finite difference simulation. Finally, we demonstrate how the method can be used to obtain mechanistic information on a real redox enzyme system, the complex bacterial molybdoenzyme xanthine dehydrogenase.

Complexation of cadmium(II) by the ditopic (bis-tridentate) thiocarbazone ligand 1,5-bis(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethylene) thiocarbonohydrazide, H2L1, results in the self-assembly of a charge-neutral 2 x 2 molecular grid, [Cd-4(L-1)(4)], comprising four metals and four ligands in an interlocked cyclic array. The solid-state structure of this tetramer has been established by X-ray crystallography and in solution by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The presence of lower molecular weight oligomers was identified by both NMR and ESI-MS.

Attempts to ring-close the nitrogen atom of 8-amino-p-menth-1-ene and of N-substituted 8-amino-p-menth-1-enes onto the C1 - C2 double-bond carbons has led to a range of bicyclo[2.2.2] and bicyclo[3.2.1] products, together with the novel bicyclo[4.3.1]-1,3-oxazepine 9.

Cyclic voltammetry of the non-heme diiron enzyme porcine purple acid phosphatase (uteroferrin, Uf) has been reported for the first time. Totally reversible one-electron oxidation responses (Fe-III-Fe-II --> Fe-III-Fe-III) are seen both in the absence and in the presence of weak competitive inhibitors phosphate and arsenate, and dissociation constants of these oxoanion complexes formed with uteroferrin in its oxidized state (Uf(o)) have been determined. The effect of pH on the redox potentials has been investigated in the range 3 < pH < 6.5, enabling acid dissociation constants for Uf(o) and its phosphate and arsenate complexes to be calculated.

The proteome of bovine milk is dominated by just six gene products that constitute approximately 95% of milk protein. Nonetheless, over 150 protein spots can be readily detected following two-dimensional electrophoresis of whole milk. Many of these represent isoforms of the major gene products produced through extensive posttranslational modification. Peptide mass fingerprinting of in-gel tryptic digests (using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in reflectron mode with alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid as the matrix) identified 10 forms of K-casein with isoelectric point (pl) values from 4.47 to 5.81, but could not distinguish between them. MALDI-TOF MS in linear mode, using sinapinic acid as the matrix, revealed a large tryptic peptide (mass > 5990 Da) derived from the C-terminus that contained all the known sites of genetic variance, phosphorylation and glycosylation. Two genetic variants present as singly or doubly phosphorylated forms could be distinguished using mass data alone. Glycoforms containing a single acidic tetrasaccharide were also identified. The differences in electrophoretic mobility of these isoforms were consistent with the addition of the acidic groups. While more extensively glycosylated forms were also observed, substantial loss of N-acetylneuraminic acid from the glycosyl group was evident in the MALDI spectra such that ions corresponding to the intact glycopeptide were not observed and assignment of the glycoforms was not possible. However, by analysing the pl shifts observed on the two-dimensional gels in conjunction with the MS data, the number of N-acetylneuraminic acid residues, and hence the glycoforms present, could be determined.

Complementing our recent work on subspace wavepacket propagation [Chem. Phys. Lett. 336 (2001) 149], we introduce a Lanczos-based implementation of the Faber polynomial quantum long-time propagator. The original version [J. Chem. Phys. 101 (1994) 10493] implicitly handles non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, that is, those perturbed by imaginary absorbing potentials to handle unwanted reflection effects. However, like many wavepacket propagation schemes, it encounters a bottleneck associated with dense matrix-vector multiplications. Our implementation seeks to reduce the quantity of such costly operations without sacrificing numerical accuracy. For some benchmark scattering problems, our approach compares favourably with the original. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We extend our Lanczos subspace time-independent wave packet method [J. Chem. Phys. 116 (2002) 2354] to investigate the issue of symmetry contaminations for the challenging deep-well H + O-2 reaction. Our central objective is to address the issue of whether significant symmetry contamination can occur if a wavepacket initially possessing the correct O-O exchange symmetry is propagated over tens of thousands of recursive steps using a basis which does not explicitly enforce the correct symmetry, and if so how seriously this affects the results. We find that symmetry contamination does exist where the symmetry constraint is not explicitly enforced in the basis. While it affects individual resonances and the associated peak amplitudes, the overall shape of the more averaged quantities such as total reaction probabilities and vibrational branching ratios are not seriously affected. In this paper we report the results of ab initio calculations on the energetics and kinetics of oxygen-driven carbon gasification reactions using a small model cluster, with full characterisation of the stationary points on the reaction paths. We show that previously unconsidered pathways present significantly reduced barriers to reaction and must be considered as alternative viable paths. We present an efficient and robust method for the calculation of all S matrix elements (elastic, inelastic, and reactive) over an arbitrary energy range from a single real-symmetric Lanczos recursion. Our new method transforms the fundamental equations associated with Light's artificial boundary inhomogeneity approach [J. Chem. Phys. 102, 3262 (1995)] from the primary representation (original grid or basis representation of the Hamiltonian or its function) into a single tridiagonal Lanczos representation, thereby affording an iterative version of the original algorithm with greatly superior scaling properties. The method has important advantages over existing iterative quantum dynamical scattering methods: (a) the numerically intensive matrix propagation proceeds with real symmetric algebra, which is inherently more stable than its complex symmetric counterpart; (b) no complex absorbing potential or real damping operator is required, saving much of the exterior grid space which is commonly needed to support these operators and also removing the associated parameter dependence. Test calculations are presented for the collinear H+H-2 reaction, revealing excellent performance characteristics. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Bound and resonance states of HO2 are calculated quantum mechanically using both the Lanczos homogeneous filter diagonalization method and the real Chebyshev filter diagonalization method for nonzero total angular momentum J=6 and 10, using a parallel computing strategy. For bound states, agreement between the two methods is quite satisfactory; for resonances, while the energies are in good agreement, the widths are in general agreement. The quantum nonzero-J specific unimolecular dissociation rates for HO2 are also calculated. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Bound and resonance states of HO2 have been calculated by both the complex Lanczos homogeneous filter diagonalisation (LHFD) method(1,2) and the real Chebyshev filter diagonalisation method(3,4) for non-zero total angular momentum J = 4 and 5. For bound states, the agreement between the two methods is quite satisfactory; for resonances while the energies are in good agreement, the widths are only in general agreement. The relative performances of the two iterative FD methods have also been discussed in terms of efficiency as well as convergence behaviour for such a computationally challenging problem. A helicity quantum number Ohm assignment (within the helicity conserving approximation) is performed and the results indicate that Coriolis coupling becomes more important as J increases and the helicity conserving approximation is not a good one for the HO2 resonance states.
