The Lagrangian progression of a biological community was followed in a filament of the Mauritanian upwelling system, north-west Africa, during offshore advection. The inert dual tracers sulfur hexafluoride and helium-3 labelled a freshly upwelled patch of water that was mapped for 8 days. Changes in biological, physical, and chemical characteristics were measured, including phytoplankton productivity, nitrogen assimilation, and regeneration. Freshly upwelled water contained high nutrient concentrations but was depleted in N compared to Redfield stoichiometry. The highest rate of primary productivity was measured on the continental shelf, associated with high rates of nitrogen assimilation and a phytoplankton community dominated by diatoms and flagellates. Indicators of phytoplankton abundance and activity decreased as the labelled water mass transited the continental shelf slope into deeper water, possibly linked to the mixed layer depth exceeding the light penetration depth. By the end of the study, the primary productivity rate decreased and was associated with lower rates of nitrogen assimilation and lower nutrient concentrations. Nitrogen regeneration and assimilation took place simultaneously. Results highlighted the importance of regenerated NHC 4 in sustaining phytoplankton productivity and indicate that the upwelled NO3 pool contained an increasing fraction of regenerated NO3 as it advected offshore. By calculating this fraction and incorporating it into an f ratio formulation, we estimated that of the 12:38Tg C of annual regional production, 4:73Tg C was exportable.

Studies on natural infection by Leishmania spp of sandflies collected in endemic and nonendemic areas can provide important information on the distribution and intensity of the transmission of these parasites. This study sought to investigate the natural infection by Leishmania in wild female sandflies. The specimens were caught in the city of Corumbá, state of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil) between October 2012-March 2014, and dissected to investigate flagellates and/or submitted to molecular analysis to detect Leishmania DNA. A total of 1,164 females (77.56% of which were Lutzomyia cruzi ) representing 11 species were investigated using molecular analysis; 126 specimens of Lu. cruzi were dissected and also submitted to molecular analysis. The infection rate based on the presence of Leishmania DNA considering all the sandfly species analysed was 0.69%; only Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis was identified in Lu. cruzi by the molecular analysis. The dissections were negative for flagellates. This is the first record of the presence of L. (L.) amazonensis DNA in Lu. cruzi, and the first record of this parasite in this area. These findings point to the need for further investigation into the possible role of this sandfly as vector of this parasite.

This article aims to analyze the work The flagellates East Wind (1959), Cape Verdean writer Manuel Lopes, highlighting their contribution to the development of Cape Verde literature, from a regionalist perspective. In this work, Manuel Lopes introduces the reader to the hard reality that the panel are subjected the inhabitants of St. Anthony, victims of insular confinement and natural phenomena that afflict the region. Thus, this analysis understand regionalism as a timeless current, as Ligia Chiappini (1995), which does not exclude the universalism of the work and seek to identify the specifics of the landscape, the structure and organization of the Cape Verdean society, customs, cuisine, music, way of speaking as a translation for the construction of national identity. Therefore, we will use as theorists subsidies Manuel Ferreira (1997), Daniel Spínola (1998), Simone Caputo Gomes (2008) (2015), João Paulo Madeira (2014), Maria Aparecida Santilli (1985), Maria Nazareth Soares Fonseca e Terezinha Taborna Moreira (2014), among others.
